The version is : RELEASE220

Voting requirements

Before voting +1 you are required to download the signed source code
package, compile it as provided, and test the resulting executable on
your own platform, along with also verifying that the package meets
the requirements of the ASF policy on releases -
http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html#management

In particular, you should (at least) follow these steps.

1. Download the artefact to be voted on and unzip it.
2. Check that the artefact does not contain any jar files (there are
branding folders with the name *.jar).
3. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file
4. Build it using the README provided by the artefact.
5. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by
the build process and try running it.

In addition to checking the sources, you may check the associated
convenience binary zip, installers, nbms and maven staging at the links
above. You are not expected to check every convenience binary.

As well as checking any artefact functions correctly, you
should check that it has been correctly signed by a PMC member, and
that the source being voted on is sufficient to build the relevant
binary.

This vote is going to be open at least 72 hours, vote with +1, 0, and
-1 as usual. (Please justify -1)

Please mark your vote as binding only if you're an Apache NetBeans
PMC member to help with voting admin.

Only respond if you are going to vote - this is NOT a discussion
thread.

Apache NetBeans 22 will be released if and when this vote passes.

I'd like to call a vote to release Apache NetBeans NBPackage 1.0-beta4.

NBPackage is a command line tool and library for packaging a NetBeans
IDE or platform application zip bundle into a native installer or
package. It supports optional bundling of a Java runtime. It is
inspired by the JDK's jpackage tool, but tailored to the needs of the
IDE and RCP, with a different range of packagers, and some support for
cross-platform package building. Currently supported packagers include
Windows EXE (InnoSetup), macOS PKG, and Linux DEB, RPM and AppImage.

1.0-beta4 includes an update to include FlatLaf JARs in the macOS code
signing process to coincide with the addition of native binaries for that
platform in NetBeans 21. Various dependencies and plugins have also

Re: [VOTE] Minimum JDK build and run policy (dropping JDK 8)

2023-04-11 Thread Kai Uwe Pel

+1  (non-binding)

Regards
Kai

On 4/11/2023 10:16 AM, Neil C Smith wrote:

# Proposed policy

* Apache NetBeans 18 will be the last release to support running the
platform on JDK 8.

* From Apache NetBeans 19, the minimum JDK required to build and run
the IDE or platform will be JDK 11.

* Future releases will take an "LTS-1" strategy for building and
running (and CI testing) of the IDE and platform. Three JDKs will be
supported at any one time - the current JDK, plus the previous two LTS
releases. eg. NetBeans 20 and 21 (Nov 2023 / Feb 2024) will support
JDK 11, 17 and 21. NetBeans 22 (May 2024) will support JDK 17, 21 and
22.

## Background

The Apache NetBeans IDE has officially required JDK 11 to build and
run since NetBeans 13 in March 2022. The platform (and unofficially
the IDE) have continued to support running on JDK 8 - all modules
requiring a higher JDK must currently be optional. Various tests have
continued on JDK 8.

This situation is causing issues as workarounds must be found for
currently non-optional features that have dependencies or other
requirements for running on a higher JDK (eg. Maven indexing / Lucene
[1]). It's causing delays, complications and missed testing time in
integration of new features (eg. problems merging support for EE 10
[2]). Supporting an increasing range of JDKs is causing increasing
workload, both for people and CI. Meeting the challenges of deprecated
(for removal) features in the JDK is also complicated by the
additional JDK requirements.

## Notes

* Apache NetBeans users will continue to be recommended to use the
current or latest LTS JDK to run the IDE. The IDE will continue to
support users developing projects for/with JDK 8, for as long as
nb-javac and other dependencies allow.

* This proposal specifically doesn't address when the default bytecode
level across the codebase is increased. This can happen when required,
but non-optional modules would be free to adopt the minimum JDK as
they need to.

* Optional modules may continue to require a runtime JDK higher than
the minimum. Should it become necessary, build time optional modules
might be considered - eg. a build on the minimum JDK may exclude
modules that will not run on that JDK at runtime.

* Some modules that are of independent use (eg. lookup, utilities,
etc.) might be nominated and advertised to continue JDK 8 support for
the time being. This is not expected to cover the runtime container as
a whole - https://netbeans.apache.org/tutorials/nbm-runtime-container.html

* Once NetBeans 19 is released, the NetBeans 18 release branch could
be used to backport and release JDK 8 supporting fixes, subject to any
PMC members wanting to manage those releases.

* The term "platform" is used in reference to the whole framework of
modules that we release (eg. via Maven), not just the platform
cluster.

Hi.
major improvements (introduction of `wait4java=false`) have been made in HTML/

This is the main voting artefact:

its sha512sum is

and I signed it as
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans-html4j/netbeans-html4j-1.8/netbeans-html4j-1.8.zip.asc
 - these files were
produced by
https://ci-builds.apache.org/job/Netbeans/job/netbeans-html4j-release/11/ job
run.

If you want to build from the source, then unzip and use following command:

netbeans-html4j$ mvn clean install -DskipTests

you can also run the command without `-DskipTests`, but on some configurations,
some of the tests are flaky, so your outcome may vary. I am often receiving
test failures in `browser` module and I have to re-run the tests few times.

Of course, to verify the new library works, you should have an HTML/Java
project and switch it to the new version. If you don't have such project, you
can create one in NetBeans 13: "New Project/Java with Maven/Java Frontend
Application" - if that application works for you, then you can switch to
locally built HTML/Java API by changing:

--- a/pom.xml
+++ b/pom.xml
@@ -15,7 +15,7 @@
  js

-1.7
+1.8
  11
  1.0
  2.13

If your application continues to work, everything is OK.

In addition to the main voting artifact, we are also about to approve the
following Maven repository:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachenetbeans-
It has been produced by unzipping the main ZIP file and running:
```
netbeans-html4j$ JAVA_HOME=/jdk-17/ mvn -Dgpg.keyname=xyz -Papache-release
clean -DskipTests deploy
```
I'll release it to Maven central if our vote passes.

Please cast your votes. The vote is going to be open at least for 72h.

Dear community,

This is our first voting candidate for the 12.4 release of Apache NetBeans.
Please note all requirements below for validating sources and convenience
binaries before voting.

Apache NetBeans 12.4 constitutes all clusters in the Apache NetBeans Git
repository, which together provide the NetBeans Platform (i.e., the
underlying application framework), as well as all the modules that provide
the Java SE, Java EE, PHP, JavaScript and Groovy features of Apache
NetBeans.

Build artifacts are available here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans/12.4/vc1
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans-platform/12.4/v1

They were built by the Jenkins pipeline:
https://ci-builds.apache.org/job/Netbeans/job/netbeans-TLP/job/netbeans/job/release124/22/

We are primarily voting on:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans/12.4/vc1/netbeans-12.4-source.zip

SHA512:
f8ee78d9ccba513234f855fc516bf251746eb030f6c747239b0db3da2f32932dc9431898fc334a22ebb25f4caec58c292b04d261736bc8de4eb6ead585dffc04

KEYS file:
https://downloads.apache.org/netbeans/KEYS

Associated with the primary source item we have, generated with the
pipeline mentioned above:

-- under https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans/12.4/vc1
binaries associated with the source
netbeans-12.4-bin.zip
as well as update content under nbms folder

-- under
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans-platform/12.4/vc1
you will find the platform cluster build

netbeans-platform-12.4-source.zip

Release specific wiki page:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Apache+NetBeans+12.4

Voting Requirements

Before voting +1 you are required to download the signed source code
package, compile it as provided, and test the resulting executable on your
own platform, along with also verifying that the package meets the
requirements of the ASF policy on releases - see:

http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html#management

In particular, you should (at least) follow these steps.

1. Download the artefact to be voted on and unzip it.

2. Check that the artefact does not contain any jar files, except for:
  -
platform/autoupdate.services/test/unit/src/org/netbeans/api/autoupdate/data/empty.jar
  - enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
  - enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
  - enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
  - enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
which are only jars by their name

3. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file

4. Build it using the README provided by the artifact.

5. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by the
build process and try running it.

In addition to checking the sources, you should check the associated
convenience binary zips and nbms at the artifact links above. As well as
checking any artifact functions correctly, you should check that it has
been correctly signed by a PMC member, and that the source being voted on
is sufficient to build the relevant binary.

Separate votes will be held on other convenience binaries, including
installers and Maven artifacts. Those will be dependent on this vote
passing.

This vote is going to be open at least 72 hours, vote with +1, 0, and -1 as
usual. (Please justify -1)

Please mark your vote with (binding) only if you're an Apache NetBeans PMC
member to help with voting admin.

Only respond if you are going to vote, i.e., this is NOT a discussion
thread.

NetBeans 12.4 will be released if and when this vote passes.

has successfully finished and I believe it is time for one more vote:

Let's vote about Apache VSNetBeans 12.4 Beta 2 complementary binary (again),
but this time with `nb-javac` included!

This PMC vote is a follow up requested when issue
https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/LEGAL/issues/LEGAL-563
was resolved.

Warning: this is potentially controversial vote and it may trigger some
discussion. Please use this thread only for voting (possibly with some
justification). If you want to discuss, please modify the subject: remove
[VOTE] and put there [DISCUSS], at least. Thank you for keeping this voting
thread clean.

I am opening vote for a new complimentary binary. Source code remains exactly
the same as was a part of previous 12.4 Beta2 votings. The build
https://ci-builds.apache.org/job/Netbeans/job/netbeans-vscode/374/
has however been executed with additional `-D3rdparty.modules=.*nbjavac.*`
option as documented in the build me: https://github.com/apache/netbeans/blob/
master/java/java.lsp.server/vscode/BUILD.md as a result the new binary
contains following additional files in the `.vsix` ZIP file:

+licenses/GPL-2-CP
+extension/nbcode/extra/
+extension/nbcode/extra/.lastModified
+extension/nbcode/extra/config/
+extension/nbcode/extra/config/Modules/
+extension/nbcode/extra/config/Modules/org-netbeans-modules-nbjavac-api.xml

+extension/nbcode/extra/update_tracking/org-netbeans-modules-nbjavac-impl.xml
+extension/nbcode/extra/update_tracking/org-netbeans-modules-nbjavac.xml

We are primarily voting on VSIX complimentary binary available here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans-vscode-ext/12.4-beta2/apache-netbeans-java-12.3.992.vsix

GPG signature and SHA checksum are available along the binaries:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans-vscode-ext/12.4-beta2/apache-netbeans-java-12.3.992.vsix.asc
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans-vscode-ext/12.4-beta2/apache-netbeans-java-12.3.992.vsix.sha512

Version of 12.4 Beta2+nbjavac VSIX is 12.3.992 as VSCode does not support
versions like “12.4.Beta2” and to be higher than previous 12.4-beta2 (without
nb-javac).

Given the only difference from the previous (successful) vote is the inclusion
of `nbjavac` GPLv2 with "Classpath Exception" component, we are primarily
voting about it and about
https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/LEGAL/issues/LEGAL-563
and whether PMC believes the "Classpath Exception" applies.

My understanding is that "Classpath Exception" applies to "certain files ...
that ... contain the Classpath Exception" header. I did "find | grep" check in
https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/
r821d9e9fdc8d9fd5663e7c326d25e4626e1a27eb13e45f4d639ea199%40%3Cdev.netbeans.apache.org%3E
and I believe all the important files contain such header.

This vote is going to be open at least for 72 hours, vote with +1, 0, and -1
as usual. My expectation is that most of the Apache individual contributors
currently employed by Oracle will abstain from the vote. However, I am willing
to cast my own, personal "+1 (binding)" as a proof that I am really convinced
the "Classpath Exception" applies and I am not aware of any plot or trick that
would indicate something else.

Let it all begin!

Hi,

Yep, in order to get things compiling I uploaded the old NetBeans 8.2
binary of the non-donated parser to OSOUL [1] a while back. I
thought we

could use that binary temporarily to speed up things (it's CDDL'd after
all).

But as Laszlo says it would be good to understand what the module does
and build a parser from scratch. Note that C++ has evolved a lot since
8.2 days, so I assume we'll have to update the parser with latest C++
features.

I think it's ok to look at the old repository to know _what_ the module
does, but of course we can't just copy the sources of non-donated
modules (GPL+CPE/CDDL) and just paste them in an Apache Licensed
project. This is strictly forbidden. I'd go with a clean-room
implementation as Laszlo suggests.

A while back I opened this issue:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-4619

to track the problems I was finding with the CND donation. When
something was missing or not implemented I simply added some source
that

throws an Exception, added a subtask to NETBEANS-4619 to track what the
problem was and kept-on trying to compile the cnd cluster.

Also there's a branch in my repo you may want to take a look at:

https://github.com/vieiro/netbeans/tree/issues/NETBEANS-4619

This does compile several modules in the cnd cluster. You can try to
clone that branch and run "ant -Dcluster.config=cnd" to see how far I
got there.

I may be able to upload some more commits to that branch with a
compilable version of "cnd.modelimpl". I'm currently stuck in finding
the license info for the "open-fortran-parser-0.7.1.2.zip" file. Next
module in the dependency tree seems to be the "cnd.remote" which seems
to need a "cnd-rfs-1.0-zip" file (no idea what this does, though).

So, to summarize:

- We can get going with the 8.2 parser binary for compilation. Even for
release. It would be nice to have a new parser implementation.
- There's a lot of research to be done finding third-party licenses,
seeing if they're compatible, uploading them to OSOUL and adding the
proper entries in external/binaries-list, with a companion txt file
that

explains the license of the dependency (see [1] for an example).
- Once the "cnd" cluster compiles we should go take a look at
NETBEANS-4619 to find-out what needs a new implementation.

I hope this clarifies, let me know any questions you may have.

Kind regards,
Antonio

[1]
The missing parser module is
"org-netbeans-modules-cnd-antlr-RELEASE82.jar.txt".

In my NETBEANS-4619 branch I added the binary to OSOUL and to the
"binaries-list" file here:

https://github.com/vieiro/netbeans/blob/issues/NETBEANS-4619/cnd/libs.antlr.cnd/external/binaries-list

https://github.com/vieiro/netbeans/blob/issues/NETBEANS-4619/cnd/libs.antlr.cnd/external/org-netbeans-modules-cnd-antlr-RELEASE82.jar.txt

Well, as far as I checked the non donated parser was a mostly

then customized code. I can understand why the license was not clear.
The best thing would be if we can re-implement that module, by
generating a parser from the source and implementing the required glue
around that. Though it requires deep knowledge and time...

On 3/16/21 3:14 PM, Tristan Lewis wrote:

With the non-donated parts, should we try to ascertain the state of
their licenses? It seems we can access the original files - either
through the old repository or via java de-compiling.

I think getting it to compile without requiring modification
should be

the first goal. I would think that reviewing changes from where the
branch is currently towards getting it compiling is worthwhile to
ensure we are tracking any work that we are necessitating by having
functions that need to be implemented etc.

Having a pull request to look at might be a good way to get the ball
rolling.

Dear community,

This is our first voting candidate for the 12.3 release of Apache NetBeans.
It is built off the same commit as 12.3-beta3. Please note all requirements
below for validating sources and convenience binaries before voting.

Apache NetBeans 12.3 constitutes all clusters in the Apache NetBeans Git
repository, which together provide the NetBeans Platform (i.e., the
underlying application framework), as well as all the modules that provide
the Java SE, Java EE, PHP, JavaScript and Groovy features of Apache
NetBeans.

Build artifacts are available here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans/12.3
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans-platform/12.3

We should probably have put them in a 'vc1' folder, rather than the root
folder, on the other hand, we're optimistic that multiple vote candidates
won't be needed. :-)

They were built by the Jenkins pipeline and moved to their place:
https://ci-builds.apache.org/job/Netbeans/job/netbeans-TLP/job/netbeans/job/release123/14/

Voting Requirements

Before voting +1 you are required to download the signed source code
package, compile it as provided, and test the resulting executable on your
own platform, along with also verifying that the package meets the
requirements of the ASF policy on releases - see:

http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html#management

In particular, you should (at least) follow these steps.

1. Download the artefact to be voted on and unzip it.

2. Check that the artefact does not contain any jar files, except for:
  -
platform/autoupdate.services/test/unit/src/org/netbeans/api/autoupdate/data/empty.jar
  - enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
  - enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
  - enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
  - enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
which are only jars by their name

3. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file

4. Build it using the README provided by the artifact.

5. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by the
build process and try running it.

In addition to checking the sources, you should check the associated
convenience binary zips and nbms at the artifact links above. As well as
checking any artifact functions correctly, you should check that it has
been correctly signed by a PMC member, and that the source being voted on
is sufficient to build the relevant binary.

Separate votes will be held on other convenience binaries, including
installers and Maven artifacts. Those will be dependent on this vote
passing.

This vote is going to be open at least 72 hours, vote with +1, 0, and -1 as
usual. (Please justify -1)

Please mark your vote with (binding) only if you're an Apache NetBeans PMC
member to help with voting admin.

Only respond if you are going to vote, i.e., this is NOT a discussion
thread.

NetBeans 12.3 will be released if and when this vote passes.

Slight issue that ticking trusted in the Add UC dialog doesn't seem to

Before voting! See requirements below!

KEYS file:

Before voting +1 you are required to download the signed source code
package, compile it as provided, and test the resulting executable on
your own platform, along with also verifying that the package meets
the requirements of the ASF policy on releases - see
http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html#management

In particular, you should (at least) follow these steps.

1. Download the artifact to be voted on and unzip it.
2. Check that the ariefact does not contain any jar files, except for:
-
platform/autoupdate.services/test/unit/src/org/netbeans/api/autoupdate/data/empty.jar
- enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
- enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
- enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
- enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
which are only jars by their name
3. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file
4. Build it using the README provided by the artefact.
5. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by
the build process and try running it.

In addition to checking the sources, you should check the associated
convenience binary NBMs at the artifact links above. As well as
checking any artifact functions correctly, you should check that it
has been correctly signed by a PMC member, and that the source being
voted on is sufficient to build the relevant binary.

You can test update of the IDE using the provided NBMs by adding a
temporary update center in Tools / Plugins / Settings. You may wish to
use a temporary install or userdir for this!

https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans/12.0-u1/nbms/updates.xml.gz

The updated NBM files are not jar signed this time.

This vote is going to be open at least 72 hours, vote with +1, 0, and
-1 as usual. Please mark your vote with (binding) if you're an Apache
NetBeans PMC member to help with voting admin.

Thank you all!

Hi all,

I'm moving from Oracle to Azul, from April onwards.

I'll be responsible for open source projects and related team members at
Azul -- and, even better, Azul will be planning to bundle, among others,
NetBeans with Zulu. That's something we've been missing here in the Apache
NetBeans community -- a JDK vendor to bundle NetBeas with a JDK.

More details here:

https://blogs.oracle.com/geertjan/from-oracle-to-azul

Of course, aside from the above bundling of NetBeans with Zulu, this change
in where I work will have no impact on NetBeans -- no organization has
preferential treatment in Apache projects.

However, any JDK vendor is encouraged to do the same as Azul will be doing
-- turn their JDK into something usable by developers out of the box by
including the tools for using it.

More details re me and Oracle, Azul, etc:

Dear all,

Summary: When two otherwise independent Gradle projects has declared
dependency over a released artifact through a repository, shall
sources loaded from the available released sources.jar in the
repository, or shall we try to open the source form the opened project?

Right now the Gradle plugin behaves semantically correct as it is
opening the source from the released source jar file from the local
repository cache. Creating a composite build of these projects could
help. See: https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1861

However I have another implementation which does not need the include
build (as that might be side effects). My question is the following.
Shall the resolving the third party source against opened projects be
the default behavior or shall it be put behind a switch and if it is
behind the switch what shall be the default behavior.

Let me do a poll on this, so reply with the following if you care,:

- enabled
- switch, enabled
- switch, disabled

The poll will be open for at least 3 days.

Thank you!

developing Apache NetBeans Platform instead of Apache Ant.

nbm-maven-harness 11.2 is a library built using maven artefacts Apache

You have to follow an order to proper regenerate the plugin as

Before voting +1 you are required to download the signed source code
package, compile it as provided, and test the resulting executable on
your own platform, along with also verifying that the package meets
the requirements of the ASF policy on releases - see
http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html#management

In particular, you should (at least) follow these steps.

1. Download the artefact to be voted on and unzip it.
2. Check that the artefact does not contain any jar files, except for:
 -
platform/autoupdate.services/test/unit/src/org/netbeans/api/autoupdate/data/empty.jar
 - enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
 - enterprise/glassfish.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
 - enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/nottaDir-4_1_2.jar
 - enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
which are only jars by their name
3. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file
4. Build it using the README provided by the artefact.
5. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by
the build process and try running it.

In addition to checking the sources, you should check the associated
convenience binary NBMs at the artefact links above. As well as
checking any artefact functions correctly, you should check that it
has been correctly signed by a PMC member, and that the source being
voted on is sufficient to build the relevant binary.

You can test update of the IDE using the provided NBMs by adding a
temporary update centre in Tools / Plugins / Settings. You may wish to
use a temporary install or userdir for this!

https://netbeans.apache.org/nb/updates/11.2/updates.xml.u1

The updated NBM files are JAR signed with an ASF certificate, so will
show as Third-Party but at least Signed and Valid. A second round of
updates will download the actual updated nb-javac libraries -
unfortunately, due to the current temporary keystore used in the build
process, the nb-javac updates will show as self-signed - I do not
believe we have any way to fix that for 11.2.

This vote is going to be open at least 72 hours, vote with +1, 0, and
-1 as usual. Please mark your vote with (binding) if you're an Apache
NetBeans PMC member to help with voting admin.

If and when this vote passes, the updated source and NBMs will be
released on to the mirrors, and the updated catalog (as per above)
merged into the existing update centre on the NetBeans VM.

Thank you for all the hard work!

Best wishes,

Neil

As a Windows user I can say that I see a noticeable improvement in
performance over 11.1. I do have Windows Defender turned off for my .m2
folder, my NB folder, and my project folder. One change I made compared to
NB 11.1 was to place the userdir and cachedir into a folder adjacent to NB
and also tuned off Defender for them. Nice to see more up to date pom

Hi All,

I knew I spoke too soon promising an on-schedule third beta! :-)

We still need to solve the issue of delivering an updated nb-javac for
NB 11.2 (more below). It isn't now feasible to fix and merge
something today to get a beta build done, and as I'm tied up with work
over the next few days, I'm going to push back beta3 to the beginning
of next week. That gives a bit more time to not rush a fix and ensure
it's working. I'd still prefer beta3 to also end up as the final
release vote candidate.

In beta2 we had a revised way to provision nb-java in the internal
3rd-party update centre, similarly to JavaFX. Currently all 11.x
releases share a plugin portal, but we need a separate nb-java for new
Java features in NB 11.2, while still serving the old one to 11.0 and
11.1. Unfortunately the solution in beta2 has proven not to be
working correctly in practice. There are a couple of potential fixes
for this, or we may need to revert to Plan B and use a separate
specific update centre for nb-javac in NB 11.2, or switch entirely to
the new plugin portal.

https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1556
https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1560

Thoughts are welcome on approach. My personal preference is probably
still PR1556.

With the 11.1 release wrapped up, let's take a moment to thank Neil for his
great work as release manager.

We can and will evaluate the release in various ways, though the most
important aspect of it is that it succeeded, we have our first release as
top level Apache project, and no small reason for that is Neil pulling
everything together and getting everyone to work together smoothly and
painlessly.

Plus, thanks to Neil we now have a predictable release cycle with quarterly
releases — that is fantastic and something I’d never have thought doable.

I hope Neil will consider doing at least the 11.2 release too, since that
will enable any kinks in the process to be ironed out in preparation for
the next volunteer release manager, like Laszlo did two releases as well
before him.

Kind regards and congrats to all of us as well,

and this voting candidate.

Apache NetBeans 11.1 constitutes all clusters in the Apache NetBeans
Git repo, which together provide the NetBeans Platform (i.e., the
underlying application framework), as well as all the modules that
provide the Java SE, Java EE, PHP, JavaScript and Groovy features of

Included in the above are the DEPENDENCIES, DISCLAIMER, LICENSE, and
NOTICE files, as well as a README file with build instructions, which
are the same as these:
https://github.com/apache/netbeans/blob/release111/README.md

How (and what) to try out with the release:

1. Download the artefact to be voted on and unzip it.
2. Check that the artefact does not contain any jar files, except for:
 -
platform/autoupdate.services/test/unit/src/org/netbeans/api/autoupdate/data/empty.jar

 - enterprise/payara.common/test/unit/data/subdir/nottaDir-5.0.jar
which are only jars by their name
3. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file
4. Build it using the README provided by the artefact.
5. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by
the build process and try running it.

Apache NetBeans Java EE 8 Support Repository (In Progress)

This repository consists of the modified modules required to enable Java EE
8 support in Apache NetBeans 11.0. The sources in this repository are in
progress and there may still be bugs or some missing functionality. Once
approved, these sources will be used to create a pull request for the
inclusion of Java EE 8 support in Apache NetBeans proper.

To use these sources, follow these steps:

1.

Download the Apache NetBeans 11.0 sources, which can be found at the
following link:https://netbeans.apache.org/download/nb110/nb110.html
2.

Once the Apache NetBeans 11.0 sources have been downloaded and extracted
to a directory on your machine, clone this repository to your machine.
3.

Overwrite the "enterprise" directory of the Apache NetBeans 11.0 sources
with the entire contents of the "enterprise" directory in this repository.
4.

Copy the cluster.properties file, which resides within the nbbuild
directory of this repository, into the nbbuild directory of the Apache
NetBeans 11.0 sources.
5.

Build the Apache NetBeans 11.0 sources using the directions contained in
the Apache NetBeans README.
6.

Once Apache NetBeans 11.0 has been built, navigate into the
nbbuild/netbeans/etc directory and open the netbeans.conf file. Set the
netbeans_jdkhome property within the file equal to the path of the JDK you
plan to target for Java EE deployment.

Example Using Zulu JDK 8:
netbeans_jdkhome=/Java_Dev/OpenJDK/zulu8.36.0.1-ca-jdk8.0.202-macosx_x64

1. Run Apache NetBeans and use a new userdir, as follows, from within
the nbbuild/netbeans directory:

./bin/netbeans --userdir "/path/to/userdir/name"

- Note: You will be prompted to install Oracle JS Parser and nbjavac the
first time you attempt to add a server or create a new Java EE project

** In this early release, you may have to kill the netbeans process after
installing Oracle JS Parser and nbjavac. After you have killed the process,
you can restart Apache NetBeans and begin to use for Java EE 8 development.

And I still think it would be good to freeze master at branch point
for anything other than fixes intended for the next release, and run
merge windows for new features after the releases are done.

I'd be happy to consider being release manager this time around, as
discussed last time, if we do something along these lines. I'm not so
keen to release manage with further cherry picking on to the
release110 branch. If it's purely about bug fixes / improvements on
select modules, can't they be done separately via the update centre?

Best wishes,

Also we need the know-how to be public how to generate the splash

well!

Thank you in advance!

Now comes the tasks of "un-incubating" all the resources we have, in the
