[Bug 134948] Re: required password length for users should be the same as pam.d/common-password

2010-04-05 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yes, I'll have to fix that string, but that will be for Lucid+1.

We can't really remove these checks because when changing password for a
user different than the current one, PAM doesn't check the password,
which is set using 'chpasswd'. The current situation is pretty lame, but
we'd have to parse PAM's config files in the backends and get the
information from there... Using PAM in the backends would be better, but
we don't support conversation in the protocol, and that would be very
hard to implement without breaking all the other gnome-system-tools. Not
likely to happen.

[Bug 555139] Re: Cannot enable user

2010-04-04 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for investigating the code, but I don't think the line you cite
is the source of the bug. This line is only run when changing your own
password, which is a completely different case. Furthermore, enabling an
account works for me following the same procedure as you.

So I rather suspect that changing password is failing on your system,
and that explains why the account stays disabled. Could you check that
you're able to change passwords, e.g. by running in a console 'sudo
passwd testuser' ? If you get a System Error, then you're suffering
from bug 546874.

(Then we have the more general issue of error reporting from the
backends, but that requires much more work...)

[Bug 553746] Re: Cannot Change User and Group ID

2010-04-03 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yeah, you were also able to set the phone number, and tweak membership
to every kind of obscure privilege, plus changing home directory. But
how many people need that? If you really need a specific UID, just
create the user and change UID after, that doesn't hurt, and makes most
people not scared by strange settings.

Plus, not choosing an UID allows us to let adduser preferences come into
play, which is very important for system-wide consistency. Note if you
really need a specific profile for some users, have a look at /etc
/gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf, where you can add MinUID and
MaxUID options.

Well, pasting a link, expecting triagers will go through the whole
thread to understand your problem is hardly a nice practice. I see there
that your problem is solved, and you don't provide any detail about the
problem. Did you upgrade from Karmic? Was the applet present in the

And the package is wrong:
$ dpkg -S gnome-volume-control-applet
gnome-media: /usr/bin/gnome-volume-control-applet
gnome-media: /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-volume-control-applet.desktop
(ironically, the latter file is the one you should have on your system for the

Actually, in Ubuntu, you need to add the notification applet to the
panel (not the notification area). It provides the messaging and the
volume icon, that's why gnome-volume-control-applet is disabled (not
sure how, though). The bug is in the fact that upgraders are not
suggested to add it, but that may be a planned feature.

[Bug 370737] Re: Creating username = exising group is refused as user exists

2010-03-29 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
That's fixed in Lucid. Since 2.29.92 we automatically add the user to
the group named after its login if it already exists. That's not really
optimal since it may not be what you want, though - that will be
improved in the next cycle.

[Bug 543042] Re: pressing CANCEL in policykit super user mount dialog shows silly error message

2010-03-29 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Martin: I guess you can simply run 'sudo killall polkitd', and it will
forget your authentication.

One would have to check whether gvfs actually redirects
POLKIT_ERROR_CANCELLED to G_IO_ERROR_CANCELLED, and if so, then add it
to the ignore case in Nautilus. Or simply add that condition in
Nautilus, and see if it works! If it's not the case, it would be worth
considering canceled authentication as G_IO_ERROR_FAILED_HANDLED, which
seems to be intended for this case.

Are you in a hurry? I said in about 10 days, and I'm going to release

Lucid inclusion. The only requirement is to be here for GNOME 2.30,

report bugs instead of having to wait for another released to get the
fixes.

[Bug 549810] Re: Newly created groups don't show up in users-admin

2010-03-28 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 475974 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475974

Actually, I think that's a duplicate of bug 475974. What happens is that
the first time you open the group settings dialog, the GID is set to 0,
and group creation fails. Just close and launch the dialog again, and it
works. This is fixed for a long time with users-admin 2.28.2, but Karmic
only has 2.28.1.

Sadly, I don't think somebody is going to work on a backport of the (trivial
fix) now. Quoting Martin Pitt on the other report:
If we have another g-s-t SRU in karmic, this can be slipped in,
but I think it's not serious enough to warrant the effort of an SRU by itself.

Thanks for testing anyway, I believe that in Lucid users-admin will be
much more reliable.

[Bug 543042] Re: pressing CANCEL in policykit super user mount dialog shows silly error message

2010-03-28 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Moving to nautilus, as PolicyKit itself provides a way to know whether
authentication was canceled or whether it failed. See POLKIT_ERROR_CANCELLED,
which is the GError returned by polkit_authority_check_authorization_finish(),
 at http://hal.freedesktop.org/docs/polkit/polkit-1-polkiterror.html.

So the problem may be with Nautilus not checking that value, or with the
backend that Nautilus calls not returning that value as a special case.
In the first case, that's a paper cut, in the latter, it's more complex.

[Bug 544570] Re: [users-admin] Changing password many times in the same session hangs and corrupts it

2010-03-26 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Hmm. You reported the bug against the gnome-system-tools, so I thought
that was a bug in users-admin - actually, you first experienced it with
gnome-about-me, which is in gnome-control-center. But I can confirm it
happens with users-admin, which partly uses the same code.

OTOH you say you've been able to reproduce it when creating an account,
which means this happens *with users-admin, and the first time it's
changed*, which changes the description of the issue. Then you say you
were able to change it via user accounts (i.e. users-admin): so what? Do
you mean users-admin hung when changing password for the new account
(i.e. at account creation time), but changed the password correctly the
second time you tried? And then what about gnome-keyring: how can it
have asked you for your old password, since you were not able to set it
for the new user (i.e. it was empty)?

I'd like you to create a 'test' account and try changing the password
many times using 'su test' and then 'passwd', as many times as you want.
If the tool hangs at some point, or displays a message different than
other times, we'll have an important information.

Note that the code used to change your own password is not the same as
the code used to change other user's passwords. So you can't get the
same hang in both.

[Bug 184711] Re: network-admin error: The interface does not exist

2010-03-26 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
I don't think we can close the bug because it was confirmed on the
upstream report to be still present in 2.28.0. No code changes have been
made since then, so the bug is still here. Sure, network-admin is no
longer shipped by default, so that's less of a problem, but from the POV
of this tool, it's still a bug. If one day we decide to kill network-
admin, then we'll close all of those bugs at once.

[Bug 544570] Re: [users-admin] Changing password many times in the same session hangs and corrupts it

2010-03-26 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Ah, thanks for the clarification!

So:
- have you ever experienced this bug with users-admin?
- have you ever been able to change your password successfully using
gnome-about-me?
- have you installed special password or PAM packages such as pam-cracklib?
- is the fact that you change the password many times in the same session
really a factor of the bug?

Please ensure you are always using the same sequence of passwords when
changing them, since there can be differences depending on the order you
type them (e.g. two similar passwords will lead 'passwd' to act
differently, which can explain the hang).

(The gnome-keyring bug can be fixed by running
Applications-Accessories-Keyrings and Encryption Keys, and changing
the password for the problematic keyring.)

[Bug 549092] Re: users-admin: users are not added to users group

2010-03-26 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
What version are you using? Since 2.29, users-admin simply runs 'adduser
$LOGIN --disabled-password', so everything that happens after that is a
problem with adduser and adduser.conf. Profiles are a different matter,
and by default only add membership to special groups like video, admin,

Thanks for your report. I strongly suspect your problem is the same as
bug 533870. Are you using a 64 bits version of Ubuntu? If so, then
please try the package from comment #30 on that report, and tell me
whether it fixes the problem. Thanks, and please continue reporting bugs

[Bug 544570] Re: Changing Password Hangs, Corrupts User Account Password

2010-03-25 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Confirmed. This doesn't occur everytime, but for some weird reason the dialog
hangs, and the password is set to something such as:
$6$X/OldoQr$HxKsor.mQesg6EXrtIZqEHK4wKm718YVDowpV97Gm60L8rwfz07moFvNneQzmFqDGB5kv9yR6cWlEbdAc619y.
which seems to be invalid because running 'passwd' doesn't ask for the old
password. It's likely that something is going wrong while users-admin runs
'passwd' in the background.

I could not reproduce the problem with gnome-about-me nor direct use of
'passwd', but I wasn't able to reproduce the problem twice with users-
admin either.

But how the hell have you discovered this bug? Are you trying to get
developers mad? ;-) I set priority to Medium only because it's very
unlikely users will ever trigger this bug.

Note to reporter to fix his system: just run 'sudo passwd $USERNAME' if
you're able to log in from another admin, or run this command from the
recovery mode (choice at boot). Then setting the password to its last
valid value may fix the eCryptfs issue too.

Additional note: before debugging users-admin further, we should
determine whether we can reproduce the bug by running 'passwd' from

password got corrupt, which is hard to understand if only users-admin
hung.

[Bug 546873] Re: User Administration Tool has significantly delayed repsonse (with no feedback)

2010-03-25 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yes, I see what you're talking about. And no, that's not a duplicate of
bug 542744 (there, committing leads to an error message).

What happens is that we don't check for actual changes when you click
OK, we always commit changes. Everytime groups are involved, we commit
changes to all groups, which takes some time.

In the upcoming 2.10.0 version, the system-tools-backends don't apply
changes when nothing has actually changed. This makes most operations
must faster, especially when no changes were made at all. Plus, we no
longer reload settings for each separate group commit. So I consider
this fixed upstream, it should be in Lucid soon.

2010-03-22 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Cool. For the main group problem: the group is automatically created,
it's just that it's not shown right after adding it. Do you have a
precise reason to immediately go to the groups dialog and try to edit
this group? Fixing that bug currently requires a few hacks that I'm not
sure I can commit now that we're close to the release. So better be sure
it's worth the risk.

[Bug 543622] Re: No GUI to rename computer in 10.04

2010-03-22 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
network-admin won't be back in Lucid since it conflicts with
NetworkManager in most of its features BUT hostname setting. That's why
it's been removed for a few releases now.

It's really sad there's no GUI to change hostname, but adding a whole
tool to do that would be silly. If you really need a GUI for that,
install the package - else, 'gksudo gedit /etc/hostname' isn't that
complex either. Do people edit hostnames that often?

If you want to discuss that issue, you may want to talk with developers
on #ubuntu-desktop on IRC, or drop a mail to ubuntu-devel-discuss. But I
can guarantee you there won't be a solution for Lucid (nobody has even
cared since the few releases network-admin was removed). In the long-
term, I'd suggest discussing that with NetworkManager developers, they
may have plans to add more general settings in a tab; I fail to see what
other configuration tool could present this setting.

[Bug 542183] Re: [users-admin] Changing UID doesn't work

2010-03-20 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Much thanks for the report. This was indeed a mistake : we were
identifying users using their UID instead of their login. When changing
their UID, we weren't able to find the user to apply the new settings
to. It's now fixed upstream and will be available in the system-tools-
backends 2.10.0, for Lucid.

Please continue testing Lucid and reporting bugs! May I give you an
advice? Please stay very specific about the bug you report. For example,
here, the bug is not that you can't hide users in GDM: this is just a
consequence of the bug. The precise problem is that changing UID is not
working as it's supposed to be. This will help triagers and developers
to fix the bugs you find.

[Bug 542744] Re: user group administration tool freezes temporary and reports failed authentication even for successfull actions

2010-03-20 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for the report. I think there are several different issues at
stake here.

First, when creating an user, its main group is creating under the hood
by adduser, and we don't show it until the tool is restarted. This is a
known problem, but it's not easy to fix properly, at least in a stable
release. But this shouldn't be a major bug: why would you need to edit
the user's main group right after creating it?

Second, groups creation seems to fail *for any group* in Lucid. But the
error I get is about permissions, not Unknown error. Could you check
that it's the case on your machine? This bug seems to be fixed in the
current upstream version, though.

[Bug 541612] Re: [wishlist] add option to allow user to install signed packages

2010-03-19 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The problem is, most of the privileges shown in users-admin are old-
school Unix groups that aren't used at all by PolicyKit. So we'd have to
support a completely knew privileges tab, based on PolicyKit. Not sure
that will happen in users-admin.

Note that an easier solution would be to add an option to allow all
users to install trusted packages, that would go in one of the
configuration tools.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yes, Mark: flamewars aside, please ensure buttons on the left are not
turning into a nightmare when GNOME Shell is used. I can confirm that
reaching e.g. the icon button in the left corner of a maximized window
is very likely to lead you to hit the hot corner, especially on
touchpads - and even for experienced people.

It's a common practice to move the cursor to the top right corner of the
screen, and then move it down to the close button of a window, instead
of fighting to reach it directly. This won't work when Ubuntu switches
to GNOME Shell, and reverting this after Lucid would be too bad.

[Bug 540247] Re: [users-admin] no authorization dialog, unable to add user

2010-03-17 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for the report. The warning you see on start is likely to come
from a bug on 64 bit machines, but it shouldn't be related with your
problem.

Are you able to change a user account type, or its name? Please check
this for a user different than the current one, as it won't work because
of the bug quoted above. Are you able to authenticate when e.g. trying
to set time with time-admin?

Please also follow instructions For Users at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGnomeSystemTools. Thanks!

[Bug 540247] Re: [users-admin] no authorization dialog, unable to add user

2010-03-17 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
If you can't authenticate from time-admin either, there must be a problem with
PolicyKit. Please run
pkcheck --allow-user-interaction --process PID --action-id
org.freedesktop.systemtoolsbackends.self.set
and
pkcheck --allow-user-interaction --process PID --action-id
org.freedesktop.systemtoolsbackends.set

Replace PID with the PID of a process run by your user, e.g. start
users-admin and get its PID using 'pidof users-admin'.

Are you sure changing your own name really works, i.e. changes are still
there when you restart users-admin? There's a bug in current Lucid
version where we pretend we change the name. Are you able to
authenticate e.g. in System-Administration-Network Connections, trying
to make a connection For All Users?

[Bug 540247] Re: [users-admin] no authorization dialog, unable to add user

2010-03-17 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
OK, you have a PolicyKit problem: you just need to have an
authentication agent running. That's why it works in KDE and not in
GNOME. Start /usr/lib/policykit-gnome/polkit-gnome-manager in the
background, and everything will be fine.

Now we need to find out why this daemon is not running automatically. Do
you have a file at /usr/share/dbus-1/services/gnome-
org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.AuthenticationAgent.service? Are there errors
in /var/log/messages about DBus not being able to start that daemon?

[Bug 160862] Re: users-admin (System-Administration-Users and Groups) overwrites group file

2010-03-16 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The fix has been released with the system-tools-backends 2.9.3, which
are not in Lucid yet (but as I said, that bug isn't really harmful there
since we won't remove all groups if the configuration is empty).

[Bug 534154] Re: system-tools-backends crashed with SIGSEGV in dbus_message_iter_append_basic()

2010-03-13 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The fix was really trivial: when writing the code, I forgot to make a
variable used to return an error message as NULL before passing it to
the authentication function. Since this is required for the function to
fill in the error message, we were getting an invalid pointer: in case
of error, we were reading invalid memory an crashing.

You can see the one-line fix here:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/system-tools-backends-clone/commit/?id=00d6fafc4ee7788e103244bc8159e82373b22b9e

This fix will be released upstream with 2.10.0, in about 10 days.

Thanks for the feedback. Please continue to test Lucid, and especially
the gnome-system-tools!
