[marketing] Suggestion: Separating Writer, Calc, Base, Draw etc

2010-10-26 Thread goldfish

Hi,

Please could we make OpenOffice load 'Writer', 'Math',
'Impress','Calc', 'Base', 'Draw' etc separately. In other words, can
these separate entities be kept somewhat isolated so that the load is
not too much and it will load faster when the program is started.

Please let me know if I am not clear.

Best regards,
Paul

http://news.google.co.in/news/more?pz=1&cf=all&ncl=dMzfZnDvUIn_zgMgE51SLnwNfh5jM&topic=t
NEW DELHI: More than five years after it was conceived by then
education secretary Sudeep Banerjee to take on Nicholas Negroponte's
$100 laptop and one-and-half years after his demise, HRD minister Kapil
Sibal on Thursday unveiled access-cum-computing device priced at Rs
1500 or $35 for students but can be eventually owned by public at
large.

The sleek-looking device -- a cross between I-Pad and tablet PC and
charged by an equally sleeker solar panel -- is designed by experts at
IIT, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore. The upper price limit for the device is pegged at $35.

HRD ministry has made an open invitation to one and all to come up with
more variants that fulfills specifications spelt out by it. The
ministry has set up several separate teams, which are involved in
bringing out their prototypes. In the next few months -- by then more
innovations will emerge and even price can come down to $20 or $10 ---
the ministry will issue an international expression of interest for
manufacturing of these devices. "Initially manufacturing might be done
in Taiwan or some other place but eventually it will be done in India,"
Sibal said. He said there are already enough offers for lower price.
The $35 price, he said, is inclusive of cost of manufacturing abroad.
However, the cost of the solar panel has not been factored into the
price yet. The ministry is in talks with a company to bring down the
cost of solar panels.

One reason for the low cost -- apart from the falling prices of chip --
is the sheer number of students who will get this device. Under Sarva
Shiksha Abhiyan alone, there are more than 11 crore children, who are
the likely receipients. Add to that lakhs of aided and unaided schools
in the primary and secondary sector. Even university student can use
the machine. At the current price point of $35, Sibal said, there would
be 50% subsidy toeducational institutions, which will effectively bring
down the cost to only Rs 750. The initial order will be for no less
than one lakh laptops.

Based on Open Source, the device does not have a hard-drive. It can not
only support video-web conferencing facility, but also boasts of
several other latest features -- multimedia content viewer (pdf, docx,
ods, adp, xls, jpeg, gif, png, bmp, odt, zip, AVCHD, AVI, AC3),
searchable Pdf reader, unzip tool for unzipping files, computing
capabilities such as Open Office, SciLab for printing support, media
player capable of playing streamed along with stored media files, USB
port etc.

Some transparency in the color adds slickness and some reflection adds

We've been discussing the omission of color pretty thoroughly since the
OOobranding was changed, but it seems that it lead to... nothing. Is
the lackof color in application icons and file icons final? Could we
have anofficial vote on this?I think this is a topic important enough
to really pay attention to(especially now that we're nearing release),
because it could really, reallybring down the usability of OOo.P. S.
The best office suite icons I've seen come from the elementary iconpack
(http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Elementary+Icons?content=73439),w
hich color the entire icon with a particular color and puts a nice
bigsymbol in the middle (like notes for a sound file, or a W for a Word

looks reallygreat.-- This is a site which donates money to a custom

Re: [marketing] Online Open Office

2010-05-18 Thread goldfish

Hi Roman,

Completely agree.

A corporation has to be profitable and that is fair. So I'm worried
Online OpenOffice may not be free.

However, they could support it with advertisements and keep it free for
the user. Or charge other companies for support or any other revenue
model which pays for the Research and Design, Development, maintenance
of Online OpenOffice and also gives them profits.

Regards,
Paul

PS Your English is perfectly fine and you are easily understood.

that, they would have control of your project, andthat's not a good
thing.A corporation will never control a community, unless there is
noalternative. If you start the project from the community, maybe they
want to supporthim then. But in this case, is already defined who runs
it. If you doso, they undoubtedly will direct and to the side that
suits thecorporation, not the community.Sorry for my bad english. Here,

Hi Varun,

I completely agree.

Till then, there is always Zoho and Google Docs.

I use the extension OpenOffice.org2GoogleDocs (gdocs_2.2.0.oxt 2.2.0):
This extension helps me upload to Google Docs or Zoho in just 2 clicks!

Best regards,
Paul

Re: [marketing] Re: [webmasters] Re: [marketing] Download Charts not working for more than a week I think

2010-05-12 Thread goldfish

Hi,

It appears the Download Charts are still not accurate. (Even May 12,
2010 shows downloads below 50,000.)

Joost or anyone who can help me with this:

Do the OpenOffice downloads from CNET's Download.com count in this
Download Chart?

Thanks,

Regards,
Paul

Hi,

it has a different reason. The loadbalancer was offline for some days
and it was switched to a load balancing mirror server. I hope to get
statistical data transferred back from the mirror to the main
loadbalancer so we get the missing data.

Kind regards, Joost

Hi Bernd and Joost,

Good to know that we will get the the missing data soon.

It is good to see the actual download numbers as it makes me happy that
so many people benefit for free from this wonderful software program.

Joost, could we please have download statistics on a graphical map like
Firefox? Their webpage is:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/stats/

Thanks,

Best regards,
Paul

[marketing] Download Charts not working for more than a week I think

2010-05-11 Thread goldfish

Hi OpenOffice well wishers,

I think the download Charts are not working for more than a week.

If this webpage is to be believed then it means that from May 03, 2010
to May 11, 2010 there are less than 50,000 downloads a day. That's hard
to believe because the downloads are usually much more than 150,000 a
day.

Please can someone let me know if this drop in downloads as shown by
the website is correct. If it is correct, why is there such an alarming
drop? Have our enemies breached our defenses?!? ;)

Here is the web link:

Please help.

Appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Paul
