Re: Solr web page changes

2017-01-12 Thread Walter Underwood
I like the list version. Might want to use historical version numbers (4, 5, 6)
to
avoid predicting the future. We’re jumping from 4.10.4 to 6.4 right now. Well,
we have some 3.x in production, but I’m trying to stomp that flat.

In the paragraph, don't mention the actual version numbers. Instead,
refer to general version categories, and include something that's
table-like where actual version numbers are given. Here's an example of
what that table structure might contain, feel free to bikeshed as necessary:

5.5.x : Version in the previous major release for bugfixes
6.x : Current major version, comes from the stable branch_6x
7.0 : Next major version, will come from master branch

When a new stable branch is built and we go looking for info that needs
updating, this page will contain it all in one place. If the code that
builds the website allows tags/comments that become invisible, perhaps
we can come up with a way to tag this with a string that we can search
for later when we we build a new stable branch.

Thanks,
Shawn

A question about DV operation

2017-01-12 Thread Shawn Heisey
I have an idea for a Solr feature, but to know whether it's at all
viable, I need a question about Lucene operation answered.

In recent versions of Solr, if a field is not stored, not indexed, but
does have docValues, the originally indexed data sent for that field
will be returned in search results. In older versions (not sure which
ones) a field must be stored to be returned.

Let's say that such a field contains a very large amount of data in
every document. Normally, this would affect OS disk cache efficiency
for general queries, because the docValues data for the field would need
to be read in order to be included in search results. Reading that
large amount of data can pollute the disk cache. If the system is in a
low-memory situation, that can affect performance.

What happens if every query has an explicit list of fields to return in
results, and the list of fields does NOT include this field that
contains a large amount of data in docValues? Does this mean that the
docValues data for the field I've mentioned is never read, and has no
effect on OS disk cache efficiency? Or would Lucene read the docValues
data even though it doesn't include it in results?

Thanks,
Shawn

Re: Solr web page changes

2017-01-12 Thread Jan Høydahl
Thanks. I included your suggestions. The whole paragraph now reads:

Apache Solr is under active development with frequent feature releases on the
current major version (e.g. 6.x). The previous major version (e.g. 5.5) may
still receive security- and bug fixes as point releases, thus taking the role
of the LTS (Long Term Support) version. Older versions are considered EOL (End
Of Life) and will not be further updated. For this reason it may also be
difficult to obtain community support for EOL versions. Large changes or
changes that break compatibility with existing functionality are normally only
included in the next major version (e.g. 7.0). For more about versions and
upgrading Solr, see the Reference Guide chapter “Upgrading Solr”
.

I don’t like putting version numbers into the website, since they WILL be out
of date at some point. But it is hard to explain three generations without
giving examples, suggestions for how to avoid it?

This is how I would phrase it (starting with what's on the staging site):

"Older versions are considered EOL (End Of Life) and will not be further
updated. Because there can be no further changes, it may also be
difficult to obtain community support for the older versions."

I think it's a good idea to start a new paragraph after that statement.
I would also rephrase a later sentence, mostly because of the incorrect
word (braking) it currently contains:

"Large changes or changes that break compatibility with existing
functionality are normally made only in the "master" branch, which will
be released as the the next major version (currently 7.0)."

Thanks,
Shawn

For me, it's not a problem of money but of time.
Whether I hire someone to do the work or do it myself, the same amount of time
has to be spent dealing with the issue. Hiring someone and finding money takes
time too. Probably more than integrating your patch, actually.

The way open source works is usually by donation of time, not money or code.
This is why your code donation is going to sit there until someone spends the
_time_ to integrate it.

I am still the maintainer of this project. I am no longer using Lucene or
PyLucene on a daily basis since 2011. I'm still happy to continue maintaining
the project, though.

bq. Ok I guess my opinion that SEARCHHANDLER is more specific than QUERY isn't
shared by you.
:) David, if you have strong feelings about this, let's create a separate issue
and discuss this. I wanted to complete this round of cleanup before 6.4 is out
to avoid leaving some obvious mistakes and omissions that resulted from
incremental work across several Jira issues.

As I explained above, I tried to minimize the number of categories, and at the
same time I wanted to reflect the functionality of components... SEARCHHANDLER
reflects IMHO an implementation detail, whereas QUERY (I admit, it may sound
too generic at first) tries to encompass an idea of components that users use
for query / response interaction.

bq. On master branch, we should not register the old names as well...
I'll create a separate blocker issue for 7.0. There's a lot of cleanup that
still needs to be done in the naming of eg. QPlugin-s, Highlighter-s etc, but
that would break back-compat in 6.x, so 7.0 seems like the right place to do it.

On master branch, we should not register the old names as well... we will
likely forget about this in the coming days/weeks and then one day 7.0 will
arrive with this cruft still present making it harder to justify removing
later. It could be a separate issue marked as blocker for 7.0, or just do in

Re: UnifiedHighlighter and extraction of exact hit offset ranges

2017-01-12 Thread Timothy Rodriguez (BLOOMBERG/ 120 PARK)
It's arguably per request, imo. Even per field you may want different possible
formats depending on the request (and field). That would potentially require a
different parameter to specify the formatter to use for a given request (and a
way to config multiple formatters, with perhaps a default).

Subject: Re: UnifiedHighlighter and extraction of exact hit offset ranges

If the generics could be contained _instead of_ spreading to the UH class
itself (making UH typed), I think it could be nice. But given the per-field
possible settings for formatting... that in particular makes balancing these
concerns hard. I guess in the end Object isn't too bad since it's limited to
the advanced method use-case (highlightFieldsAsObjects).

formatters are passed in per request.) I wound up dumping the changes because
they were quite substantial and they'd also push it further from the
PostingsHighlighjer.

I'm hoping to get back to trying that again in he future. It'd be nice to have
a PassageFormatter.

Thanks David!

That's almost exactly what I ended up doing. I don't mind casting
Object to my own type; you can always make it a covariant override in
your subclass (which you have to do to access those expert-level
methods anyway).

I still kind of think startOffset/endOffset and other related methods
could be made public to allow tinkering with them in
FieldHighlighter#highlightOffsetsEnums (otherwise this method is
protected for overriding, but useless in practice).

There is another API problem I found too. If you wish to override
FieldHighlighter.getSummaryPassagesNoHighlight you can't return
anything sensible because Passage is final, contains only
package-private fields and addMatch is package-private too. So you
can't create a "custom" passage.

I can file an issue and provide a patch if these changes are not
against the design of the unified highlighter?

> Solr APIs have organically evolved and they are sometimes inconsistent with
> each other or not in sync with the widely followed conventions of HTTP
> protocol. Trying to make incremental changes to make them modern is like
> applying band-aid. So, we have done a complete rethink of what the APIs
> should be. The most notable aspects of the API are as follows:
> The new set of APIs will be placed under a new path {{/solr2}}. The legacy
> APIs will continue to work under the {{/solr}} path as they used to and they
> will be eventually deprecated.
> There are 4 types of requests in the new API
> * {{/v2//*}} : Hit a collection directly or manage
> collections/shards/replicas
> * {{/v2//*}} : Hit a core directly or manage cores
> * {{/v2/cluster/*}} : Operations on cluster not pertaining to any collection

FOSDEM 2017 Open Source Conference - Brussels

2017-01-12 Thread Sharan F

Hello Everyone

This email is to tell you about ASF participation at FOSDEM. The event
will be held in Brussels on 4^th & 5^th February 2017 and we are hoping
that many people from our ASF projects will be there.

https://fosdem.org/2017/

Attending FOSDEM is completely free and the ASF will again be running a
booth there. Our main focus will on talking to people about the ASF, our
projects and communities.

*_Why Attend FOSDEM?_*
Some reasons for attending FOSDEM are:

1. Promoting your project: FOSDEM has up to 4-5000 attendees so is a
great place to spread the word about your project
2. Learning, participating and meeting up: FOSDEM is a developers
conference so includes presentations covering a range of
technologies and includes lots of topic specific devrooms

_*FOSDEM Wiki *_
A page on the Community Development wiki has been created with the main
details about our involvement at conference, so please take a look

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COMDEV/FOSDEM+2017

If you would like to spend some time on the ASF booth promoting your
project then please sign up on the FOSDEM wiki page. Initially we would
like to split this into slots of 3-4 hours but this will depend on the
number of projects that are represented.

We are also looking for volunteers to help out on the booth over the 2
days of the conference, so if you are going to be there and are willing
to help then please add your name to the volunteer list.

_*Project Stickers*_
If you are going to be at FOSDEM and do not have any project stickers to
give away then we may (budget permitting) be able to help you get some
printed. Please contact me with your requirements.

_*Social Event*_
Some people have asked about organising an ASF social event / meetup
during the conference. This is possible but we will need know how many
people are interested and which date works best. The FOSDEM wiki page
also contains an 'Arrival / Departure' section so so please add your
details if you would like to participate.

I hope this helps people see some of the advantages of attending FOSDEM
and we are looking forward to seeing lots of people there from our ASF
communities.

Thanks
Sharan

Re: Installing PyLucene

2017-01-12 Thread Thomas Koch
Dear Andi,

many thanks for your review of the patch and helpful comments.

As mentioned in my previous mail to the list I’m afraid to let you know that we
currently cannot put more effort into this task. This may change in the future
of course.

However, with „funding“ my idea was to look for open source funding such as
provided by the Python Software Foundation (e.g.):
https://www.python.org/psf/grants

That’s probably worth a try - especially because the PSF is well known, has
some sponsors and also receives donations by companies using Python and Python
related projects on regular basis…

> Thank you for the work done so far, it's looking really good but it needs to

Ok. Maybe ASF could contact PSF and ask for such a grant that could be uses to
>hire back the contractor who did the JCC Python 3 port originally and have
>him/her refresh it for the latest JCC on trunk
? (If he/she is willing to do so … that’s another question).

Just thinking about ways to get this forward. I’m afraid I cannot provide more
support currently ,-(

[jira] [Updated] (LUCENE-7628) Add a getMatchingChildren() method to DisjunctionScorer

Alan Woodward updated LUCENE-7628:

Attachment: LUCENE-7628.patch

Here's a patch opting for the first of the two options I describe above. The
change is pretty small - just a default implementation on Scorer, and then
specialised methods on DisjunctionScorer and MinShouldMatchSumScorer. I think
this is the best way forward?

> (UnifiedHighlighter) Passage.java has a variety of package-level fields and
> methods that are accessed by FieldHighlighter.highlightOffsetsEnums (the
> kernel of the UH). It should be possible for people to extend this method to
> tweak the process of producing passages. That method is extensible but
> Passage.java is too closed. Even if one were to write their own equivalent
> to Passage.java, it would be impossible to then use PassageScorer or
> PassageFormatter.
