Re: Native Language and Localization pages on cwiki might benefit from some organization

Is there anything we can do better? I think there is a problem and that is AOO the first Apache software project is primarily intended for end users, not to experts. Between a software like the Apache web server and AOO this respect, there is a big difference. What is the concrete 'problem'? Specialists and experts have no problems with international structures, especially not with English as the project language, but for many end users is to difficult. They do not understand structures, they can not communicate in English and therefore they remain in distance to the project. What could be the solution, especially if one looks at the experience with OpenOffice.org? I think we need another real local communities as part of the international community. This is not an easy topic that is not an issue we can resolve quickly here, but it is an important issue which we need to clarify in the next few years. Yes, I mean years, because it will take so long because many things must be discussed with care. Local is not only better than nothing, it is vital! Yes, thank you, at this point we are in total agreement. I don't get the directly. OpenOffice is marketed by its users, by its volunteers. It's simple, directly is the AOO project, and no, marketing is not made by users. (because not all users simultaneously project volunteers are) Not directly is also 8for example) the marketing from the PrOOo-box, because although only OO community members collaborate applies the PrOOo box formally as 'third party', ie not belonging directly to the project. The fact that we have an international marketing list does not mean that we only admit centrally organized marketing activities. This is clear for me, but there is also a practical side: in not a few cases, we have to decide whether we approve of local activities, even if they are not coordinated internationally, or whether we do without it. English To many falls very heavy, so many local helper does not want to help if we make the to international coordination. A few weeks ago we had on the German mailing list, a discussion in which, for example, Jürgen meant a FAQ website must always also primarily in the project language (English) exist. I understand this desire , but if we are guided by generally because we lose potential accomplices , namely those which, although would be willing to create a German -language FAQ, but not simultaneous are willing to make an English translation of this FAQ . Another example is that we do not have a German-language forum, and currently no people who want to do it. There are, however, for more than 10 years, the outstanding German Forum http://de.openoffice.info. Would not it be pragmatically useful if we the users completely equal recommend this Forum? If I point to such problems often I get just a shrug. The international marketing exists to help local activities, not to kill them: if you need a presentation about OpenOffice to translate in German, or if you need someone to design materials that you want to print and distribute, the marketing list is at your service. The project can even pay for marketing materials, so feel free to ask. Yes, that is clear. Even I know that, and Detlef is currently in the process to make a request, but let me say the following: Is Apache clear how much money is involved here? It's not just about money for flyers or similar materials, but also for technical equipment or sometimes money for travel expenses. I myself volunteer worked in the German OOo-community more than 7 years (I mean OpenOffice_.org_ in this case) and I know quite accurately the former costs for marketing in Germany, those were _one year_ significantly above 10,000.00 Euros (approximately U.S. $ 13,750.00 at today's exchange rate), only for running costs. And this money means only the money which has itself collected the German OOo-community, and not money from SUN or Oracle. I write this not because we currently need so much money, but I write it to generally designate how big the financial needs when AOO similar successfully developed as OOo earlier. And because we can estimate this, it is time to look for ways like this is to ensure in the future. I definitely don't want to see more complex combinations of factors, just think like a user. The case Andrea described above should be more theoretical if an active community is behind a translation. Theoretical? It is very concrete. We already dropped (and then rescued) Norwegian, Danish and others due to missing coordination: we did have active volunteers, but they missed a deadline and we didn't include it. I can find it acceptable for a major release, but not for the minor versions (4.0, 4.1, 4.2...). Note: if the late README change to correct the minimal OS X version had been imported into Pootle correctly, we would have had all languages at 99.99% just before RC time... and that would have been interesting! I would still prefer the 100% rule. But anyway it's my personal opinion. +1, not requiring 100% UI (which is quite easy to do for any translator) is a dangerous path. Who is this dangerous to? Intermittent support is very bad for users and it hurts our reputation more than a missing minimal translation update. For minor updates I would focus in converting users into volunteers: the new JavaScript magic on the download page could display a Help needed warning when someone downloads a currently unmaintained language (which will still have very high coverage, since we only add a language when it reaches 100%). And for major updates (here I mean 5.x, assuming that major UI changes are accompanied by major localization changes) we would start clean and require 100% again. Either the documents can be cleaned up and confidential data get removed or the company contacted another company where special agreements can be done. In the case of a crash, you are always on the receiver side, meaning that the DOCX document causing the crash is something that people sent you. And these people may be uninterested in problems with OpenOffice. Besides the various options for anonymizing a document either on the sender or receiver side, already discussed in the thread and quite interesting in themselves, are there other options involving only the document and (a specially configured version of) OpenOffice? I mean, if the first thing a developer does on a crash is to obtain a meaningful stacktrace and analyze it, and the document becomes mostly irrelevant at that point, then a stacktrace could be enough to improve the quality of OpenOffice without needing to access confidential data. Or is that not enough to work with? A stacktrace might be enough. But from my experience at least half of the crashes I had fixed are sympthoms on errors which occur much earlier in the processing. Thus, in most cases a sample document is needed to fix a crash. But a stacktrace could be the first information which should be share - in the one or the other case this might be enough to fix the crash. Best regards, Oliver. [PROPOSAL] - additional text for the Update Notification of installed Mac OS X versions [was: Re: [RELEASE] urgent request - activation of Update Notification for our AOO 4.1.0 release]

As I would like to consider the change in the supported architecture I will work on a solution in the next days. One possible solution: For the Mac OS update notifications, instead of sending the user to the download page, send them to a special Mac upgrade page. That page can explain that there is a new 4.1 release but it has a new prereq for OS X Lion. This would be a very simple, uncluttered page. Then it would have a link that says something like I have OS X 10.6 or above, which would then take them to the download site. If we keep it simple it could easily be translated for the native language sites. Yes, that would be a possible solution to our problem. I also figured out that our update notification message in the application could display an additional custom text which can be provided via the Update XML feed. The current message has two parts - status and description. The status is like this (e.g. for 4.0.0 English-US version): status OpenOffice 4.1.0 is available. The installed version is OpenOffice 4.0.0. Note: Before downloading an update, please ensure that you have sufficient access rights to install it. A password, usually the administrator's or root password, may be required. /status The description is like this (e.g. for 4.0.0 English-US version): description The automatic download of the update is currently not available. Click 'Download...' to download OpenOffice 4.1.0 manually from the web site. /description The description can be extended by further text provided by the Update XML feed. I propose to include the following text for installed Mac OS X versions of OpenOffice: additional text Only for Mac OS X version 10.7 or never /additional text Ideally, this additional text should be translated. As the text snippets ('Only for', 'version' and 'or never') are simple I would use Google translate to get the corresponding translations. Looking for summer project
Hi all,I'm a third year at Bucknell University and won't be able to work a full time position this summer due to an athletic commitment, so I was hoping to help out here. I have several years of coding experience with C and python, as well as SVN and GitHub, and will most likely have about 10 hours per week to devote to a project. Please let me know if you can help me find a project, in the mean time I'll peruse the repo. Thanks, Alex Moore — Sent from Mailbox for iPad
Re: Looking for summer project
Our wiki has a lot of documentation on development process, style and of course the best way to start is by building AOO from source. So please make sure you are able to consult our Build guide and experiment with the initial test hacks so you can learn your way around them. Some are a bit outdated so make sure to advice where it needs some fixes. Regardless, here is some of the links that could be helpful: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Uno/Cpp/Tutorials/Introduction_to_Cpp_Uno Make sure to check back if you face any stops in the process, or just experience a different output. Remember including your OS/version compiler, etc. On 5/5/14, Alex Moore shmal.mo...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all,I'm a third year at Bucknell University and won't be able to work a full time position this summer due to an athletic commitment, so I was hoping to help out here. No change as long as this option is not enabled 2. Option enabled and ODF 1.2 encryption is now default Would you happen to have a link to this in the ODF 1.2 spec? I can't seem to find this...sorry. 2.1 New documents stored with password can't be loaded on older office versions 2.2 New or existing documents stored in older versions can still be loaded in the new office 2.3 Documents stored in older version (with the old algorithm) and loaded in the new office works as expected. Changes made in the document and stored with the new office still use the old algorithm and the document can later on opened in older office versions. From my pov of view there is still room for improvements but it is a first useful step to move forward to a more secure algorithm and give the user the opportunity to tweak the settings in the preferred way. I would like to propose to integrate this change and test it how well it works. Any opinions? Well keep in mind it is a minimal enhancement to make use of what we already have. There is still room for improvements ... Re: [DOWNLOAD][PROPOSAL] How to download another version than offered in the green box?

Looks better, but the hover text has gone. It was useful... I get the text What is the difference between full installation and language pack? when hovering the mouse over the (i) icon. Have you done something different? I get hover text for the download and report links, but not for the (i). This applies to Firefox and Opera 12.17 on WinXP, and Firefox on OS X (Mavericks) Chrome shows the (i) hover, but the download and report texts are missing - I only see the (i) and the link icon. I do see the download hovers if the mouse is moved over the blank space to the left of the (i) The drop-downs are correctly preset, but there is no info in the light green box. This is true for Chrome on WinXP and OS/X, and for Safari and Opera 20.0 on OS/X [I think Opera 20 is based on Chrome] IE8/WinXP is completely broken; no content in the drop-down boxes and no download or report text. So none of the Win/XP or OS/X browsers are fully working for me. - Added a Report broken link - pointing to the debug webpage. I clicked on the report button. The test page that appears needs to have some introductory text to tell users what to do. Yes, like I wrote right below. ;-) For the moment it's just to see that something is working. The icon alone is maybe not meaningful enough, therefore an additional text link. (Of course the debug webpage needs further work to really work as report function.) - All not primary important data are now in the sub-box. Now it looks more clean and the focus is set for downloading only. - Links: - I've moved and deleted links and also adjusted the headlines. - In the nav bar as well as in the colored boxes. - Of course it's just a suggestion and can be discussed/changed. I think the download links could be more descriptive (there's plenty of room) - e.g. Download full installation package (including language pack) and Download language add-on pack only This is were I need some help *what* to write - text or button or both or something else ... So, thanks for your suggestion. As an aside, the information page about language packs could perhaps describe how dictionaries compare with language packs. Do language packs include any dictionaries? Or do they just include the text strings used in the application? I found the page quite difficult to follow. OK, I will improve the text. What is not yet working: - The version drop-down-box has still no effect for others than 4.1.0. It's a bigger effort as I've to take into account every available build for every release in the past. - The [Reset] button is now not working as expected, however maybe it's indeed no longer necessary? What do you think? The reset button could be dropped. OK Thanks for your feedback. Marcus What are the next steps: - Make the version drop-down-box work for older releases. - Improve the styling of the both download links. - Combine the both green boxes. - And further suggestions from you. Thanks in advance for testing. :-) Marcus Am 05/03/2014 12:41 AM, schrieb Marcus (OOo): I've done some further work. http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/index_droplist.html What is working: - Filesizes are shown for selected full install + langpack. - Checksum links are shown for selected full install + langpack. - When choices are done a little help icon is shown. Click on it to get to a help text for full install vs. langpack. - Some release data is shown like in the green box. What is not yet working: - The version dropdown box has no effect yet but it shows already how it could work (likely). - I've not tested with all browsers. So, maybe something is not working. What are the next steps: - Reduce the additional links in the green box and re-work in the right hand nav bar - delete duplicates, change order/positions, delete if not needed here, etc. In general, this should result in a clean-up. - Make the version drop-down box work to choose from older releases.
