  I installed Intrepid fresh onto this laptop (HP Pavilion dv9540us),
  and the alert sounds don't play.  Instead, whenever I make one of the
  rather common mistakes that cause an alert sound (such as hitting
  backspace one too many times), there's a very loud, and very annoying,
  beep from the internal speaker.

  If I go to system-preferences-sound, where I would expect to disable
  the annoying beep, I find that the System Beep tab is now gone.  I
  agree with this decision - this is 2008, we should never be using the
  internal speaker for anything.  Especially not shutdown noises, where
  it's not even obvious how to disable it.

  After googling, however, I found that many others have this problem,
  and strangely enough the solution is to click disable alert sounds
  even though the alert sound itself never plays.

  So, there are two bugs here then: 
  1) The nice alert sound isn't used at all. I've never heard it in Ubuntu, 
only annoying PC speaker beeps.
  2) We use the PC speaker instead of the alert sound, and disabling the PC 
speaker is difficult since we no longer have the system beep tab.

  Upon opening Emacs, it resizes larger than the available screen size.
  The vertical height is too big and the minibuffer is completely
  covered.

  I've installed jde, emacs-goodies-el, and pylint which all have some
  Emacs components, but I recall this happening prior to this too.

  When emacs first starts, the minibuffer is visible. However, it
  resizes itself and unity does not accommodate the change.

  I've attached a screenshot. When this happens, restore then maximize
  makes the window the right size.

  When switching monitors from laptop to docked dual monitors, with the
  following script, I expect my monitors will be set up correctly, and
  display correctly:

  properly when the displays are changed underneath it.

  Finally found the reason ;-)

  On 5 machines I upgraded from Maverick to Natty, Unity doesn't start
  on any of them.

  However all my machines have both kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop
  installed, and use KDM as graphical login manager.

  Starting the Ubuntu session from KDM will open a session where Unity
  doesn't start (only desktop background comes up)

  Stopping KDM (sudo stop kdm), then starting GDM (sudo start gdm),
  logging into the Ubuntu session from GDM, and then unity works.

  This being perfectly reproductible on all machines I tested it on (all
  upgraded from Maverick to Natty).

That's a very strange way for it to get solved. When you earlier said
that 12.10 was also affected were you attempting an upgrade or a fresh
install?

It's possible that you've just had some unlucky upgrades or bad installs
if stock configurations are working correctly.

Mention this bug and the fact that this did not fix it for you. Take a
look at the freedesktop.org bugzilla report linked at the top of this
page - it will provide steps on how to get the proper logs to make sure
that this is indeed intel's fault. Attach the same logs in the same
manner that I did in the bugzilla report so that Mr. Wilson will be able
to get a better look at the problem.

with the fixed package, it doesn't

[Regression potential]

To ease the backporting, I did replace patch 101 with the commit that
was pulled upstream. This patch is needed for smooth transition from
plymouth to X. There _could_ be some issues with it (meaning
additional patches needed from upstream), but it seems to be working
just fine for me.

The precise upload has another upstream fix for an issue referenced in
bug 992391, it should be safe.

This happens intermittently. Sometimes upon resume, all I see is a
black screen and the cursor. the mouse and keyboard respond (the mouse
moves) but nothing changes. Switching to console and back doesn't fix
it. Killing Compiz also does not fix the issue. Further, if one has
password lock disabled on resume the user will be stuck with a frozen
display of whatever was last shown on the screen before suspend. The
mouse cursor still changes as you hover over various elements but the
display is frozen solid. One can switch to another TTY via ctrl+alt+F1
but killing the X session is the only way to get back to the desktop.

Attempts to replace compiz have been fruitless. Trying the 3.4 kernel
also did not fix the issue.

BTW, I haven nothing connected to the laptop when I resume and before
suspend. This is a very annoying issue because the only way to
recover is to reboot, which means all the open files will be lost.

plymouth to X. There _could_ be some issues with it (meaning
additional patches needed from upstream), but it seems to be working
just fine for me.

suspend. This is a very annoying issue because the only way to
recover is to reboot, which means all the open files will be lost.

  [UPDATE]
  It was discovered that switching to a tty, killing compiz, then invoking 
'metacity --replace' would successfully switch over to metacity. Attempting to 
invoke 'compiz --replace' afterwards would put the state right back where it 
was (frozen screen, etc.) and output error messages saying something similar to 
invalid configuration, this should never happen, you should probably raise a 
bug report about it. After killing Compiz again and invoking compiz --replace 
yet again I can get basic window management back (though unity --replace still 
does not work as it whines about unclean exit states). So one still needs to 
start over again to get it all functioning properly.

It's tracking the status in GNOME's bugzilla - they marked it as a dupe.

If I were you I wouldn't get your hopes up on this feature being
included. They'd rather sniff glue than put any design effort into their
programs, so you might as well install a different file manager at this
point. This request is six years old and will still be here until Gnome
finally dies.

  dropdown menus, right- or left-click, on the system-tray nm icon show

  Hello guys,

  This bug is quite annoying, and seems stricly related to *nm-applet*.
  Starting up the laptop with Wireless, brings a cut version of the
  network menu, and it's impossible to connect to any VPN connection or
  switch Wireless network. If starting up the laptop with Wireless
  disabled, the menu is even further reduced to just 4 items (Enabled
  Network / Wireless and Connection Info / Edit Connections). Some other
  times some weird combination appears, like VPN entries completely
  gone, but still, they are there if you edit them !

  Switching Wireless on and off resolve the problem, and menu fully
  appear. Even waiting for 1 hour after boot, it doesn't make the menu
  appear correctly.

  This problem happens at every boot.

I'm sorry, Francesco, but the design spec has been set by the design
team for a long time, now. Presently, a long click is the recommended
way of shifting application icons around the launcher. Remember, this
isn't a touchscreen environment - there will be other builds for that as
Unity allows for those environments. This is a *desktop* UI.

Re: Mozilla/Gnome shell having those designs: Saying that Unity should
do it because they are is the bandwagon fallacy.

Again, just because GTK is making it *possible* doesn't mean it *should*
be done.

And, no, a good desktop doesn't have to allow a user to do one thing a
million different ways: Trying to support a million different options
for a million different items is programming madness: Would you want to
maintain all of these options for the sake of the very very few people
that would customize it like that?

If the press and hold is not interfering with other gestures already
available in unity, adding it to unity will only increase the value for
unity; probably not only for me.

I'm sorry, but that statement has no data to back it up. It may increase
the value for Unity but it would in effect trash the design that Ayatana
has been working on for years and inevitably cause much breakage on the
dev side of things.

  resuming (suspend of a few seconds), I get no warning.

  - right click on it in nautilus
  - select properties in the menu

  the properties dialog get stretched to accomodate the image infos, it

  some labels in the properties dialog would be wrongly formatted

  There's no line break for the key tag, so if an image has many
  keywords it breaks the properties window (window is stretched to
  display all keywords).

  Possible solutions:

  - only display a certain amount of keywords and put (...) to indicate that 
there are more
  - introduce line breaks after a set amount of characters

  Regression potential: the sidepanel could behave in a buggy weird on
  drag and drops events

  Note that before it was possible to add a bookmark by dnding a folder to the 
sidepanel, that has several limitations:
  - it's only working with folders
  - it was not working on a fresh install before you had something bookmarked
  - the feature behaviour was confusing
  - there is already an ui to add bookmark, users use the sidepanel rather to 
access those than for adding new ones

  The change is a slight behaviour change but the new one is the logical
  one and replace a buggy confusing one

I've had this issue as well. I think this is a unity error, and probably
specifically dealing with that slightly wonky icon animation when
installations occur.

For the record, I always have the software center maximized.

  Sometimes when I try to select (right mouse) the property of a folder
  or file, the system freezes the folder that contains it getting dark
  grey and a window shows up telling
  GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not
  receive a reply (timeout by message bus). I have not other choice to
  close the window. No other effect I have noticed and as it has come it
  goes away.

  Under Natty, the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/65compiz_profile-on-session
  reads as follows:

  The purpose of this script is to enable the Unity plugin in compiz in
  the default session (where there is no gnome-shell or -panel) so that
  the Unity shell is activated. There are two problems with this script:

  1) The first one being that it depends on the environment variable
  $GDMSESSION being set while /etc/X11/Xsession runs. This leads to
  problems on LTSP clients where LDM instead of GDM is used so that
  there is no variable $GDMSESSION. (This problem could be solved in the
  ldm package by adding a script to /usr/share/ldm/rc.d but this
  wouldn't solve the problem for other desktop managers.) In Oneiric,
  the environment $DESKTOP_SESSION is used instead of $GDMSESSION but I
  am not sure whether this should be set by all desktop managers.

  2) The second problem with this script is that enabling the Unity
  plugin depends on the session being named gnome. This means that one
  cannot rename the session in /usr/share/xsessions without breaking
  Unity or one cannot easily install a second Unity session in this
  directory.

  A solution would be to enable the Unity plugin while gnome-session is
  processing the file /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu.session,
  although I don't know how to hook a script in a gnome-session session
  file.

changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. Compiz, in particular, is
in heavy development and this bug may have been fixed in the next
version of Ubuntu (12.04) if not on the current 11.10 release. If you
are able, it would be of great help if you could confirm if the bug
still exists by testing a livecd or live thumb drive (available at
http://www.ubuntu.com). When you test it and if it is still an issue,
kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect bug # and any
other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. Please keep in
mind that I am not recommending you change your current setup - this
would merely be beneficial to see if the issue persists in a newer
version. I seem to be unable to reproduce this issue on 12.04.

  what would be nice would be if pinned windows retained their pinning
  preference after being closed for when they next open.

  I have my Emacs windows set up to display in very specific locations
  with very specific widths and heights.  Unity messes up those geometry
  calculations in several ways:

  * When the initial Emacs window comes up, it is too far right.
  Normally, I have my Emacs window come up on the right edge of the left
  screen, but with Unity, it comes up so that a strip of about 1 wide
  lives on the right screen, while the rest lives on the left screen.

  * When I create the second Emacs window (via Emacs keybinding), the
  window opens too tall.  It opens in the correct location horizontally
  (namely: right next to the first Emacs window), but it is about two
  text lines too tall.

  * When Unity crashes (see some of my other bugs), and restarts.  All
  the Emacs windows are about an inch lower.  Do this enough times and
  the windows crawl right off the bottom of the screen.

Well, I can't reproduce this on 12.04. Which isn't to say the bug isn't

Ah, I just did this at 1024x768 (hadn't done it at a low-enough
resolution) and it does trigger on 12.04.

Regardless, I think this not a compiz bug since it's doing what it's
supposed to. Software-center should provide functionality for handling
this (should it desire to) and, most importantly, have a smaller minimum
resolution size.

I think that if the issue is for compiz to be forbidden to forcibly put
windows below their minimum size, there should be another bug
specifically for that as I interpret this report to be specifically
about software-center's search bar mishaps.

  1. Using a lower resolution monitor, take your window, drag it to one side of

  You will now notice that the search bar is missing, it is my thoughts
  that this is happening because when you pin the window to the side of
  the screen it makes it smaller than it is supposed to go.

  Reproduction steps:
  1. Open some Multi-media player, ex. totem.
  2. Open some directory contains multi-media files in Nautilus
  3. Maximize Nautilus
  3. resize totem to quarter of your screen, position it to top-right corner.
  4. Make sure Totem is above nautilus, and totem doesn't cover your 
multi-media files.
  5. Try to Drag-n-Drop some file from Nautilus to Totem.
  6. You'll notice that:
   On Click, Nautilus gets focus and totem loses it, thus obstacles drag-n-drop.

  Suggested Fix:
   1. Window manager should get focus if user clicked on area of the window, 
except for items(icons).
   2. Button_Clicking on icons in window manager, should not change focus state.

  In Compiz, the resizing part of this bug is masked by bug 819856.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1)Go to System-Preferences-Appearance -Visual Effects and select 'Extra'
  2)Make sure that you have installed the Advanced CompizConfig Settings 
Manager package.
  3)Go to System-Preferences-Appearance -CompizConfig Settings Manager and 
enable Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube
  4)Create a new panel
  5)Right click on it and open properties
  6)Set orientation to be right or left (side panels)
  7)Select autohide
  8)Close the 'Panel Properties' window
  (the panel should hide now)
  9)Try to 'mouse over' the panel to make it show up.
  It just won't show up.
  10)Try to check-uncheck the options Edge Flip Pointer, Edger Flip Move, 
Edge Flip DnD in the submenu for the Rotate Cube effect and attempt to 
unhide the hidden panel. In my case nothing changed this way.
  The only way to see an auto hidden side panel is to right click on a launcher 
from an other panel, select move and move it to the hidden panel.

I'm not sure what to make of this -- this is something that should be
handled on the level of the program, not the window manager itself.

For instance, bug 373974 deals with the update manager's issues with
focus stealing.

bug 391479 deals with windows stealing focus on another desktop.

Also, with modal dialogues around the corner, I believe that this most
certainly makes any issue like this pertain to the program itself (and
should be filed as such); since it's the programmer's job to set what
buttons are focused.

  Sometimes when (often) I type (on IM or OOo or whatever), an
  application decides to show up a dialog box (whatever the program is,
  I'm not talking about a specific program, it's a general-purpose
  problem) that is focused on top and before I could realize that the
  box had showed up I type on the space bar : this valid the default
  choice even if I did not wanted to !

  I have several solutions for this :
* Disable button checking with the space bar
* Disable button checking with the space bar if a key has been pressed in 
the last XX seconds (2 seconds ?)
* Disable button checking with the space bar if the dialog was focused on 
top of an other application

are defined for switching workspaces aren't working consistently
  I have checked that they are still defined in the Keyboard Shortcuts window, 
and tried redefining them.
  It seems that applications are now receiving the events sometimes.
  Symptoms are:
   * In Firefox, Ctrl-F4 initially closes a tab, then switches to workspace 
four. Other keypresses behave similarly - the initial Ctrl sequence seems to be 
sent to the application
   * In gnome-terminal, if I have been typing in the terminal, pressing Ctrl-F2 
through Ctrl-F5 the first time yields character sequences like;5Q;5R;5S. 
Repeating the keypress while Ctrl is held down (or pressing a different 
Ctrl-Fn) actually switches workspace. When I first hold down Ctrl, the cursor 
changes from solid rectangle to an outline. Pressing any key (e.g. Alt, Shift, 
F1, etc) changes it back to a solid rectangle. Since Ctrl-Alt doesn't do 
anything, the easiest way to avoid the problem is to hold down Ctrl, press Alt, 
release Alt, then press Fn whilst still holding down Ctrl

  I am using Compiz as the window manager, and I have the Gnome
  Compatibility and Commands plugins enabled

  I am using SCIM and it is configured with Ctrl-Space as the trigger
  and Ctrl-Shift switches to the next language

  E.g., if the search found an item at **/a/b/c/item.txt**, then right-

  Per #914369, we're just now making it possible to learn the location
  of a file that comes up in a search (when you open a **Home Folder**
  window and search for a file using the search box at top right).

  In the search results, please also add an **Open file location**
  selection to the context menu (right-click menu) on each filesystem
  item found. This would open the item's parent folder.

  E.g., if the search found an item at **/a/b/c/item.txt**, then right-
  clicking on its icon and selecting **Open file location** would open a
  new window showing the contents of the **/a/b/c/** folder.

This is incredibly old and most likely a dupe of an ancient bug dealing
with nvidia's proprietary drivers. The issue has since been fixed.

If a similar error is existant in newer iterations of Compiz, please
file a new report.
