The above Bluetooth speaker paired and started streaming audio
perfectly in Kubuntu 17.04. But the audio quality was poor, because
the default audio profile was the low-quality HSP/HFP one. When I
switched it to the A2DP profile, it sounded perfect again.

Can we make A2DP the default playback profile for Bluetooth audio

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738593] [NEW] disks should synchronize with fstab

2017-12-16 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

When gnome-disk-utility formats a disk it assigns a new UUID.
UUID is the preferred way to identify disks in fstab.
Problem is that gnome-disk-utility does *not* update fstab.
As a consequence the system will not boot & newbies will be stumped. (I was
for two days).
Therefore gnome-disk-utility must check fstab and if appropriate
not assign a new UID
or
update fstab
or
alert the user to update fstab.

And, yes, this is a bug, albeit a bug in the design, but still a bug.

Title:
Regression, poor user experience, print dialogs garbled by
  unidentifiable driverless printers

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Recently, my print dialogs have started to include network discoverd
printers in addition to those configured in cups even if the cups-
browsed service is disabled and the BrowseRemoteProtocols option is
  set to none.

There does not seem to be any way to disable this behavior apart from
disabling avahi or its ability to talk to dbus, which causes side
  effects on the system.

Yet, in some environments this behavior is a definite regression over
the old one and leads to an extremely poor user experience.

  On some networks:

  - The print dialogs takes 3-10 sec to open which is a huge amount of
time for an action that is expected to be instantaneous and for which
  there is no visual feedback.

  - The print dialog contains many tens of printer entries, all
identified by weird hex strings that cannot be related to any useful
location, that do not help identifying which entry corresponds to
which printer and that only mess up the list making it hard to find
the printers that are actually useful.

For instance, suppose that you work at some office that has recently
purchased a batch of new printers all the same model. In the print
dialog you may get many entries like:

  HP_Laserjet_Pro_Mxxxdw_21ACF2

which only vary in the final hex string. How is one suppose to know
  what is where?

Please make it possible to disable this driverless printer madness.

Bug description:
After upgrading to 16.04 desktop (unity) (clean install) from 14.04,
(so not really upgrading, but you get the point) I noticed that
lightdm with unity-greeter (all stock, nothing changed) can't connect
  to WiFi with network-manager.

WiFi works after loggin it, but it should be working before also, if
not, what's the point in having an icon there :)

I get the following message: Failed to add/activate connection. - (1)
Insufficient privileges. - see image.
  This worked fine in 14.04.

I have noticed this problem in both my desktop (Broadcom WiFi) and
Laptop (Intel WiFi) - So it has nothing to be with the chip.

Feel free to ask for more info.

  -original text of bug--

I have had no sound since original (fairly recent) purchase. I
  purchased online from Dell.

Sound preferences were originally showing in upper right hand corner
of the screen, but the sliders for changing volume were grayed out,
and choosing sound test had no audible or visual result.

Now sound preferences are not showing in upper right corner at all,
and system preferences --> sound no longer shows 'sound test' as an
  option.

I tried to fix original problem myself by killing then re-starting pulseaudio
No effect. Also I tried commands

  apt-get purge pulseaudio
  and then later
  apt-get install pulseaudio

it seemed to be after that when the sound preferences stopped showing
in upper right corner, but I also did a general ubuntu update at the
same time (and there is still a restart required for update for
  'Latitude E5X60 System Update' 68614)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738581] [NEW] apport is leaking environment variables (including passwords!) to public bug reports

2017-12-16 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

See the bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/1738564
created with ubuntu-bug.

Apport includes the file JournalErrors.txt
This file includes e.g. the following line.
Dez 16 19:11:31 hostname /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[9679]:
dbus-update-activation-environment: setting
MPD_HOST=...@.xxx.org

Normally it would be not problem that gdm-x-session write this to the journal,
because the journal is not intended to be published on the internet.

Setting confidential informations via environment is maybe not the best
idea, but a legal procedure and for `mpc` the only way to set this
information.

IMHO the apport utility is here the problem, because it includes the
file with risky information to a public visible bug report.

Note: I manually delete the attachment in the mentioned bug report. But how can
I sure that a web crawlser hasn't read/preserved that attachment?

2017-12-16 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
On some machines I'm using a 'no change backport' from artfull:
 3.26.2-1~ubuntu16.04.1~c42.ppa1 from ppa:dirk-computer42/c42-backport-gnome3

The problem isn't related to this version - so it seems for me to be
solved (or hidden) in a newer version.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1720725] Re: Enable multiarch in libsndfile1-dev

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
  Enable multiarch in libsndfile1-dev

Status in libsndfile package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Release: Artful Aardvark 17.10
  Package version: 1.0.28-4

The current version of libsndfile1-dev is not able to be marked Multi-
Arch: same, because the examples it provides includes an autoheader
(?) generated config.h file, which has architecture-specific defines
like SIZEOF_INT. However, as far as I can tell, this header, as well
as common.h and sfconfig.h aren't actually used in any of the
examples, despite being included sometimes. So if they were removed,
it should be possible to mark the dev package as Multi-Arch: same. I
was able to install both amd64 and i386 versions of libsndfile1-dev
  after removing the examples.

For a more long-term solution, the header includes in
debian/libsndfile1-dev.examples can probably be removed once those
extra includes are removed. A change on the github repo for libsndfile
was recently merged to get rid of the extra includes, as it's also
probably a bad idea to (unnecessarily) include internal header files
  in example code.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731792] Re: Can't install libsndfile1-dev on Ubuntu 16.04.2 x86_64

2017-12-16 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu
better.

I tried to reproduce this issue on Ubuntu 16.04, but was able to install
libsndfile1-dev without similar issues. It might be that apt tried to
install an older version of the -dev package which caused a version
mismatch with libsndfile1. Could you please run `sudo apt update` to
update the package list and see if that solves the problem. If the issue
persits, could you add the output from `apt policy libsndfile1-dev` to
see which version of the dev package it tries to install?

Btw, when reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1724439] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in meta_window_get_monitor() from ffi_call_unix64() from ffi_call() from gjs_invoke_c_function() from function_call()

2017-12-16 Thread Brian Neltner
This bug is coming up every single time I turn on my monitor. I play
sound with the monitor off, and sound plays up until the moment I turn
on the monitor, after which libmutter causes gnome-shell to crash. dmesg
and crash log timing coincides exactly with monitor turn on time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738528] [NEW] Sound applet reflects volume of different device when bluetooth device auto-connects

2017-12-16 Thread Iván Pérez
Public bug reported:

As currently set up in Ubuntu 16.04, when an audio device connects via
bluetooth, it starts being used by programs automatically. However, the
sound applet still "points to" the previously selected audio output.
Therefore, changing the volume has no immediate audible effect.

The way to change that, currently, is to go to Sound settings, select
the bluetooth device as current output (again?), and then the volume
will change.

I would expect that, when a bluetooth device is connected, it starts
being used, *and* changing the volume immediately will affect the
bluetooth device.

I googled a bit, and people have suggested [1] that the file
/etc/pulse/default.pa should contain load-module module-switch-on-
connect before the volume is restored. My installation does not have
that line, but it does have:

### Should be after module-*-restore but before module-*-detect
load-module module-switch-on-port-available

According to [1], maybe this should be listed in that file *before* the
aforementioned module-*-restore lines.
