[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1971037] Re: [snap] Firefox starts very slow
Yes. But I'm mostly pissed that Canonical knowingly introduces this regression, without some kind of opt-in. And then incrementally starts fixing it. While technically we all know if will always be slower then it was and take up more disk space. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1971037 Title: [snap] Firefox starts very slow Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Since "22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)" Firefox is installed as a snap. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1971037] Re: [snap] Firefox starts very slow
That really is non-sense. Firefox is open source. Canonical can choose how to build/distribute it. And as a user I can choose to change that. And I just did, I followed these instructions https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/04/how-to-install- firefox-deb-apt-ubuntu-22-04 Now I changed back to a deb based version built by Canonical staff and distributed through Canonical infrastructure. And Firefox starts in 5sec instead of 15sec. This bug report was intended to register that performance significantly regressed. What you are stating is that that is a deliberate choice. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1971037 Title: [snap] Firefox starts very slow Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Since "22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)" Firefox is installed as a snap. I confirm that in the absence of this package the workaround is to download and dpkg -i the package http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libr/libreoffice/libreoffice- nlpsolver_0.9+LibO5.2.4-2_all.deb (this link works today but will break) from debian. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1577137] Re: saned.service masked and cannot be unmasked
This is still a problem with Yaketty Yak. It looks like the systemd configuration files are messed up and urgently need to be fixed. In my configuration (Epson RX420 scanner/printer) connected via USB with the local user trying to scan: found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x080f [USB MFP]) at libusb:003:005 However, scanimage -L No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages). Updating from the PPA mentioned above scanimage still doesn't work, but XSane does. Note: the ppa does not support Yaketty, so I added it using Synaptics (adding repository ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git, then changed the distribution field to Xenial. On my system the bumblebee gets pulled because synaptics has been configured to treat recommends as dependencies. I guess that bumblebee maybe should have been marked as 'suggests'? [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1265570] Re: nvidia-331 update installs bumblebee [xorg-edgers]
I spent about 3 hours too. I was completely baffeled that downgrading nvidia (from aptitude which is a pain compared to synaptic) didn't solve the problem. Worse, ppa-purge also didn't change anything (downgrading everything to the original state right?). I tried modprobe nvidia which completes without any message but doesn't load nvidia. And modprobe nouveau also didn't load (with error messages). Desperately, I removed all nvidia stuff (after the ppa-purge) and managed to boot into kde with now the nouveau driver. Then purged all removed packages and installed nvidia again with jockey. This beta contains LibO 1:3.6.1~rc2-1ubuntu5 where I found the bug still present. However a fix exists for 3.6.1 see upstream comment #20. For us this bug has big implication, because we pull time/billing info from our database and use data pilot to group/format it into our invoices. As this is so important to us (to earn money) this is always the first thing I test with a new version. It actually tests the whole chain of postgresql driver, base and calc data pilots. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 979320]
Hello Thorsten, I am a big believer in free software and in standardization of document formats. First, if a commercial project introduces a bug, there is no way to have a discussion with the developers. With free software I can and that is, most of the time, refreshing. Second, we as a company need to keep our documentation available for at least 10 years after delivering the last product. That would mean for us at least for a period of 15 years after creating a document. That's why we choose ODF and PDF. Obviously the choice for ODF raises a lot of eyebrows internally and externally for us too, as skiani also mentions. The funny thing with standards is that it is not the writing of a standard that makes it a standard, but the adoption of it. So while former versions of OO and LO incorrectly implement it in some respects, that implementation has become the 'defacto standard' pure by market share - at least for now. I honestly can't say if this bug will hold up large scale adoption of > 3.5 (17 users subscribing to this bug only). And when everybody transitions, there will be no difficulties in exchanging documents between companies. In that respect exchanging doc's with MS Office users is a bigger issue. Creating a having config switch as you suggest would probably only have the effect of prolonging the transition phase as new doc's with the broken format would be created with each day passing, which is not would I would want either. It would probably have been better to add a fix to the 3.4.6 release, especially as that was as I understand for a similar reason, file compatibility of encrypted documents, but I guess that is now too late. Having a Save As OpenOffice/LibreOffice 3.3/3.4 option would work for me, but I guess building that, getting it tested and distributed would take so much time that it would be too late to help anyone? Otherwise I would ask you 'yes, pretty please, could you do this for us, ordinary but involved free software users'. Thanks for the attention, I will shut up now, see how the world adopts 3.5.x and then follow. @Christopher We are not living in a very small world. When I receive a document from a customer written in 3.4.4, edit it with 3.5.2 and return it back, to that customer it will look like *I* broke it. Do you expect me to tell the customer they have an infrastructure problem? What you call an EoL version, another person will call 'stable'. Actually the problem here is a not very well thought through migration path from 3.4.4 to 3.5. The promise of the Open Document Format was that this would never be a problem again, since the format is standardized and would not be allowed to change in a direction that causes backwards compatibility problems. However now the standard has not changed, but the interpretation. Actually M$ with their ever changing format seem to do a better job in migrating documents and users to a newer product while maintaining backwards compatibility with slower adopters. Would it not be at least the minimum to warn system administrators of large companies that they may run into this problem before rolling out a new version? The release notes might be the appropriate place. I don't know what you mean by '3.4.4 is broken'? We are creating and editing documents with OO 3.2.1 and LO 3.4.4 intermixed without having this problem. Problems start with 3.5.0 and occur also in 3.5.2. So it is either not fixed in 3.5.2 or has existed from at least from 3.2.1 until 3.4.4. Considering the amount of documents created in that period of time, I don't think it is reasonable to say 'it is fixed in 3.5.2'. Unless you have a workaround to work on 3.5.2 documents with OO 3.2.1 and LO3.4.4? Something more elegant then: export it to MS doc. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 835662] Re: LibreOffice Base forms become extremely slow after switching from currently unusable PostgreSQL SDBC driver to JDBC
Currently I consider the JDBC driver unusably slow. Fortunately the sdbc driver can be fixed by applying a small patch. I hope we will see this in the LO ppa? Ferry -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/835662 Title: LibreOffice Base forms become extremely slow after switching from currently unusable PostgreSQL SDBC driver to JDBC Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: We have been using OpenOffice/LibreOffice Base and SDBC for a long time to access our PostgreSQL databases. After SDBC has apparently gone defunct (tables are all read only), we had to switch to JDBC. However, opening and using forms via JDBC is extremely slow. Following suggestions from the PostgreSQL JDBC mailing list, I logged the queries issued by both drivers (log file is attached). While both drivers spend only a short while doing queries (JDBC: 0.65 s, SDBC: 0.62 s in my test case), the difference in total time used is huge (at least 49 s with JDBC, 2 s with SDBC). It looks to me that JDBC itself cannot be blamed for this bad performance, so I consider this behaviour as a bug of LibreOffice base. Please let me know if you do need any additional information, for example about the used database tables. The table of the form I used for the attached example log is rather unwieldy (many columns), but it has only ~5.500 rows. Anyway, the effect is observable also with much simpler tables and the respective forms.
