[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1292360] Re: On reopening an odt file, random paragraphs revert to Default Style paragraph style

2014-03-15 Thread joehill
The first paragraph in this was saved as Title-lead paragraph style. I
exported it to PDF (in which it maintained this style), closed it, then
opened it, and now it looks like this, the first paragraph having
changed to Default Style. (Strangely, a header and footer also seem to
have been added.) This is just one example of what happens nearly on a
daily basis, usually with academic articles I'm writing. I don't have
any other examples for the moment because I tend to fix them as soon as
they happen but I can attach another the next time it happens.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178857] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in os::shutdown() LibreOffice crashes, then restores a backup file several days old

Thanks for following up. I've updated to the PPA version of libreoffice

happens again. I'm not sure I will locate a file that consistently

discern. I'm not sure it's every happened twice with the same document

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178857] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in os::shutdown() LibreOffice crashes, then restores a backup file several days old

2013-11-15 Thread joehill
This is STILL a problem in the most recent version of LibreOffice. The
latest time, a crash wasn't even involved. I cleanly closed LibreOffice
and restarted my computer. When I reopend LibreOffice, I got the
dialogue asking if I wanted to restore 2 files. I thought that was
strange because it hadn't crashed, but I thought maybe it hadn't closed
properly by the time the computer shut down, so I accepted to restore
the files. (On other occasions I have been smart enough to refuse to
restore files I knew I had already saved.) When the files were reopened,
they were from 3 or 4 days ago. I had successfully saved both files
dozens of times since then. (Fortunately, after thinking I had lost
several days of work, I discovered that a more recent version is still
available in the libreoffice/4/user/backup folder.)

Do I need to provide more information so this bug doesn't expire again?
It seems to me to be a critical bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178857] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in os::shutdown() LibreOffice crashes, then restores a backup file several days old

2013-11-15 Thread joehill
I should add that I reported essentially the same problem back in 2008
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/190768)
with openoffice.org and the problem is the same in libreoffice today,
except that the backups tend to be several days rather than several
hours older.

information. I've since commented out the offending line in Apport.

A few days ago while using a calc spreadsheet, LibreOffice crashed,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1154049] Re: Crashes with GLib-GIO-CRITICAL. UnknownMethod: Method DescribeAll

2013-09-17 Thread joehill
Same thing happening here. I can't get any of the parts of seahorse to
work with one another at all.

Initially, if I just boot up and then try to sign or encrypt a file
using the seahorse nautilus plugin, I see the dialogue to choose which
key to sign with, but then nothing happens. I check and see that
seahorse-daemon is running.

If I try to run seahorse (the Passwords and Keys dialogue), nothing
happens. If I kill the seahorse-daemon, seahorse will open, but then I
no keys are found if I try to use the Nautilus plugin. It says it will
now I try to run seahorse-daemon again and get the error message: No
encryption keys were found with which to perform the operation you
requested. The program Passwords and Encryption Keys will now be
started so that you may either create a key or import one. But actually
nothing happens.

Now, if I try to run seahorse-daemon manually, I get the following
message: ** (seahorse-daemon:18267): WARNING **: Could not load desktop
file '/usr/share/gnome/autostart/seahorse-daemon.desktop': No such file
or directory

So it seems it's only possible to use gnupg on Ubuntu now through the
command line.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178857] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in os::shutdown() LibreOffice crashes, then restores a backup file several days old

2013-07-05 Thread joehill
Any idea whether apport has updated for openoffice in order to complete
this bug report? I'm still experiencing this crash quite often,
sometimes several times in close succession. Lately it hasn't been
restoring an old backup file, so currently my main problem is simply the
crash.

I had forgotten to follow Christopher's suggestion but I recently
updated to Oracle Java 8 in the ppa, and I'll let you know if that helps
as a workaround.

Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178857] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in os::shutdown() LibreOffice crashes, then restores a backup file several days old

2013-05-17 Thread joehill
I've continued to experience the same crash at least once and sometimes
several times a day, although not always with faulty recovery of old
autosaved files. Please note that even though two bugs have been marked
as duplicates of this one, they're reporting on two separate problems--
one is a persistent crash (reported in this bug and in 1180244) and the
other is the fact that LibreOffice sometimes recovers autosaved files
that are several days older than the manually saved version of the file
(reported in this bug and in 1174595). This bug reports both problems
because they happened at the same time--LibreOffice crashed, which then
necessitated recovering files, although I don't imagine both problems
have the same cause.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178857] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in os::shutdown() LibreOffice crashes, then restores a backup file several days old

2013-05-13 Thread joehill
It crashed while a number of files were open and on more than one
occasion. On each occasion a different set of files is open with no
common denominator. The spreadsheet that caused the earlier crash I
reported was students' confidential grades so I can't upload that one.
But I'm attaching the file that was autorecovered even though it did not
reflect several days of writing and editing. (When it crashed it was
around 3 pages. This old recovered version is just 2/3 of a page plus a
short Zotero bibliography.)

Title:
LibreOffice crashes, then restores a backup file several days old

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I reported a similar crash 4 days ago here --
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1174595 --
but the bug was closed because Apport wasn't correctly uploading crash
information. I've since commented out the offending line in Apport.

A few days ago while using a calc spreadsheet, LibreOffice crashed,
and when I opened it again, it restored a backup file that was several
hours old. It also restored an old version of a Writer file. I closed
both and found that in both instances I had saved much more recent
  versions using ctrl-S.

Today the same thing happened, but unfortunately it was much worse,
recovering a backup file that was several days old. Because of these
frequent crashes, I've gotten into the habit of hitting Ctrl-S non-
stop, and I immediately did so and saved the document. That one move
lost me all my writing over the past 3 days, and the file immediately
synched to Ubuntu One so my own backup no longer exists.

Strangely, in the same crash LibreOffice restored the most recent
edits of another file I had recently edited. So even within the same
crash it doesn't revert all documents to very old versions.

Please fix this--I really can't use LibreOffice if the backup function
destroys my work despite my constant saving and backing up to Ubuntu
  One.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1174595] Re: Autosave recovers a backup file several hours old after Calc-related crash

I've resubmitted the same bug here through apport after it recurred:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1178857 . The
bug is definitely persistent and makes using this version of LibreOffice
very risky.

version at least 2 hours old. I closed it without saving and opened
the same file but the version I had saved myself and found the version
I had saved around 15 minutes earlier. I similarly closed another
Writer file that I discovered was missing a lot of my updates and
opened the one I had saved to disk, finding that it only lacked a
couple of my changes I had made in the past few minutes.

So the bottom line is that the autosave files were at least two hours

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1131099] Re: Can not edit or add new bookmarks/places to nautilus

2013-04-25 Thread joehill
And Ctrl-D doesn't work for me either since I upgraded to 13.04 today,
so apparently the cog is the only way to bookmark (even though it still
lists the Ctrl-D shortcut next to it).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1131099] Re: Can not edit or add new bookmarks/places to nautilus

2013-04-25 Thread joehill
Ah, I'm glad to see there is a way (the cog) to add bookmarks. If this
is how it is by design, it still seems like a HUGE usability issue that
you have to Google around to figure out how to add a bookmark, whereas
in the past there were a number of more intuitive ways to do it (drag
drop, right click, menu option). The cog is definitely not an intuitive
place for me to look.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 739184] Re: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity

2012-11-06 Thread joehill
I second that this is extremely important. In Precise, I could just
disable lo-menubar, and it made no difference that the menu appeared in
the window instead of at the top of the screen. Now I have to choose
between using keyboard shortcuts (by uninstalling libreoffice-gnome
/libreoffice-gtk) and integrating LibreOffice with my work environment,
both of which are pretty critical.

Title:
LibreOffice saves my files, next time I attempt to open them it says
  they're corrupt

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Last night I was working on several files, closed them, then attempted
to reopen them and got a dialog saying:

The file 'x.odt' is corrupt and therefore cannot be opened. LibreOffice can
attempt to repair the file.

The corrupt document could be the result of document manipulation or of
structural document damage due to data transmission.
  ...
  Should LibreOffice repair the file?
  [Yes] [No]

If I select Yes, I get another dialog saying The file 'x.odt' could
not be repaired and therefore cannot be opened. I click Ok and
another window appears saying General Error.

If I attempt to open the same file again, I get an error message
  saying:

The document 'x.odt' is locked for editing by:

  Unknown User

Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing.

If I select either of these options, it goes back into the The file .
  . . is corrupt. . . .

I can open the files just fine on AbiWord. I was also able to edit
things in LibreOffice by opening them in AbiWord then copying them
into an empty document in LibreOffice, but then when I saved, closed,
and tried to open again I got the same problem.

I also found that when I was trying to save these documents last
night, it would tell me that (I didn't write this down so I'm
constructing it from memory) it couldn't write the data due to
insufficient user privileges and that it couldn't write some xml file.
I tried to save in another folder and it worked without problems. Then
I moved it from that folder into the original folder without problems.
So there is no write permissions problem here. (I thought maybe this
was because I was writing in an Ubuntu One synched folder, but this
was only a problem some of the time and only with LibreOffice, not
  other programs.)

I just upgraded to the new LibreOffice and am having the same
problems. So I'm working with AbiWord for today and hoping I can open
  my files with LibreOffice eventually.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 960076] [NEW] LibreOffice saves my files, next time I attempt to open them it says they're corrupt

2012-03-20 Thread joehill
Public bug reported:

Last night I was working on several files, closed them, then attempted
to reopen them and got a dialog saying:

The file 'x.odt' is corrupt and therefore cannot be opened. LibreOffice can
attempt to repair the file.

The corrupt document could be the result of document manipulation or of
structural document damage due to data transmission.
...
Should LibreOffice repair the file?
[Yes] [No]

If I select Yes, I get another dialog saying The file 'x.odt' could
not be repaired and therefore cannot be opened. I click Ok and
another window appears saying General Error.

If I attempt to open the same file again, I get an error message saying:

The document 'x.odt' is locked for editing by:

Unknown User

Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing.

If I select either of these options, it goes back into the The file . .
. is corrupt. . . .

I can open the files just fine on AbiWord. I was also able to edit
things in LibreOffice by opening them in AbiWord then copying them into
an empty document in LibreOffice, but then when I saved, closed, and
tried to open again I got the same problem.

I also found that when I was trying to save these documents last night,
it would tell me that (I didn't write this down so I'm constructing it
from memory) it couldn't write the data due to insufficient user
privileges and that it couldn't write some xml file. I tried to save in
another folder and it worked without problems. Then I moved it from that
folder into the original folder without problems. So there is no write
permissions problem here. (I thought maybe this was because I was
writing in an Ubuntu One synched folder, but this was only a problem
some of the time and only with LibreOffice, not other programs.)

I just upgraded to the new LibreOffice and am having the same problems.
So I'm working with AbiWord for today and hoping I can open my files
with LibreOffice eventually.

Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 960076] Re: LibreOffice saves my files, next time I attempt to open them it says they're corrupt

2012-03-20 Thread joehill
I was able to reproduce it with this scaled-down document (I'm not
sending the original problem documents because they're unpublished
papers that shouldn't be available publicly yet). All documents work on
my other computer. I think the problem may be that for some reason
Ubuntu has created 1MB /tmp directory that has nothing to do with the
actual space on my hard drive. I'm trying unsuccessfully to get that
solved now.

But I think for the moment that the problem is not with LibreOffice
(although it may be nice to have a more specific error message, such as
that /tmp has no room on it, to help diagnose the problem, since
messages about lacking permission, file locking, and file corruption may
have nothing to do with the actual problem). I'll update if I get the
/tmp fixed and can determine whether that's the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 950794] Re: Personal settings are lost after upgrading to LibreOffice 3.5/Precise

2012-03-17 Thread joehill
I'm not advocating doing it silently. There are many packages that ask
on upgrading if the user wants to update configuration or user details
to conform with the new standard. It seems it would be relatively easy
to have a dialog that says something like This version of LibreOffice
stores user data in a different location than the one you have been
using. What would you like to do? * Leave user data where it is. * Copy
user data to the new location (~/.config/libreoffice/) * Move user data
to the new location.

Or at the very least have a warning: Warning: This new version of
LibreOffice stores user data in a different folder than previous
versions. If you would like to use your existing user data, please move
it . . . Or have a dialog come up at the first startup saying something
like LibreOffice has detected user data from a previous version. Would
you like to import that data?

In my view silently changing where data is supposed to be is as
objectionable as silently changing it to the correct location. Neither
is necessary though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 950794] Re: Personal settings are lost after upgrading to LibreOffice 3.5/Precise

2012-03-17 Thread joehill
So I know we all have opinions about this and I'm not a developer, but
in my view it's a big (not invalid) bug to make people lose their
settings on upgrading. I guarantee there are lots of users like me who
want to use their settings and don't want to spend hours Googling and
going through Launchpad to figure out how to do it--people expect to be
able to use all their applications immediately after upgrade, not to
find things broken (which losing your personal settings does--it breaks
your work flow and is as important as having other aspects of the
program work correctly).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 878061] Re: Wrong file selected from Recent Documents list in file menu

2012-03-16 Thread joehill
Thanks for checking up on this. I'm not sure it's the same problem as
the other reported bug, since that had to do with recent files not
showing up at all, and this has to do with clicking to open one file and
the file next to it in the list opening. But in any case I'm now using
3.5.0 (most recent in Precise Beta) haven't noticed it since upgrading.
I'll report if it happens again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 950794] Re: After upgrading to LibreOffice 3.5/Precise, LibreOffice stops using my personal settings

2012-03-09 Thread joehill
Isn't it still a bug if the only way to upgrade from LibreOffice 3.4 to
3.5 is to do extensive searching on-line about where the config files
go? Is this something an average user is supposed to know? I've spent
hours doing Google searches for how to migrate. Shouldn't there be some
warning when you upgrade, or perhaps some way to migrate the settings
manually?

I would think developers would want upgrading to be as transparent a
process as possible for non-technical users so people would not to have
to dig around in config files and Google just to keep using software.

Thanks for looking at the report.

I would think that would be the ideal solution (either copying or moving
or symlinking). Otherwise everyone's going to wonder where their
settings went and will waste a lot of time trying to figure out how to
fix it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 877803] Re: network-manager forgets wireless password after I cancel connection

2012-02-12 Thread joehill
I would like to add that this bug is actually much more obtrusive than
my original comment makes it out to be.

1) Any time network manager has a hard time connecting to a router--even if I'm
right next to the router and, for example, the router gets unplugged and
rebooted--it seems to think it's an authentication problem and prompts for the
password.
2) Regardless of whether I press enter to use the stored password or cancel to
wait for the router to become available, it ALWAYS not only (a) deletes the
password currently stored but (much more annoyingly) (b) sets it so that no
matter how many times I enter the password through the dialog when prompted for
it, it NEVER saves to the keyring.
3) As a result, EVERY TIME network manager has a hard time accessing the
network, I must manually go into Edit connections, locate the wireless I want
to use, click on the wireless security tab, and enter the password. This is
EXTREMELY aggravating. If I don't manually enter the password, I am prompted
EVERY time I want to use the network.

I really appreciated back in the old days when network manager just
remembered my password and only changed it I successfully authenticated
with a new one. It seems that network manager was redesigned and many of
the things that used to work perfectly no longer work.

network-manager forgets wireless password after I cancel connection

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I am using my netbook in a different room from where the router
is and have a weak connection, sometimes network-manager has a hard
time connecting and prompts me for a password, with the password field
filled with the correct password (although hidden). Normally I hit
cancel because it's unlikely to succeed, and a few minutes later I
try to connect again by clicking on my wireless network through the
panel applet. After upgrading to Oneiric, if I hit cancel, network-
manager automatically deletes the password, which is no longer to be
found in the Edit Connections dialog, so I have to go find out the
  password and enter it again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 760879] Re: Window menu is hidden

2011-10-22 Thread joehill
Thanks for the tip to uninstall lo-menubar. This solves the window menu
problem and the problem that it's impossible to access menus using Alt-F
etc., which was also making LibreOffice unworkable for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 876558] [NEW] Libreoffice search and replace window invisible

2011-10-17 Thread joehill
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to oneiric, whenever I press Ctrl-F or click on Edit -
Find in LibreOffice, no dialogue window appears, yet I can still enter a
search term (without any visual feedback) and press Enter and
LibreOffice will find the first instance of the word. Strangely, Find

then I tried LibreOffice under 2d Gnome and have the same problem

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 876558] Re: Libreoffice Find window invisible

2011-10-17 Thread joehill
Oh I see, yes there is a tiny Find Text box that appears in the upper-
right edge of one of my toolbars, but even when I click on the arrow
button to expand it, some extra functions are available but still no
text box to see what I'm searching for. So this bug seems to go back to
a design flaw. This toolbar is on the extreme right-hand side of my
screen, and there's no text box. I now see how I can move it to the left
side, in which case the text box appears. But to have it as one toolbar
among others, and to make it so the whole thing can disappear off the
edge of the screen, doesn't make any sense. Why put it in a toolbar as
opposed to (as the vast majority of applications do these days) in a
little text box in one corner of the main text area (as in Firefox or
Gedit). As-is it gets lost very easily.

Title:
  Libreoffice Find window invisible

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since upgrading to oneiric, whenever I press Ctrl-F or click on Edit
  - Find in LibreOffice, no dialogue window appears, yet I can still
enter a search term (without any visual feedback) and press Enter and
LibreOffice will find the first instance of the word. Strangely, Find
and Replace still brings up the window. Only simple Find doesn't
work correctly. I thought this was a problem with Unity's compositing,
but then I tried LibreOffice under 2d Gnome and have the same problem
  consistently.

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
For several months now (since Maverick) LibreOffice has crashed

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 852931] [NEW] No way to open docx files directly from firefox--only option to save allowed

2011-09-17 Thread joehill
Public bug reported:

According to the help page on adding download actions
(http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20file%20types#w_adding-
download-actions), if one clicks on a file type that Firefox does not
already have an action for, it will ask whether you want to Open with
an application that you specify or Save file. This happens for most
file types but for some reason not with docx. Instead firefox simply
asks where I want to save the file with no option to specify a helper
application. This makes it impossible to quickly view docx files by
opening them in LibreOffice.
