[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1412520] Re: eog crashed with SIGABRT in __assert_fail_base()

2015-05-29 Thread JC
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1303855 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1303855

I believe to be affected by this bug as well but it is duplicated to a private
bug. How can I be notified of the status / work around?
Here's what I get when running eog on a specific image. It is consistently
reproducible.

$ eog /media/vm/SharedFolder/DSC_0036_LR.jpg

Aborted (core dumped)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1322232] Re: wrong margins on HP photosmart 5520 printer

2014-10-11 Thread jc
I have a similar problem: The printer is an HP Officejet Pro L7600,
which used to work fine on an earlier Ubuntu. But when I upgraded to
the latest xubuntu (LTE 14.04), the pages all have a blank margin about
1.3 or 1.4 cm wide, and the text in that area (title, page number, date,
etc.) in blank. The titles at the top typically have the bottom of
descenders in letters like 'p', 'q', and 'y', showing that the text was
placed correctly in PDF/PS, but the top parts of the letters are
erased by something.

I've poked around in all the config stuff I can find, and done a bit of
googling, and found comments about the problem on several forums, but as
here, I've found no answers. The fact that the printer printed in the
margin area (up to about 2 cm from each edge) proves that it's not the
printer's fault.

Anyone have a clue for how to fix it?

Title:
wrong margins on HP photosmart 5520 printer

Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, hplip package 3.14.3-0ubuntu3

With the hplip Ubuntu package, when printing with any A4 paper size
(A4 / A4 small margins / A4 borderless), output is cut on the edges of
the page (more than 1 cm is cut from each edge).

Using upstream hplip 3.14.4 downloaded from http://hplipopensource.com
, with A4 paper size, prints as expected : margins are only a few
millimeters wide, and apps don't try to print within these margins.

Test case : remove printer from CUPS, setup printer with hp-setup then change
paper size with CUPS, open LibreOffice, select printer and page size in
printer settings dialog, set margins to the lowest allowed value in format
page page margins, print page.
Tried with other apps than LibreOffice too.

After reviewing a few bug reports about margin issues with hplip, it seems
the timeline for this problem is the following :
  - margins were wrong in the ppd files from the original upstream packages
  - Debian and Ubuntu included a patch to alter page size in the ppd files
  - upstream fixed the margins size bug, thus causing a regression in Debian
and Ubuntu packages
  - Debian fixed their patch to work with the fixed upstream release
[https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=655106#52]
I'm not sure whether the fixed Debian patch has been ported to Ubuntu. I
tried comparing the patches in the sources packages
hplip_3.14.1-1.debian.tar.xz from Debian, and
hplip_3.14.3-0ubuntu3.debian.tar.gz from Ubuntu, and it seems that the patches
are the same now, so maybe that problem has nothing to do with my bug.

I can add log files or ppd files if needed...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 991666] Re: VPN Connects Successfully Then Shortly Thereafter Fails

2014-07-10 Thread JC
Hi everybody,

I have the exact same symptoms on 14.04 with a PPTP VPN.

I have a very strong feeling this is related to custom routes. I can initiate
the VPN and have it working (had it up for at least 15min without problems),
but as soon as I add a custom route on the command line the connection drops
after a couple of seconds. Also, when entered in the VPN/Settings gui, the
connection drops shortly (seconds) after intiation.
Is there some conflicting process which stumbles over the custom route? Perhaps
dhclient or pptp itself?

So, for now, VPN is unusable to me as I need a custom route. Bummer.

I have this several times after boot as well, really annyoing.
If there is really no functional problem afterwards, perhaps the recurring
error messages could be suppressed?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 983291] Re: Screen Rotation options only Counterclockwise Clockwise

2012-11-22 Thread JC
I can confirm the same problem on ubuntu 12.10 on a Macbook 2,1.
It works when mirroring, however.
From what I read on the internet, there is no Ubuntu 2D in 12.10, so that
work-around will not work any more.

I see this has low priority, but this seems fairly fundamental to me,
since I know many people who use more than one screen at work.

Regards.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 519935] Re: unable to eject cd-rom after burning disk

2012-10-20 Thread JC
This has been an issue for me for a long time. I get an error, after burning an
.iso image, that the disc is unable to eject. If I click cancel, the burning is
ruined. If I eject manually, then click cancel, all is good. I do not recall if
I ran into this issue in Ubuntu 10.04, but I have run 10.10, 11.04, 11.10,
12.04, AND 12.10 and all have the problem.
I run arch linux on my laptop and I have absolutely no problems with brasero.
There must be something wrong on the ubuntu or debian end of brasero.

Bug description:

I used Software Center - Get Software - For Purchase and bought
Ricks Wallpapers for $1.00 USD. The purchase process went fine, but
the install failed, and has now left my apt cache in a bad state.

After the purchase process, Software Center spun its wheels for a very
long time (several minutes) until finally a popup error window
  delivered this error:

  W: Failed to fetch

  cks-wallpaper/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz Proxy

   aborted
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones
used
   instead.

'sudo apt-get update' also fails with the same error message.

The problem apparently occurs because of my apt-cache-ng proxy setup (which
works fine otherwise). I have a one line file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01proxy:
 Acquire::http { Proxy http://my.proxy.host:3142;; };

If I disable my apt proxy by commenting out the Acquire line, then I
am able to install Ricks Wallpapers from Software Center. And 'apt-
get update' then yields only Ign https://...ricks-wallpaper...; (no
error). But then even after having successfully installed the
package, re-enabling my proxy Acquire line causes 'apt-get update' to
fail with the same error above.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: thunderbird

  Dear Developers,

With Ubuntu Accessibility list I sent following letter this day morning:
This day morning in Lucid security unfortunately original Thunderbird
version is upgraded with 3.1.7 release my Lucid system.
With Orca 2.30 version this change resulting very slow list navigation
with mail folders, similar with Maverick original Orca 2.32 version if
an inbox folder have relative lot of messages.
If a folder have lot of messages, for example the focusing, navigation
operations is very slow after upgrade.
Another problem: if I choosing an email message, unable to read the
message body without not try jumping the caret with Tab or Shift+Tab
key. I not using present messages with new tab option.

See following bug, with partialy fixed the slowest list navigation
problem under Orca git master version to see what performance related problem
we seeing with Orca and Thunderbird 3.1.7 release:
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633104

I absolute agree the security upgrades is very important, but this
change now kill Thunderbird accessibility. Prewious oldest awailable
Thunderbird 3.0.10 version is works fine with Lucid before this upgrade and
wonderful usable with all tasks.
I known, Mozilla changed the products supporting model and your work is
absolute not easy, because you need following the upgrades. But if now
happened this problem, what will be happening for example with Firefox 4
  upgrade?
Before I do upgrade, I forgot hold Thunderbird related packages
  (thunderbird, thunderbird-gnome-support, thunderbird-locale-en,
thunderbird-locale-hu). What place I possible download this latest 3.0.x
awailable packages source to undo this upgrade?

Or this is not possible, what will be happening for example the Lucid
LTS release to we get back Thunderbird accessibility support?

Have you got an ydea how can possible fix this bug for example an LTS release?
Compatibility purpose not possible do an alternative package the prewious
good working Thunderbird 3.0.10 release if the main version is upgraded with
full newest upstream version, for example:
  thunderbird-3.0.10
  thunderbird-3.0.10-gnome-support
  thunderbird-3.0.10-locales

This is important the Mozilla products, because another components are
not rolling updated, for example gnome-orca package is not updated
when a new upstream release is released, and for example if the
Mozilla products is upgraded with newest upstream releases, possible
oldest awailable Orca version not perfect handling with some
components, this is important with accessibility.

  Attila

Bug description:
   10.10 SRU
I'm requesting a backported fix for 10.10's gnome-power-manager based on the
menu leak I found in 11.04. It's a simple one-line change, only affecting
gnome-power-manager (rather than fixing root cause in libappindicator, because
that potentially may adversely affect consumers that worked around it, though
we know of none).

gnome-power-manager is seemingly the worst offender, so it gets
special treatment. Test case right below. Watch memory use for a
bit. It may go up for a few minutes, but then stabilizes.

Debdiff to follow, it's already been uploaded to maverick-proposed.
  ===

TEST CASE: (at the beginning because it's a long post):
  1. Monitor the output of the command for a few hours
    $ watch -n1 'grep heap -A11 /proc/$( pidof gnome-power-manager )/smaps'

  VERIFICATION SUCCEEDED:
  - Memory usage is stable over time

  DESCRIPTION:
  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

gnome-power-manager (2.30.0-0ubuntu1) seems to have a memory leak my
machine running Lucid. I witnessed it using up to 120MB in the RES
column according to top. My machine is 64 bit and is connected to a
APC uninterruptible power supply. I haven't yet tried unplugging it
to see if the UPS is somehow related to this problem. Another person
reported a similar problem in bug #196688 comment 25. Opening a new
bug seemed like a good idea since that bug was fixed 2 years ago.

Here is some information for what gnome-power-manager looks like after
running for a long period of time (from /proc/`pidof
gnome-power-manager`/smaps):
  0147b000-0881 rw-p 00:00 0

I rebooted my machine and let it sit at the login screen. I logged via ssh
and found that gnome-power-manager was using the following:

I logged out of my ssh session and didn't touch the machine until 5 and 1/2
hours later---and I logged in again remotely with ssh to check on
gnome-power-manager and found:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

  SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be
clones of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any
  graphics card: ATI, nVidia, Intel...

  WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog.
The panels will automatically respawn correctly.

  WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel
(not icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel
orientation to Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my
case all icons are displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

  WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-
add them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

  WORKAROUND 4:

Right click the Gnome panel, click on Properties, Check Add Hide
Buttons. and Close. Enough for now. If the error runs to lower
  panel, repeat the steps.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: notify-osd

  I'm using pidgin-libnotify and I discovered a problem in notify-osd (maybe a
design problem, not sure).
When a buddy writes me a lot of lines (say 25) all messages are queued and
showed in the bubbles. Every bubble stays there for 7 seconds. 7*25=almost 3
minutes.

What happens is that if any other contact writes to me, the bubbles
are scheduled too! And also the notifies sent through notify-send
  are.

(Instead volume notifies are displayed below.)

This is a problem, because it seems that an application can bring the
  monopoly of the notification bubbles.

cause it to ignore Pango markup in its input. I frequently want to
use Zenity to display output from scripts, and I shouldn't have to
worry about whether the text has things like ampersands in it.

(This is particularly annoying, because instead of failing to run when
given incorrect input, Zenity will silently default to All updates
are complete, but that's another bug.)

  I know that I can pipe into zenity --text-info, but that's a
workaround, and I don't particularly want to confuse the user by
presenting them with a text entry dialog when I just want to display
  some status information.

Some sort of --ignore-pango flag for Zenity would be great.

  System release:
  Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
  Release: 8.04

  Package version:
  2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.3

  steps to reproduce:

(1): open yelp, type man mp3info (or oggenc, or whatever other program that
is not installed). you will get an error message (saying that the URI is
invalid, which is a different bug)
(2): do not close yelp. Install the package with apt-get or Synaptic
(3): try man mp3info on the command line; works as expected
(4): retype your search request in yelp; you still get the error message

  expected behaviour:

yelp should find man-pages regardless of when (relative to yelp's
startup) they were installed. This could be solved by reloading the
manpage database before giving up on a manpage search.

I've set up several machines running Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 which are
integrated in an Active Directory Network (ADS) controlled by a Windows Server.
I did this using samba and winbind, and now these machines can be used with
local and domain accounts (domain accounts are not listed in /etc/passwd but
are managed by winbind).
To allow some domain users to gain administrative privileges I added them
manually to the admin group with 'adduser'. After that, if you use System -
Administration - Users and Groups to add a new user or delete an existing one,
all the domain users (not local users) which were granted admin rights will
lose their privileges. This happens because they are deleted from the admin
group in /etc/group.
The problem does not occur when using the command line utility (adduser).

partition, the first time the usage column is correctly shown. When I
hit Refresh in the DUA, the usage column turns to -.-% for all entries
except the folder I told it scan which reports 100%.

See the attached screenshot (folder names blurred).

When I hit refresh I expect the Usage column to reflect the new usage.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Scan a folder (eg. Scan Filesystem).
  2) Click Usage to sort (ascending, arrow down).
  3) Click Refresh.

  What should happen:

  4) Usage column displays correct percentages.

  What actually happens:

  4) Usage column is filled with -.- %.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open a new terminal.
  2. seq 1 500
  3. Go full-screen (F11)
  4. Make a new tab (Ctrl-Shift-T)
  5. Go back to normal (F11)

  Actual result:

Lines 463-500 are lost forever -- they're not in the scrollback
buffer, missing from a copy-paste, etc.

Full screen is just the most drastic; the problem occurs whenever you
increase the terminal size. The critical factor seems to be creating a
new tab. This might be the same as

  Binary package hint: network-manager

  Ubuntu: 9.04

I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my lenevo T61. I am using a mobile
broadband card (Sierra Wirelss Aircard 880) to connect to the mobile broadband
network.

In Ubuntu 8.04 it was working fine by using the NetworkManager. I only
had to remove the APN setting in the Advanced Settings of the
Connection to get it working. See also attachment nm-ppp-
  ubuntu8_10.log)

Now in Ubuntu 9.04 - in completely fresh installation - I cannot
connect anymore to my mobile operator. (see attachment nm-ppp-
  ubuntu9_04-org.log)

First I guessed that the following warning was the reason for the
  problem:

   log-extract start
--
** (process:19537): WARNING **: Could not get secrets: Rejected send message,
7 matched rules; type=method_call, sender=:1.223 (uid=0 pid=19537
comm=/usr/sbin/pppd nodetach lock nodefaultroute debug )
interface=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.PPP member=NeedSecrets error
name=(unset) requested_reply=0 destination=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager
(uid=0 pid=19390 comm=NetworkManager --no-daemon ))
Unable to obtain CHAP password for gprs on UMTS_CHAP_SRVR from plugin
   log-extract end
---

Therefore I was trying to modify the dbus rules for the NetworkManager
in the file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf. I was removing
  the following section:

   config start

   deny send_destination=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager
send_interface=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.PPP/
   config end
-

This actually helped to get rid of the above mentioned warning. But still
without success to connect to my mobile operator. In the log files I can now
see that the connection is suddenly aborted in the IPCP negotiaten phase.
Actually, no IPCP Response is received at all. (See attachment
nm-ppp-ubuntu9_04.log). The same actually happend also without the above
mentioned fix of the dbus rules.

My knowledge about the PPP Protocol is very limitted so I do not have
any idea how to go on from this point. So any help is very much
  appreciated.

The log files were captured using the procedure described in the wiki
for Network Manager, but with additional PPP debug information.

Bug description:
Every time I resume from standby or hibernation NetworkManager does
not reconnect to my previously connected wireless network.

  Network is protected with WPA2.

when this happens syslog logs several lines like this one:
wlan0: RX deauthentication from [AP MAC ADDRESS] (reason=7)

When this happens I still can see other networks but mine with
NetworkManager and can connect to them. Mine is even not listed in the
  available networks list.

To get back functionality I have to remove the driver with modprobe -r
iwl4965 and then load it again.

  uname is: 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP
  wpasupplicant: 0.6.0+0.5.8-0ubuntu2
  NetworkManager: 0.6.6-0ubuntu5

This is a regression since with Hardy vanilla this bug did not exist.
It has been introduced by some update after May 22.

  Binary package hint: network-manager
(Hardy, up-to-date at the moment, last week of Mars 2008.)

  Hello!

I've been traveling last week and I stayed at a hotel that had WiFi. I
noticed a weird problem. The access points had ESSIDs containing
French diacritics—Hôtel de la Gare 1, etc. (it was a French
  hotel)—and I couldn't connect to them using nm-applet.

In fact, nm-applet didn't display those ESSIDs at all. The problem
might be with wireless-tools or with the driver, though: I've had time
to do a bit of looking around. I used iwlist scan to check what was
going on, and it turns out that it could see the access points, but
the 'ô' character in the ESSID was displayed with an unknown code-
point symbol. However, my terminal is correctly configured to UTF-8
(I can type the character, and 'cat'ing Unicode files with 'ô' works
correctly), so I suspected some encoding problems.

I did some logging (I'll attach the files next), which included
redirecting the output of the scan to a file. If I open the file with
Geany it detects the encoding as ISO-8859-1. I imagine iwlist (or
maybe the driver or some other component) doesn't do some charset
conversion it should do at some point. (Note that Windows laptops in
the same room could detect, display and connect to the APs.)

I could connect to the network by using iwconfig ap [address]
iwconfig essid any, so the APs were probably working correctly.

This should be easy to test by setting the ESSID of your access-point
to Hôtel (encoded in various charsets, at least ISO-8859-1). Note
that the first file I attach was obtained by simply redirecting output
of commands while I was typing. So it should contain exactly the bytes
  outputed by the applications.

(There are two attempts at connection in the log, the first time I
mistakenly connected to another AP I didn't have access to. There's
some screwing around with dhclient, too.)

  1. Open a terminal and run 'top' on it sorting the processes by memory
  usage ('M').

  2. Set gnome-power-manager to aks what to do when the power button is
  pressed.

  3. Press the power button.

  4. The ubuntu logout dialog will appear.

  5. Either hit the Escape key or the Cancel button to dismiss the

  6. You'll see that the gnome-session process has grown ~4 Mb of RSS

  Description of Problem:
On a default installation, Nautilus tries to open a PSD (Photoshop Document)
file with Image Viewer (Eye of GNOME). Unfortunately, Image Viewer does not
support PSD.

  Steps to reproduce the problem:
  1. Get a PSD file. Alternatively, you can create a new one with The GIMP.
  2. Open a file browser window and go to the folder with the PSD file.
  3. Double-click on the PSD file.

  Actual Results:
The wait cursor shows up for about 15 seconds, then nothing happens.

  Expected Results:
The file should be open by an application supporting the PSD format, like The
GIMP.

  How often does this happen?
  Always.

  Additional Information:
This issue is easily fixed by going in the Properties of a PSD file, then
setting the right application in the Open With tab.

That said, the user should not have to correct the association
manually on his shiny, new installation of Ubuntu. The default file
association for PSD should be The GIMP.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 156073] Re: Disabling gdm-login kills X instantly

2012-03-10 Thread JC Hulce
This bug has been marked as Fix Committed for over a year. If the fix
has made it into Ubuntu, please mark this bug as Fix Released. If the
fix has been released upstream, but not Ubuntu, create a new bug asking
for the new version and tag it with upgrade-software-version. If this
bug has not been fixed anywhere, change the status back to Confirmed.

  Disabling gdm-login kills X instantly

Status in The Gnome System Tools:
  Won't Fix
Status in “gnome-system-tools” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: system-services

Using systemAdmin/services, if you disable gdm, the X-server is killed
instantly, and you drop back to a console prompt.
Also if you have logged in from the console prompt -- since you disabled gdm
-- and then do a startx - because you want to test your fix...and it works, so
you want to re-enable gdm... then services tries to start a new X right away

It would be better in both cases to just change the init links,
letting the change happen on the next boot

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 899304] Re: Libreoffice writer saves page number headers in .odt and .doc formats, but not in .docx

2011-12-02 Thread JC
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity

** Description changed:

  libreoffice 1:3.4.4-0ubuntu1
  ubuntu 11.10 64bit
I saved a file in .docx format with page numbers in the header and when i
reopened the document, the page numbers were gone (but the headers spaces were
still there).
If I save the exact same document in .doc or .odt, the page number headers
are still there upon reopening the documents.
