Well, we already use a patched version of Tomcat and distribute the
binary in our repository dir. There was discussion about releasing a
suitably named binary (rather than maintaining in our svn tree).
Don't think that anyone has tackled this, yet.

Continuing on this patch should give the Tomcat community time to
make amends...

Re: svn commit: r573772 - in /tomcat: sandbox/gdev6x/ trunk/

2007-09-12 Thread Paul McMahan
After voting to move tomcat/trunk to sandbox there has been some good
discussion about the development model for a new trunk, mainly
whether it will follow some form of RTC. When a new trunk is created
I will ask them to reapply the annotation support patch and offer to
help if needed. If Tomcat decides to use RTC then it's possible that
the patch won't receive enough binding votes but I'm optimistic that
there will be good support. I don't expect there would be any
technical issues with it since it was actually developed against the
6.0.x branch, has passed TCK, and David and Remy worked through all
of the known issues as it was applied. Filip has also been extremely
helpful and provides good insights for this type of thing.

As that discussion plays out we can continue to create a special
build of tomcat using the procedure described in https://
issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-3206. The only difference
being that the annotation support would need to be merged from tomcat/
sandbox/gdev6x onto their latest 6.0.x tag instead of merging it from
trunk. Right now the Tomcat binaries used by Geronimo 2.x are kept
in SVN under geronimo/server/**/repository. We'll probably need to
stick with that approach for a while anyway since the Tomcat team
(understandably) has had some reservations about publishing snapshots
of trunk, see

http://www.nabble.com/please-publish-a-snapshot-tf3850372.html

Another possibility would be to investigate whether the basic
annotation support provided in the already released versions of
Tomcat 6.0.x could be adequate for Geronimo's needs. As I recall we
had that working at one point but it had some limitations.

Best wishes,
Paul

Hi,

I'm really worried about Tomcat integration support in Geronimo having
read the email. What makes it even more frustrating is the fact that
Apache Tomcat is a flagship product of the entire product set of ASF
around Java EE and when we came to the point of integrating Tomcat and
made Java EE TCK passed possible it went away with a mere svn mv. I
hope there's more than egos that can explain the decision.

Thanks Filip for your support. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks Filip for your continuing support of the Geronimo project, and
of course for the important contributions you make to the Tomcat
project. It must be frustrating to take a step back when so much
progress has been made. But you did the right thing for the
community and I'm confident things will get back on track quickly.

Best wishes,

I had no choice but to follow what was going on. I'm not sure what
is going to happen to this code base at this point, there is a lot
more bs to be resolved before anything happens.

I'm waiting to see if the board will say anything about the issue,
if they stay dormant, then most likely that codebase will to. There
is no way an API change like that will make it's way into a stable
branch like 6.0.x.

sorry about the hassle, but I had little support keeping it in
trunk, the decision to move it to sandbox had nothing to do with
comet, or anything else, simply egos that got in the way of
rational decisions.

Once again, my apologies, but you can't say I didn't try :|
