Re: XenServer 7

2016-10-18 Thread Syed Ahmed
Perfect! Thanks Paul for doing this so fast! I've had some comments on the
PR by Kaushik which I will address and a few other things that I found like
the path of some binaries changed in XS7.0. I will go through the scripts
and see if anyone is using them and will update the PR. Hopefully we can
get this done by the end of this week.

Thanks,

RE: XenServer 7

2016-10-18 Thread Paul Angus
Hi Syed,

I've added XenServer7 into our potential testing matrix, and kicked of the
smoke test suite.
The first thing that I've noticed, is that one of my two hosts hasn't
configured 'fully' - The label 'Local-Storage' hasn't changed to a UUID

I'll have some proper feedback in the morning, when the test suites have
finished...

Kind regards,

Agree with Paul. If you can point to your public repo we can collaborate
easily.

As per testing. I have manually verified the following use cases below. I
am very happy with the results so far. I will open a PR with this and we
can run regression tests. I also have qcow2 images of XenServer7 and script
to reset/reinitialize it so I will post them as well on the PR so you guys
can take them and install/test XS7

* Create a new cluster with XenServer7
* Add Primary storage: Should create an SR on XS7
* Add another XS7 host to the Pool
* Add host2 to Cloudstack
* Create VM1 from template
* Create VM2 from template
* Ping/SSH VM1 to VM2 and vice-versa
* Stop/Delete/Expunge VM2
* Create Data disk
* Attach it to VM1
* Create VM snaphsot of VM1
* Restore VM snapshot of VM1
* Delete VM snapshot of VM1
* Create Volume snapshot of Datadisk
* Create volume snapshot of Root disk
* Create new template from snapshot of root disk
* Create volume from snapshot of datadisk
* Detach datadisk volume
* Delete datadisk volume
* Aquire a public IP
* Create a static nat to VM1
* Live migrate VM1 while traffic on VM
* Delete VM1

Thanks Paul,

I am still trying to see what changes are needed. I am seeing problems when
adding an new host, sometimes the NFS doesn't get mounted. I will try to
sort these things today. I would need most of the help in testing and
making sure that we don't have any regressions. It would be awesome if you
could point blueorangutan to my branch.

That is amazing. I cannot wait to see this hit mainstream. The performance
difference in XenServer 7 is considerably different than 6.5. I have my "core
services" cluster running 7 and it works nicely. Core services like DNS, AD,
and even ACS management servers but not compute nodes.

Hi Guys,

If anyone is interested in trying this out, I have a branch [1] which I am

Hi Raja,

Can we get an answer to this? I have done some XenServer refactoring which
I wish to push upstream but if XenServer 7 integration is being pushed. I'd
like to sit on my changes in favour of getting better support for

Primarily we're awaiting thin provisioning of fiber channel SAN disks.

Hope to see it in the next release :-)

Re: XenServer 7

2016-07-13 Thread Raja Pullela
Hi Erik

BVT – build verification tests or smoke tests are the test automation scripts
we have in cloudstack repo.
We will run these tests first and see if anything is broken. For any failures,
we will create bugs.
IMO, since 4.9 is out, the next version should have the support for XS 7.0.
Are you look at anything specific feature/functionality in XS 7.0? can you
share what it is ?

Re: XenServer 7

2016-06-13 Thread John Burwell
All,

Has anyone had a chance to try XenServer 7 since it’s release? If so, does it
work? If not, how broken is it? My guess would be in agreement with the
general consensus that a change from CentOS 5 to 7 would not only be breaking,
but significant.

Thanks,

2016-05-25 Thread Syed Mushtaq
I had installed Xenserver 7 when it was still in beta. If I remember
correctly, it has a different python version than 6.5 (2.4 in 6.5 and 2.6
in 7). Some scripts had been modified to run on python 2.4 may break with
XS7. Will have to verify this.

Oh, I did know that, thanks for sharing Will.

I was reading their Release notes; it seems that their “major changes”
section does not reflect the experience you are getting.

Re: XenServer 7

2016-05-25 Thread Will Stevens
CentOS changes a LOT, especially around networking, so I would not be
surprised if it does not work. It still takes me like 20 minutes to figure
out what the hell I am doing when I login to CentOS7. No ifconfig, no
iptables, etc, etc, etc... They pretty much did a wholesale change of
everything you expect to be there.

Lots of testing will have to be done on this and I have not tried to do
that yet...

Re: XenServer 7

2016-05-25 Thread Rafael Weingärtner
Considering those scripts you are right; but, my main concerns would be
regarding some XAPI change. The scripts that we create and inject into the
Dom0 should not be that intrusive.

I do not know about the differences between CentOS 6 and 7, but the only
way I see a script stopping working is that if a program that the script
uses does not come with the CentOS 7 that is bundled with XenServer or if
that program does not work with CentOS 7 anymore.
I do not recall every single task that those scripts execute, at the top of
my memory I can say that they play with the systems' firewall. They also
mount, copy, and move some files around. I believe they also remove some
configurations from the XAPI sometimes.

Looking at the release notes in [1], it seems that none of the scripts
should stop working. However, to be sure about every single function and
task that ACS execute on XenServer a batch of tests would be required.

RE: XenServer 7

2016-05-25 Thread Paul Angus
Rafael

We don’t purely use XAPI with XenServer.
XenServer 7 has a CentOS7 dom0 rather than CentOS6. We do a whole load of
stuff behind the scenes with python and shell scripts a chunk of which won't
work anymore.
