Tour de Flex Mobile

2015-06-20 Thread George Yabra
Hi there,

Some time ago I developed a proof of concept 'Tour de Flex Mobile' app. For
health reasons I was unable to continue working on the project. That said,
I now feel better and I'm working back on it.

This time I had some more ideas for the app, for example:

RSS & Twitter Feeds
Youtube Videos
Flex Showcase
Mailing List reader (both dev and users)
Wiki
Bug Tracker
Components Explorer

These features will make the app more useful than a simple Components
Explorer App and it will be a great resource for any Flex developer, not
only the new comers.

Some of these features are still in early development and I will be working
on fine tuning them, others I'm still researching how to implement them
without performance issues.

You can test the new Tour de Flex Mobile App from this link [1]

This weekend I will commit these new changes and codebase to the flex
examples Github repo.

Feel free to share your comments and suggestions, I tried to make a very
stable release but they might be some bugs and glitches. I'm not subscribed
to the mailing list but I check it several times a day in the mailing list
archive site.

Best regards

George

Hi,

Some time ago we had a donation of a Tour De Flex style mobile app.

Amy objection if I move it from examples and place with the other Tour De Flex
applications [1] and start adding some of Adobe's donated examples to it.

Thanks,

Perfect!
I think if you can show a working code for a selected component(just like
the web\desktop based tour de flex, where in you have working component on
top and it's respective code below it), that would be of great help for
people who are new to flex. Thanks again for this great app.

Cheers!

[APP] Tour de Flex Mobile

2013-10-22 Thread George Yabra
Hi there,

I made a Tour de Flex Mobile proof of concept app that features the new UI
components and layouts from 4.10 and 4.11

I made a JIRA ticket and attached the .fxp file, to compile it requires
Apache Flex 4.11 and AIR 3.9 [1]

There's also a direct download .apk link. [2]

Feel free to try it and tell me what you like/dislike and if you want me to
continue developing it.

Regarding the source code, I coded it as top level as possible so new
comers can understand it better.

We have tried getting the Apache Software Foundation to help us with
getting the App Store/Google Play developer accounts, but that does not
seem to be making any progress.

At this point, it is up to an individual to take it up, and publish this to
the store on behalf of Apache Flex.

Any takers?

Hi,

No we're not tried to it, but I'm not sure we could accept a modified branch
based off the un donated Adobe code as it would contain examples and assets
that were removed by Adobe before donating it. Basically we don't have Adobe or
the other copyright holders permission to distribute.

We could also make something entirely form scratch, but is seem a bit of a wast
to ignore what Adobe has donated.

Aaron, great job! The new menu interaction looks good. Here are a few
comments:

1. Would be nice to have a splash screen with the 'powered by Apache Flex'
logo
2. Loading the Apache Flex blog in the home screen is probably not
required. Also, the formatting does not look right. Anyways, we already
have an example (HttpService) that loads the Apache Flex blog.
3. Instead, we could have a small description of what the TourDeFlex app
is about, where the source code can be downloaded, etc.
4. Would nice to have all the components center aligned.
5. CalloutButton:
5.1 Would be nice to have a list of options that allows the user to
show the various settings (direction, etc.)
5.2 Would be nice to show a couple of other callouts with other
components in them (spinner, checkboxes, etc.)
6. MobileGrid:
6.1 Would be nice to skin it along the same lines as the other
components. The dark theme looks out of place
6.2 Perhaps add a couple of custom itemrenderers as well?
7. Layouts:
7.1 I think it would be better if we started out with a few elements
right away, instead of expecting the user to click the "+" button. It is
not very obvious. Plus, we can show the 'info' button like we do for the
other components.
7.2 We should use the same size graphics. Random sized graphic seems
jarring, especially when they are really small.
7.3 Looks like a bug with TileLayout when more elements are added
after filling the screen. This can be ignored if we pre-populate the
layout/viewnavigator with elements upfront
7.4 In my experience, using a List with the respective layouts make
for a better experience. Can we switch all our layout examples to Lists?
7.5 The animations feel a slow because of the duration. We should
reduce the duration and make it snappier.
8. Geolocation
8.1 Can we use the MapQuest Flex Mobile component to show the user's
current location? I have used this component in a project and it works
quite well. [1]
8.2 We can optionally use the Google Maps javascript api and load it
using StageWebView. That could double up as an example of showing HTML in
Apache Flex apps

Again, thanks for taking this up. All the things in the above list are
optional and feel free to implement only those that you have time for. I
hope the Apache Flex community can chip in and help out here.

Thanks,
Om

thanks for the suggestions, I should have some time to make some revisions
this week. I will look at some of the mapping API's. I use the ESRI one a
lot, but will look at some of the other ones.

Re: Tour de Flex Mobile

2014-10-31 Thread quick6black
Here is an updated version. Right now all the layouts are fixed, splash
screen is added, desktop Icon added, created a new icon for the slide out
menu, and reskinned the mobile grid. I still need to add in the map for
geolocation, and looking for content for the landing page. Any suggestions,
ideas, or samples would be appreciated.

thanks,

Aaron

Re: Tour de Flex Mobile

2014-10-31 Thread OmPrakash Muppirala
Wow! This version looks so much more better. Thanks for all the effort you
have put in! I love the Apache Flex logo as the app icon. Looks perfect.

Only one more nitpik: it would be nice to have the ButtonBar, Callout,
Checkbox, DateSpinner, HSlider, RadioButton, SpinnerList, TextInput and
ToggleSwitch vertically middle aligned.

Also, I would like to add a few modifications to the List/Layout selection
logic. Can you please share your fork so I can add that? The best option
would be to send a pull request to the flex-examples github repo.

Thanks,
Om

I updated my github here <https://github.com/quick6black/flex-examples> ,
also created a pull request on the apache examples page here
<https://github.com/apache/flex-examples/pulls> . I think I merged
everything in, let me know if you have any issues. I want to add in a few
more examples of Air Native. Once we have this completed, I can compile and
put in google play (unless someone else wants too).

Thanks Aaron!

I have merged the pull request. Please continue to work on it. We can
ship it when we are all happy with it.

I can make the release on Google Play as well. I am fine either way.

Hi Om,

I created another pull request, this fixes a few bugs and an issue with the
lateral menu sliding out. I also added in a drag to close and a new view for
some more native air features. I would like to create a better landing page,
any ideas?

Re: Tour de Flex Mobile

2014-11-28 Thread Carlos Monteiro
Great work :)
I've done some testing and detected some bugs so far:

*ButtonBarView.mxml*
Bug: Select a Button then Unselect it
Fix: validate buttonbar.selectedIndex before get
buttonbar.selectedItem.label
label.text = buttonbar.selectedIndex > -1 ? buttonbar.selectedItem.label +
" Pressed." : "No Button Pressed";

*ButtonBarSkin*
If you add more than 3 buttons the button separator will be thicker only
between the middle buttons.

*ButtonSkin*
Try two buttons side to side one with width=45 and another width=450.

The Button skin does not resizes correctly.
On buttonUp the border on the right side is bigger.
On button down the border is bigger top, down, left and right.

best regards,
Carlos Monteiro

Tour de Flex Mobile - update

2014-12-10 Thread OmPrakash Muppirala
I have tested the TDF Mobile code [1] with the new iOS and Android skins
from the nightly version of 4.14.0. For the most part, things are looking
great. There are a few minor things that will need to get fixed. I plan
to add some more features and examples before cutting the final releases.

It would be great if a few folks can build this project with the nightly
release of Flex 4.14.0 and test it out.

Also, more examples would be good. Although, we are good to ship with what
we have now. Suggestions for examples are welcome.

I plan to be the release manager for this release. The plan is to release
source artifacts via the normal release process, as well as release
packaged binaries for the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Thanks,
Om

P.S. Do hit me in the head and let me know if I am not following the new
release process. I am a bit confused about that.

Great idea +1 from me.

There a few legal issues than would need to be sorted out before we could
accept it, I'm commented on those in JIRA.

I guess another issue that may come up down the track is if we wanted to
publish this application in one (or more) of the app stores, do we or Apache
have an account that can be done under?

Thanks,
Justin

I would say the best bet is to check with the guys on the Cordova team.
They would be the only other team I can think of that would be concerned
with publishing to the app stores.

IIRC, demo apps will not be accepted on Apple App Store.

It had to be turned to a pseudo game (GameOfFlex) to be accepted.

Is that correct ?

I've seen other "demo" apps in the app store, such as CordovaBrowser,
PhoneGap API Explorer, Pixate Playground, etc. so I wouldn't think that
would be an issue.

Re: [APP] Tour de Flex Mobile

2013-10-23 Thread Tomislav Pokrajcic

This is all that App Store Review Guidelines have on that matter:
2.9) Apps that are "beta", "demo", "trial", or "test" versions will be
rejected

However, it sounds more as a rule for cutting-off half-baked or
uncomplete apps than for filtering useful apps as a framework demo.

Cheers,

Tomislav

Hi George,

Great stuff! Works nicely. I downloaded & ran the .apk on my Samsung Note
and it worked very nicely.

I really like the little info button that gives you some overview about the
sample.

Apps like this would really attract people out there.

Thanks!

Subject: [APP] Tour de Flex Mobile

Regarding the source code, I coded it as top level as possible so new comers
can understand it better.

Regards

George

RE: [APP] Tour de Flex Mobile

2013-10-23 Thread Maurice Amsellem
Hi George,

Thanks again for the mobile app.

Here are some personal remarks on the UI:

1) When the app is launched, it shows the Apache Flex blog and the Apache Flex
logo.
- The flex blog is not of main interest for the target audience of your app.
- you have to think of clicking on the logo to display the components list. Not
intuitive.

Suggestions:
- Move the flex logo to the right
- Put an explicit menu button or icon to the left, that users will intuitively
click.
- better, have the component list automatically displayed at startup (that will
automatically collapse when an item is selected)

2) It's nice to provide the asdoc description of the document.
But I think it would be better if you would include the source code of each
component demo as well.
See how it's done in "GameOfFlex" app (but don't copy the code, please).
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/samples/game-of-flex-on-tablets.html

3) When the menu appears, there is a sort of black overlay that covers the rest
of the screen. Is that intended or is it a side effect ?
It would be better to remove this black semi-transparent overlay.

4) Layouts
- Why do we have to click on the (+) button to fill the layouts (I have to find
that behavior ).
Can't it be pre-populated?
- Scrolling does not work for coverFlowLayout
- Scrolling does not work for Carousel layout.
- time Machine layout is not very usable (maybe should use larger panels)

Maurice

[LAZY] Tour de Flex Mobile - commit?

2013-11-04 Thread OmPrakash Muppirala
I will be checking in George's Tour de Flex Mobile app into the
flex-examples repo.

George has submitted his ICLA already.

I think once it is in, we can start making these fixes. Any objections?

Thanks,
Om

Om,

Thank you!

You've declared your intention to create a release, to be RM and asked
the people to start testing. Seems like you're already halfway to a
release ;-) So far, you're looking good!

Om, have you read the process description since I rewrote most of it a
week or so ago? We want the words on the wiki to be clear enough for you
and anybody else, so let us know if something needs fixing there. And you
can probably just follow the use of subject tags that Erik is using for
the SDK release.

Thanks,

As long as you've scanned it for IP conflicts first, then yes, it can be

Publishing Tour de Flex Mobile on Apple App store

2013-11-06 Thread OmPrakash Muppirala
As per Nick's suggestion, I looked into Apache Cordova's efforts to publish
a similar app for their software. Here is an email discussion about this
[1] and more importantly, they have started a process with ASF's legal team
to have set up a process in place [2] It is still ongoing.

I have subscribed to this JIRA ticket and will be watching how things go.
The way they are going about seems to be to get an Enterprise publishing
agreement with the option of allowing various members to publish apps on
their behalf. Ideally, if things get through the legal process, we should
also be able to publish our apps using the same ASF enterprise license.

Thanks,
Om

Positive development in the Tour De Flex Mobile app front

2016-01-29 Thread OmPrakash Muppirala
Looks like our Infra team has managed to clear the legal hurdles with Apple
Inc. so that we can officially publish Apache signed apps to the iOS App
stores. Details here [1]

If no one has any issues, I will go ahead and create an Apple developer
account with my Apache email id and start the process of releasing Tour De
Flex.

Thanks,
Om
