Best regards Philippe Roig === Is it not time to _*SERIOUSLY*_ review the distribution of our binaries via SourceForge? Rory O'Farrell and others dutifully expend their valuable time advising "unaware" users NOT to click on download links and buttons after they are redirected to the SourceForge mirror page. While commendable, this is a "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" approach. No matter what efforts SourceForge make to "weed out" fraudulent and malware links, our mailing lists and forums continue to receive a steady stream of download problem messages from "unaware" users. There is no way to prove this discourages individuals and organizations from using AOO software, but continuously published reports of AOO distributing "unwanted" and/or "malware" programs reflects badly on us and by association the ASF. I have no personal "gripe" against SourceForge and Roberto Galoppini's support in this area is invaluable. However, I do not understand, or find any reasonable explanation, why our download page does not redirect to the ASF's own mirror network: https://www.apache.org/mirrors/ where our binaries are already being served by 200+ mirrors around the world. Andrea Pescetti wrote: On 07/03/2015 Dave Barton wrote: Simon Phipps wrote: when one does not have access to the privileged conversations of the PMC, actions that use those conversations as justification appear hostile, as do dismissive PMC member reactions Well, if it is true (and it is true) that the private list is visible to 400+ people (more than this list's subscribers) and that, while mistakes are surely possible and surely have happened, the private list is not being abused and discussions that do not belong there are often moved to the dev list with full context, then I feel it's important to point it out. You are suggesting a usage pattern of the private list that is far beyond reality. Apache OpenOffice is a model of transparency compared to other, even open source, projects. The importance some people give to private conversations is really, really exaggerated. But if we continue discussing this we fall easily in a conspiracy theory model, so I prefer that we get more concrete. On my behalf, be reassured that when I see a private conversation that ought to be public I will point it out. I have not and as far as I can tell neither has Simon, claimed a general lack of transparency within the project and I totally reject your suggestion that I have made any exaggerated claims or I am touting some kind of conspiracy theory. However, there was a failure of communication in the original PMC FAQ update thread. +100% Thank you Simon. What about actually doing something? Is such a hostile and insulting attack necessary? When I first posted to the original thread I had already collected the information I thought was being asked for and was ready to ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING by updating the page, if that was acceptable. You Simon and Dave combined already have all privileges needed to keep the page with moderators' names updated if you believe it's really important for you. If you two pledge to keep it updated, I, for one, will see my primary reason for removing names (i.e., they are blatantly outdated) addressed. If you are willing to help, we can surely fix details. This is no longer about the trivial issue of keeping moderator's names on a page, or if Simon and I think it is important. The decision on that matter has been taken and as far as I am concerned it is now closed. The issue here is that in the original thread both Simon and I asked totally innocent, non-controversial questions and received answers which ranged from, the information is already there (if you know where to find it), to being accused of being on some kind of name publishing ego trip. I do not question that the ASF strives to be open and transparent, but in the area of community building the AOO project is sadly lacking. Comments, such as you have expressed here are, to say the least, discouraging. There is _NO_ need to show moderators email addresses, the list owner address works perfectly well. It is _NOT_ important where the information is made available. The one and only thing I suggested is that we have a simple, easy way for any of us to check ensure that we have adequate list moderator coverage. Maintenance of the information is trivial: 1. A new moderator is authorised and at the same time his name is added to the page. 2. An existing moderator opts-out of the responsibility and at the same time his name is removed from the page. If people want to tell the world what they do in such detail, they should publish it, we should not publish peoples names without the consent of the people. It was published for years, so why now do we have something to hide? My concern is not so much having the list of names, but more that it is forced to participate. If people added themself to the list it would be ok because it would be their own choice. rgds jan i Again, I don't understand forced to participate. Nobody is forced to participate in this project by simply identifying the role they have volunteered to undertake. Your concerns are unfounded, Simon Phipps, myself and other moderators openly publish our identities and email addresses on this list and other public forums, so why would we become delicate sensitive little things about our names being published for a useful purpose. Cut to the chase: You did not answer my question about the names of the TWO moderators for our API mailing list because: 1. You don't know. 2. There is only ONE moderator for that list. 3. This information is not publicly available. My reason for persisting with this somewhat trivial issue is that we (those with an interest in project at large, not just Infra, the PMC, or some other sacred inner sanctum) would not have a ready source of reference if moderation, for whatever reason, ceased. Unlikely in the case of the dev list, but a definite possibility for the API list if the one current moderator got run over by a bus. If it will alleviate your concerns, I will post to the owner of each of our public lists asking for an affirmative response to the question of publishing moderator names on the mailing list page. See also the post from Dennis, who summarises this in more succinct and less abrasive terms. Thanks, S. Re: Concerns about the AOO community
Chuck Davis wrote: I've seen quite a number of new people show up here lately indicating interest coming from someplace. If one out of 10 of them sticks and becomes a regular contributor the project is in a very good position I think. Agreed. My observations regarding LO: 1) They've copied some features from MS Office that make it equally difficult to useIt's not as pleasant to use as AOO. Can you please give some specific examples of what you mean by copied some features from MS Office? I have been an OOo user since Sun (theoretically) open sourced the code and today I use/test both AOO and LO. Can you please enlighten me in what way LO is more difficult to use than AOO? I am obviously missing something, because I find them equally pleasant to use. It's very unfortunate the distributions have adopted LO in lieu of AOO. That's mainly because a number of the distros were already unhappy about the control Sun/Oracle held over the code. When TDF/LO was formed some of code from the (distro driven) Go-OO fork was merged into LO. This happened well before Oracle gave the OOo trademark and domain name to the ASF. 2) Their constant AOO bashing is a real turn-off for me and I hope others as well. I don't think I want their people in our camp. Sorry, but this is just FUD. Ignoring the Weir - Vignoli blog battle and other external sources, please give examples of Their constant AOO bashing on any the TDF/LO controlled sources (eg. website, mailing lists, etc.). For every instance you can sight, I can match two for one the near vitriol I have seen poured out on this list alone. In another part of this thread there is talk of better cooperation between the two projects. Comments such as I don't think I want their people in our camp. only serve to further promote the silly negative us them attitude. It is not a competition, because neither project is selling anything. Reality Check: Other than the occasional defector :)) (in both directions) you don't have to concern yourself about their people moving into your camp. There is no possibility that TDF is going give up years of hard work and expense and hand LO over to the ASF, any more than there is of the ASF handing AOO over to TDF. 3) They seem to be very proud of getting rid of Java and replacing it with Python. I've looked at Python a little and it seems to me any language dependent on indentation rather than syntax is justdumb! There is nothing wrong with Java -- especially now that OpenJDK is the reference implementation and is being worked on by every major player except MS. The movement to get rid of Java has been around even before Sun sold out to Oracle. There are developers working on AOO code today who are on record promoting the removal or reduced reliance on Java. Python is also supported by AOO. 4) LO seems to have major QC issues. The quality is definitely several notches below where AOO rests in my experience. Is this just fan-boy talk, or can you sight anything to substantiate this (apparently ill-informed) claim. I closely follow the development of both projects and my experience is very different to yours. These are just my observations as a long time OpenOffice user. And Apache has some very interesting related projects (i.e. ODF Toolkit) that can propel ODF as a standard reporting framework as well as the new project to read and write OOXML for document exchange. True. Hopefully it will not be too long before the fruits of these projects are incorporated into AOO. The TDF has been closely involved with external projects working on improvements to the ODF - OOXML document compatibility. I don't have the details to hand right now, but IIRC the code improvements are, or will be, made available under Apache License, Version 2.0 My advice: stay the course. Emphasize quality and dependability over glitz. If developers are not attracted to AOO on those terms they're not developers the project needs. Those of us in business just need a tool to get our work done and it doesn't need to be fancy -- just dependable. LO falls on it's face at this point. Please, please, please can we stop this childish nonsense. There is no reason why we should care, one way or the other, if LO is worse or better than AOO. Our only interests should be: 1. Making AOO as good as we can possibly make it. 2. Where possible work cooperatively with TDF and others in the interest of promoting and improving ODF. We already do this on matters of security. It is highly unlikely that AOO is going to die or disappear in the foreseeable future and the same holds true for LO. If, for whatever reason. the existence of TDF/LO upsets anyone here, I suggest they get over it and move on. Try this: * Click inside the (header) month cell (eg. January). * From Calc's main menu select the /Format - Merge Cells - Merge and Center Cells/ option. If my guess is correct, you will then have removed the merge and reinstated the 12 individual cells. Hope this helps. Dave

Obviously there is no point contacting 8daysaweek, because their home page makes it clear. Tutorials for OpenOffice is now being worked on, but there is a lot of material to be updated, so don't expect to see immediate changes. This site also handles a number of support questions every day. I am awaiting a reply from OpenOfficeSchool. It is a shame that the ecosystem that surrounded the original OpenOffice.org project appears to be fading away. +1 Original Message From: Jürgen Schmidt jogischm...@gmail.com To: dev@openoffice.apache.org Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2013 10:13:14 +0100 Hi all, this is a call for vote on releasing a minor respin of Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 to support 8 new languages (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian Bokmal, Polish, Korean, Basque, Asturian, Scottish Gaelic). The Hungarian version is repackaged and a Hungarian dictionary is now included. This release is a minor update to support further languages but no bug fixes. We decided to keep the effort minimal and updated only the new languages and no further minor bug fixes. It is the last minor update including incubating in the name and we do that to integrate smoothly in the naming scheme of the current release and to keep the download simple. The source release for AOO 3.4.1 will be renewed and is based now on revision 1435053 from branch AOO34. For our broad user base we built and provide convenience binary packages on the same revision for all new languages. The source release candidate can be found under https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341srcrelease The convenience binary full install sets for the new languages can be found under https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341fullsets The convenience binary language packs for the new languages can be found under https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341languagepacks Please vote on releasing this respin package as a complement to our already released Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 (incubating). The vote starts now and will be open for 72 hours until: Saturday, 26 January: 2013-01-26 10:00am UTC+1. The vote of PMC members is binding but we invite all people to vote (non binding) on this RC. Name: d...@openoffice.apache.org OR d...@openoffice.apache.org (I don't have a strong preference for the name) Moderators: Please respond if you can volunteer as moderator. We should aim for 2 or 3 geographically dispersed. I'll wait 72 hours, and if no objections we can ask Andrea to submit the form for the new list creation. Regards, -Rob Hi Rob, I am currently at UTC +1 if you want me to moderate the (long overdue) documentation list. For reasons I might explain at another time, moderation is all can contribute to the project for the time being. Although I will try to mentor/guide any newcomers who want to work on user documentation. Regards Dave

That would be most welcome. Regards, Gordon Cairns The stability of OpenOffice is a matter of interaction with your operating system. You need to tell us what your operating system is and what symptoms you are experiencing. You may also find it of use to search the Forum at http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/ I doubt that any such instability is caused by a spam attack; the current spam attack is to the mwiki pages. Just to further clarify Rory's reply. It is not the program itself which came under spam attack, it was the Wiki area of the project's web services. The attack has now been thwarted by an excellent team of hardworking volunteers. Please post back to this list or the user support list us...@openoffice.apache.org with the information Rory suggested for assistance in resolving the issues you are experiencing.
