I also join in requesting an update of the nvidia driver 331 or better. @Jason: in theory nvidia-331-updates was supposed to be updated frequently after the Ubuntu release, whereas nvidia-331 would remain at the same version. In practice the SRU process is too slow for this, and the main reason for keeping nvidia-331-updates around, is that on development releases, after feature freeze, we can still update the nvidia driver without breaking nvidia-331. +1 for 334 in the xorg-edgers ppa, that would be extremely helpful for System76. Maxwell desktop GPUs seem to work fine with nvidia 331, but we're not yet sure about mobile Maxwell hardware. Having 334 handy in a PPA would be very helpful for testing. Sorry but 331.49 breaks hybrid graphics. We're working to track down the regression. As for 334.x, that's a short lived driver branch, and we don't plan to ship the driver (as it would bring more package migration headaches when support for that branch ends). Would it help if we simply provided a package in xorg-edgers with apt pin preferences so that, if users add the xorg-edgers repository, they would only receive updates of binary drivers (fglrx, nvidia) without pulling in anything else (X, mesa, etc.)? Not having the latest nvidia driver is silly. i.e to ship a version with known bugs in (fixed in later versions) and that don't support the latest hardware in the name of 'stability' is a bit mad - its not like you can fix the issues (its closes source..)
