[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1716857] Re: nvidia-drm.modeset=1, gdm3 and optimus laptop results in no external monitors detected by Xorg
Hi, thanks to everyone, especially Daniel for unpacking this issue. I have had a very similar issue, where gnome shell fails to run my external 4K/UHD display at 60HZ and I see the following failure loop triggered in `journalctl -b -p warning _COMM=gnome-shell`: May 02 20:39:38 JNBA434499PLL gnome-shell[1957]: Failed to blit shared framebuffer: EGL failed to allocate resources for the requested operation. While not sure it's exactly the same, it should still inform the overall discussion about dealing with GDM3 + Mutter + proprietary Nvidia drivers modeset problems. To summarise and share my experience of it on a Lenovo P53 and some quirks/workarounds: - `sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall` got Nvidia 440.59 drivers installed. - However, Nvidia modeset was not enabled as yet. $ sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset N - - Using prime-select - For laptops like mine, seems the external port is connected to the Nvidia GPU. - Using the proprietary Nvidia drivers seems to then bump into a ** Attachment added: "gnome-shell_journal_warnings_egl_resource_failed.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1716857/+attachment/5365716/+files/gnome-shell_journal_warnings_egl_resource_failed.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-430 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1716857 Title: nvidia-drm.modeset=1, gdm3 and optimus laptop results in no external monitors detected by Xorg Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu: Opinion Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-375 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-418 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-430 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-435 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Context: 17.10 development packages, nvidia binary driver 375, modeset=1 for the nvidia driver. ubuntu desktop (gnome shell), fresh install ThinkPad W520 in Nvidia Optimus bios mode. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04
I see this happening very frequently with screenshots...they seem to get lost. E.g: I use Ctrl+Prt Sc to get a screenshot of my entire display into my clipboard, and moments later I cannot paste it into Discord because somehow it got 'lost'. It takes several tries before the screenshot can finally be pasted into Discord. Also, one other thing I have noticed is that while taking the screenshot, if I can hear the screenshot 'click' sound, it will almost certainly fail, whereas if I don't hear the 'click' sound, it copies it successfully into the clipboard. I have seen this happening on Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 (currently on 20.04, seems worse than on 19.10) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1852183 Title: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 Status in LibreOffice: Won't Fix Status in Mutter: Unknown Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Fix Committed Status in mutter source package in Eoan: Triaged Status in mutter source package in Focal: Fix Committed Bug description: I'm running LibreOffice 6.3.2.2 on Ubuntu 19.10. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1875326] Re: Can't double click items in icon view
It seems that on clicking an item the focus is temporarily set to a different item further up the page before setting it to the selected item. This can cause the page to scroll up to display the temporarily focused item before scrolling down to show the selected item. Hence the jump. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1875326 Title: Can't double click items in icon view Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Ubuntu: 20.04LTS Nautilus: 1:3.36.1.1-1ubuntu2 Double clicking an item in Nautilus should open the item but this doesn't happen in all cases because the display is scrolled. When items are displayed in icon view (as opposed to list view) and there are more items than can be displayed in the window, clicking an item can cause the display to scroll so that the item is no longer under the cursor and so double-clicking is impossible. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1876534] Re: ThinkPad P72 - Very serious issues with external monitors on Thunderbolt dock
** Description changed: I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on a ThinkPad P72 with a Quadro P5200. I recently purchased the ThinkPad Workstation Dock Gen2 and have been having issues with external displays on it. There are a multitude of issues with this. Sometimes you can plug in displays and both will show up fine after running xrandr --auto. Sometimes only one will appear and the other will stay black. There is a chance for any of these things to happen after making a display configuration change: - Nothing (displays work fine) - One display stays black - All displays including laptop internal display freeze, which is recoverable only by physically disconnecting the displays from the dock - Displays flicker on and off rapidly before every one goes dark including the laptop's internal display, requiring a hard reset. I have tried: - Upgrading to a newer kernel version (5.6.7) via mainline - Upgrading all system firmware, including dock, to latest via Lenovo Vantage in Windows dual boot - Downgrading the dock firmware from 3166 to 3164 - despite suggestions by people in this thread in the Lenovo community https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Ubuntu/Thinkpad-P1-Gen2-amp-Thunderbolt-3-Workstation-Dock-amp-Linux-Ubuntu-Monitor-s-black/m-p/4575709?page=3 - this did not work - Downgrading the NVIDIA driver version to both 435 and 390 - neither worked + Downgrading to an older kernel (4.19) appears to work, but it still has + some issues with locking up while repositioning displays using xrandr. + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 Package: xorg 1:7.7+19ubuntu14 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-28.32-generic 5.4.30 Uname: Linux 5.4.0-28-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: zfs zunicode zavl icp zcommon znvpair nvidia_modeset nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.gpus..01.00.0: Error: [Errno 21] Is a directory: '/proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/:01:00.0' .proc.driver.nvidia.registry: Binary: "" .proc.driver.nvidia.suspend: suspend hibernate resume .proc.driver.nvidia.suspend_depth: default modeset uvm .proc.driver.nvidia.version: - NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 440.64 Fri Feb 21 01:17:26 UTC 2020 - GCC version: gcc version 9.3.0 (Ubuntu 9.3.0-10ubuntu2) + NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 440.64 Fri Feb 21 01:17:26 UTC 2020 + GCC version: gcc version 9.3.0 (Ubuntu 9.3.0-10ubuntu2) ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: None Date: Sun May 3 00:37:27 2020 DistUpgraded: 2020-03-04 19:48:20,592 DEBUG Running PostInstallScript: './xorg_fix_proprietary.py' DistroCodename: focal DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: - acpi-call, 1.1.0, 5.4.0-28-generic, x86_64: installed - nvidia, 440.64, 5.4.0-28-generic, x86_64: installed - v4l2loopback, 0.12.3, 5.4.0-28-generic, x86_64: installed - wireguard, 1.0.20200413, 5.4.0-28-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1876532] Re: Badly positioned icons in the app grid
Correction: It's not about where the cursor is placed when the animation ends, it's about whether the cursor is moving or not. Keep the cursor still, as I said previously, and the bug doesn't happen. Keep the cursor moving while the sliding animation is running, and the problem is nearly always reproducible. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1876532 Title: Badly positioned icons in the app grid Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: This bug is best explained with images. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1765363] Re: prime-select intel is not powering off the nvidia card
I confirm the issue on Ubuntu 18.04 base with kernel 4.15.0-88, NVidia drivers 435.21 and 440.59 make no difference in the behavior. After 'prime-select intel' the nvidia driver is not loaded at all and intel graphcs are active, but according to PowerTop the NVIDIA chip still consumes the power. Acer laptop, NVidia 1050 Ti, Intel i5-7300HQ. (TLDR: see SOLUTION at the end of the comment!) Good thing is: as reported in comment #61 above by Vincente, command from PowerTop Tunables tab (Runtime PM for PCI device NVIDIA Corporation GP107M) actually helps to power off the NVidia chip and power consumption goes down by a ~10W. Unfortunately, that does not persist after system restart. After checking the relevant NVidia driver manual http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/440.59/README/dynamicpowermanagement.html I have found that same command to enable the runtime power management which PowerTop uses: echo auto > /sys/bus/pci/devices/\:01\:00.0/power/control or a variant with proper privileges: sudo sh -c 'echo auto > /sys/bus/pci/devices/:01:00.0/power/control' That does the trick as well, so PowerTop is not needed to enable it. GREAT THING AND THE SOLUTION: after reading the 'Automated Setup' section in the nvidia manual above, I have found a way to automate that. No bbswitch, no tlp tools, no extra scripts/services! Just create a file named 80-nvidia-poweroff.rules in /lib/udev/rules.d/ directory with the following content: # Enable runtime PM for NVIDIA VGA/3D controller devices by default (if the driver is not / will not be bound) ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="pci", ATTR{vendor}=="0x10de", ATTR{class}=="0x03", DRIVER=="", TEST=="power/control", ATTR{power/control}="auto" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="pci", ATTR{vendor}=="0x10de", ATTR{class}=="0x030200", DRIVER=="", TEST=="power/control", ATTR{power/control}="auto" Save and reboot the system. Done! The nvidia chip will be in power off mode already when you open the PowerTop to check that. And that will work only when the intel is selected as an active controller by prime- select tool, so should be safe when nvidia is set as active instead. P.S. I wish this to be done automatically when installing the nvidia driver... No magic for installer to create that file. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-prime in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1765363 Title: prime-select intel is not powering off the nvidia card Status in nvidia-prime package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Right now, it seems that prime-select intel makes sure the nvidia driver is not loaded, as nvidia-settings reports. But my power consumption is > 20W. cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch reports the card is still on. If bbswitch and powertop are reliable, then the nvidia card is still powered. For me in 20.04, bug is definitely still present. I have earlyoom active, and 32 gb a few seconds of "freeze" (which is not really a freeze) earlyoom activates and nukes a few things, including Firefox, which brings back interactive response. It also killed Chrome and Remmina, which was irritating, but that's what earlyoom is there to do; better than minutes of no keyboard response. Running: * NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce GTS 250] (rev a2) * Gigabyte P55A-UD4 * Intel Core i7 860 * 2x DELL U2413 1920x1200 * One connected via DVI in landscape * Detected as #2 * Positioned on the left * Configured to be screen with dock/launcher * One connected via HDMI in portrait * Detected as 1 * Positioned on the right Upon logging into my normal gnome session, the right display (detected as display 1) was no longer rotated to portrait orientation. Attempting to do this through the normal Gnome settings panel appears to disable monitor 1 which I want to rotate, and increase the virtual desktop size on monitor 2. Without rotation, both monitors are functioning.
