Ok I figured out the problem. The volume keys on my laptop don't work
after I disconnect my laptop from HDMI. The solution that worked for me
is, I went to system settings - sound and changed the profile under
hardware tab to Analog Stereo Duplex

Now the volume keys on my keyboard work again.
