[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1728012] Re: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change

Bug definitely affects me with Epson Perfection V330 Photo. I can
confirm that the workaround in #36 makes the scanner usable again.

Many scanners can no more be used since sane has changed something:
The 3rd-party plug-in the vendor provides as .deb package will still
install. But the scanner is no more recognized.

   - Epson Perfection V10
   - Epson Perfection V1000
   - Epson WorkForce GT-1500
   - Brother MFC-8510DN

It is to note that the probability that the scanner manufacturers fix
things others broke is below 100%.

Doing sudo apt stuff is so not my thing, as I do not know how to do or
where do such stuff.

Thankyou though very much for your advice, and everything is ok now as I
was using a

16.10 system and it got updated to 17.10 system, I think, and firefox 57
was part of the

upgrade. So thanks again, and have amazing new year and many many more.

  nautilus stops responding, Desktop too

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This happens randomly every once in a while:

  - Clicking on Nautilus' Launcher icon does nothing (it blinks for a while as
if it was loading, then no window opens).
  - Desktop icons (icons of files and folders in the Desktop) don't respond to
clicks or right-clicks
  - running nautilus from a terminal will not print any error message, won't
open any nautilus window, but it will not exit either, just wait forever

Deficiency: Files Command – "New Folder" option not always available

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
This issue may not be actually be a “bug” since it is possible this is
working as the developer intended. If this is in fact the case AND
assuming that I am not missing something, I consider this to be a
deficiency which should be addressed, if not as a bug fix, at least as
  a near-term enhancement.

The issue – if the right panel of the Files window is completely filled
(top-to-bottom) with folders/files
there is no “empty space” in this pane. As such, it is not possible to
right-click to bring a menu which includes an option to create a “New Folder”.
(This option is available if there is any “empty space” in the pane.) Seeing
this, it was not at all intuitive as how to create a new folder in this
scenario.

I thought that perhaps the “New Folder” option might be available if I
clicked on the icon in the very upper left corner of the Files window
  – but it is not there either. After doing some experimentation with
keyboard shortcuts, I found that I could get a “New Folder” popup by
doing “Ctrl+Shift+N”. Incidentally, clicking on the small icon in
the upper left corner of the Files window, the “Keyboard Shortcuts”
popup does not include the “Ctrl+Shift+N” in the help text for the
  shortcuts.

Ok, thanks. I asked because some corrections were made before the
release of 17.10, which ought to make sure that if you install 17.10
with e.g. the British locale, all the British language support packages
are installed.

But the more general issue, as described in bug #1294858, is still
present.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 886449] Re: [USB-Audio - USB Camera-B4.04.27.1 (playstation eye), recording] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2017-12-30 Thread WhyteHorse
This bug still affects Debian alsa so maybe it should be merged into the
main alsa. It was a problem until there was a kernel update and now the
mic "just works" on newer kernels but the speaker is not working.
alsamixer does see the card and when you select it you get "cannot load
mixer controls: Invalid argument". apaly doesn't see it for some reason:

 $ aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA], device 0: bcm2835 ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA]

  Subdevices: 1/1

However, arecord does see it:

$ arecord -l

card 1: CameraB409241 [USB Camera-B4.09.24.1], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1

This bug affects me currently and I have heard other people were able to
workaround it with a file ~/.asoundrc but I have tried all of those and can't
get any to work.

Bug description:
gnome-python and pyorbit will be removed from Debian Testing soon (I
estimate early January) because it is an old GNOME2 library that
hasn't been maintained in years. It will take some time for those
packages to be removed from Debian Unstable, but I don't think we
should ship gnome-python in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

I am filing this bug now in particular to provide early notice for the
Ubuntu-specific packages firmware-tools and gnome-activity-journal. Both of
those projects were abandoned upstream years ago.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1732222] Re: Language support not installed matching locale

2017-12-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
There is indeed an inconsistency between the installer and language-
selector in this respect. The issue is reported in bug #1294858. That
bug report is a bit 'noisy', but in comment #3 you find my idea for a
solution and the reasons for it.

So even if this bug may be considered a duplicate, let's keep it for now
as a reminder. After all the issue is closely related to the behavior of
language-selector.

  language options (see screenshot attached).

When this language support is installed, these applications then
(correctly) display menus etc in UK English.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1733127] Re: Session crashes when monitor is disconnected

2017-12-30 Thread Michael Coote
My session doesn't actually terminate when the monitor is switched off,
but when power is cycled; switch HDMI monitor off --> can still hear
application playing audio --> switch monitor on --> all applications
terminate and logged off.

Title:
Session crashes when monitor is disconnected

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The user session crashes when I disconnect the DVI cable from my
computer (which I do to connect another monitor instead). A similar
problem is described in two recent questions on AskUbuntu:

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/969376/how-to-keep-graphical-session-
  running-in-17-10-when-external-screen-is-turned-of

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/969510/ubuntu-17-10-logs-out-when-
  monitor-is-detached

I could not find a related bug report to subscribe to so here I am. I
would except the session to be available as if nothing had happened
when I reconnect the screen, or at most that the session is locked
  (but still running).

These are the system logs from when I tested it twice, at 00:26:50 and
at 00:28:30. (I'm not sure if the rfkill message is related.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1740599] [NEW] Selecting multiple files and dragging them to file manager is broken

2017-12-30 Thread Greg Parker
Public bug reported:

This issue is reproducible every time I try.

- Start with two or more files on the desktop
- Drag out a selection area around the files to select them
- Open "Files" file manager
- Drag and drop them to a folder

The drag and drop operation fails and the cursor gets stuck as a hand
icon. Signing out is the only way I have tried to fix the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2017-12-30 Thread Tim Richardson
gdm3 and nvidia binary drivers don't work together yet. Maybe 18.04 although
there's not much evidence that anyone who knows how to fix this problem is
working on it.
This problem has emerged since the default Ubuntu session now uses gdm3 (as of
17.10) but standard gnome users on all recent distribution have the same
problem.

The best solution is to replace gdm3 with lightdm. (sudo apt install lightdm)
You can install both display managers and swap between them with

dpkg-reconfigure lightdm (or dpkg-reconfigure gdm3)
and obviously choose lightdm

You don't seem to lose anything by using lightdm instead of gdm3.

  [Impact]

  *** hwe-16.04 refresh for 16.04.4 ***

A minor update, only some driver updates plus a newer Mesa.

Mesa needs llvm-toolchain-5.0 and libclc, libdrm, wayland-protocols
  updates.

  [Test case]

upgrade from/to stock & old hwe stack, test desktop usage

  [Regression potential]

  libdrm:
Slim to none, changes from 2.4.76 to 2.4.83
  - amdgpu: pci-id handling moved here, new pci-ids, bugfixes, tests
  - intel: new pci-ids
  - drm: leak fixes, manpage updates
  - exynos, etnaviv, freedreno, android: fixes, new stuff

  wayland-protocols:
None, just adds a few protocol definitions (xml files)

  llvm-toolchain-5.0:
  None, a new package

  libclc:
I'd say none, very little has changed, added support for llvm-5 is the main
reason for this slightly newer snapshot

  xorg-server:
Slim, it's an upstream bugfix release, changes from 1.19.3 to 1.19.5 include:
  - security fixes
  - backported bugfixes to glamor, modesetting driver, xwayland etc

  mesa:
New major release plus a few bugfix updates after that. Regressions at this
point are less likely. Upstream is tested by Intel CI system for instance. And
we're already testing it via a ppa on OEM systems for 16.04.4. Tracking bug for
the bugfix release (xenial & artful) is bug 1727390

  [Other information]

build order: [libdrm, wayland-protocols, llvm-toolchain-5.0], [libclc,
  xorg-server], mesa

I'm also affected by this, running a laptop with intel i5-6300HQ, and
GTX 950M. GDM3 won't work at all, but switching to lightDM and Xorg only
seems to have solved it temporarily. I'm using nvidia-384 with a
4.13.10-* kernel.

Here's a question with slightly more details:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1711337] Re: Firefox crashes at start on armv7L after 55.0.1 update

That fix was:

?

According to
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/351233449/buildlog_ubuntu-xenial-armhf.firefox_57.0.3+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1_BUILDING.txt.gz
 it's building with:
> --enable-optimize=-g -O2 -fno-schedule-insns

So it looks like the fix was indeed ported, but given the word
"hopefully", but was it ever confirmed?

Just like Adam Smith with version 55, arm64 appears to be fine. And just
like herrtimson with version 55, even armv7 works on Arch Linux but
still crashes on Debian/Ubuntu:

Title:
Firefox crashes at start on armv7L after 55.0.1 update

Status in Mozilla Firefox:
  Confirmed
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Firefox always crashes when launched after the 55.0.1 update on an
Orange Pi PC Plus (a single-board computer similar to a Raspberry Pi),
  even in safe mode.

I did a fresh install of Armbian (a Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 re-spin for
ARM single-board computer) on a similar board (Orange Pi Plus 2e),
installed Firefox and experienced the same problem--it won't load
  without crashing.
