After skimming the native-language status page, I found these issues:

(1) while the website is "maintained", and the software is "current",
people may think that their help isn't needed. Here are a few phrasings
that could improve this misconception:
"maintained; more volunteers are welcome", or
"maintained; a few volunteers", or
"maintained by 3 volunteers"
etc.
(2) In addition to the website and software columns, I suggest to add a
Help System column, which can really lag behind the software translation,
and isn't apparent in the current table.

Thanks Rob for the detailed download statistics. The CSV is very useful for
the English version, though it's less detailed for localized versions).

The cross-over curve between new & previous versions interests me; maybe
I'll look more into it, in the future.

The home page is already quite cluttered. But this could fit in the
footer. We currently have a 203x61 feather on the right hand side in the
footer. The logo Apache provides for ApacheCon would be 234x60, so quite
similarly sized. We could accommodate it in the footer, to the left.

I tried all the options discussed, but it didn't fit at all in the
header or in the download page (which in turn is already complex
enough). So I implemented the above solution, and you'll see it in the
site footer.

If anyone can do better, just improve it, no problem. But it's important
to have ApacheCon visible.

the footer is actually looking good and the graphic fits pretty well
(size and layout).

However, it's on the bottom and for such temporary and visibility-needed
things not the best location. Therefore I've created 2 test webpapges:

http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/index_asfcon.html
http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/index_asfcon.html

Simple layout but it could be aligned more to the general page design.

What do you all think?

The detail should be the same for the localized versions as well.
Where it gives numbers by platform and by version, this is for all
languages together, not just English. Then you have the columns for
total downloads per day by language.

The transition from version to version is interesting, I agree. Where
it happens quickly, say in 1 or 2 days, it shows that we coordinated
everything well, and had the website, update notifications, 3rd party
links to the downloads, etc., all changing over at the same time.
But even then we still have many downloads of older versions. This
suggests that (maybe) there are some 3rd party links to our website
still pointing to old versions.

Coming back to this message from months ago: I think that you made most
of them obsolete (and this is excellent!) by writing the new

http://www.openoffice.org/projects/native-lang.html

Reviewing each of them, I think we can do as follows:

#1
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Native+Language+Projects
dies and is redirected to http://openoffice.apache.org/native-lang.html
(where I made some updates)

Its child page
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Committers+native+languages
is unmaintained and will simply be redirected to
http://people.apache.org/committers-by-project.html#openoffice

#2 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Localization+Plan

This is not a localization plan at all, but a set of technical
instructions, to be moved to
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Pootle_User_Guide

#3
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Localization+Planning

This is a simple list of links and it can stay if links exist to it, but
we could just remove it altogether.

#4
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Localization+Volunteers

Outdated, but all lists are outdated. I would keep the URL but make it a
child page of
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Directory+of+Volunteers

The only site from which we recommend that one download is
www.openoffice.org/download
This will redirect automatically to SourceForge servers, where the files are
stored.

If one is in any doubt about either the completeness of the download or its
integrity, one should verify the checksum of the downloaded file before
installing, using the methods set out in
http://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html

If you have downloaded from some other site, as seems likely from your post,
you should undertake an indepth virus and malware scan, using latest
definitions.

On both of these, what I see is that the notice is being partially
covered by the blue navigation areas.

Generally, I think this notice would be better on the home page than
other pages.
Any chance we could relocate this to the bottom area maybe between the
W3C button and the end of the right side navigation element?

The "outdated" is in the "OpenOffice availability" column which applies
to product packaging, not the site. In other words, we do not have an
sr-latn language release. Is this confusing? Should we use a different
term at the top of that column?

You can see that under "website" it says maintained, of which you are
doing an excellent job.

The home page is already quite cluttered. But this could fit in the
footer. We currently have a 203x61 feather on the right hand side in the

similarly sized. We could accommodate it in the footer, to the left.

the footer is actually looking good and the graphic fits pretty well
(size and layout).

However, it's on the bottom and for such temporary and visibility-needed
things not the best location. Therefore I've created 2 test webpapges:

http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/index_asfcon.html
http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/index_asfcon.html

Simple layout but it could be aligned more to the general page design.

What do you all think?

I wanted to bring the attention to the top - away from the bottom.

Sure, it would be possible to put it there. Do you still see an
advantage to have it a few pixels higher than instead of leaving it in
the footer?

Thanks

Well, you can download AOO 4.1.1 from Serbain-latn site:
http://www.openoffice.org/sr-latn/download/
About Serbian-cyrl and Sebrian-latn, it is the one language, with two
different orthography.
For now, the problem is how cyrilic version, with some apropriate code,
transform in latinic version (transliteration is what is necessary).

hello Akshpreet and Vikram and welcome to Apache OpenOffice.

Given what you've told us so far, it seems you are well-positioned for a
variety of tasks within this project.

As a start, you would probably benefit by taking a look at:
* the Get Involved page: http://openoffice.apache.org/get-involved.html
* the Developer FAQ page: http://openoffice.apache.org/developer-faqs.html
* the Introduction to Development page:
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-development.html
* the Quality Assurance page: http://openoffice.apache.org/qa.html

We always have a variety of areas that we are working on, so its
difficult to narrow this down exactly. We an always use help with bug
fixes and QA.

Please get back to us after you've looked at some of the suggested
resources.

The templates in English can be found from:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/content/xx/

so you may want index.html from this area?

Also see the readme.txt from this area.

I tried all the options discussed, but it didn't fit at all in the

I'm just wondering if the top is too busy already for this addition.

I would need to see both versions before I could answer this I think. :/

Also, maybe see (random, I didn't look at all sites):

for additional placement ideas. I am liking the News column idea of

header or in the download page (which in turn is already complex
enough). So I implemented the above solution, and you'll see it in the
 site footer.

If anyone can do better, just improve it, no problem. But it's
 important
 to have ApacheCon visible.

I'm just wondering if the top is too busy already for this addition.

I would need to see both versions before I could answer this I think. :/

I was playing with this a bit in Firebug - just to add to the mix. I like the
'news' of Apachecon above the fold with the thought that it could be an area
for future meetings and announcements if desired. I am thinking that the bar
across the width of the page makes it stand apart from the download buttons,

Thanks for your work on this.

And, I imagine my previous comments about this might not have made any
sense. :/

In FF 31.0, the ApacheConEU in the bottom left corner is not showing up
at all! So thanks for these images, or I wouldn't have known it was
there at all despite Andrea mentioning it. (yes, I do see it in the
actual code however.)

I can see it with Konqueror.

So, maybe the class specified for the image is causing this?

OK, now on to your samples.

from your renderings, I like either the footer placement or #2.

We normally use the Announcement banner -- the first blue line -- for
announcements, though this is first I can remember having a graphic as
really an integral part of the announcement. So, in this respect, I
think ApacheCon is a special case.
