[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2038998] Re: [amdgpu] Screen corruption, distorted geometry and misplaced triangles

2023-12-02 Thread Niklas Schmelzle
The graphic glitch just happened on my system (Ubuntu 23.10, Lenovo
ThinkPad T14 Gen 2a with AMD Ryzen™ 5 PRO 5650U with Radeon™ Graphics ×
12) again. I have `COGL_DEBUG=disable-batching` set in /etc/environment.
Furthermore all extensions are deactivated (however, not deleted).
System was also rebooted.

Interestingly, this time it did not occur to an XWayland window. I
configured chrome to run wayland directly (which decreased the frequency
of the error occuring, at least it seemed like it).

Here dmesg:

[70061.823842] amdgpu :07:00.0: amdgpu: [gfxhub0] no-retry page fault

I might try to set the kernel parameter next. For clarification: I would add
amdgpu.mcb=0 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub and then run
'sudo update-grub' (or update-grub2?). Afterwards I can just reboot?

BTW, just to rule other influences out: I do hibernate my system from
time to time. This should not have any influence, or?

Installed Steam through apt from the 'mantic' repositories. Installed
Proton 8.0 and Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (Sniper) alongside two

Screen corruption (white and grey streaks) present in-game when GNOME

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1954902] [NEW] lpoptions cannot change system-wide default printer

2021-12-15 Thread Niklas Rother

According to my experimentation, this is incorrect. When lpoptions is
run as root, the file "/root/.cups/lpoptions" is updated (aka the
personal default printer of root), not "/etc/cups/lpoptions" (aka the
system-wide default printer).

I'm unsure whether this is a documentation bug or wrong behavior. I
assume the later, because there seems to be no other option to set the
system-wide default printer.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1912673] [NEW] sounds not working on Dell XPS 17 (9700)

2021-01-21 Thread Niklas
Public bug reported:

My investigation process:

Dell XPS 17 (9700) comes with Windows 10 preinstalled, where sounds
worked.

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS fresh, sounds did not work on speakers or 3.5mm
headphones,
using linux-image-5.4.0-42-generic, I did not try blutooth.

I sudo apt upgrade, dist-upgrade to get kernels

linux-image-5.8.0-38-generic
linux-image-5.8.0-40-generic

Sounds did not work.
I download linux-image-unsigned-5.10.9-051009-generic.
Sounds did not work.

I upgrade Dell XPS 9700 firmware from 1.3 to 1.63.
Sounds did not work.

After googling I found this solution in the comments:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1270442/no-sound-on-xps-17-9700

"""

Download and install dkms module:

https://launchpad.net/~canonical-hwe-team/+archive/ubuntu/pc-oem-
dkms/+packages

Alternatively, you can install linux-oem-20.04, it will install the
5.6 kernel with the above driver. Your system may be more stable with
5.4 kernel since it is in wide use.

Manually install sof-firmware from Arch Linux:

https://archlinux.pkgs.org/rolling/archlinux-extra-x86_64/sof-
firmware-1.5.1-1-any.pkg.tar.zst.html

You will need to delete the existing "sof" and "sof-tplg" files from
the Ubuntu linux-firmware package first. Note if this package gets
updated from Canoncial and they don't update these, you will have to
delete and then reextract. Files go into the /usr/lib/firmware/intel/sof
and /usr/lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg folders.

Manually install the ucm2 files:

http://xps17.ddns.net/sof-soundwire.zip

These go into /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/sof-soundwire. Delete the
contents of the existing sof-soundwire folder (if you have it) and
replace them with the ones from the archive.

Reboot. You should now have all your audio devices available. If speakers
do not play, you may need to run alsamixer (non-root) from a terminal and
unmute and set the mixer levels all the way up.
"""

This solution worked for me on linux-image-5.6.0-1042-oem AFTER manually
opening alsa-mixer and changing soundcard to sof. The sound would
otherwise just show 'dummy'.

My sounds still do not work on 5.8 or 5.10, full name listed above. I
did not get to test this temporary fix with 5.4.

Sorry my English wasn't clear on that one: I meant "should" in that it
ought to be fixed, not that it was fixed.

This is very annoying, because when the context menu appears, the

two times, you will surely perform the function of the first menu
item! Everytime I right click in desktop, i probably create a new
  Folder!

I think there maybe 2 solutions to this:
  - To perform the function of a menu item, only left click is allowed.
  - When the user right click, the context menu will appear at a bit lower
position, so the mouse will not be at the first menu item.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1740792] [NEW] Automatic login still requires user password after suspend/hibernate

2018-01-01 Thread Niklas Rosenqvist
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10
gnome-control-center 3.26.2

When I set Ubuntu to automatically login a user the user still has to
enter their password when resuming from a suspended session. The only
option I can find to fix this is to disable the lock-screen completely,
which I don't want to since I still want it to be an option to manually
lock it. Setting Privacy > Screen Lock to off doesn't affect this
behavior at all.

The solution seems to be to use dconf-editor and change
org.gnome.desktop.screensaver.ubuntu-lock-on-suspend to false. I got the

This is beyond me, so I would like some help.

Up until a software update within the last few months (maybe the
upgrade to Ubuntu 11.100, I can't remember), if I opened a PDF file in
Firefox, it would always ask, and the default aplication for that file
  type was Document Viewer.

  Now it defaults to 'gedit'.

I have tried (through 'Edit --> Preferences') setting my default
application for PDF files to 'Document Viewer', and then downloading a
PDF file to open it, but for some reason the dialog box then says
  'Open with...' and 'gedit'.

  I will attach screenshots of:

  1. Application Preferences; and
  2. Dialog box showing Open with... gedit (default).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 875676] Re: Backing up fails with 'IOError CRC check failed'.

2017-01-29 Thread Niklas Sombert
I think I've got the same problem.

DejaDup with Ubuntu 16.04 prints the same error message and even
duplicity can't do anything in the backup folder. ("remove-older-than"
fails with "(, IOError('CRC check failed
0xb1276c7b != 0x9b944aa5L',), )".)

If I delete or move duplicity-new-
signatures.20160922T090645Z.to.20160929T083644Z.sigtar.gz, it might work
again.

But this is really not good.

There is another similar bug #676767 where deleting ~/.cache/deja-dup

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1421923] Re: No notifications for new mails

2016-06-25 Thread Niklas Wenzel
Hi all,

It took me ages to reply to this thread due to very important personal
issues. Sadly, I can't afford spending time on account-polld right now
as it is too big of a project to handle for me at the moment. Sorry!

However, I have to say that I really like the long-term solution Alberto
proposed here. I'm looking forward to it being implemented some time. :)

Cheers,
Niklas

Sebastien, does the fix you mention affect the file chooser dialog?
Because that one should have some kind of menu. It took me years to

Bug description:
This was recently fixed in duplicity trunk. But I'm filing a bug for
paperwork purposes and for Ubuntu SRUs.

  [Impact]

When restarting a backup, duplicity may accidentally skip the first
65k chunk of one of the source files. This means that when it is
restored, it will be incomplete/corrupted, resulting in data loss.

Note that symptoms of this bug are diverse and may look like:
  assert len( patch_seq ) == 1, len( patch_seq )
  or
  assert first.difftype != "diff", patch_seq
  or
librsync error 103 while in patch cycle

These are all different results from this root cause. In all cases,
it is because chunks of files are missing in your backup. There is
nothing we can do to get those chunks back. But a related patch in
duplicity 0.6.23 will let you restore the rest of your files (instead
of just crashing halfway through a restore like 0.6.22 does). So try
duplicity 0.6.23 to get a little progress from your broken backups.
And use duplicity 0.6.23 for all future backups.

  [Test Case]

Download and install the 'test1.sh' file attached to this bug report, and run
it like 'sh test1.sh'. If it prints the following line, the bug is present:
Binary files /tmp/source/newfile and /tmp/restore/newfile differ

  Or, follow these manual steps:
  mkdir /tmp/source
  dd if=/dev/urandom of=/tmp/source/bigfile bs=1024 count=5000
  # This next command will intentionally fail after the second volume!
  duplicity full /tmp/source file:///tmp/backup --vol 1 --fail 2 --no-encryption
  mv /tmp/source/bigfile /tmp/source/newfile
  duplicity full /tmp/source file:///tmp/backup --no-encryption
  duplicity restore file:///tmp/backup /tmp/restore --no-encryption
  # This next line will say the files differ if the bug is present
  diff /tmp/source/newfile /tmp/restore/newfile

  [Regression Potential]

It's a relatively small patch, only affecting the specific case of
restarting a backup when the file we were in the middle of is no
longer there. I'd say minor regression potential.

I just discovered that pressing Ctrl-H in the file selection dialog
shows hidden files and directories. This should be easier though.
Excluding cache directories etc. is a normal use case.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1421923] Re: No notifications for new mails

2015-09-21 Thread Niklas Wenzel
Ok, I spent some time on replacing the golang.org/x/text package with
the packaged one from the archives today and discovered that the package
is only available for wily at the moment. Thus, I'll revert those
changes and keep its source code in place.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1421923] Re: No notifications for new mails

2015-09-18 Thread Niklas Wenzel
Hey Dan,

I didn't know about that rfc yet! Let me dig into it a big more to check
if we can support that. What I can definitely say is that we can add the
message partid to the URI. If that is helpful, this shouldn't be a
problem. ;)

The application for which the notification is being displayed is the one
which the user authorizes the online account for. What I need to check
myself is whether the URI from the notification is then sent directly to
the application or if other apps can "compete" for it as well. If the
former is true, the situation is clear. If the second one is what
happens, then the new UI you mentioned should be used automatically by
the URI dispatcher. To be honest, I'd prefer the first one as in that
case the user could simply give another application access to the
account if they wanted it to receive email notifications.

The reason why I wanted to put the app id in there was to enable
applications to filter for "their" notifications in case they want to
use different email clients for different accounts (e.g. the Gmail app
for a Gmail one and Dekko for their Yahoo account). This would only be
needed in the second case outlined above though.

I'll look into the questions brought up here. Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1421923] Re: No notifications for new mails

2015-09-18 Thread Niklas Wenzel
Wow, Alberto! I didn't expect anyone to have a look at the code that
fast!

I agree that OAuth authentication for Gmail in connection with using the
Gmail accounts plugin would be great. Having a quick look at the Gmail
docs, I also think that our IMAP library should be compatible with it.
However, as we already have working Gmail notifications using OAuth in
the images (although not open to third-party developers at the moment),
I'd like to postpone this after we have released the normal password
authentication IMAP notifications into the wild as they are supported by
basically all IMAP servers.

Furthermore, thank you for the link to the SASL plugin. As that part is
being dealt with by our IMAP library though, I don't think it will be
too useful here.

The data files you found are indeed from libraries for character
encoding. I noticed a few days ago that we can import some of the
libraries via Debian packages that are already in the Ubuntu archives so
that should reduce that part of the code.

Thanks again! :)

about 5 times until the network is finally recognized. Therefore, the
bug still remains unresolved for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1476027] [NEW] When changing a *.settings file, the libsignon-glib accounts database is not updated and still contains the old information

2015-07-19 Thread Niklas Wenzel
Public bug reported:

When developing an application, you often need to change your *.service
files. However, the ~/.config/libsignon-glib/accounts.db file is
unexpectedly not updated when you install a newer version of your app on
your device. It still holds the old information and therefore causes
huge problems as existing and newly configured accounts won't work
properly.

Finding this out costed me a few hours today!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1430769] Re: Does not detect hidden WiFi on first attempt

2015-06-08 Thread Niklas Wenzel
I don't think this is a duplicate bug as the other bug mentions some
behaviour which I do not see.

Here is the behaviour I do *not* see (copied from the other bug):

Instead of the connected icon in the top bar there's just a blank
space, the hidden network shows up in the indicator's network list
twice, and there's no check mark next to either of the entries in the
network list

Here is what I see:

Nothing happens. There is no blank space (the icon displays the state of
my mobile connection or the not connected wifi icon), nor does the
network show up in the list even once.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1354560
Indicator doesn't show connected status when associated with hidden network

Yesterday I got a popup from update-manager that shows on the
launcher how many updated packages there are available, but left-
clicking the icon didn't show the window. Alt-tabbing didn't help
either, so I closed it from the right-click menu and the next time it
showed I did get a proper popup window.

Today this happened again, so filing a bug now.

  Steps to reproduce, hastily written:

  0. (create another user account)
  1. login to my main account
  2. lock screen
  3. switch user
  4. update package lists
  5. switch back to main user

Update-manager window is shown in Launcher and Alt-Tab, but does not
appear when selected, by either means.

Closing update-manager from the quicklist, and restarting, makes a
visible window, as we've said. Also, starting the upgrade from the
quicklist worked, and the in-progress dialog appeared normally. BUT,
when the upgrade was done, and should return to the main window, that
  window was still inaccessible.

I don't know if the two-session scenario is the only way this bug
shows up, currently. I used to have this problem, under Precise, with
only one user session. But I haven't seen that behaviour in a while.

Gtk+ applications this key combination deletes the previous word
(Ctrl+W) in Bash. There's also no way for Bash to distinguish between
  Ctrl+Backspace and Backspace.

Therefore I think there should be an option to send ^W on
Ctrl+Backspace or Ctrl+Backspace should be distinguishable for Bash so
that I can bind it myself.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1310104] Re: No way to trigger fingerprint authentication on lock screen

2014-04-28 Thread Niklas Gidion
Same behaviour here, just as Rüdiger Kupper described it. I am also affected.
Everything worked beautifully with Ubuntu 13.10.
After the update to Ubuntu 14.04 (via dist-upgrade) the trouble with fprintd
and lightdm started for me.
My guess is: every person with a laptop with fingerprint-reader running Ubuntu
14.04 might be affected by this.
What could I do, what files could I provide to help solve this?

Bug description:
With fprintd/libpam_fprintd installed, the user can in all places
authenticate via the fingerprint reader. (Command line, login screen, light
locker screen). However, light locker does not interact well with fingerprint
authentication:
Immediately after locking the session, the user can unlock via fingerprint.
But once the fingerprint authentication times out, light locker waits for a
password to be typed, and the user cannot re-initiate fingerprint
authentication. The usual way of pressing ESC does not have effect. There even
is a state, where light locker does not accept fingerprint nor password
authentication -- the user is left without any possibility to unlock the
screen. This is not acceptable.
Please correct light locker's behavior with respect to libpam-fprintd
authentication.

Bug description:
When using the trackpad on the MacBook Pro In Mac OS X it is possible to have
the thumb resting (ready to click) on the bottom part of the touchpad while
moving the mouse pointer around with your index or middle finger.
Likewise it is also possible to use two finger scrolling with the index and
middle finger on the upper part on the track pad while resting the thumb on the
lower part of the trackpad.

This behaviour is not currently supported with the synaptics driver in
12.04. It wil register a two finger scroll when the thumb is resting
in the bottom part and index finger moves around in the upper part.

I have tried playing aroud with the setting AreaBottomEdge that
disables all motion on the bottom part of the touchpad. Unfortunately
when this setting is enabled it still detects a finger in the area, so
it wil register a two finger scroll like before.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1160042] [NEW] Scroll speed too fast with Mircosoft mice

2013-03-25 Thread Niklas Fischer
Public bug reported:

Ever since I use my Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000, I get
the problem, that scrolling is extremely fast after restarting the
computer after using Windows. The issue seems to be well documented, as
several other users have come across this problem [1]. The common
workaround seems to be un- and replugging the mouse's usb adaptor [2]. I
can confirm this workaround works. Another solution is offered by Paul
Richards with his resetmsmice script [3][4]. These utilities do work,
and it is less difficult to run a single sudo command than to go duck
diving underneath my desk each time I start ubuntu. According to this
[5] thread, he has also submitted a kernel patch, but it does not seem
to have made it through to me, as the problem perseveres even with
ubuntu 12.10. Is there any possibilities of adding these kernel fixes to
the kernel used by ubuntu? I have never comiled a kernel myself, but I
would gladly assist testing anything.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1077395] Re: LibreOffice writer refuses to show any dialog

2013-01-22 Thread Niklas Gidion
Exactly the same problem/behaviour here:
Sometimes (actually quite often - at one still undefinable point during every
session) LibreOffice refuses to open any new dialogue. It won't even close
anymore by means of the menu (File - Quit) - just by closing the window.
Luckily saving the document by double-clicking the small icon in LibreOffice's
status bar still works - otherwise this would be even more severe.
Closing and restarting convinces LibreOfice to work normally again for some
time - until the same problem reappears.

though I couldn't even get the game to run. Therefore I uninstalled it
and Ubuntu Software Center completed the uninstallation with no errors
reported though no files were removed.

I first noticed this because Torchlight was still in the applications
menu. So I had to manually delete it from /opt and remove the launcher
  at /usr/share/applications/. I couldn't uninstall it through apt-get
either since the package torchlight wasn't installed.

  Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
  Release: 12.04
  Package: torchlight 1.0+2012+09+18a-0ubuntu1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1034080] Re: no About menu item

2012-08-09 Thread Niklas Rosenqvist
Just to correct things. Marlin is no longer developed by the Elementary
team. The maintainer had some issues with the Elementary project and
they decided to continue the development under the name pantheon-files
instead. Pantheon-files is now a much better product than Marlin due to
a much more rapid development pace and strong leadership. So don't
consider Marlin, consider Pantheon-files.

My solution: install dconf-tools, open dconf-editor, go to

Hope this works. If not, try changing the colors of the actual terminal
and try again the dconf solution.

Worked, thanks! :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1003790] [NEW] the global menu integration disappears sometimes

2012-05-24 Thread Niklas Rosenqvist
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, without any settings being changed, the global menu
integration stops working. The only way I've found to fix it is to
remove all the configuration in ~/.mozilla/firefox. I'm running Ubuntu
12.04 x64 desktop and firefox firefox 12.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1

(p.s. I see now that there probably might be something else causing this
issue since the Unity dash doesn't open on top of windows longer either,
it's behind the open windows, and I didn't change any settings in Compiz
either)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 851055] Re: [Oneiric] 'Not Authorized' error given when mounting device

2011-12-19 Thread Niklas Vainio
I got the same problems after upgrading to Oneiric (no mount, shutdown,
suspend). For me, there wasn't the autologin line in
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf so that didn't help. I tried downgrading
lightdm to 1.0.6-0ubuntu1.1 from 1.2, didn't help. Finally I switched to
gdm.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 901196] [NEW] Eye of GNOME can't show .nef images properly

2011-12-07 Thread Niklas Rosenqvist
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10 x64
eog 3.2.0-0ubuntu1

When I open .nef images the application can only display the image in a very
small, low resolution format, just as if it loaded the thumbnail into the image
viewer instead of the proper photograph.

I first reported this in the GNOME bugtracker:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665373

There I got the reply:

Felix Riemann [eog developer] 2011-12-07 12:08:24 UTC
Well, I'd say that depends on how good you are at compiling stuff yourself.
If you're not so good at it, you should open a Launchpad ticket for libopenraw
and request the inclusion of the loader and possibly an update to the latest
package version.

Alternatively, the sourcecode to libopenraw is there:
http://libopenraw.freedesktop.org

For building you'll need at least the development packages for boost and
gdk-pixbuf installed. Then it's a standard autotools build.

Doing make install should install the loader at the right position.

Remember though that I'm not an Ubuntu user, so things might be different over
there.

But I have no idea how to do any of this since I'm just a user reporting
a bug, not an ubuntu developer.
