[l10n-dev] How to handle the character ' in our translations

2009-10-08 Thread Belayneh Melka
Hi all ,

   The Oromo Language - the language for which we are doing translation- has
lots of words which when written have the character ' .
Here are some examples showing translation of  English words to Oromo Language:

Load -> Fe'i
Save -> Olkaa'i
Add -> Ida'i
Substract -> Hir'isi
Multiply -> Baay'isi  , and so on.

We have used this character as shown above in our translations. Is it correct
or do we have to write it with escape character as follows?

   Fe\'i
   Olkaa\'i
   Ida\'i , etc...

Do our translations affect the build due to not using the escape character (\)
in our translations?

Thanks in advance,
Dawit

I'm looking forward to the summary :)

Just as additional note: I've been able to talk to people from beo-doc
(www.beo-doc.de) on Tuesday. Beo-Doc is a company who provides
translation services, consulting, terminology managment etc. We are
trying tofind some ways how they can help to improve our translations.
Actually they offered to help with our terminology / glossary. I hope,
we can use the next weeks to develop some ideas how this could work.

I tried to invite them to Orvieto (so that we can get more ideas).
Unfortunately there is an event about technical documentations at the
same time here in Germany, where be-doc ist going to present.

OOo 3.2 will have metadata support for text in Writer. This includes
loading and saving them from Writer documents and setting and retrieving
them via API.

I'm not sure that using metadata is the way to go, it's just something
that could be used. But a more detailed analysis would need some time.

Re: [l10n-dev] errors on gsicheck on m60

2009-10-08 Thread Martin Srebotnjak
I think (reading that reference mail) the string change of m1 is
located in uui/source.po file. AFAIK, it is not a change in
translation itself but in the reference of translated strings (few of
them).

So, we, who do not work with Pootle, will have to get new sdf (or pot
archive), make/take the uui/source.pot file out of it and update
current uui/source.po translation file with it. We will probably get a
few fuzzy strings that can be checked as OK. Then we make a new sdf
out of it and attach it to an issue in IZ.

Of course we could also manually change the sdf file like described
there in the mail, but then we would have to do the above described
procedure sometime later, like on the road to 3.3. I prefer to do it
as soon as possible - in the po files.

languages, able to handle comments or definitions and with some revision

Hallo Sophie, everybody

Rafaella pointed me to this thread by private mail, so I'll write a few
notes a bit late in the thread.

Pootle can assist translators with terminology (created yourself,
downloaded from our Pootle server, exported from something like
SunGloss, anything really). The only issue is that it only supports PO
and XLIFF files at the moment. If we have TBX files or some other
format, let us know, we can try to quickly write a simple converter with
the Translate Toolkit which should be quite easy if we already support
the format in another converter.

The way in which Pootle works with terminology is explained here:
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/terminology_matching
(can somebody perhaps add a screenshot to this wiki page?)

André already mentioned poterminology. This tool can help to extract
frequently occurring terms (even multi-word terms) from your existing
files to give you a great start when creating a new glossary, or to
survey your existing translations:
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/poterminology

For people translating offline, our translation tool Virtaal offers very
similar terminology help, although it is aimed even more at
productivity. Here is a screenshot:
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/virtaal/screenshots#terminology_assistance

I definitely have more ideas on how to improve this in future, so I hope
the OOo translators will help with ideas and features to improve this
even more.

Keep well

Dear All,

during today's release meeting, the below proposal has been discussed

That means that the translation delivery deadline has been postponed to

The release map for 3.2 will be readjusted accordingly.

This should give all teams a bit more time to complete translations.

Thanks,

Hi All,

I would like to officially request to postpone the translation delivery
deadline for OOo 3.2 release from October 16th to October 30th.
The reason of this request is mainly the unexpected high volume of
changes (~46000 words) both in the UI and the OLH that need to be updated.

If no objections till Monday, October 5th, I'll go ahead and announce
this after the release meeting.

Please note that the release map will need to be readjusted to reflect
this schedule change.

Thanks,
Rafaella
