[Bug 35661] Re: Cant' change default sound card

2006-04-13 Thread Jeff Bullard
I have same problem. After a fresh install of Dapper the on-board SiS sound
card is set as default. Go to System--Preferences--Sound The default sound
card is listed as SiS Sl7012. Try to change to C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC8.
Change accepted but not saved upon exit. Sound card immediately reverts to the
SiS on-board card. The only app that I have found to get sound through the PCI
card is XMMS. XMMS sound prefrences: OSS driver configured for the PCI card.

[Bug 40815] Right clicking on server and clicking Close doesn't disconnect me!

2006-04-22 Thread Jeff Bailey
Public bug reported:

Affects: xchat-gnome (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Major
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When I right click on the server, like Gimpnet and click close, the item
is removed from the tree view and I leave the channels, but I still
retain a connection on the server. I have no way of disconnecting from
this. /msgs that people send me don't appear, although they are logged

Setting major priority because of the data loss.

[Bug 245811] Re: nautilus displays wrong icon for jpg image

[Bug 233889] Re: nautilus cannot handle

2008-08-29 Thread Jeff Bronks
I reinstalled 8.04 and the problem went away. I know this isn't as
satisfying as finding and fixing the problem, but it's really nice to
have everything working again. My home directory survived the
reinstall, so I reloaded various apps including Thunderbird and GnuCash,
and they were able to find their files and carry on working as if
nothing had happened. Result!

My guess is that my system was damaged when I upgraded it from Gutsy to
Hardy. There may be a bug in the upgrade process.

There are no files in /var/crash. When I launch Evolution it freezes

challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
 apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
 /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-
 file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where
_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Re: [Bug 373842] Re: evolution crashes on startup

I was able to get Evolution working again by renaming the .evolution
directory and then restarting. No big deal since I had only been using
it a few hours and my messages were still on the my email servers.
Unfortunately while I was trying to recreate the bug I accidently wrote
over the old .evolution directory. If it comes up again I will get the
stacktrace. I do like Evolution and will continue using it. The bug
did motivate me to learn backup/restore functions right away.

Hello Sebastien,

I am not sure of the difference between a stacktrace and a backtrace.
Here is what I do

In terminal

gdb evolution 21 | tee gdb-evolution.txt
handle SIG33 pass nostop noprint
set pagination 0
run

Then in the Evolution gui

Create an event that recurs every week.
Save the event
Edit the event by changing the time.
Select all (freezes at this step).

In Terminal
ctr c
backtrace full
info registers
thread apply all backtrace
quit

Attached is the file.

[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring

2008-12-03 Thread Jeff Powell
I, also, am running Max's workaround. The odd thing is that even if you
do what he suggests in gnome-session-properties, you'll still see the
Gnome keyring wrapper daemon running on the machine. However, it will
stop messing with ssh keys, and the standard ssh-agent commands will
then work to let you manipulate keys in the usual way because ssh-agent
is running.

The GUI lead me to believe I was turning off the Gnome keyring wrapper
daemon, but apparently that isn't what it really does.

So much for truth in advertising. Or something. :)

[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring

2008-12-04 Thread Jeff Powell
Max, good question. Right now, on the computer in question, I see only
the daemon. Not the wrapper. What I saw back in mid-November (when I
first tried your workaround) I can't say. I probably had only the
daemon itself running at that time as well, but who knows.

8.10 hasn't been nearly stable enough for me to avoid reboots in the
interim. At least 2 kernel updates and 3 or 4 issues of a black screen
in X (when coming back after the screen saver has been invoked) that
won't go away and require a reboot, etc. I wish my Ubuntu experience had
been a smooth one, but it's been really rocky. I've got other issues as
well that I won't bother to detail here.

Anyway, to answer you, it appears the keyring is running, which is
apparently the right thing, so disregard my comment.

[Bug 287689] [NEW] gthumb --import-photos doesn't work in intrepid without intervention

2008-10-22 Thread Jeff Bowden
Public bug reported:

In 8.04 I had configured gthumb --import-photos to run when I plugged in
my camera. (System | Preferences | Removable Drives and Media...).
But 8.10 when I plug in my camera, Nautilus mounts it via gphoto2 vfs
which makes gthumb complain that it can't grab the device.

I can't find any way to tell Nautilus not to mount the camera. I tried
setting the File Management Preferences for Photos to do nothing but
it still does the something of mounting it.

The only workaround I've found is to open up nautilus, unmount the
camera and then run gthumb --import-photos from the command line.

I don't know if this is a bug in hal, nautilus, or gnome-volume-manager.
It's probably not a gthumb bug per se but I'm not sure where to file it
really.

[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring

2008-11-07 Thread Jeff Powell
I can confirm this bug on a vanilla 8.10 install. I see the same error
repeated 3 times after each reboot:

Nov 5 10:45:41 dworkin gdm[4869]: gnome-keyring-daemon: couldn't lookup
keyring component setting: Failed to contact configuration server; some
possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit,
or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See
http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1:
Failed to get connection to session: dbus-launch failed to autolaunch
D-Bus session: No protocol specified

This is a problem on several levels, and I'd probably prefer to get gkr
to stop dealing with ssh keys entirely. If anyone knows of a work
around that would make that happen I'd love to see that here.

Is there a way to simply turn off gnome-keyring-daemon? If I did that,
what else would break? I can't find it in 8.10's services management
UI, so I don't know if a typical user can shut it down without some sort
of nasty issues cropping up.

But, shutting it down might get me past the silly popup window asking
for my passphrase, and let me just enter it into the terminal, where it
should be done.

Just upgraded (well, fresh install - not upgrade from Intrepid) to
Jaunty RC a week ago myself (and updated to Final today) and I'm
experiencing this issue as well with my POP3 mailbox. When Evolution has
been running for at least an hour, when I click on any new message, it
comes up with Formatting message... and just hangs. You can see other
tasks periodically try to start such as polling for new mail etc. You
can't close Evolution either.

I can confirm that as noted, you have to kill the /usr/lib/evolution-
data-server-2.26 task and then Evolution bounces right back into action
without the need to quit and restart Evolution completely.

[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring

2009-01-05 Thread Jeff Powell
I have a related question. In Ubuntu 8.04, Max's workaround doesn't
work. (My initial problem was with 8.10, I know.) Max said:

1. Add the line unset SSH_AUTH_SOCK to ~/.xsessionrc (creating it if it
doesn't exist).
2. Run gnome-session-properties and untick GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper.

But in 8.04, there is no GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper choice in gnome-
session-properties.

What I want to do is get gnome-keyring-daemon out of the loop entirely.
Don't ask for my ssh passphrase in a dialog window, just let it be
entered on the command line. I'll use ssh-add -D when I'm done to get
things out of memory.

Is there some way to get gnome-keyring to stop acting as an ssh-agent
(or whatever it's doing) in 8.04 and instead just let the real ssh-agent
do it's thing?

Thanks much.

Thanks much, Kenny. That did the trick.

I wish I knew were all this documentation existed. I'd never heard of
gconf-editor. Seems like a tool that fundamental should be right on the
ubuntu menus somewhere, but I can't find it there.

Anyway, it works. Thanks again.

[Bug 123458] Re: GNOME panel can't always launch folders with filenames containing spaces

2007-10-27 Thread Jeff Connelly
Still seeing this in Gutsy Gibbon, clean install. Steps to reproduce:

1. On desktop, Right-Click - Create Folder.
2. Drag untitled folder to the GNOME panel.
3. Drag the folder across the GNOME panel.
4. Click the icon.

Results:
Icon changes to a spring with a platform on top. Clicking it pops up a dialog:

Error
Could not launch application
Not a launchable item

Right-click - Properties brings up the Launcher Properties dialog,
which says:

Type: Application
Name:
Command:
Comment:

(all the fields except Type are blank).

Not exactly sure how to re-open. I set the Status of this bug to New.

[Bug 25106] Re: evolution-exchange: unable to setup exchange account

2007-10-30 Thread Jeff Strahl
OS: Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy)

When I attempt to create the Exchange account, the Forward button
stays grayed out even after successful authentication. The IT group
uses Exchange 2000 as the email system.

I can access the OWA via
https://webmail.companyname.com/exchange/Jeff.Strahl and that's how I
have configured the evolution-exchange plugin. The plugin prompts me
for a password, but then the Forward button stays grayed out.

In the debug log, I notice that there are 401 Access Denied errors,
but it proceeds and the last entry seem to be the actual pages.

Attached is the log file.

Thank you for sending in your bug report. Actually, when you open an
archive (tarball in this case) Nautilus actually runs another
application called file-roller. If you look in file-roller's menu there

behaviour by the original developer. Would you like to request this
feature be added? Thank you.

[Bug 386888] [NEW] Cannot make multiple copies of CDs/DVDs

Brasero is missing the basic functionality to make multiple copies of

Re: [Bug 386888] Re: Cannot make multiple copies of CDs/DVDs

2009-06-15 Thread Jeff Long
Hi Pedro, no i do not get errors. What i want to do is tell the program to
make exactly 35 copies or exactly 175 copies. On most programs you can
select the # of copies to make before selecting to burn the disc or image.
On my Mac I use Toast which allows me to do this. It is very useful
especially when making many copies of say 12 different original discs.

Thanks and hope this helps clarify

Status in “brasero” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
Brasero is missing the basic functionality to make multiple copies of the
same CD or DVD. There is anoter bug related to this -- however, it's from
 2007.

 I'm running Jaunty.

If it was fixed in a previous release, why isn't it fixed in this new,
 supposedly better one?

Is there any way to add this basic feature to disc copying? Quite frankly
 I'm stunned...

[Bug 391398] [NEW] Applications segfault with gtk+ version 2.17.2 when selecting listbox values

2009-06-23 Thread Jeff Greene
Public bug reported:

Description:
After updating gtk+2.0 from version 2.17.0 to 2.17.2 on Ubuntu Karmic Koala,
gtk+ applications crash from a segfault caused by something in the
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.1702.0 file.

Applications Affected:
evince
transmission
nautilus
Other gtk+ applications that call this file.

How to Recreate crash:
Open up an application (such as transmission) and go to a listbox and scroll
with the mouse wheel (sometimes clicking will also crash it).

Note:
When launching affected programs from terminal, this message appears:
Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_sortable_set_sort_column_id: assertion
`GTK_IS_TREE_SORTABLE (sortable)' failed

Output from dmesg after crash:

Looking at the /proc//fd, it seems that all opened /dev/pts/xxx and
/dev/ptmx are left unclosed when an terminal window/tab is closed.

what I get from /proc//fd is hundreds of opened fd

Reverting to gnome-system-tools 2.30.0-0ubuntu2 (from Lucid) does make a
difference. I also needed to install liboobs-1-4 2.30.0-0ubuntu1.

It eventually works, but outputs this warning:
(users-admin:3551): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error
communicating asynchronously with the backends: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.

That may be unrelated, however.

[Bug 643153] Re: maverick - 'user settings' hangs being root

2010-10-26 Thread Jeff Ebert
Milan, I was talking about running gksu users-admin rather than
logging into a session as root. It is not obvious why that use-case
would not be supported.

At least one other user is seeing the same:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1585421

In addition, when I run users-admin with a normal user account, nothing
happens when I click on the Add, Delete, and Advanced Settings buttons.

What I mean is that it is the *primary* normal user account that I
created during installation. This seems like a clear regression from
Lucid, and I would like some help debugging it.

[Bug 668901] [NEW] users-admin cannot get authorized from policy kit in VNC session

2010-10-30 Thread Jeff Ebert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

This problem appears to be new in Maverick.

Steps:
1. Run users-admin from within a VNC session using my primary user account that
is in the admin group.
2. Click on any button that requires authorization by policykit, such as Add,
Delete, or Advanced Settings.
3. Nothing happens, even after waiting for several minutes. No authentication
window or error window ever shows up.

I have tried a number of the debugging steps listed in other bugs, and I
have tried the workaround listed in 221363. The patch provided for
Karmic or newer is out of date, but I tried a few different variants
of it and none seemed to do any good.

I would be happy to help debug this problem, so at least we can find a
new workaround for Maverick.

[Bug 668901] Re: users-admin cannot get authorized from policy kit in VNC session

2010-11-05 Thread Jeff Ebert
I installed Maverick desktop edition in a VM using the ISO image.

After installation, I installed only vnc4server and ssh. I logged in
remotely and started the VNC session. I confirmed that users-admin does
not get an authorization from policy kit. No window appears that says
that it cannot get authorization. (I think that is a regression from
Lucid, by itself.)

Then, I edited the
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends.policy
file manually, as you described. Rather than try to figure out what
tools needed to be restarted, I rebooted after each change to this file.
This is very fast in a VM on my box, so I figured it would be good to
eliminate all variables. In this first edit, I only changed allow_active
to allow_any in both sections of the file and deleted the allow_inactive
lines. After doing so, I was able to get authorized in users-admin
running in the VNC session. I was not able to get authorized in users-
admin running in a local GDM session however.

Next, I edited the policy file manually again, adding back the original
allow_active lines. Again, I rebooted. At this point, I was able to
get authorized in users-admin in both the VNC session and the local GDM
session. Great news!

Finally, I upgraded to the latest packages with apt-get update apt-
get upgrade. I changed nothing in /etc/apt, either manually or using
the Software Sources GUI. After all of the packages had been
downloaded and installed, I rebooted again. In this final state, I can
no longer get authorization in users-admin running in the VNC session.
It still works in the local GDM session however. The policy file has not
been modified or overwritten by the upgrade process.

2010-11-06 Thread Jeff Ebert
Please look again at the process listing in #10. It is running, and I
checked that it is in fact a child of gnome-session. The only gnome-
session running on this machine is the one started by VNC. So, why is
policy kit unable to find this authentication agent? This is the same
issue that I keep seeing. What's the next step?

[Bug 672733] [NEW] Automatic Mark as Read fails if the first message presented on folder opening is new.

2010-11-08 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This may be a bit difficult to explain...

In Evolution, I currently have it configured to mark a new message as
read 0.5 seconds after I open the message. So, for example, I open my
inbox folder and there are 50 messages total and 5 marked Unread. I
click on one of the 5 Unread messages and open it. Evolution then marks
that message as read about 0.5 seconds after I open the message and
start reading it.

When I open a folder, evolution opens up a message automatically. IN
some cases, this is the last message read, in some cases, it's the first
unread message. The bug exists when the second case is met. When I
open a folder and evolution automatically opens an Unread message, that
unread message is NOT automatically marked read. Instead, I have to
open a different message and then return to that message to have it
marked Read.

This becomes an even bigger issue when I open a folder that contains
exactly ONE message. if I purge the contents of a folder, then get a
new message in that folder, I have to use contextual menus to mark the
message read, as there is NO way to have it handled by evolution in a
automatic method.

For example, please look at the screenshot I have attached.

You'll see my folder for mail from the Laptop Testing Team mailing list
at ubuntu.com. I recently purged that folder of all old messages. Then
I recieved a new message from that list which was filtered into the
folder for Laptop Testing Team.

When I open that folder, the message is opened, however, it is NOT
marked as read. Since there is nothing else in that folder, I can't use
the workaround of clicking on a different message then clicking back on
that message. Thus, the only way to mark the folder as read is to now
use context menus on the folder itself.

Be that as it may, the automatic marking is broken in the instances
mentioned above, though there are ways to work around it.

[Bug 675731] [NEW] Evolution crashes (but leaves no core dump and does not trigger apport) randomly

2010-11-15 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Another bit of Evolution fun...

I've noticed that since upgrading to 10.10, Evolution crashes randomly.
Some times it's opening a folder, sometimes when clicking on Send on a
new message, sometimes when marking a message as read.

In the latter example, I saw today, Evolution would crash EVERY time I
clicked the Read/Unread icon next to a message in one of my folders.

I finally thought I'd try running strace and seeing if I could capture
the system calls made at the time of the crash, however, when run
through systrace, the crash did NOT occur, even though without strace,
the crash occurred 5 out of 5 times when attempting to mark that message
unread.

So at a first guess, I am thinking that maybe there's some sort of race
condition going on that strace is mitigating.

I also attempted this before when evolution kept crashing while clicking
Send on new messages (still does this too) and so I ran evolution for
several hours through strace and never managed to get a crash. I DID,
however, end up with a 40GB log file from strace :(

I will look at running evolution through valgrind too and see if I can
catch anything, but I'm not hopeful that this will be any different than
when running via strace.
