[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1060888] Re: Web app prompt appears on every single page load

2012-10-04 Thread Christian Giordano
Ok, no strong opinions. I was just thinking that sometimes a browser
session could last longer. So I would probably go for browser session
unless is older than 1 day.

  1. In Firefox, go to a Web site that integrates with Unity's web apps feature.
  2. Try to scroll the page with a trackpad or mousewheel.
  3. Click a link to another page on the same site.
  4. Click the link again.
  5. Repeat steps 2~4 a few more times.

  What happens:
  1. A web app prompt appears.
  2. The prompt blocks scrolling with trackpad/mousewheel.
  3. The prompt also blocks your first attempt to click something on the page.
  5. The prompt reappears on every single page.

This is terrible design. Sometimes Web sites do something like this on
the first or second page you visit in a session: putting up an
advertisement or an invitation for a survey, that you can click
outside to return to the page. But if any site did that on *every*
page you visit, nobody would visit that site any more. So this is
appropriate behavior only if you don't want any non-Ubuntu Web site to
ever adopt the web apps feature.

  What should happen: either
  * the prompt appears only once per site per Firefox session, or
  * the prompt appears only once per site per day.

  FFe rationale:
  - fixes broken functionality that users expect to 'just work'.
  - code change is very isolated and limited.
  - zeitgeist is relatively mature and proven technology.
  - adds new dependency to Unity, but on the other hand, zeitgeist is already
present in the distro and many packages depend on it (such as lenses).

===

Files deleted by dragging and dropping the file from the Dash to the
Trash are not removed from the Dash

  To Reproduce:
  1. Open the Dash File Lens
  2. Drag and drop a file from the File Lens to the Trash
  3. Re-open the Dash and navigate to the File Lens
  4. Notice that the file you just deleted is still there!
  5. Try to load the file by clicking on it.
  6. Nothing happens.

  Desired Resolution:
  - As soon as a file is deleted by dragging and dropping it from the Dash to
the Trash, the file should be immediately removed from the Dash

Experiment with timings to find a speed that feels good and is very

Within most GTK applications, it is possible to cancel a drag and drop

having any effect of the operation.

  Steps to reproduce:

  -
  Desired solution:

  - When a new user starts using ubuntu, the window animation should be
slowed down. However to prevent the slow animation making Ubuntu feel
slow or frustrating over long term usage, the speed of the animation
should increase the more it is used, until the speed reaches it's
  current value.

  - The speed should increase over the first 100 window minimizations
e.g. the very first time a user minimizes a window, the animation is
very obvious and slow, and the 100th and subsequent times the user
minimises a window the animation has the current fast speed.

  - This will also need to be tested and the values refined, so the
'starting speed', 'speed decline duration in number of minimises' and
'ending speed' variables (as well as a 'reset' option for testing
purposes) will need to be exposed in CCSM

Status in Ayatana Design:

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Dash jumps from one monitor to another in a multi-monitor environment.
There are two ways to reproduce this issue:

  First way to reproduce:

  1. Open GEdit on the right monitor
  2. Open the Dash on the left monitor
  3. Leaving the Dash open, click the save button in GEdit

  See attached video dash_jumps.ogv.

  Second way to reproduce:

  1. Open the Dash on the left monitor
  2. Type one character
  3. Move the pointer to the right monitor
  4. Type another character

Result: The Dash jumps from one monitor to another, this is incorrect.

  See attached video dash_jumps2.ogv

Current incorrect behaviour: The Dash jumps from one monitor to
another, and on the second monitor shows an empty Launcher!

  What should happen:

  - The Dash should close when the user clicks anywhere that is not
inside the Dash on *any* monitor. The click action should trigger
whatever was clicked on, e.g. in the case above, clicking on the GEdit
save button should save the text file and close the Dash at the same
  time.

  - Once the Dash is open, it should *never* jump to another monitor.
The Dash should always remain on the monitor it was opened on.

  - Fixing this bug will also fix the issue with ghost images of windows
that are no longer behind the dash appearing behind the Dash in multi-
monitor environments (watch the background behind the Dash in
screencast dash_jumps2.ogv to see this issue). Fixing this bug will
remove the possibly of the user entering the state where these ghost
  images can occur.

Bug description:
  Setup:
Laptop with an external monitor attached: laptop display on the left,
Launcher on the laptop display.

  Steps to replicate:
Launch a web browser and drag the browser window across to the external
display.
Launch the Dash on the laptop display. The Dash is displayed and the Search
box takes keyboard focus.
Try to click in the URL bar of the browser window on the external display.

At this point the Dash should have been dismissed, the browser window
should have been focused and the URL bar should take keyboard focus.
Instead, the Dash remains visible and keeps window and keyboard focus.

  Solution:
The Dash should be dismissed when anything is clicked in another display.
This click should be actioned immediately by any control it targets.

And we use overlay scrollbars, which are invoked when the mouse is

Interactions between the overlay scrollbar and the magic window border
are subtle and can either enhance or degrade the experience
  substantially.

The overlay scrollbar should be a little harder to invoke near the
bottom right corner, because that is a particularly important spot for
resizing windows, a common operation. In general, perhaps it should
not be possible to invoke the overlay scrollbar thumb when the mouse
is within 20px of the bottom right corner of the window.

Bug description:
Reduce the spread delay for all items other than the initial item the
select lands on after alt-tab opens. After the user moves the select
off it's opening position, spread delay should be shortened. This
change is because a longer spread delay is only required for the
initial item to allow the user time to scan the items in alt-tab
without being disrupted. The spread delay on all other item can be
shorter, which should give a more responsive feel.

  --
  Note from User Testing:

In user testing, participants did not find the spread because they
moved between applications too quickly. When I pointed out the spread
to them, they commented that the delay was too long. Power users said
that it would be faster for them to find what they were looking for
  without the spread.

  ---

Note: Re-opening bug because user testing has shown us that the spread
delay needs to be shortened even further.

  [Regression Potential]
Trivial change, no other regression potential.

  Original description:

Currently if the sticky edges are disabled, they are *all* disabled.
However what should happen is that if 'sticky edges' is disabled AND
the launcher is set to auto-hide, the sticky edges should remain
active on a single edge (where the launcher is) from a single
direction (the direction the pointer has to travel to reveal the
  Launcher)

  What currently happens:

When the Launcher is set to autohide and 'Sticky edges' are turned
off, 'Launcher Edge Stop Overcome Pressure' seems to be broken when
revealing the Launcher. It is switched off on all edges

  What should happen:

When the Launcher is set to autohide and 'Sticky edges' are turned
off, the 'Launcher Edge Stop Overcome Pressure' should continue to be
active *only* as part of the launcher reveal action. e.g. if the user
moves the pointer from the right to left to reveal the Launcher it
should be triggered and the monitor edge, but if the user moves the
pointer from left to right (or down to up, or up to down) across a
monitor border it should not be triggered.

Bug description:
  Summary:

*After* a user has clicked on a item in the Launcher, the Launcher
should not hide until the user moves their pointer outside of the
  Launcher area.

Note there should not no change to the current behaviour of how the
Launcher hides *before* the user clicks on a item in the Launcher.

  ---
  Scenario to reproduce A

  1) Set the Launcher to auto-hide
  2) Reveal the launcher, and click on the Launcher icon of a application that
is not running to Launch it. Do not move pointer outside of the Launcher.

  What currently happens:
  - After a short delay the Launcher hides

  What should happen:
  - The Launcher should stay open until the user moves their pointer off the
Launcher. When the user does move their pointer off the Launcher, the Launcher
should start closing instantly with no delay

  ---
  Scenario to reproduce B

  1) Set the Launcher to auto-hide
  2) Reveal the launcher, and click on the Launcher icon of a running
application with two or more windows open
  3) pause for 1 or 2 seconds
  4) click on the same icon again

  What currently happens:
  - The spread is reversed (this is the correct behaviour)
  - The Launcher hides (this is incorrect)

  What should happen:
  - The spread is reversed (this is the correct behaviour)
  - The Launcher should stay open until the user moves their pointer off the
Launcher. When the user does move their pointer off the Launcher, the Launcher

Bug description:
Mouse scroll step when cursor is over the unity bar is very small, in fact
it's completely unusable - you have to spin wheel multiple times to simply
switch to the next icon.
It would be great if one mouse wheel event would scroll for one unity's
element.

  -
  Desired solution:

  - The speed at which the mouse wheel scrolls the Launcher (when the
Launcher contains folded icons) needs to be significantly increased,
  at least by 2x.

  - Experiment with setting the distance moved per mouse wheel
revolution to equal that of Firefox. This may be slightly too fast
but it would be good to test.

Bug description:
In gtk+, left-clicking on any point inside the bar of a slider widget
moves the thumb one step towards that point. The thumb can be moved to
a specific point directly by middle-clicking that point on the bar.

In Ubuntu, some slider widgets have been altered to always jump to the
clicked point directly, regardless of the mouse button that was
  pressed.

This is inconsistent and confusing, especially when sliders in the
same app behave differently. For example, the mouse, keyboard,
brightness, and accessibility settings in System Settings use the gtk+
style slider, while the sound and appearance settings use the other
  style.

Furthermore, this kind of change should not be made inside
applications, but in gtk+ itself (even if the two kinds of behaviors
  are desired).

  Original description:

Having the help screen displayed when the super key is pressed long

Having workspace switching shorcuts added is even better (I won't have
  to add them myself anymore).

Both combined have a very annoying side-effect: while I switch between
workspaces searching for the right one, I leave the super key
pressed... which triggers the help display.. which obscures the
  workspaces I'm searching...

This is on an up-to-date precise system and has started a few days
ago. I think I have a good idea about which shortcuts exist now, can I
have a way to disable the help screen or make it less intrusive ?

  -
  Desired Solution:

When any other key is pressed while Super is held, the shortcuts hint
should be disabled. The shortcuts hint should continue to be disabled
for the duration the SUPER key is held (even if the modifier key is
  subsequently released.)

  1. Open the files lens
  2. Select and drag a document-file (e.g. text or image) to the launcher
 - As you drag the document-file watch the drag-targets (drop-recepticals)
saturate. This saturation-process should be smooth and without flicker. The
tinting of the non-drag-targets should not change.

  [Regression Potential]
Launcher icons not saturating/desaturating/changing colors when Dash is
opened. Same problems during drag-and-drop operations from the launcher.

  Original description:

As soon as a user starts dragging a file from the Dash, all the icons
in the Launcher re-saturate briefly (they 'flicker'), before re-
saturating leaving only the valid drop receptacles illuminated. This
is incorrect, only the icons that are valid drop receptacles should
  change in any way.

The tinting of the launcher icons that are not valid drop receptacles
becomes incorrect when a drag operation is underway, the icons seem to
loose their average background colour tinting.

Also the illumination should fade in (and out) over 100ms, not switch
  on instantly.

  Desired Resolution:

  - When a user starts dragging either:

     a) A item from the Dash
     b) A file in Nautilus
     c) Some test that has been selected

...only the icons that are valid drop recepticals should illuminate.
Icons that are not valid drop recepticals should not flicker, or
  change in any way

  - The illumination of the valid drop recepticals should fade in (fade
  lasting 100ms)

  - The tinting of icons that are not valid drop recepticals should not
change in any way (currently they loose their tinting when a drag
  starts)

  ===

Currently we display the Sources filter as soon as there's at least
one item, but that doesn't make sense, cause you can't disable just
  that one item.

We should be showing the filter only when there are at least two items
and moreover the default lenses that do not export any sources (files
+ music) need to export at least one, so that when extra scopes for
these are installed, everything will be showing up properly.

  ---
  Desired Solution:

  - Only display the source filter when there are two or more sources.

  - The default Lenses should all include a Local files/music/videos
source (of course if this is the only source it should not be
  displayed).

  Description: Ubuntu 11.10

  What happened:
When a quicklist is open the dash cannot be displayed using the super key.
Also the dash appears when the quicklist has lost its focus causing confusion
to the user.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Right click on a launcher item to show the quicklist
  2) Press the 'super' key to reveal the dash - Note that the dash is not shown
  3) Click on the desktop (or anywhere to make the quicklist loose focus) -
Note that the dash is now displayed

  What should have happened:
  - At step 2 the dash should have been displayed, and the quicklist closed

Hope this bug can be fixed.

Bug description:
When hovering the category headers, the line gets highlighted over the
whole dash width, but only when hovering the actual category text
(e.g., Recent AppsSee 6 more results). It's also only
active in that area, so clicking the highlighted area outside of the
  text will do nothing.

However, that's not true for the Filter header, which also gets a
highlight when moving the mouse next to the search field. It's also
expandable by clicking anywhere in the highlighted area. Then again,
this is not true for the filter category headers.

Personally, I'd prefer to see the Filter header behavior (highlight
when hovering the area that's going to get highlighted, whole
highlighted area active) across all headers.

Running Nux r611 and Unity r2275.

  ---
  Desired solution:

  - If the pointer is over a highlight, left clicking should activate
  the highlighted item.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 922299] Re: Mouse-wheeling sliders moves them the wrong way.

2012-04-24 Thread Christian Giordano
The logical incremental direction is left to right (horizontally) and
bottom to top (vertically).

Vertically (e.g.: with scrollbars), to move the thumb towards the
bottom, we move the finger (on top of the mouse wheel) towards us.

Hence the same movement, when we have horizontal slider, should move the
thumb from right to left.

On my current Precise build the Launcher tile in the Appearance panel
and the slider in the Sound indicator work fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 953757] Re: Inconsistent behavior of slider widgets

2012-03-14 Thread Christian Giordano
I agree that option 1 is definitely the worst. I am inclined to option 3 simply
because it is a standard behavior on the web (and in many other places, even
GNOME uses it in the sound menu!). It is also more touch friendly.
I don't think sliders and scrollbars should necessary be so consistent (two
very different beasts), but, as mpt says, our scrollbars are hidden anyways.

I discussed the matter with the people in GNOME and they actually
deliberated for option 3 for sliders and also scrollbars (preserving the
consistency). Clearly, I am not sure about the latter choice, but this
is what our patch should do to get accepted. As said few times, this
doesn't affect us.

1) As the time of the posting, sudo passwd username wasn't allowing that.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine

2012-03-02 Thread Christian Giordano
The problem of the password selection is that is not only used for
administration purposes (sudo) where a very safe environment is highly
recommended. But the password is often used simply to login in the
machine, also just after few minutes the user was away from it. In the
latter case, an increasing of typo errors would result in frustration
for the user. This of course would be different if login and sudo would
use different authentication systems (eg. login through gesture, like on
mobile).

While someone accessing your local machine might be able to access also
your web services, the number of people who can try to hack it is
infinitely smaller.

The user should be discouraged of using very simple passwords but not
forbidden, especially if the password has a fair amount of letters.

Is your computer password as complex as the one of your gmail account?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine

2012-03-02 Thread Christian Giordano
@mpt, in one thing I don't agree. There is a big difference between a
phone and a PC. The phone is, almost, always with you. That's why people
don't mind much showing the unlock code to their friends.

I am not an Android user but I noticed many people using this gestural
based unlock. This could be another way to clearly differentiate login
from admin authentication.

Tablet (the middle device) makes all this more interesting :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 942182] Re: Disable login sound option

2012-02-29 Thread Christian Giordano
As discussed on the mailing list, I would propose to move the login sound
option to the Universal AccessSeeing panel because its main utility at the
moment is notifying the user that the machine is ready to accept inputs.
The sound could be disabled by default but automatically enabled at the first
boot after the installation or if a sight related accessibility profile is
selected.

discussion on the ayatana mailing list.

I agree startup applications is not something that you would use
frequently and the only item inside is the Gnome Login Sound (which
i also believe is not the correct place for it either, as i was
looking how to disable startup sound a few days ago in more logical
places like user accounts or sounds but did not find it , so i had to
  do an online instructions search...).

Agree, that's a terrible place for the login sound - it's a hack
surfaced to the user. Please file a bug.

  Mark

I propose that it being integrated into the sound menu or the user
  accounts menu as an option.

2012-02-15 Thread Christian Giordano
How often is the case someone doesn't need the sound menu? What are the
reasons behind this need?

Try to work out how to hide the sound menu is not a problem.

If the problem is too many indicators visible, different other options
can be taken and we have already solutions for it (see group
indicators). Our sound menu is such a powerful feature which should
probably be kept always visible.

What should happen: At the bottom left corner of the System Settings

it is checked, the sound menu should be present in the menu bar.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 922516] [NEW] The background in the monitor image in appearance shouldn't be visible

2012-01-27 Thread Christian Giordano
Public bug reported:

It currently uses:
/usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/background/display-base.png
and this as overlay:
/usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/background/display-overlay.png

As a matter of fact the assets seem transparent. What is causing the
issue?

** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
