[l10n-dev] [Fwd: [discuss] Proposal]
Hi Belayneh, I am forwarding your initial message to both the l10n and native-language mailing lists. Let me welcome you to the OOo Localization project! I saw you already registered to the l10n project and requested Oromo to be added to Pootle and it seems you and the team are ready to start :-) . Would you mind adding the native-language project information at: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Languages? Thanks a lot and do not hesitate to ask questions! We are all here to help and support each other. Kind Regards, Rafaella -- Proposal of translating Openoffice to Oromo Language This proposal is about creating NLC project for Oromo Language. It addresses 3 isues.About the target language, the project goal, and Our team. The target language Oromo Language(called Afaan Oromoo by the native speakers) is the first most spoken language in Ehiopia(more than 50%) and the horn of africa.Within Africa, it is the language with the fourth most speakers(more than 40 million), after Arabic, Swahili, Hausa. In addition to Ethiopia, it is spoken in Kenya, Somalia, Djibuti, Tanzania and many countries in the rest of the world. It is written with modified latin alphabet called Qubee. Although spoken widely, this language is used by people who live in the poor part of the world(daily income of less than $2 per person). So the translation of Openoffice to this language is very significant for this people. The Project Goal Our team needs the openoffice Writer to be translated to Afaan Oromoo, Inside the Native Language Confederation. We wish to register a level two project. We have also already established a team of contributors for this project. The team The Project initiators are from Ethiopia. All team members use Oromo Language as their first language. Our team comprizes:Dawit ..(the cordinator of this project) - Bsc. degree in Linguistics and Litrature. Has done lots of thesis on Afaan Oromoo. He is committed to act as a responsible entrepreneur and inspired many Afaan Oromo speaking people to participate in this project. Belayneh Melka, Bsc. degree in Electrical Engineering. Has developed some Applications and Database Systems in Afaan Oromoo. In addtion, some students and teachers of Addis Ababa University Department of Oromo Language will participate on this project. Dear Rafealla, Thanks for your support. I have tried to add the native-language project information at: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Languages. But I don't know how. I saw two tables: a table of added languages and another table of to be added later languages. On the top of the second table, it says If you find your language in the below table, please move it up to the above table and start OpenOffice.org localization with your language.. Can you help me how I can move my language up? At least that's something worth to consider. But to be honest I (also ?) really don't care about the exact value as long as the community and the users are really active. The main point I wanted to state out is that 16% is actually to less for a full install build. Hello, 2009.04.08 09:39, Mathias Bauer rašė: (however joost says 80%?) I wonder whether we should have more flexibility. 80%/80% (UI/help) sounds like a good idea, perhaps 100% UI translation with whatever percentage for the help content can be enough also. At least that's something worth to consider. I'd fully support this idea. In smaller teams there may be too little manpower to translate everything, so help may often be left untranslated. But I'm sure that those communities would enjoy easier paths to get localized software. Perhaps the exact criteria, could be left for the respective l10n team leads to decide? Cause I guess some really small teams that are just starting would be pretty happy to see even 50% translated builds available for download... Rimas

This is because a translation fault, nothing related to the l10n process. I just want to know if there is enough time to fix it, as it would be very uncomfortable for users to find a function with a wrong name. If yes, what are the things we need to do? If it may help, here is what I would do: submit an issue and provide the correction only through a .sdf file assigned to Ivo with Rafealla and Franck in CC. Inform the relea...@openoffice.org list that it is a stopper and why it is so. However, you should also evaluate the risk to submit translation changes now and evaluate if this is a largely used function or only used by a small range of users. We (German and French currently) will try to have some localization fixes commit to 3.1.1. Speaking for my language, I also have a function translation error (two statistical functions display the same name) but I don't evaluate it as a stopper considering the number of users concerned and a workaround is available however I would like to have it corrected as soon as possible. Because we have had a very very short time to check the cws release due to integration and other issues, I think we should have a chance to get this corrections commited even if it's a release out of the localization process. Thank you Sophie for your prompt reply. After some discussions we decided to (try to) fix them for 3.1: there is not only one error and they affect very common functions. Can you point me what file I need to use as a starting point? I always managed l10n process with pootle and I don't know where to find the sdf file for OOO310_m9. Merci beaucoup!
