Or maybe the service could update something to show it is still working.
e.g. touch a file after every cycle.
This could then be added as a NodePing check.

Some sort of cronjob that tests for whether a process has been running
for more than N hours or days could probably do it, yeah. We tend to get
rate-limited quite a lot due to the rather extreme size of our github
org and number of jira spaces, so this is not a rare occurrence.

README may be a hangover from a old build, which for some reason was
not removed. Note: curl -I suggests the name is README.txt
It will require Infra involvement to remove the README file, as that
is done by pubsub from the asf-site branch (which does not have such a
file)

However you could try creating a temporary README.txt file in the main
branch under static/, and when the README appears on the website, try
deleting it from static.
That might trigger deletion from the deployed site. If not, the
ghostbusters will need to be called to get rid of the phantom file.

If you are referring to README.md at
https://github.com/apache/comdev-events-site, that is not part of the
site build.
It is intended to describe how the repo is used to build the site.

Ok, now I’ve confused myself. The above two things (ie, specifically, README
and README.md) should be the same resource, but they’re not, and I’m not sure
why.

I like the design changes you’ve made, but the changes to the current event
promotion stuff (that is, the /x/ removal, and the links to how to put an event
promotion banner in your project website) are incorrect. (See my email
“Conflicting information about event promotion”, which I’m currently working
on.)

If you could drop that portion of the PR (ie, where you remove /x/ and the
.htaccess file) we can address those problems separately.

Conflicting information about event promotion

2024-04-01 Thread Rich Bowen
I was aware that there was some inconsistency in how we encourage people to
promote Community Over Code, but RedYetiDev’s PR
(https://github.com/apache/comdev-events-site/pull/12) for events.apache.org
has made me aware that there are numerous
conflicting web pages regarding how to include event promotion in your project
website.

First of all, this one is correct:

https://apachecon.com/event-images/

Then we have a variety of other ones, with varying correctness:

https://apache.org/ads/adserver.txt has correct information, and a variety of
incorrect information.

https://events.apache.org/README is almost completely wrong.

https://github.com/apache/comdev-events-site contains old information which
kind of works, but isn’t actively maintained, so will surely break at some
point.

I’m putting this here in case someone gets to this faster than I do, and so I
don’t forget.

This changes many things indeed, in general we prefer having "atomic" PRs
which change one thing only and can be reviewed in isolation. I suggest
creating separate PRs at least for the content changes vs
style/behavior/navigation changes, to make the review easier.
