[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2077969] Re: my ubuntu taskbar disappeared and when I go to settings>ubuntu desktop this messages appears "no ubuntu settings found" and "oops, something has gone wrong. Please

2024-09-10 Thread Gilles Pietri
Hi,
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04.1 from Ubuntu 22.04, and I have the same issue.
If I start gnome-control-center on the terminal, I get:

$ LC_ALL=C gnome-control-center
14:35:12.8558 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ding is installed here.
Please fix your installation.
14:35:12.8559 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ubuntu Dock is installed
here. Panel disabled. Please fix your installation.

So I guess something must have been wrong. So I installed ubuntu-desktop to see
if I removed anything important. Didn't fix it. Turns out… I missed
gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
Once installed, I get the dock back, and the desktop settings work again.

That went out too fast… The second package that may include the first
was: gnome-shell-ubuntu-extensions

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1932328] Re: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows

2021-10-17 Thread Gilles Maitre
With newest Ubuntu 21.10 (Impish) and the supplied TB version 91.1.2 the
problem is now highly critical...
Thank you in advance to rapidly fix it.

Bug description:
Using Ubuntu 21.04 (Hirsute) that starts in Wayland, by default.
Thunderbird version: 78.11.0 with "gnome-support" package.
  Same problem in safe mode.
  Description:
By default in this context, TB is a Wayland task.
When opening a compose windows (or reply or transfer), sending mail
apparently close the windows, but gnome shell continue to show multiple
"points", as if multiple windows are still active.
And after closing TB, it seems maintained in the same state, so it becomes
impossible to relaunch it from the desk. But task manager of "looking glass"
does not show it and it is possible to launch from terminal.
  Provisional solution:
Modify .desktop file to launch with --display=:0 option, that force to use
XWayland interface, as shown by xlsclients (for example).
But it is actually a bug under Wayland context, that also badly interfer with
many add-ons or extensions.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

2020-05-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Forgot to mention: this is with Ubuntu 20.04. And since I upgraded my
main system 14.04->16.04->18.04->20.04 I also confirmed the brokenness
in a VM with a fresh 20.04 setup, just to convince myself that this
issue actually happens out-of-the-box.

Status in nautilus-share package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

This makes nautilus-share very confusing since you won't be able to access
the shares if they are set with authentication.
Users might be stuck thinking file sharing simply doesn't work because of
this.
Perhaps nautilus-share should have a dialog explaining that a samba password
has to be set or have it only with guest access for shares unless the issue
with libpam-smbpass is fixed and back in archive.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

2020-05-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Wow, this is a frustating issue! It took me hours to figure out, simply
because I couldn't believe what most solutions for older Ubuntu releases
told me: it's broken out of the box and I need to fiddle with samba
internals.

Yes a simple "sudo smbpasswd -a myusername" is sufficient to make it work (with
authenticated shares).
But there is no indication whatsoever in the GUI for this! It even proposes to
install samba in the first place!

It unequivocally passes the message "This is a nice GUI and it takes
care of this. No need to worry."

But the exact opposite is the case. IMHO this is worse than having no
GUI. Without a GUI I know that I just have to do a quick google search
and follow some instructions (set up samba...) and all is well in a few
minutes or half an hour. At least it's straightforward.

I'm a seasoned Linux user, but the current GUI sent me in all the wrong
directions. It actively suggests that it takes care of everything, so I
thought it'd be highly counterproductive to get in its way and edit
samba's configuration myself. (Too many cooks...)

I see that there are longstanding technical issues with the connection
to PAM and those may be hard to fix. I totally accept that!

But please, please, at the very least add some tooltip or popup dialog
or text label (or modify an existing one) that informs the user that he
is expected to manually add a samba user&password!

Bug description:
Posting here what gnome says about porting to wayland, and their
  tests:

  GNOME Applications under Wayland
GTK+ has a Wayland backend. If it was enabled at compile-time, you can run a
GTK+ application under Wayland simply by:

  GDK_BACKEND=wayland gnome-calculator
Applications that use Clutter or clutter-gtk also need the Clutter Wayland
backend enabled:

  GDK_BACKEND=wayland CLUTTER_BACKEND=wayland cheese

  https://wiki.gnome.org/Initiatives/Wayland/Applications

==> so hope the settings are well set at compile time; maybe a
rebuilt to get sure all apps are ok.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 17.10
  2. Install backintime-qt4 or gparted application from above list (full may be
acquired from
https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=pkexec+filetype%3Adesktop+path%3A*%2Fapplications%2F*&perpkg=1&page=4
 )
3a. Try to launch backintime-qt4 from shortcut "Back In Time (root)" (located
in /usr/share/applications/backintime-qt4-root.desktop, it uses pkexec
  ($ cat /usr/share/applications/backintime-qt4-root.desktop | grep Exec
  Exec=pkexec backintime-qt4)
3b. Try to launch Gparted from shortcut "GParted" (located in
/usr/share/applications/gparted.desktop, it uses gparted-pkexec)
4a.1. Back In Time does not start from GUI.
4a.2. Back In Time shows error message in console:
4b. gparted-pkexec does not start, reports error

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1143495] Re: udisks reporting input/output error that seems to be nonsense

2016-07-19 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I tried disabling udisks's checking of SMART attributes: open gnome-
disk-utility ("Disks"), select the SSD, click the "hamburger" icon in
the top right corner, SMART, disable. But unfortunately it is
automatically re-enabled after a reboot.

Is there a workaround?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1072206] Re: [nvidia] Window content is black or transparent

2015-09-04 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Hi,
I wasn't following this bug until today when I thought enough is enough. (It's
been annoying me for quite some time)

I'm skeptical of the "fix released" status, since I am *still*
experiencing the described behaviour: black or transparent windows.

Ubuntu 14.04
compiz 1:0.9.11.3+14.04.20150313-0ubuntu1
nvidia-304-updates 304.125-0ubuntu0.0.2

Thanks to everybody for investigating this non-critical but very
annoying bug!

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

With nVidia hardware from time to time window content is rendered
black or transparent. The problem manifests more frequently as
  session uptime increases.

Apparently the problem was caused by textures being cached and not
freed, resulting in memory exhaustion conditions. It turns out the
  texture caching is unnecessary anyway.

  [ Test Case ]

Verification requires an nVidia GPU with proprietary drivers. The
problem can not be reproduced at will, only after some time (depending
on resident GPU memory and usage) and even then only randomly and
  unreliably.

  [ Regression Potential ]

It is unlikely this change has the potential to introduce new
  regressions.

  [ Other Info ]

Fix was cherry-picked from the Ubuntu "Vivid Vervet" dev relase where
it has been in use for some weeks without problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1405289] [NEW] network-manager reports usb link as disconnected

Public bug reported:

When I plug my Motorola XT910 (Razr Max) as USB, with connection sharing
on USB enabled on the phone, network-manager sees it, but reports it as

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 270185] Re: sane-find-scanner sees scanner, scanimage -L does not

2014-09-07 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Sorry, I've finally found the issue on my system: /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf had
the wrong permissions. (But that's my fault, not Ubuntu's!)
Running "SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=128 scanimage -L" put me on the right track.
("configuration file not found")

Please ignore my previous comment.

Does this device correspond to my scanner?. Shouldn't it be owned by the
scanner group? (But changing group ownership to scanner doesn't fix the
scanimage -L issue.)

Before the update to 14.04, scanning worked just fine. It's a
regression.

2014-07-14 Thread Gilles Gigan
Same problem here with HP laptop with AMD graphics. This workaround solves the
problem for me: change to terminal 1 before suspend, and back to terminal 7
after resume.
Place attached script in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ and sudo chmod +x

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1318882] [NEW] lock screen not visible after resume

2014-05-12 Thread Jesse Gilles
Public bug reported:

Hardware: Macbook 2,1
Ubuntu 14.04 (updated)

Suspend and resume works fine, but frequently after resuming from
suspend the unity lock screen is not visible.

The screen is on and the mouse cursor is visible and moves around if the
touch pad is used, but the background is black.

If I switch to a VT and back, the lock screen always appears.

This issue doesn't happen on every resume, but is easily reproducible by
suspending and resuming a few times.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063617] Re: 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1 regression: keeps setting gsettings keys to wrong values

2014-04-29 Thread Gilles Tournier
I confirm that this bug is still affecting Compiz in 14.04LTS. Clean install +
no CCSM.
So, yet another new release (supposedly a "stable, conservative and long-term"
one) and still this has not been fixed !
It has now been a year and a half - across 4 releases - and still there is no
one assigned for fixing or looking into this...
Still there is some progress, as now the bug importance is registered as high.
High for high time to fix it, no ?
Which team is supposed to debug this? Compiz or another one? There seems to be
some other startup processes possibly involved and causing a race condition
resulting in the mishap...but which ones and has this been reported to the
respective maintenance teams for them to investigate?

Bug description:
NOTE: This bug is for Ubuntu 12.10 and later only. If you experience
something similar in 12.04 then please see bug 964270.

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
Since version 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1, compiz/unity keeps messing up my
gsettings (keybindings and WM prefs). This was already covered in bug 1042041,
but the change there mostly caused the bug to happen consistently now.

At every session startup I have a script to fix my settings like this:

  --- 8<
  gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise
  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower "['b']"
  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings maximize "['Up']"
  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings unmaximize "['Down']"
  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode sloppy
  --- 8<

But after restarting compiz, it changes the settings to:

  --- 8<
  $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise
  true
  $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower
  ['disabled']
  $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings maximize
  ['Up']
  $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings unmaximize
  ['Down']
  $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode
  'click'
  --- 8<

I tried to move away /usr/bin/session-migration, that does not change
anything, so it's not that script.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 887983] Re: Preview pane does not refresh after previewing a very large message

2014-04-18 Thread Jesse Gilles
I know this is an old bug, but it still affects 12.04 LTS and I just ran
into it. The LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 workaround does work.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1292694] [NEW] Screen stays black after suspend/resume

2014-03-14 Thread Sidney GILLES
Public bug reported:

I think the bug is the same as the bug number #1081291 since it is exactly the
same for me.
This problem also append with "fglrx" although i can suspend/resume for 5 to 10
times.
With the open source driver, the problem is immediate.
As you can see, i tried the latest version by using the PPA (without the PPA,
it was the same anyway).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1219708] Re: Asus synaptics/elantech touchpad not detected during or after fresh install

2014-01-02 Thread Gilles
Hello !

same issue as Alessio, on same laptop (ASUS X551CA).
i've tried with 12.04.3 LTS and 13.10 : in System, Settings the tab and items
related to touchpad (e.g. dual finger scroll) aren't available, and the
touchpad is just seen as a PS2 Mouse.
in a terminal, by typping "xinput", it's recognized as "PS/2 Elantech Touchpad".

so, no multi touch features avaible, even no 2 fingers scroll.

thanks

Gilles

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1263754] Re: Files in Launcher opens new window instead of restoring minimized trash

Title:
Files in Launcher opens new window instead of restoring minimized
  trash

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I could reproduce this bug on my two computers with 13.10

I'm not sure if this problem is related to Nautilus or the Launcher.

  Instructions :

  1. Open the Trash via the Launcher

Comment : the active arrow in the Launcher appears on Files
  instead of Trash

  2. Minimize the window

Comment : hmm, if I want to make it reappear, which of the two
  icons should I click?

  3. a) Clicking the Files icon, which is shown as active, opens a new
  Files window

   b) Clicking the trash icon, which is shown as inactive, opens the
  Trash

  What is expected?

   1. The Trash icon, not the Files icon, should be shown as active

  OR

   2. The Files icon, which is shown as active, should restore the
Trash window instead of opening a new Home window

  Further information

   1. I could replicate the same bug by opening Nautilus and going
to the trash in step 1

   2. Although I haven't tried it, I remember to have experienced a
similar bug with the folder of an external storage (e.g. USB key)

2013-07-16 Thread Gilles Gravier
Hi!

Thanks. So let me get this straight... if Google suggests 2 possible
ports... and one of them crashes LibreOffice, then this is not a bug in
LibreOffice, but we should just use the other port.

Hum... I like the logic of this. (this is sarcasm)

Gilles.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178248] Re: LO (4.0.3) hangs when testing mail merge settings in writer

2013-05-10 Thread Gilles Gravier
Hi!

Done.

But the terminal window says "Package libreoffice not installed and no
hook available, ignoring".

I am running the absolutely FRESH AND DEFAULT Ubuntu 12.04.02 and
believe me, when I launch LibreOffice Writer, it launches... so no idea
why this message appears.

Gilles.

Bug description:
I am using precise on my desktop. The system uses Intel's Z77 chipset
with an Ivy Bridge CPU. The problem is two issues. I will break it
into two bugs once I get a response from you guys.

Issue 1: Audio out (green 3.5 mm plug) has not sound coming out of it.
The only way to get sound is to plug the speakers into my screen that
is HDMI connected and ask PulseAudio to use the HDMI for sound output.

Issue 2: The audio levels are too low. the Max is decent if you are
sitting next to the speaker. Please keep in mind that I have used
alsamixer and check out the ubuntu-devel ppa for newers Alsa drivers
(they are as new as the ones in precise)

I am willing to test and help sort this out but it is not a major show
  stopper for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes

2011-12-05 Thread Gilles Tournier
I agree.
But my experience tells me that a kernel crash upon sleep or hibernate is a
very difficult bug to troubleshoot.
Most of the time, these bugs arise only on a specific hardware or BIOS or ACPI
design or other unknown things.
In my case, I really like to have to only close the lid when I'm finished with
my session and have the computer shut down.
In fact I don't really need sleep or hibernate, because my laptop boots Oneiric
in exactly 5 seconds - an awesome performance !
Waking from sleep or hibernated would take even more time than that...
An other comment I would make is that, in my opinion, the philosophy of open
source developpment is all about freedom of choice when it comes to UI and
settings - so why restrict options users had previously (and were happy to use)
?

Title:
Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  1. Ubuntu 11.10 kernel 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 14:50:42 UTC
2011 i686
  2. software-center 5.0.1.5 / power settings menu / gnome-power-manager
3.2.0-0ubuntu1
3.expected to keep this option I had configured in Natty after upgrading to
Oneiric
  4. after migrating to Oneiric, this feature (closing the lid shuts down the
laptop) disappeared. There is no way to set it again inside the power settings
menu of the software center, as this option does not appear anymore under the
settings for the lid options. Nor is it possible to set it again via
gconf-editor: apps-->gnome-power-manager-->buttons and set lid_ac and/or
lid_battery to "shutdown" (when changed to "shutdown", it does not change the
power manager behavior when the lid closes)-

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes

2011-12-04 Thread Gilles Tournier
Thank you David for your solution. It does work perfectly.
But...I still think this is an issue and not a "simplification". Why would a
lambda user be forced to go through dconf-editor (which they probably don't
know anything about) in order to have the laptop shutdown when they close the
lid because they are finished with their session ? This seem to be a rather
normal, intuitive behaviour...
Especially when (as is the case on my laptop since Natty) neither hibernate nor
sleep work and crash the kernel when executed...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 880317] [NEW] no more "open as root" contextual menu in Nautilus after Oneiric upgrade

2011-10-23 Thread Gilles Tournier
Public bug reported:

1. Ubuntu 11.10 - kernel 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 14:50:42 UTC
2011 i686
2. nautilus 1:3.2.0-0ubuntu5
3. I had this convenient right click menu "open as root" for a very long time
and I expected to keep it while uprading from Natty
4. It disappeared after completing the migration to Oneiric...there does'nt
seem to have any way to re-enable it via preferences or using gsetting.
