I just want to let you know the following:

On the 10th and 11th of April 2013 a German conference on free office 
suites and on OpenDocument is taking place in Berlin [1] - it is the 
OpenDocument-Kongress für Wirtschaft und Verwaltung.
There conference language will be German and is refered to 
representatives from German businesses and public authorities which are 
using or want to use free office produtivity software and/or the 
OpenDocument file format.

Topics of the conference according to the call for paper [2] are:

- Increase of the productivity via field-centric extensions for

Just a quick question for my understanding. can you use the SNAPSHOT tag on
a different revision level in a branch than in trunk ?

I thought any tag was global, and if that is correct we might want to
have another tag, so we dont mix branches/trunk.

I am planning to do something similar for the l10n branch, where I expect
the po file generation to be available next week.

you define exactly the revision you want to use on trunk or a branch. I
see there no difference.

My understanding is that we have limited resources on the build bots and
that we should manage carefully what we want build regularly.

I would love to see a flexible mechanism where we can start on demand a
build on revision xy from trunk or any branch and can download the
results. It would help people to verify bigger changes on all platforms
without setting up all environments again. Some prefer to work on
Windows, others prefer Linux or Mac or BSD.

Yes, but you define the SNAPSHOT tag to a specific revision independent of
trunk or branch. In other words the SNAPSHOT tag cannot have revision x in
trunk and y in a branch.

I am sure you know that aoo-w7ia2 (windows) is already being build every
day. L10n is also being build regulary.

Me too, but that is not what I meant...the current snap build uses trunk,
and would need to be changed to use ia2, or alternatively we simply use the
build already in place.

Thank you for all the help!

I will try and organize each letter in my alphabet from largest roman
characters to our single 1 roman letters.

Although our syllabics are 1 letter, it could be up to 4 roman letters to
get the one letter, example, 'ᐃ' is typed with 'i', 'ᐄ' is typed 'ii',  'ᖡ'
we would type 'qlii', and sometimes other variants of the dialects use 'e'
to get the same letter as we would for our dialect 'ᐃ', 'ee' for 'ᐄ' and
'qlee' for 'ᖡ'.

So with VB, I organized them from our largest possible roman letters, and
went down to our single letters, and at the same time, all possible
variants to get each letter.

We will discuss this further Jurgen after your vacation :) I look forward
to having Inuktitut included in one of the best word processors, office
suite in the World! This will make many translators happy who work daily on
documents and depend on technology for their everyday lives.

installers or detailed instructions for how to get these archived
builds to work.  But since we're changing directories and such with
the 4.0 version it probably makes sense to get the install/configure
side tested early as well.

On Microsoft Windows, the Input Methods are handled at the Operating System 
level.  I don't doubt that there are apps that use their own, but the 
system-wide IMEs are very handy.

MORE DETAILS

For any chosen language one can specify what is the current OS display 
language, the Input method (keyboard and character set type), and also, in 
Windows 8 at least, handwriting.  Oh, and this influences the touch keyboard 
that you can pop up on the screen and use with a mouse or with a touch screen. 
The touch keyboard can switch languages without changing the language that the 
OS is set for.
That is a bit easier than changing the key mappings on a physical keyboard in 
some cases.  

(I found 11 mappings for English alone, including the 3 Dvoraks and the 
Canadian Multilingual Standard.  I just tried the Italian layout. È molto 
semplice.  あん。- Japanese is harder (I have no idea what I just typed.) The 
layout diagram disappears if I key on the physical keyboard though.  Must find 
a way around that.)

I have no longer XP, but perhaps it is the same problem as on Windows7. 
On Windows7 the path to the user settings is far to deep. Try this: 
Unzip the archive, than move the folder OpenOffice.org 3 to the root 
of the partition and try to start there.

Using an installer you would need to tell how to make an administrative

All platforms have the same problem.

I basically cleaned up my code last minute and removed a service that,
while not really used, leads to an exception when it is not even
registered.  And it is triggered by (hopefully) the only place that does
not catch exceptions.

I put up new developer builds which, I hope, will work better.  The
Linux build is done with a current Ubuntu so that anyone who wants to
try it out also needs a fairly recent Linux.  The old 10.04 Ubuntu
virtual box is just too slow to be of any real use.


Now it does not crash. But when you are in text edit in Impress, the 
properties pane do not react. It shows the actual character styles, but 
you cannot change them. And the sidebar in Draw is still empty.

 That's further than I got.  The built-in Windows XP did not like that
 archive.  I took Andre's hint to rename the destination top-level
 directory.  But then on extract it complains that some files are
 password protected.  I extracted the rest but then I get an exception
 when trying to run soffice.


 I have no longer XP, but perhaps it is the same problem as on Windows7. On
 Windows7 the path to the user settings is far to deep. Try this: Unzip the
 archive, than move the folder OpenOffice.org 3 to the root of the
 partition and try to start there.


OK, that worked.  Thanks.  I can load the side panel in Writer and Calc.  Cool!

 How much more effort would it be to create a Windows installer?  If we
 want coverage by QA volunteers (and we're waiting) we'll either need
 installers or detailed instructions for how to get these archived
 builds to work.  But since we're changing directories and such with
 the 4.0 version it probably makes sense to get the install/configure
 side tested early as well.


 Using an installer you would need to tell how to make an administrative
 installation and how to edit the bootstrap.ini file. That is not better.

Now that the 3.4.1 language respin is released I'd like to bring back
to mind this earlier discussion.   There are (we assume) many users
out there still running OOo 3.3.0 or earlier.  Even months after 3.4.0
and 3.4.1 were released we get a steady stream of upgrades from OOo
3.3.0, 3.2.1 and 3.2.0.

But we're only advertising upgrades for those cases where we have a
translation for that language.  I wonder if we could use the upgrade
notification message as a form of recruitment for translation help in
AOO 4.0?

One idea would be this:

1) Create a landing page on the website that makes the following points:

a) You are running an older version of OpenOffice.  A more recent one
is available, AOO 3.4.1, available in the following languages...

b) We're working on a new 4.0 release with many exciting feature
(point to blog post).  We'd love to support your language, but need
help with translation.  If you want to help, or know someone who might
be interested, here is where to find more information on how to get
involved...

c) Sign up here on the announcement mailing list (or Facebook, or
Twitter or Google+) to be notified when AOO 4.0 is released

2) Then enable update notifications for all languages not included in
AOO 3.4.1, and point the user to the new landing page.

3) After a week revert the update configuration file on our server to
the earlier state, so users do not get this message repeatedly.  (By
default it should check only once a week).

I think something like the above would be great to do in the near
term, since it would give enough time for new volunteers to complete
translations in time for AOO 4.0.
