[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1306098] [NEW] Volume turns up upon connecting USB webcam

2014-04-10 Thread Tom Slominski
Public bug reported:

Hi. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 (fully updated) on my System76 Gazelle
Professional (version 7) laptop. I recently noticed that after
connecting a USB webcam (Bus 003 Device 008: ID 046d:081b Logitech, Inc.
Webcam C310) while outputting sound via the sound output jack (VIA
VT1802, Green Headphone Out, Front) at the side ramps up the volume of
the output. For example:

1) Connect speakers via the output 3.5mm jack and play some music on either a
distinctly low or high volume.
2) Connect a USB webcam.
3) Sound volume is set to 56 (as per alsamixer).

This happens both when the volume is lower and higher than 56. After
disconnecting the webcam, the volume doesn't return to normal. You can
imagine this is particularly annoying when using headphones!

If you want any other information, please do ask.

X server segfaults on pointer movement

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Hello. After yesterday's upgrade, X no longer works. What happened
during the upgrade (dpkg.log): http://paste.ubuntu.com/831823/ and
what is happening now (Xorg.0.log): http://paste.ubuntu.com/831824/ It
appears that the X server can't handle pointer events, so it crashes.
What I expected to happen was that I move my mouse, and the pointer
  moves.

Everything worked fine before the update. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10.

Title:
  Screenshot area is greyed out

Status in “gnome-screenshot” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hi. I've got a funny issue here that I cannot quite describe.
Sometimes, when I want to take a screenshot (using the built in
screenshot tool or an external screenshot tool like Screen Cloud) the
  screen just blanks out.

gnome-screenshot produces a fully grey image (will attach). I expect
it to take a full screen image of my desktop.

Using the select area and screenshot tool of Screen Cloud used to
grey out the entire screen and only show the shadow of the
notification bar, but I've since reinstalled Ubuntu and now it greys
out everything apart from the notification bar and the dock at the
side. I will attach a photo of this, since I obviously cannot take a
screenshot of this behaviour. Interestingly, the first time it
happened on this new installation of Ubuntu, it blanked out most of
what I described above apart from about half an inch from the bottom
of the screen, just enough to show a part of the Chrome downloads bar.

This happens seemingly at random, and then stays like this until I
reboot. As I said, this happened across two installations (12.04
upgraded to 12.10 and later to 13.04 and a fresh 13.04 installation),
so this is likely a problem with my hardware. I will attach
  appropriate information momentarily.

  gnome-screenshot:
Installed: 3.6.1-0ubuntu2
Candidate: 3.6.1-0ubuntu2
Version table:
   *** 3.6.1-0ubuntu2 0
  500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring/main amd64 Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Also, in an attempt to fix this I've asked about on Ubuntu Forums about this
error. ibjsb4 suggested reinstalling gnome-screenshot or using Shutter, but
neither of these suggestions helped. He also suggested running gnome-screenshot
from terminal, but that just takes a grey screenshot as normal and doesn't
output anything in the terminal.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1194509] Re: Screenshot area is greyed out

2013-08-23 Thread Tom Slominski
Also, right now I tried to take a screenshots and I get the same
symptoms as I first described but now I'm getting a pitch black screen,
rather than a grey one.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1208841] [NEW] Evolution freezes on 'retrieving message'

2013-08-06 Thread Tom Slominski
Public bug reported:

Hi. I'm running Evolution 3.6.4 on Ubuntu 13.04. Sometimes it decides to
do the following operations:

Saving user interface
Retrieving message
Unknown background operation

This results in the main Evolution window freezing. Items from the menubar
(file etc) are still accessible and work. However, clicking on things like
email messages and folders has no effect. I still receive email messages over
IMAP when they are sent to me. The 'Unknown background operation' repeats
itself until evolution is specifically killed using signal 9. Clicking the
close button or selecting close from the Unity quicklist doesn't close
Evolution. This either happens while browsing emails, or even when Evolution is
just left running in the background. I'll attach logs and a screenshot which
will illustrate what happens momentarily.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1186641] Re: X server freezes on connecting second screen

2013-06-06 Thread Tom Slominski
Any timeframe? I'd like to reinstall Ubuntu soon, so I'd prefer to try
xorg-edgers on a throwaway install, but I can only wait a few
days/weeks.

Title:
X server freezes on connecting second screen

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
Hi. I use a DVI - HDMI screen to connect my external monitor to my
laptop. Sometimes, instead of creating another workspace and filling
both of the screens, Ubuntu just puts the image from my laptop screen
half and half between my laptop and second screen, and if cable is
left connected for more than a few seconds, freezes the X server. I am
still able to move my mouse, however clicks have no effect on it.

Today, I tried connecting my second screen and the first image split
between two screens like described above. I quickly disconnected it
and plugged it back in again, to find that the same thing happened.
Upon the third try, I left it in a bit longer and the X server froze
  like described above.

How long it takes to get into raring is another question...

I see. I can't really test in on this machine then. I guess I'll have to
wait until Saucy comes out for real.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 969513] Re: Nautilus bookmarks are not updated after username change

2013-03-30 Thread Tom Slominski
I wasn't able to reproduce the bug on Ubuntu 13.04. However, I had to
use 'sudo usermod -m -d /home/user2 -l user2 user1' instead of the GUI,
since Ubuntu 13.04 no longer includes a GUI for changing the username.

Nautilus bookmarks are not updated after username change

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hello. After I installed my system, I realised that I set the username
to laptop and called my machine tom. This annoyed me greatly, so I
changed it using gnome-control-center. Later, I realised that when
trying to open folders like Pictures and Videos by searching in
the Unity dash, I would get an error similar to Could not find
/home/laptop/Pictures. I expected the Unity dash to open my Pictures
folder. To fix this, I edited the file /home/tom/.gtk-bookmarks so
  it reads:

  file:///home/tom/Documents
  file:///home/tom/Music
  file:///home/tom/Pictures
  file:///home/tom/Videos
  file:///home/tom/Downloads

  instead of:

  file:///home/laptop/Documents
  file:///home/laptop/Music
  file:///home/laptop/Pictures
  file:///home/laptop/Videos
  file:///home/laptop/Downloads

Obviously, this should've been done by gnome-control-center. After 3-4
years of using Linux it took me a while to work out how to fix this,
and an average user definitely would not know what to do in this
  situation.

file:///home/laptop/Videos
file:///home/laptop/Downloads

Obviously, this should've been done by gnome-control-center. After 3-4
years of using Linux it took me a while to work out how to fix this, and
an average user definitely would not know what to do in this situation.

Title:
Nautilus bookmarks are not updated after username change

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Hello. After I installed my system, I realised that I set the username
to laptop and called my machine tom. This annoyed me greatly, so I
changed it using gnome-control-center. Later, I realised that when
trying to open folders like Pictures and Videos by searching in
the Unity dash, I would get an error similar to Could not find
/home/laptop/Pictures. I expected the Unity dash to open my Pictures
folder. To fix this, I edited the file /home/tom/.gtk-bookmarks so
  it reads:

  file:///home/tom/Documents
  file:///home/tom/Music
  file:///home/tom/Pictures
  file:///home/tom/Videos
  file:///home/tom/Downloads

  instead of:

  file:///home/laptop/Documents
  file:///home/laptop/Music
  file:///home/laptop/Pictures
  file:///home/laptop/Videos
  file:///home/laptop/Downloads
