Actually a newer snapshot is needed it looks like to enable 4.x
compatibility. I tested the gvfs backend and browsing files.

I've verified with the 1.5.0~ppa5 version of bluez-gnome that OBEX
sendto and browsing functionality work.

The entire stack that we had in hardy should be regressionless with
these packages now.

[Bug 274950] Re: Look into switching to bluez 4.x

2008-09-27 Thread Mario Limonciello
The diffstat for bluez is a bit undefined. More or less bluez-utils and
bluez-libs merged. To do this diffstat, I copied all of bluez-libs into
the bluez-utils tree, and then ran a diffstat. Take it with a (rather
large) grain of salt.

[Bug 274950] Re: Look into switching to bluez 4.x

2008-09-27 Thread Mario Limonciello
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: bluez-utils
+ BlueZ 4.x resolves two regressions that are seen in the 3.x stack on
+ Intrepid.

- As discussed in IRC on #ubuntu-motu, BlueZ 4.x resolves regressions that are
seen in the 3.x stack on Intrepid.
- * Particularly, keyboards aren't able to pair in the UI.
-- The combination of bluez-utils 3.36 and the btusb kernel module seems to
be causing problems when pairing bluetooth keyboards.
- * Broken services tab (completely gone in 4.x)
-- This is fixed in bluez-gnome 0.28 or anything later. However you need
to switch to a package in the 4.x series when using the bluez 4.x stack.
+ Regressions solved
+ ---
+ * Keyboards aren't able to pair in the UI.
+- The combination of bluez-utils 3.36 and the btusb kernel module seems to
be causing problems when pairing bluetooth keyboards. Reverting to an earlier
release of bluez-utils is not a good solution as a lot of bugs were fixed by
coming up to 3.36.

- Additionally, the bluez stack's usability is improved in the 4.x version.
- * Usability - there is a pairing wizard with 4.x which is ages beyond what
was in 3.x
+ * Broken services tab
+ - In the 3.x stack, the services tab is unfortunately the only way to
activate new devices.
+ - This is fixed in bluez-gnome 0.28 or anything later. However you need to
switch to a package in the 1.x series when using the Bluez 4.x stack.
+
+ Newer features
+ --
+ The 4.x version brings an additional UI element, a pairing wizard. This may
cause problems for documentation teams, but considering the previous UI was not
intuitive, there likely hasn't been a lot of documentation on it.

- Test packages will be provided in a PPA.
+ Testing
+ --
+ The entire stack that needs to be changed for this bug is available on the
Bluetooth team testing PPA at http://launchpad.net/~bluetooth/+archive .
+ * Builds are all verified functional for i386, amd64, lpia
+ * These builds have all been test installed by adding the PPA to an up to
date Intrepid and doing a dist-upgrade.
+ * Functionality has been verified for keyboards, mice, OBEX browsing, OBEX
sending, and DUN via rfcomm.

[Bug 242713] Re: Use sound to notify in event of an error is not useful

2008-09-02 Thread Mario Limonciello
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The bug is present in both Ubuntu 8.04 and Ubuntu 8.10
  (GPM 2.23.1-0ubuntu1 in 8.10 and 2.22.1-1ubuntu4 in 8.04)

Currently, g-p-m will make a series of annoying beeps in the event of a
'failed' suspend. Unfortunately, a 'failed' suspend just means that it
failed 'one' of the times on the way down or on the way up. It will
continue to try until it actually makes it down or up.

- Having these annoying beeps after a (successful) resume doesn't make
- sense to the user since in their eyes everything went fine.
+ Addressing bug:
+ This is typically caused by a suspend longer than 6 hours, because dbus will
time out the connection after 6 hours. I've supplied a fix to upstream gnome
which as been added to their tree to resolve the issue.

- I propose that this should be turned off by default, and if someone
- wants to use it for say debugging a long time for a suspend to kick in,
- or a slow resume they can enable it themselves.
+ Impact:
+ This bug is cosmetic (per say, since it's an audible sound), but can get
rather annoying.

- Unfortunately there isn't a good test case for this as it only happens
- randomly on the way back up during resume. Sometimes performing 10
- suspend/resume cycles in a row won't even produce it.
+ Test Case:
+ 1) Ensure audio is working
+ 2) Ensure that the checkbox to play a noise in the event of an error is
checked
+ 3) Suspend a machine that is known machine for 6 hours
+ 4) Listen for a series of annoying beeps
+
+ Regression Potential:
+ This code path is only used when suspending 6 hours. There shouldn't be
any regression potential.

** Summary changed:

- Use sound to notify in event of an error is not useful

2008-08-15 Thread Mario Limonciello
I understand that it should show a warning, but again, you don't need
*ubuntu-artwork*. You need ubuntu-gdm-themes for the recommends.
Having ubuntu-artwork pulls in all of this stuff:

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  gtk2-engines-murrine human-icon-theme human-theme ubuntu-artwork
ubuntu-gdm-themes ubuntu-wallpapers
0 upgraded, 6 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded.
Need to get 7573kB of archives.
After this operation, 11.6MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

11 megs is very valuable space for LiveCDs.

I like Emmett's suggestion; any derivative providing a theme will very
easily be able to implement this.

This effects Ubuntu Studio as well. (I'd also imagine Xubuntu) As this
was the behavior before Intrepid I don't see how this would cause and

you are returned to a GNOME GDM screen.

[Bug 258091] [NEW] gdm should not recommend ubuntu-artwork

2008-08-14 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Currently gdm is recommending ubuntu-artwork:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# apt-cache depends gdm | grep artwork
 |Recommends: ubuntu-artwork
 |Recommends: edubuntu-artwork

I don't agree that this should be installed by gdm. It's actually
already handled by ubuntu-desktop:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# apt-cache depends ubuntu-desktop | grep artwork

Derivative distros don't necessarily want ubuntu-artwork installed, and
it is pulling in a lot of other packages that they may not want.

[Bug 242713] [NEW] Use sound to notify in event of an error is not useful

2008-06-24 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Currently, g-p-m will make a series of annoying beeps in the event of a
'failed' suspend. Unfortunately, a 'failed' suspend just means that it
failed 'one' of the times on the way down or on the way up. It will
continue to try until it actually makes it down or up.

Having these annoying beeps after a (successful) resume doesn't make
sense to the user since in their eyes everything went fine.

I propose that this should be turned off by default, and if someone
wants to use it for say debugging a long time for a suspend to kick in,
or a slow resume they can enable it themselves.

[Bug 242454] [NEW] Places-Connect to Server-Public FTP creates odd error message

2008-06-23 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This is on an up to date copy of Hardy as of June 23 2008.

RE: [Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

2008-05-28 Thread Mario Limonciello
Chris,

The underlying problem is still an issue with the NVIDIA driver's
handling of offscreen windows. An upcoming NVIDIA release will resolve
it. This fix is to partially help so at least people can lock their
screen and suspend/resume and still get the dialog. (Better than
nothing)

I can confirm what Chris Coulson says here about windows still appearing as
white if they are created when the computer is not showing my VT as the
active VT.

2008/5/28 Chris Coulson [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Michael: Is this fix supposed to completely fix the white screen issues,
because for me it only partially fixes the problem. I can switch between
users, have the screen lock automatically and return to the users
without seeing the white screen. But any windows that appear on the
background screen still appear as white when I make that screen active
 again (see comment 75
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/160264/comments/75).
Would the NVIDIA drivers need to be fixed to stop this from happening?

[Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

2008-05-01 Thread Mario Limonciello
I have some additional information for this bug after discussing the
issue with NVIDIA. The bug that is occurring is indeed a bug in their
driver, but requires large changes that won't be happening very soon.

This bug however, is only being exposed due to a patch that is added to
compiz, 030_fix_screensaver. Looking at the changelog, this patch is
here for this reason:

compiz (1:0.6.2+git20071018-0ubuntu2) hardy; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/030_fix_screensaver:
- never unredirect the gnome-screensaver window to prevent
  breaking the keyboard grab (#145123)

-- Michael Vogt [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon, 29 Oct 2007 12:57:25
-0400

That however, is no longer necessary since the bug that it was working around
was in the X server, and fixed by git commit:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=a6a7fadbb03ee99312dfb15ac478ab3c414c1c0b

We absorbed this patch in the X server when merging from debian earlier:

xorg-server (2:1.4.1~git20080118-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Brice Goglin ]
  * Add 42_dont_break_grab_and_focus_for_window_when_redirecting.diff
to prevent password authentication bypass, closes: #449108.

  [ Julien Cristau ]
  * New upstream snapshot
+ includes the security fixes from the previous version
+ fixes regression introduced by the fix for CVE-2007-6429 in the MIT-SHM
  extension (closes: #461410)

 -- Brice Goglin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri, 18 Jan 2008 22:20:32 +0100

Once the 030_fix_screensaver patch is dropped, compiz works correctly on
NVIDIA cards.

[Bug 195914] [NEW] Ekiga gstreamer inputs default to outdated V4L, and require to be changed to V4L2

2008-02-26 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Most modern webcam and capture devices are V4L2 based, but gstreamer and
Ekiga both default to using V4L instead. The V4L API isn't even
available in 2.6 kernels beyond 2.6.15, so it makes much more sense to
disable it by default.

Webcam capture applications that use gstreamer (such as ekiga) throw
errors otherwise.

Re: [Bug 184913] Re: [Hardy Feature Request] Option to disabletouchpad in Mouse Preferences - Touchpad

2008-02-25 Thread Mario Limonciello
Jose,

I'm not positive on this, but you may need to have the synaptics section
to your xorg.conf manually added for this tab to show up. Since
input-hotplug isn't finished, there is no other way for it to know.

The gst patches are already applied (and don't need to enter main). The totem
just requires that it be added to the build dependency as the support is already
there.
