Meanwhile I found http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MultiUpload

Any chance to give it a try?

It's installed now, but somewhat hidden - ie not directly linked.

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Special:MultipleUpload

I've set the file limit to 10 uploads at a time. This can be adjusted
up or down.

Added to the documented extensions here:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Wiki_maintenance/Extensions

The instructions for installing this extension detail putting the link
for the MultiUpload into the main Navigation bar on the left.
Personally, I'd like to avoid dropping it there. It should be linked
elsewhere... like direct on the Upload special page, but this would
require tweaking the raw PHP... something I'd rather not do if at all
possible. Any ideas?

It's linked on Special page "Special Pages", but restricted to sysops.
You might just change the permission requirement.

Ah, I missed that :-)

Hmmm I can see why it's restricted to Sysops. It's a potential for
abuse by the few remaining rogue spammers we have.

All of the various MultiUpload extensions I've looked at in the past
have restricted this functionality to only those users with Sysop (aka
Admin) permissions.

initially, I don't see a way to set the permissions of this extension...
might be a $wgSomething variable that can be set? Not sure yet.

My opinion:
Link to Special:Multidownload should be only visible on the normal
download page, not in the Sidebar.
"Normal users" should be able to use it without Sysop rights.

Having it in Special:SpacialPages should suffice. Adding it anywhere
else required editing PHP, or adjusting other files that may or may not
be possible in the next engine upgrade.

As far as I can tell, normal users can use it. I logged in as my test
user who has only the usual edit rights on the Wiki, and the user had
access to the UploadFiles section... even though it was a bolded item in
the Special Pages.

works like a charm :-)

Thanks for installing.
