[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2077969] Re: my ubuntu taskbar disappeared and when I go to settings>ubuntu desktop this messages appears "no ubuntu settings found" and "oops, something has gone wrong. Please
Hi, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04.1 from Ubuntu 22.04, and I have the same issue. If I start gnome-control-center on the terminal, I get: $ LC_ALL=C gnome-control-center 14:35:12.8558 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ding is installed here. Please fix your installation. 14:35:12.8559 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ubuntu Dock is installed here. Panel disabled. Please fix your installation. So I guess something must have been wrong. So I installed ubuntu-desktop to see if I removed anything important. Didn't fix it. Turns out… I missed gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock Once installed, I get the dock back, and the desktop settings work again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2077969 Title: my ubuntu taskbar disappeared and when I go to settings>ubuntu desktop this messages appears "no ubuntu settings found" and "oops, something has gone wrong. When opening a compose windows (or reply or transfer), sending mail apparently close the windows, but gnome shell continue to show multiple "points", as if multiple windows are still active. Forgot to mention: this is with Ubuntu 20.04. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed
Wow, this is a frustating issue! It took me hours to figure out, simply because I couldn't believe what most solutions for older Ubuntu releases told me: it's broken out of the box and I need to fiddle with samba internals. Yes a simple "sudo smbpasswd -a myusername" is sufficient to make it work (with authenticated shares). But there is no indication whatsoever in the GUI for this! It even proposes to install samba in the first place! It unequivocally passes the message "This is a nice GUI and it takes care of this. No need to worry." But the exact opposite is the case. IMHO this is worse than having no GUI. Without a GUI I know that I just have to do a quick google search and follow some instructions (set up samba...) and all is well in a few minutes or half an hour. At least it's straightforward. I'm a seasoned Linux user, but the current GUI sent me in all the wrong directions. It actively suggests that it takes care of everything, so I thought it'd be highly counterproductive to get in its way and edit samba's configuration myself. (Too many cooks...) I see that there are longstanding technical issues with the connection to PAM and those may be hard to fix. I totally accept that! But please, please, at the very least add some tooltip or popup dialog or text label (or modify an existing one) that informs the user that he is expected to manually add a samba user&password! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus-share in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1554652 Title: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed Status in nautilus-share package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Package libpam-smbpass is removed from 16.04 archives because of bug causing segfault. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1072206] Re: [nvidia] Window content is black or transparent
Hi, I wasn't following this bug until today when I thought enough is enough. (It's been annoying me for quite some time) I'm skeptical of the "fix released" status, since I am *still* experiencing the described behaviour: black or transparent windows. Ubuntu 14.04 compiz 1:0.9.11.3+14.04.20150313-0ubuntu1 nvidia-304-updates 304.125-0ubuntu0.0.2 Thanks to everybody for investigating this non-critical but very annoying bug! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1072206 Title: [nvidia] Window content is black or transparent Status in Compiz: Fix Released Status in Compiz 0.9.11 series: Fix Committed Status in NVIDIA Drivers Ubuntu: Invalid Status in Unity: Invalid Status in compiz package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in unity package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in compiz source package in Trusty: Fix Released Bug description: [ Impact ] With nVidia hardware from time to time window content is rendered black or transparent. The problem manifests more frequently as session uptime increases. Apparently the problem was caused by textures being cached and not freed, resulting in memory exhaustion conditions. It turns out the texture caching is unnecessary anyway. [ Test Case ] Verification requires an nVidia GPU with proprietary drivers. The problem can not be reproduced at will, only after some time (depending on resident GPU memory and usage) and even then only randomly and unreliably. [ Regression Potential ] It is unlikely this change has the potential to introduce new regressions. [ Other Info ] Fix was cherry-picked from the Ubuntu "Vivid Vervet" dev relase where it has been in use for some weeks without problem. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063617] Re: 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1 regression: keeps setting gsettings keys to wrong values
I confirm that this bug is still affecting Compiz in 14.04LTS. Clean install + no CCSM. So, yet another new release (supposedly a "stable, conservative and long-term" one) and still this has not been fixed ! It has now been a year and a half - across 4 releases - and still there is no one assigned for fixing or looking into this... Still there is some progress, as now the bug importance is registered as high. High for high time to fix it, no ? Which team is supposed to debug this? Compiz or another one? There seems to be some other startup processes possibly involved and causing a race condition resulting in the mishap...but which ones and has this been reported to the respective maintenance teams for them to investigate? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063617 Title: 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1 regression: keeps setting gsettings keys to wrong values Status in Compiz: Confirmed Status in Compiz 0.9.9 series: Confirmed Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: NOTE: This bug is for Ubuntu 12.10 and later only. If you experience something similar in 12.04 then please see bug 964270. ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Since version 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1, compiz/unity keeps messing up my gsettings (keybindings and WM prefs). This was already covered in bug 1042041, but the change there mostly caused the bug to happen consistently now. At every session startup I have a script to fix my settings like this: --- 8< gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower "['b']" gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings maximize "['Up']" gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings unmaximize "['Down']" gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode sloppy --- 8< But after restarting compiz, it changes the settings to: --- 8< $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise true $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower ['disabled'] $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings maximize ['Up'] $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings unmaximize ['Down'] $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode 'click' --- 8< I tried to move away /usr/bin/session-migration, that does not change anything, so it's not that script. Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178248] Re: LO (4.0.3) hangs when testing mail merge settings in writer
Hi! Thanks. So let me get this straight... if Google suggests 2 possible ports... and one of them crashes LibreOffice, then this is not a bug in LibreOffice, but we should just use the other port. The only way to get sound is to plug the speakers into my screen that is HDMI connected and ask PulseAudio to use the HDMI for sound output. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes
I agree. But my experience tells me that a kernel crash upon sleep or hibernate is a very difficult bug to troubleshoot. Most of the time, these bugs arise only on a specific hardware or BIOS or ACPI design or other unknown things. In my case, I really like to have to only close the lid when I'm finished with my session and have the computer shut down. In fact I don't really need sleep or hibernate, because my laptop boots Oneiric in exactly 5 seconds - an awesome performance ! Waking from sleep or hibernated would take even more time than that... An other comment I would make is that, in my opinion, the philosophy of open source developpment is all about freedom of choice when it comes to UI and settings - so why restrict options users had previously (and were happy to use) ? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/880331 Title: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: 1. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes
Thank you David for your solution. It does work perfectly. But...I still think this is an issue and not a "simplification". Why would a lambda user be forced to go through dconf-editor (which they probably don't know anything about) in order to have the laptop shutdown when they close the lid because they are finished with their session ? This seem to be a rather normal, intuitive behaviour... Especially when (as is the case on my laptop since Natty) neither hibernate nor sleep work and crash the kernel when executed...
