[Bug 317353] Re: Evolution: "Unknown Mailbox" and "UID not allowed now" when using IMAP

2009-03-09 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I finally got the info you asked for. (I kept forgetting to run with the
debug settings after reboots so I kept missing the bug.) The file is a
massive 1.1 GB though so I only uploaded the last 6000 lines. I'll keep
the whole thing around though so let me know if you need to see more of
it.

[Bug 317353] [NEW] Evolution: "Unknown Mailbox" and "UID not allowed now" when using IMAP

2009-01-14 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid 32-bit, but I've had this bug for a long
time. Every now and then, after downloading some new message headers
from my Gmail account (using IMAP), Evolution gets into a state where it
can't download anything new after that. If I then attempt to open one of
the new messages that I got headers for, I get the error:

Unable to retrieve message
IMAP command failed: Unknown Mailbox: INBOX (Failure)

If I try again (by going to an old, cached message and then going back),
I get a different error:

Unable to retrieve message
IMAP command failed: UID not allowed now.

Images of the errors are attached. Retrying again continues to give the
second error from then on. The problem clears once I exit Evolution and
restart it.

[Bug 232375] Re: weather not shown in world-clock-applet when computer timezone differs from home location timezone

2008-05-24 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Confirmed. I live in Seattle and had my computer's timezone set to
America/Vancouver, but the gnome clock applet uses America/Los Angeles
for the timezone of the Seattle location, so they didn't match and it
never showed the weather in the system tray. Only once I changed the
timezones to match did the weather show up properly. (Note that the
pull-down window with the calendar and world map _does_ show the weather
regardless, it just doesn't show up in the system tray.)

Perhaps the author did this deliberately so that only the user's home
location's weather would show up in the system tray (i.e., instead of
the weather for each location)? I think the right solution though is to
have a check box for each location that says "show the weather for this
location in the system tray". Or instead just always show the weather
for the first location in the list.

I have attached a screenshot showing the two places where the timezone
must match.

[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-05-24 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
For anyone still having problems with the timezone, the root of the
issue is that the timezone of your location and the timezone of your
computer must match in order for the weather to show up in the system
tray. See bug 232375.

[Bug 223418] Re: System tray loads with all non-applet icons "popped out" into windows

2008-05-24 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
ilpillo:

I deleted .gconf/apps/panel and at first the problem went away, but when
I added back all of my applets the problem came back. This seems to
reinforce the hypothesis that the problem is due to load time. The
applets I'm currently using are:

Quit...
Clock
Volume Control
User Switcher
Keyboard Indicator
Search for Files...
Timer
Deskbar
Tomboy Notes

Tomboy in particular takes ages to load, so it might be why this happens
so often for me, but it has happened even without Tomboy. I have seen it
happen with just the following set:

Quit...
Clock
Volume Control
User Switcher
Keyboard Indicator
Timer

[Bug 232375] Re: weather not shown in world-clock-applet when computer timezone differs from home location timezone

2008-05-25 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
The main problem is that the user can end up with no weather showing in
the system tray, but with no indication of why. I was saying above that
you should be able to set a location to be your home location without
having to change your computer's timezone to match. (i.e., don't make it
depend on tzdata at all.)

Alternatively, an even simpler change would be to take the "Set" button
that appears in the pull-down menu (the one that sets that to be your
home location and changes the timezone) and put it in Preferences ->
Locations too, together with the Home icon. That way it becomes much
clearer why there's no weather in the system tray. (I've attached a
mock-up of this.) Deeta and others in a similar situation could still
use the stand-alone Weather Report applet, which doesn't require your
timezone to match.

The tooltip for the "Set" button should also be changed to "Set this as
my home location". Currently it is "Set as current timezone for this
computer", which is missing part of the picture.

I also get that after every reboot. I'm in Seattle, US, but it says I'm

never causes me any problems. The weather information still shows up and
the timezone of my system is still correct. Have you made sure to set
the _computer_'s timezone to Europe/Amsterdam too? (See the screenshots

[Bug 164586] Re: "Open" button in Import Folder in Rhythmbox does nothing if pressed immediately in certain folders

2008-02-16 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I have upgraded Rhythmbox to the Hardy version and tried what you
described, but you seem to be mistaken. Rhythmbox _does_ support re-
importing the same directory. If you import a directory and then later
put a new music file there and re-import the directory, then the file is
correctly added to your music library. The bug though, as I describe in
my report, is that if you press Open immediately (i.e., the dialog comes
up in the very directory that you want to import), then (for some
directories) the button doesn't do anything and the dialog stays open.

No matter what the right design for the app is, leaving the dialog up
without even showing an error message is definitely a bug.

[Bug 152493] Re: Compiz + Clearlooks => Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various title bar events

2008-02-17 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Interesting news. It turns out that this is not only on Clearlooks after
all; I have now observed it on the Mist theme, which has its own engine.
The frequency of the bug on Mist also seems to vary. Some times it can
go for ages without the bug happening at all. Other times it will happen
just as much as on Human. It also somehow seems to be dependent on the
app somehow, because right now it is happening constantly for Firefox
but not at all for any of the other maximized windows.

** Summary changed:

- Compiz + Clearlooks => Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear

+ Compiz: Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various

** Description changed:

  Original description:

"The title bar on any window seems to disappear every 7 times something
on the title bar is updated. I can cause the problem to occur by
changing tabs in firefox 7 times to update the text, or by moving the
mouse back and forth over the "X" button in order to cause it to become
a lighter shade momentarily. It happens after exactly 7 updates, no
matter what. When the title bar disappears it takes the text with it.
Usually the icon stays though, however I've seen it occasionally cut off
part of the icon as well.

I'm running gutsy, with compiz set to "Normal" in the "Visual Effects"
tab. I have an nvidia card and am using the nvidia-glx-new driver."

[Bug 152493] Re: Compiz: Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various title bar events

2008-02-17 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I have now seen this on Crux, High Contrast Inverse, and High Contrast
Large Print Inverse. That's all of the default Ubuntu themes now, so I
think it's pretty clear: this is not theme- or engine-dependent. But
some themes trigger it more often than others. I'm going to leave it
open on ubuntulooks though since it definitely does affect that way
more. The ubuntulooks people can mark it Invalid if they want.

Another interesting note: on Crux, which has fairly noticeable window
borders, the borders are affected by this bug too. That is, when the
title bar disappears, so do the borders.

[Bug 152493] Re: Compiz: Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various title bar events

2008-02-22 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Today I saw this on unmaximized windows for the first time, using the
Mist theme. Pictures are attached. (Look at the terminal windows.)

I use the traditional UNIX style of focus switching (i.e., whichever
window the mouse is over has focus), and I've found that switching focus
by just moving back and forth between windows can repro this.
Interestingly, it seems that mousing over the title bar's buttons does
not.

Supremely ironically, the screenshots were taken as I was filling out a
new bug report for a separate compiz bug. :(

[Bug 219468] [NEW] [Hardy] Synaptics touchpad disabled by default after upgrade

2008-04-18 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running Gutsy, but with some packages
installed from Hardy, including the Kernel/X/Compiz/NVIDIA packages.
This bug might be a symptom of that configuration, but I'm filing it
just in case, because if it's not then it's super high-priority ...

A few days ago I upgraded gnome-control-center to the latest Hardy
version and my touchpad stopped working. It would work in the GDM
greeter, but after logging in it was completely non-functional. After a
bunch of troubleshooting, I eventually figured out that the problem was
that it was literally being disabled after login; i.e., "synclient -l"
showed that TouchpadOff was 1. Eventually I figured out that Gnome had
added an option to disable the touchpad (in bug 184913) and that it was
on! (i.e., disabled.) After checking "Enabled" in System -> Preferences
-> Mouse -> Touchpad there is no longer any problem, but this suggests
that other people who upgrade will lose their touchpads too. The default
should definitely be for it to be enabled.

[Bug 223418] [NEW] System tray loads with all non-applet icons "popped out" into windows

2008-04-27 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running pure up-to-date Hardy final. When
logging in, I often (but not always) see a bug where the system tray
loads in a state where all of the system tray icons for my session
startup programs are "popped out" into tiny windows at the top-left of
the screen (see screenshots). The icons for the standard set of gnome
applets behave correctly though.

When in this state, any system tray program loaded after login will ALSO
display its icon in a tiny popped-out window. However, the condition can
be cleared by running "killall gnome-panel" (forcing it to restart), but
sometimes you must do this several times for the problem to go away.
Similarly, if the bug in NOT manifesting, restarting gnome-panel in this
way will eventually bring it back.

I have noticed that when the bug occurs, the popped-out windows usually
start showing up BEFORE the system tray has fully loaded, which suggests
to me that the problem may be due to the system tray taking too long to
load.

The bug occurs both with and without desktop effects enabled.

[Bug 228337] [NEW] file-roller silently allows the user to exit in the middle of an operation

2008-05-08 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

This bug is present in Hardy but it has been around for a long time. In
file-roller, clicking the exit button at the top-right does not give you
any warning if exiting would cancel an in-progress operation. For
example, if you click exit while in the middle of extracting an archive,
then it silently exits and leaves you with corrupt output sitting on
disk. Similarly when creating an archive. This is a problem for small
archives that the user expects to finish extracting immediately, because
the user will probably click the exit button right away, which will give
them corrupt data if the computer happens to be a little slow that time.

Ideally, clicking exit should block waiting for the current operation to
complete, potentially timing out and displaying a prompt if that's
taking too long.

[Bug 229259] [NEW] gnome keyboard shortcuts ignore layout changes

2008-05-11 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I have an up-to-date pure Hardy install where I have GNOME set up to use
two keyboard layout variants in gnome-keyboard-properties: USA/Dvorak
and USA/Default. Dvorak is the default. It is also the one specified in
my Xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
Option "XkbVariant" "dvorak"
EndSection

The problem is that the GNOME keyboard shortcuts configured with gnome-
keybinding-properties seem to ignore it when I switch between keyboard
layouts. They always use my default layout, Dvorak. The rest of my apps
use the current layout correctly. The problem occurs regardless of how I
switch layouts. e.g., using layout switching shortcuts, the layout
switching applet, or even re-ordering the two layouts in gnome-keyboard-
properties all gets ignored by the GNOME keyboard shortcuts.

I realize that this bug may have been intended as a feature, but if so
then it should be configurable.

[Bug 229259] Re: gnome keyboard shortcuts ignore layout changes

2008-05-11 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Yes, as I mentioned it is only the GNOME keyboard shortcuts that are
stuck on Dvorak. Others apps correctly switch layouts.

I don't believe this is the same as bug 23244 because even in QWERTY
mode it is still only the Dvorak key combination that is recognized;
pressing the QWERTY key combination does nothing. Bug 23244 is different
in that ALL layouts' key combinations are recognized ALL of the time (in
the affected apps).

2008-11-19 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I have this bug too and would like to help, but it's not clear what info
you're asking for. As thegve said, the problem is 100% CPU usage, not a
real crash, so what sort of backtrace is it that you want? Do you just
need us to get a full backtrace of gnome-panel during its 100% CPU
usage?

[Bug 136711] Re: Show Hidden Files broken in common dialogs

2007-11-12 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I get this on a 100% fresh gutsy install with a slightly different
behaviour. When I follow the steps in the original report, disabling
Show Hidden Files at the end makes the file picker instead show ONLY
hidden files, and only a few of them at that! For this to happen though,
you must have closed and re-opened the file picker after enabling Show
Hidden Files (as directed in the report). I have not encountered the
duplicates from Ryiden's video.

Attached is my own desktop session capture.

[Bug 164586] "Open" button in Import Folder in Rhythmbox does nothing if pressed immediately in certain folders

2007-11-22 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have a fresh, up-to-date gutsy i686 installation.

In Rhythmbox, when choosing Import Folder, the Gnome open folder dialog
will open in the last folder that was opened (as expected). For certain
folders, if the user clicks Open immediately (i.e., that folder is
already the one that the user wants to import), then nothing happens.
The dialog does not close and there is no error message. In order to
open the folder, the user must navigate to a different folder, navigate
back, and then click Open. For me, this happens with "~/Untagged Music",
but not with ~/Music, ~/Desktop, or ~/. As a test, it also happens for
me with "~/Folder with Spaces", "~/FolderWithoutSpaces", and
"~/Folderwithoutcapitals". For the folders with which this occurs, it is
100% reproducible.

Note that I have also seen this bug in Debian.

Repro steps:

Try the following steps with a variety of different folders (recommended
to try creating the ones I named above).

1) Open rhythmbox.
2) Choose File -> Import Folder. Navigate to a folder of your choice and click
Open.
3) Choose File -> Import Folder again. (The dialog begins in the same folder
that you opened in (2).)
4) Click Open without navigating anywhere.

Results: Eventually, you should find a folder for which step (4) consistently
does nothing.
Expected: The folder should be imported.
Workaround: Navigate to a different folder, navigate back, and click Open.

Note that since Rhythmbox doesn't track additions to imported folders,
users may frequently be re-importing the same folder, so particular
users may see this bug a lot.

I don't believe this is the same as bug 23244 because even in QWERTY
mode it is still only the Dvorak key combination that is recognized;
pressing the QWERTY key combination does nothing. Bug 23244 is different
in that ALL layouts' key combinations are recognized ALL of the time (in
the affected apps).

I have attached a screenshot showing the two places where the timezone
must match.

ilpillo:

I deleted .gconf/apps/panel and at first the problem went away, but when

reinforce the hypothesis that the problem is due to load time. The
applets I'm currently using are:

Quit...
Clock
Volume Control
User Switcher
Keyboard Indicator

Timer

Tomboy in particular takes ages to load, so it might be why this happens

User Switcher
Keyboard Indicator

Currently it is "Set as current timezone for this
computer", which is missing part of the picture.

can't download anything new after that. If I then attempt to open one of

2008-02-23 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Are you sure? You don't think we should see if the other reporters can
confirm my findings? Unless there's some info that hasn't been relayed
(like that this has already been tracked down to the Clearlooks code or
something), then I don't see why these would be distinct problems. All
the other reporters seem to be using NVIDIA cards too, after all.

harold:

I also get that after every reboot. I'm in Seattle, US, but it says I'm
somewhere in either Africa or Asia--don't remember which. However, that
never causes me any problems. The weather information still shows up and
the timezone of my system is still correct. Have you made sure to set
the _computer_'s timezone to Europe/Amsterdam too? (See the screenshots
in the bug that I attached above.)

[Bug 289241] Re: Gnome-panel freezes when starting an application on the secondary display

Tested xcompmgr just now; the bug does not occur. I am using the compiz
versions in the hardy repos now.

I should mention that the little explanations that pop up when you hover
over icons are also delayed by about 1 second (i.e., for a total delay
of just under 2 seconds, instead of the usual which is just under 1
second).
