I've run Hardy on a few computers where the home directories were NFS- mounted. Because of some NFS-problems they would sometimes lose the connection, and thus the users would have no home directory. In that case, there would always be a notification box right after login which said something like I cannot find the home directory /home/username. This is llikely to break things, but you may try to log in if you wish. Click OK to log in or Cancel to cancel. (in a much better wording). I'm not sure if it was gdm or some other component that did this. The computers had gdm, but otherwise both ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop was installed and I would usually log in to KDE, but I guess without the home directory there was no way for gdm to know that. Found the problem: During troubleshooting I had turned off keyboard repetition in System - Keyboard - General, since when this bug was present, I would get double characters (probably because the delay got set to zero). That's strange, my menu.lst wasn't updating for some reason when I installed new kernels. I had the same behaviour with an early install of karmic. I thought it was because I also had windows and Jaunty on other partitions. Next time I installed karmic it started updating menu.lst after every new kernel. I'm no expert on dpms issues, but since `xset dmps force off` works and whatever gnome-power-manager does doesn't work, I'm guessing that the bug may be within there. Maybe it could be fixed since many people have this intel video card. Shouldn't it be fixed in xserver-xorg-video-intel? I don't think everyone with the same video card has this problem, it's probably specific to the Amilo or even your particular model. I have the same video chipset as you have (except I have (rev0c) instead of (rev03) in the output of `lspci -vvnn`) and I don't have this problem. My guess is that it is a problem in how the kernel interfaces with your particular hardware. I don't know whereis the best place to change the backlight control setting permanently. Good to know that it does not add anything to Xorg.0.log. That means we can exclude something calling xrandr as being the source of this bug. I'm not exactly sure where it belongs, but I guess probably the kernel. Screen brightness change goes through the ACPI interface and those bugs are filed to the kernel. In Xrandr.txt (output of `xrandr --verbose`) you have the following lines: BACKLIGHT_CONTROL: kernel supported: native legacy combination kernel BACKLIGHT: 0 (0x) range: (0,7) which bacally says that the kernel has control of the backlight and that it currently is at level 0 of 7. Could you verify that the first 0 on the last line changes when you turn the brightness up and down? And check what happens to this number when you go beyond the top. Another place to check the brightness level is in the /proc file system. On my computer /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD0/brightness has information about the brightness level. You may want to check how this changes when you change the brightness level and you trigger the bug. Also, does the same happen when you use the hotkeys (Fn+something) to change the brightness level? Strange... Does the same happen with /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD0/brightness? (it goes up to max, drops down, etc.) Also, 0 should not be minimum, not maximum... For sure you have a /proc/acpi directory. Do you have a video directory in there? If so, do you have a VID directory in there? If so, a LCD0 directory in there? If so, what files do you have there? Nothing under /proc are real files, it's a filesystem the kernel uses to inform/communicate with users and programs. Most of the so-called files there are text files, and you can read them with `cat filename`. In my case: $ cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD0/brightness levels: 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 65 70 75 80 85 90 100 current: 75 I don't think the bug is in the intel driver. It is likely a ACPI bug that belongs in the kernel. Take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI and upload the information they ask for. TomasHermosilla, on my machine (Thinkpad X61 Tablet with intel 965GM chipset) suspend and resume works fine from the installed Jaunty, but not frome the LiveCD. Therefore, this bug is only present in a LiveCD session. This means that you are experiencing a different bug from mine, but with very similar symptoms. Please report it as a separate bug, but feel free to leave a link to that bug report here (and vice versa). I just updated the acpi-support package to 0.117, and the computer now only goes back to sleep once (same as when acpid was stopped before). I also only get one event from `lshal -m`: 11:46:09.220: computer_logicaldev_input_3 condition ButtonPressed = sleep I'm attaching the full output of `lshal -m` when it goes to sleep, wakes up for a moment and wakes up permanently, in case this is useful. Stopping acpid before suspend reduces the number of suspend-resume cycles from 3 to 2 on my Thinkpad X61 Tablet. I guess those for whom the problem is solved only had 2 cycles to begin with (i.e. the computer would stay awake after the second wake-up call) (?) I attach logs from `gnome-power-manager --no-daemon --verbose` with and without acpid running. To make the logs easer to read, I did the relevant actions just after each whole minute. It turns out that the black screen that I first saw, was actually the screensaver (which by default is a black screen). When I change the screensaver this is what comes up on the screen after resume from suspend. When I press a key the screen goes black and shows the mouse cursor in a glimpse before the screensaver is back. Killing the gnome-screensaver process makes the problem go away, and subsequent suspends and resumes work. It seems to be a Lenovo Thinkpad specific problem, since Noel has a T61p (from the attached HalComputerInfo.txt), Marc has a X200s and Jeffrey has a X61 Tablet. I can also confirm on a X61 Tablet using a Jaunty alpha-2 LiveCD.
