[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1060888] Re: Web app prompt appears on every single page load
Ok, no strong opinions. I was just thinking that sometimes a browser session could last longer. So I would probably go for browser session unless is older than 1 day. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to unity-chromium-extension in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1060888 Title: Web app prompt appears on every single page load Status in Ayatana Design: Fix Committed Status in Chromium extension: Unity Integration: New Status in Firefox extension: Unity Integration: Invalid Status in WebApps: Websites integration Firefox plug-in: In Progress Status in “unity-chromium-extension” package in Ubuntu: New Status in “unity-firefox-extension” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “webapps-greasemonkey” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: 1. Click the link again. 5. Repeat steps 2~4 a few more times. What happens: 1. A web app prompt appears. 2. The prompt blocks scrolling with trackpad/mousewheel. 3. The prompt also blocks your first attempt to click something on the page. 5. The prompt reappears on every single page. This is terrible design. Sometimes Web sites do something like this on the first or second page you visit in a session: putting up an advertisement or an invitation for a survey, that you can click outside to return to the page. But if any site did that on *every* page you visit, nobody would visit that site any more. So this is appropriate behavior only if you don't want any non-Ubuntu Web site to ever adopt the web apps feature. The thumb can be moved to a specific point directly by middle-clicking that point on the bar. In Ubuntu, some slider widgets have been altered to always jump to the clicked point directly, regardless of the mouse button that was pressed. This is inconsistent and confusing, especially when sliders in the same app behave differently. For example, the mouse, keyboard, brightness, and accessibility settings in System Settings use the gtk+ style slider, while the sound and appearance settings use the other style. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 953757] Re: Inconsistent behavior of slider widgets
I agree that option 1 is definitely the worst. I am inclined to option 3 simply because it is a standard behavior on the web (and in many other places, even GNOME uses it in the sound menu!). It is also more touch friendly. I don't think sliders and scrollbars should necessary be so consistent (two very different beasts), but, as mpt says, our scrollbars are hidden anyways. I discussed the matter with the people in GNOME and they actually deliberated for option 3 for sliders and also scrollbars (preserving the consistency). Clearly, I am not sure about the latter choice, but this is what our patch should do to get accepted. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine
The problem of the password selection is that is not only used for administration purposes (sudo) where a very safe environment is highly recommended. But the password is often used simply to login in the machine, also just after few minutes the user was away from it. In the latter case, an increasing of typo errors would result in frustration for the user. This of course would be different if login and sudo would use different authentication systems (eg. login through gesture, like on mobile). While someone accessing your local machine might be able to access also your web services, the number of people who can try to hack it is infinitely smaller. The user should be discouraged of using very simple passwords but not forbidden, especially if the password has a fair amount of letters. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 939595] Re: User can't set simple passwords for his local machine
@mpt, in one thing I don't agree. There is a big difference between a phone and a PC. The phone is, almost, always with you. That's why people don't mind much showing the unlock code to their friends. I am not an Android user but I noticed many people using this gestural based unlock. This could be another way to clearly differentiate login from admin authentication. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 942182] Re: Disable login sound option
As discussed on the mailing list, I would propose to move the login sound option to the Universal AccessSeeing panel because its main utility at the moment is notifying the user that the machine is ready to accept inputs. However this is just a hack. Here is the discussion on the ayatana mailing list. I agree startup applications is not something that you would use frequently and the only item inside is the Gnome Login Sound (which i also believe is not the correct place for it either, as i was looking how to disable startup sound a few days ago in more logical places like user accounts or sounds but did not find it , so i had to do an online instructions search...).
