disappears from the top panel.

  disappearing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-09-27 Thread Dimitar Kotsev
@Coiby Xu, @wangjun, Helmut (schinfo) thank you for saving the day.

I've `git cloned` 5.8.12-3 Manjaro kernel from GitLab and using this
post I installed it on my system. -> https://forum.manjaro.org/t/how-to-
compile-patch-kernel-with-custom-alsa-driver/20326/4

Everything works like a charm now.

Thank you all once again.

  Hello

The MSFT touchpad of this Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05 laptop is not reacting at
all (pointer and click never move when touchpad is touched). This has been
reported by other users in various websites, with various linux systems
including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.
Example of websites covering the issue :

the same laptop)
  - https://www.linux.org/threads/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad.29536/ (similar

Some background: was able to use a similar command for years. Then recently
when chromium was packed into a snap, I had to move my user directory inside
the ~/snap/ folder or it wouldn't launch. After the latest update, I can't
launch chromium at all.

  Please advice. Thank you.

According to the Unicode standard since at least version 3.0, chapter

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1872053] Re: Local mail is never checked

2020-09-27 Thread Karl N. Redman
I'm just piping in here to say that the issue is based on how the
login(1) program is called during the authorization process. This is
beyond the scope of gui terminals and is even once more removed from the
shell.

I've outlined a more in depth answer here:
https://askubuntu.com/a/1278257/879293

Also, I've provided a bash function that you can add to your .profile
(assuming you use 'login shell' for your terminals) that will give you
something like the behavior that you (and me as well) were seeking
relative to this thread.

Best regards.

  Local mail is never checked

  Description: Ubuntu 19.10
  Release: 19.10
  gnome-terminal:
    Installed: 3.34.2-1ubuntu1
    Candidate: 3.34.2-1ubuntu1

Context : In a typical daily use scenario, a Ubuntu user is not expected to
use a console login with "Ctrl-Alt Fx".
Instead it is expected to use gnome-terminal for command-line interaction.
  That being said :

What I expect to happen when I launch gnome-terminal :
I expect the bash shell started by gnome-terminal to check local mail (in
/var/mail/$USER ) and reports accordingly "You have new mail" if there is new
mail.

  What happens instead :
gnome-terminal invokes bash with $MAIL variable not set. So mail is not
checked, and the user is never informed about new local mail.

  Workaround :
  Put
  export MAIL=/var/mail/$USER
  in ~/.bashrc

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1891632] Re: The network manager does not check the NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_WAKE_ON_WLAN_IGNORE bit

Status in OEM Priority Project focal series:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

In some cases, the wow is not configured and the
NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_WAKE_ON_WLAN_IGNORE is set (for to disable
  management of wake-on-LAN in NetworkManager).

The network manager only checks the NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_WAKE_ON_WLAN_NONE
bit.
But, the NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_WAKE_ON_WLAN_IGNORE does not be check.
So, the management of wake-on-LAN still is done by NetworkManager.

The killer 500s Wi-Fi does not want the network-manger to manager the
wake-on-LAN so the NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_WAKE_ON_WLAN_IGNORE is set.
(The driver will manager itself.) When the network-manager managers
the wake-on-LAN, all of the Wi-Fi functions will be lost after the OS
  resumed from suspend.

  [Test Case]

On a machine with killer 500s Wi-Fi and install the Qualcomm's driver.
   Step 1. Enter suspend (s2idle)
   Setp 2. Resume from suspend

After resume from suspend, the Wi-Fi function still is normal.

You can download the kernel and linux-firmware that backport the Qucalcomm's
dirver fro focal from below link:
   https://launchpad.net/~vicamo/+archive/ubuntu/ppa-1879633

  [Regression Potential]

   * This patch modifies the wake on lan parameters, please test that
the corresponding feature still works fine with the different
  configuration values.

  [Other Info]

   * None

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1866194] Re: External audio device shows up in the sound output options but the sound keeps being emitted from the internal laptop speaker, or none at all.

2020-09-27 Thread Sujit Kumar
I enabled focal-proposed updates and upgraded 119 packages and installed
5 new ones. So far I can't see any major bugs that breaks my system so
that's good, however the pulseaudio bug isn't fixed for me.

Unpacking pulseaudio (1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.7) over
(1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.6)

This was a line while upgrading in terminal, so pulseaudio is in
1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.7

When I turn on headset, it says "Connected" and my laptop says it's
connected in Bluetooth settings, but the audio still comes out of the
laptop speakers, I have to disconnect and reconnect the headset from
settings to get the audio to go to it. This was the bug I faced before
as well.

Start with an older version of Ubuntu like 19.04 or 19.10 and upgrade

device and use it via Settings.

  [Regression Potential]

Unknown/low. The fix is from upstream and has already been released to
Ubuntu 20.10 without any problems. Only worth noting it works by
detecting and removing audio configurations made via older versions of
PulseAudio. So upon upgrading some old settings may be reset to
defaults, but the idea is that's less bad than audio devices being
  unusable (this bug).

  Kernel version: 5.4.0-14-generic #17-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb 6 22:47:59 UTC 2020
  Pulseaudio: 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu1
  Device CID: 201704-25503

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Connect an audio interface. I tried with BT headphones and speakers as
well as a USB microphone/output.
  2. Make sure it's the one selected as "Output device"
  3. Click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (NOK)
  4. Select "Speakers - Built-in Audio" as Output device and click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (OK)
  5. Try to switch back to the BT device and click Test
-> same result as in step 3

Tested with 2 different BT devices (one headset and one speaker) as
well as a USB audio interface (Zoom H2N microphone).

Attached are btmon logs captured during the procedure described above,
and pactl logs capture after step 7.

I was previously using 19.04 and 19.10 on this device and never
  experienced this kind of issue.

Up to this morning, it was harder to connect the BT device, but once
connected, the sound would output on it as expected. Now, the BT
connection seems to work better, but I can't output the sound to the
  BT device...

I tried to reboot the device, and also to suspend/resume, but in each
case, the BT device can connect back, but the sound is still output
from the internal laptop speakers, even when the BT device is selected
  in the Sound settings.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1896397] Re: [UIFe] Tweak Arabic font

2020-09-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package language-selector - 0.211

- Change back to "Noto Sans Arabic UI" for sans-serif instead of
  "Noto Naskh Arabic UI"

Title:
  [UIFe] Tweak Arabic font

Status in language-selector package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in language-selector source package in Focal:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]

This is a follow-up of bug #1891733. After the new default font for
Arabic had made it to focal, we got some additional feedback at
  . After further discussion,
trial and error, and multiple changes in groovy it has landed in a
  consensus to make these adjustments:

  * Rename the .conf file from 69- to 56-

  * Drop binding="strong"

  * Drop the specification for monospace, and with that fall back
to DejaVu for Arabic monospace

The significance of the changes, which motivates the proposed SRU, is
  made up of:

  1. Use DejaVu Sans Mono as default Arabic font for monospace
instead of the previous non-mono font

  2. No longer conflicts with Kubuntu's custom font configuration

  [Test case]

  * Install the language-selector-{gnome,common} packages
from focal-proposed.

  * Open the Language Support tool and install Arabic.

  * Open a terminal window, run the below commands and confirm
that you get the same output:

$ LC_CTYPE=ar_EG.UTF-8 fc-match
NotoSansArabicUI-Regular.ttf: "Noto Sans Arabic UI" "Regular"
$ LC_CTYPE=ar_EG.UTF-8 fc-match monospace
DejaVuSansMono.ttf: "DejaVu Sans Mono" "Book"

  [Regression risk]

For some users this will change the default monospace font for
rendering Arabic. That's the point. :)

The change will only affect users with an Arabic locale. The risk that
other users would be affected by the change is low.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-09-27 Thread Bulat
Hey guys! Very excited and waited so much to the moment when this bug will be
fixed.
Any chances that the patch will be included into ubuntu mainline kernel build?
(something go wrong when I attempting to boot from the patched kernel: in the
very start says "Loading initial ramdisk" and hangs forever, tried to google
the issue, but no luck at this moment, plz contact me if you know(or have
ideas) the solution)
Thanks!

Regression: block staircase display with side-by-side monitors of
  different pixel widths

Status in Linux:
  Unknown
Status in libxcb package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xfwm4 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Update based on further research.

This only happens when the secondary external display is operating at
a different pixel width to the internal. In this case eDP is 1920x1080
whereas the external HDMI-A-0 is natively 1680x1050.

It is caused by xfwm4's recent switch from using glx to xpresent for
  AMD GPUs.

The underlying bug is in the AMD driver.

I was able to reproduce on an external 1920x1200 display only when it
  was set to a non-native 1680x1050 resolution.

  ---
Two identical Lenovo E495 laptops with 20.04 installed. The problem occurred
initially on the laptop that is having package upgrades applied regularly.

With dual monitors and the external monitor placed left or right the
display has a blocked staircase effect shown in the attached
  photograph, and seems related to

  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
  amdgpu/-/issues/10

More detailed investigation suggests it only happens when the X
coordinate of the two monitors is different. The symptom looks like an
off-by-one error because it appears as if the display is divided into,
say, 10 rows and 15 columns but the first row has 16 'columns' worth
of blocks on it and so wraps to the beginning of the 2nd row, and so
  on.

On the laptop without package upgrades being applied this didn't
happen. So I upgraded it (314 packages) and restarted and it too sees
  the same problem.

I suspected libxcomposite1 and downgraded it to 1:0.4.5-0ubuntu1 but
  that didn't solve it.

I now suspect libxcb but so far haven't been able to prove it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1896349] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2020-09-27 Thread william backus
new install ubuntu 20.04.01

same audio issue, settings and pavucontrol only see hdmi audio out and not
intel hda audio
older dell desktop with 4 years previous use ubuntu. audio worked on morning of
my fresh install ubuntu 20.04.01. oddly virtualbox install ubuntu 20.04 and
other dist same linux, but broke my base machine. base machine restart and
messing with pavucontrol allowed my to select appropriate settings to restore
audio after exit virutalbox session. all else works and i do not want to risk
all my transfer/setup trying to fix this one issue, as important as it may be
to me.

just politely adding my experience to thread in case future update may
address this issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1896397] Re: [UIFe] Tweak Arabic font

2020-09-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Last change: Back to Noto Sans Arabic UI for sans-serif.

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
This is a follow-up of bug #1891733. After the new default font for
Arabic had made it to focal, we got some additional feedback at
- . There seems to be a consensus to
- make these adjustments:
+ . After further discussion, trial
+ and error, and multiple changes in groovy it has landed in a consensus
+ to make these adjustments:

- * Replace "Noto Sans Arabic UI" with "Noto Naskh Arabic UI" as
- default Arabic font for sans-serif
+ * Rename the .conf file from 69- to 56-
+
+ * Drop binding="strong"

  * Drop the specification for monospace, and with that fall back
to DejaVu for Arabic monospace
+
+ The significance of the changes, which motivates the proposed SRU, is
+ made up of:
+
+ 1. Use DejaVu Sans Mono as default Arabic font for monospace
+instead of the previous non-mono font
+
+ 2. No longer conflicts with Kubuntu's custom font configuration
+
+ [Test case]
+
+ * Install the language-selector-{gnome,common} packages
+ from focal-proposed.
+
+ * Open the Language Support tool and install Arabic.
+
+ * Open a terminal window, run the below commands and confirm
+ that you get the same output:
+
+ $ LC_CTYPE=ar_EG.UTF-8 fc-match
+ NotoSansArabicUI-Regular.ttf: "Noto Sans Arabic UI" "Regular"
+ $ LC_CTYPE=ar_EG.UTF-8 fc-match monospace
+ DejaVuSansMono.ttf: "DejaVu Sans Mono" "Book"
+
+ [Regression risk]
+
+ For some users this will change the default monospace font for rendering
+ Arabic. That's the point. :)
+
+ The change will only affect users with an Arabic locale. The risk that
+ other users would be affected by the change is low.

@Coiby Xu (coiby)

You are the best !!!

First of all, thank you very much for the patch - it works perfectly.
All I had to do was add the fix from @wangjun (biggerchina).

Here is the link to the working patch:
https://gitlab.manjaro.org/packages/core/linux58/-/raw/master/0304-i2c-hid-core.patch?inline=false

The kernel 5.8.12-2 of Manjaro Linux 5.8.12-2 already contains it.
I will also include it in the 5.9-rc7.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1897464] [NEW] Problmes with disk size with zfs

2020-09-27 Thread Yuri Weinstein
Public bug reported:

I created a VM that has 64GB of hard drive space and I used zfs during
install.

Now here is what I see via desktop GUI:
Disks => 69 GB
Computer => 23.6 GB

Two pools:
zpool list
NAMESIZE ALLOC FREE CKPOINT EXPANDSZ FRAGCAP DEDUPHEALTH
ALTROOT
bpool 1.88G 427M 1.46G- - 0%22% 1.00xONLINE -
rpool59G 38.7G 20.3G- -36%65% 1.00xONLINE -

As a result I run out of space.

So I am confused, why is my disk size only 23.6 GB ?

Definitely seems like a bug in how Computer shows the disk size.

** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1897460] [NEW] VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird

2020-09-27 Thread Andrew Piziali
Public bug reported:

When I changed my default video player from Totem to VLC, Thunderbird
was no longer able to play an email message video attachment. By
default, Ubuntu Software installs the VLC snap package, whose permission
scheme prohibits it from accessing the directory where Thunderbird saves
the video file to be played (/tmp/mozilla_andy0). VLC reports:

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///tmp/mozilla_andy0/[VIDEO FILENAME]'.
Check the log for details.

To reproduce the bug:
1. Open a Thunderbird message.

2. Single left click on an attached video file handled by VLC.

3. VLC starts and then opens an error dialog with the above "Your input
can't be opened" message.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1897455] [NEW] Notifications don't say which VPN and network interface

2020-09-27 Thread William Dietrich
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu MATE 20.04: If I connect to or disconnect from a VPN, I get a
notification that says something like "disconnected from Network". This
is too generic. Every notification involving a VPN change should
specify the VPN connection name, and the underlying network interface
name too. Every notification involving a network interface change (such
as enabling/disabling Wi-Fi or Ethernet) should specify the network
interface name. Every notification involving Wi-Fi should specify the
Wi-Fi network name. Always give as much information as possible and
reasonable. Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1897454] [NEW] Chromium Dev Snap cuts off Wayland display

2020-09-27 Thread Jasiek Marcinkowski
Public bug reported:

Since v87 Chromium ships with support for Ozone/Wayland:
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=Chrome-87-Ozone-Try-Again.

This build flag is not disabled in dev (edge) channel build, so it should be
possible to run Chromium with flags
  --enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland.

This does not work due to environment variable DISABLE_WAYLAND set to 1 here:
https://git.launchpad.net/~chromium-team/chromium-browser/+git/snap-from-source/tree/snapcraft.yaml?h=dev#n18.

** Affects: chromium-browser (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1897440] [NEW] Since ~Sep 25 updates HDMI Digital Out disappeared, Headphones stop working

2020-09-27 Thread Example Email
Public bug reported:

For last couple of months I've been using 20.04 sound OK on my Dell
laptop but since last apt update/upgrade two strange things happened:

1. the HDMI Out sound device completely disappeared and I can't select
it in pavucontrol/GNOME/any application

2. when I use Built-In Audio Analog Stereo > Headphones , it works for
only few seconds and then stops.

Thus the only sound that remains working is Built-In Audio Analog Stereo >
Speakers (cheesy built-in speakers). This is what worked all the time during
the ubuntu-bug test.
