[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1614593] Re: gimp freezes at end of cage-base transform

The upstream bug tracker changed from bugzilla.gnome.org to
gitlab.gnome.org. All those recent Expired changes are bogus.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1690544] Re: include proper fix for CVE-2007-3126, released in GIMP 2.8.22

2017-05-13 Thread Michael Schumacher
As I wrote in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=773233#c2
(that's the bug for the master branch, where GIMP 2.9.x is being made
from), I could not reproduce the crash mentioned in the CVE. Probably no
surprise, given that CVE was reported against GIMP 2.3.x

However, I'd like to stress that this bug might have been fixed a lot
earlier if any of the downstream vendors who noticed it had reported it
upstream. Please make sure that every non-Ubuntu-specific bug in
Launchpad has a corresponding upstream bug report (adding a reference to
thess is what the "Also affects project" link is for), or that an
upstream report is made if you can't find one.

Bug description:
The following bug was reported at:

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781803

I just installed the latest Lubuntu (17.04) and installed the latest standard
GIMP in my repositories (2.8.20-1).
  The Layers/Channels/Paths/Undo/Brushes/Patterns/Gradients combined dock (
Whew! - is there a shorter name for this initially standard opening combo
dock?)
was so far to the right on my screen that I had to snag it with Alt-Drag (see
screenshot).
I am using the proprietary NVidia 304 package (which I have been
automatically installing since (so far) Nouveau always manages to crash
something I try to use; I have not actually tried it yet with the new Lubuntu,
I suppose I ought to try one day...), and my monitor is set to a resolution of
1792x1344 (where DO they get these wierd coordinates?)
Since GIMP remembers window placement between sessions, and I moved the
window/dock so that it was entirely visible, this is obviously no longer a
problem,
but it would look bad for a new user of GIMP, and not everyone knows about
Alt-Drag to lasso straying windows...

was curious if this was a Lubuntu- or Ubuntu-only bug, as he had not
encountered it.

I was going to report it at https://bugs.launchpad.net/lubuntu/+filebug
but the only "Project:"s that one can select are "Lubuntu Artwork", "...
Software Center",
"... next", "... Tweaks", "LxFind", and "LxScreenshot", in none of whose
categories GIMP belongs, so I am "ubuntu-bug"ing it here...

If any Ubuntu or Lubuntu users have either experienced this, or want to
install it and see if
it happens for them, Michael and I (and probably others) would be interested
in knowing about it.

  To reproduce:

  1. Open GIMP 2.8 on a computer running Ubuntu (the Rearing release)

  2. Create a new image in GIMP

  3. Use the "File/Export" menu option to save a .png of the image to
  the Desktop folder

  4. Open the Dash File Lens and search for the file you have just
  saved.

  Current incorrect behaviour:
  - The file does not appear in the Dash

  Desired correct behaviour:
  - When the File Lens is opened, the file that has just been saved from GIMP
should appear at the front of files under the 'Recent' category header. It
should also be possible to search for the file and find it in the Dash.

Notes: This is probably an issue with Zeitgeist logging of GIMP events

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1614593] Re: gimp freezes at end of cage-base transform

2017-03-15 Thread Michael Schumacher
The fix is rather easy: get the package maintainer to build GIMP 2.8
against GEGL 0.2, just like upstream does it.

The "fix released" is for GIMP 2.9 (the current development version)
with GEGL 0.3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1649428] Re: Cannot open file from https location (URL)

2016-12-14 Thread Michael Schumacher
Might be missing SSL support in some library or tool, or a failure to
access that particular server - the file-uri plug-in can be built to use
through gvfs, libcurl or wget, cf.
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/tree/plug-ins/file-
uri/Makefile.am?h=gimp-2-8#n26

My bet for the Ubuntu packages is on gvfs, as the gimp package doesn't
seem to have a dependency on libcurl or wget. I'm not running Ubuntu and
thus can't check, though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1614593] Re: gimp freezes at end of cage-base transform

2016-09-18 Thread Michael Schumacher
So...

Discovering that Debian and/or Ubuntu decided to make their GIMP 2.8
packages depend on gegl-0.3 instead of gegl-0.2 came as a surprise to
some of the GIMP developers.

We prefer not to raise library dependencies in the stable branch, and
have certainly not planned for changes in GIMP code to accommodate for
this in the stable branch - as you can see, the patch author for the fix
in the GIMP master branch isn't sure if the patch can be backported to
be compatible with both gegl-0.2 and gegl-0.3:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770848

This makes this hard to fix from our side for distros that choose to
deviate from the upstream dependencies.

Can I assume that Ubuntu tries to fix this for their package, based on
the patch(es) proposed in this bug report?

Title:
Regresson: Unable to import WMF images into GIMP, or convert them
  using wmf2xxx

Status in gimp package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have put the package on this bug as GIMP, but seeing the range of
problems (described below), it is probably something else.

  SUMMARY:

  1. In Lucid 10.04, GIMP would flawlessly import WMF files.

  2. Starting Maverick 10.10, it would not work.

  3. There was, at least, a work-around, in that the tools wmf2xxx could
convert the files into a different format (e.g. EPS), which GIMP could
  import.

  4. But with Precise 12.04, even that work-around fails.

  MORE INFORMATION:

  * When trying to open a file with GIMP, GIMP incorrectly recognises
the WMF dimensions as having dimensions of -1x-1 (see attached screen-
shot), and having negative X and Y ratios. GIMP will allow you to
correct the width and height, but not the resolution, making importing
  impossible.

  * wmf2xxx fails with error code 1 but no error message.

  * convert (from ImageMagick) fails with error code 1 and the message:
  failed to scan file `t2.wmf' @ error/wmf.c/ReadWMFImage/186.

  * Surprisingly, Libre Office Writer and Draw are able to import WMF
files. Unfortunately, Libre Office crops the images, so that they
  anyway cannot be used.

This regression has been hanging around for 19 months, and really
needs fixing. The only remaining work-around is to either boot into
Windows or run 10.04 in a virtual machine, neither of which is an
  acceptable solution.

  2. Create a new image.
  3. Select Alignment Tool.
  4. Click on image.
  5. Close image.
  6. Select 'Align right edge of target' from tool options.

The problem seems to be that Alignment Tool options are activated
(unghosted) at step 4, but don't get disabled (ghosted) again at step
  5.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1603321] Re: Config directory ~/.gimp-2.8 should be ~/.config/gimp-2.8

2016-07-15 Thread Michael Schumacher
The location has been changed in the current development branch (2.9)
and this change will be in the 2.10 stable release.

If Ubuntu doesn't want to be inconsistent with every single piece of
GIMP docs, tutorial, hint, message, post, ... concerning the location of
the profile directory for 2.8, I'd suggest to leave this as-is for now.

It will be hard enough to communicate the change alongside a release
that is explicitly changing the profile directory location.

Ubuntu 14.04 x86-64, gimp 2.8.10-0ubuntu1 (from official repo).

  Steps to reproduce:
Go to "Edit" -> "Preferences" menu -> choose "Default Grid" -> change
"Spacing" -> click "OK". If grid is not enabled, go to "View" -> "Show Grid"
menu and check it to show grid. The grid spacing / cell size is equal to old
settings, not to new after changes. Only if I close gimp and open again it
apply new grid spacing and show grid with new cell size.

  Expected:
When I change grid spacing in preferences and click "OK", Gimp should
immediate apply changes and change grid to new cell size without program
restart.

Grid Offset settings works same: can't apply without program restart.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1440449] Re: GIMP 2.8.10 bug causes severe data loss

2016-05-03 Thread Michael Schumacher

Title:
GIMP 2.8.10 bug causes severe data loss

Status in The Gimp:
  Confirmed
Status in Linux Mint:
  New
Status in gimp package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The current version of GIMP in the repository used by Linux Mint 17.1
is version 2.8.10. This version has an exceptionally serious bug that
can result in total loss of image data in an XCF file saved to an SMB
share. Upon saving, this bug causes GIMP to corrupt the XCF file with
added null bytes or in the worst case replace image data with null
bytes. The user is given NO hint that anything has gone wrong. If she
then closes that image file and then reopens it again, she will get
what appears to be an empty image and a message "Can't work on an
empty image, add a layer first".

This is bug 730211 on GNOME Bugzilla
  (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=730211). Contrary to the
experience of some posters in that report's discussion, this bug can
irrevocably destroy the user's data. It is therefore of critical
importance that the repository package be updated to a version of GIMP
with this bug fixed. It seems there has been a bug fix despite that
  bug report not being closed.

It seems the only reliable workaround for GIMP 2.8.10 is to NEVER save
  to an SMB share.

Gimp crashes with text tool & caps lock

Status in The Gimp:

Status in gimp package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Gimp crashes with a segfault when I use caps lock while renaming a
  layer. Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a new blank gimp document
  2. select the text tool
  3. type a couple of words of text (gimp will create a text layer above the
background layer)
  4. with the text tool still selected, click on the background layer (just to
move away from the text layer)
  5. now double click on the text layer to rename the layer (layer name gets
highlighted)
  6. press the caps lock key
  7. click on the background layer again (without renaming or doing anything to
the text layer)
Now repeat steps 5 and 6.
  Gimp crashes.

I can force this to happen every time I launch Gimp. Rebooting makes
no difference. It seems to be the second time I press caps lock that
forces the crash. I tried launching Gimp with caps lock on vs caps
lock off, but I don't believe it made any difference. I can force a
crash every time following the above sequence.

I deleted my gimp preferences folder then rebooted for good measure.
Gimp created a fresh preferences folder, but it hasn't solved the
problem. I was originally in single window mode, but the new
preferences folder put me back to multi window, but it crashes either
  way.

I ran dmesg | tail after the crash and got the following line:

  gimp-2.8[2976]: segfault at 14 ip 7ff5100e0cd9 sp 7ffef11bfcb0
  error 4 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.30[7ff51001b000+43e000]

I'm using a fresh install of Xubuntu 16.04 with nvidia 361.42 driver
(available from the Additional Drivers tab). In that same tab, I also
have enabled Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPUs. Terminal
tells me Gimp version is 2.8.16-1ubuntu1

I'm not very experienced with bug reporting and not sure what other
information I need to supply. Gimp was absolutely rock solid on this
machine with 15.10, so it may be a Xubuntu issue.

Hope someone can take a look at this. Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1540759] Re: Mouse cursor appears in the wrong position in Gimp

2016-05-03 Thread Michael Schumacher
One possible explanation is that you had the input device mode set to
Window instead of Screen - see https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-
pimping.html#gimp-prefs-input-devices

This is useful occasionally if you want to have the full size of e.g. a

Title:
Mouse cursor appears in the wrong position in Gimp

Status in gimp package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
If you take a look at this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48XLvblnz7A i show there what the
  problem is.

But i'll describe it textually here:

  What i do:
  Open any image in Gimp
Select any tool and try to work with it on the image
The cursor that is applying that tool is not where the mouse cursor of the
Operating System is

It should be noted that i'm on a dual monitor machine and that the
"fake" cursor moves slower than the real one. So it maybe related to
  that.

I am yet to find a workaround this problem (apart from opening the
window on both screens and hoping to be able to hit the right spot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 157002] Re: gimp does not works with xscanimage anymore

This should be filed as a bug in xcsanimage - most likely issue: they
have to register their plug-in as being able to work without an image
(more precisely, without a specific image type).

GIMP 2.8.10 bug causes severe data loss

Status in The Gimp:
  Unknown

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 574342] Re: GIMP set as default pdf viewer

2015-10-08 Thread Michael Schumacher
The previous comments (and linked bugs for e.g. Firefox) seem to
disagree - this appears to be due to wrong use of the file where every
application on a system is supposed to announce what mime types they can
handle.

After installing GIMP on Lucid, GIMP became the default application to
open PDF files, instead of evince. While GIMP can open PDF files, this
surely is not what most people want. Please fix this.

May be related to debian bug #525077, but I am not sure.

  In any case, /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache contains
  application/pdf=gimp.desktop;evince.desktop;

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1422136] Re: Can't change grid spacing in GIMP

2015-04-03 Thread Michael Schumacher
You have only changed the default settings that are applied to new (or
newly opened) images. For images that are already opened in GIMP, you
can change this via the Image menu's Configure Grid option. See
http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-concepts-image-grid-and-guides.html
#gimp-concepts-image-grid

Can't change grid spacing in GIMP

Status in gimp package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Can't change grid spacing in GIMP without program restart.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 713426] Re: Splash screen inconsistent with other Ubuntu applications

This is as easy or as hard as ensuring that the following parameter is

When launched, GIMP is presenting a splash screen. This is very
untypical Ubuntu behaviour, as LibreOffice is the only default Ubuntu
application also showing a splash-screen - that bug reported here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/711035

Splash screen should be removed. Cursor loading icon is enough
  information for the end-user.
