Note that Andre produced two distinct 0.7 builds. The first one, as he
says above, will run on older systems soo. The second one, which is the
currently available one and was done to fix a last-minute error, only
runs on modern systems, i.e., it requires glibc = 2.17, as discussed
later in this thread.

On Debian it seems you still have glibc = 2.13 so it won't start:
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=debian

(then your problem might be elsewhere, but this is just to say that the
more people can try it out from the message you quote no longer applies)

  Andrea.

I've unpacked the Windows version. It crashes immediately, when I use a text
frame, that is the shape from the T icon. :(

That's further than I got. The built-in Windows XP did not like that
archive. I took Andre's hint to rename the destination top-level
directory. But then on extract it complains that some files are
password protected. I extracted the rest but then I get an exception
when trying to run soffice.

How much more effort would it be to create a Windows installer? If we
want coverage by QA volunteers (and we're waiting) we'll either need
installers or detailed instructions for how to get these archived
builds to work. But since we're changing directories and such with
the 4.0 version it probably makes sense to get the install/configure
side tested early as well.

I have no longer XP, but perhaps it is the same problem as on Windows7.
On Windows7 the path to the user settings is far to deep. Try this:
Unzip the archive, than move the folder OpenOffice.org 3 to the root
of the partition and try to start there.

Using an installer you would need to tell how to make an administrative
installation and how to edit the bootstrap.ini file. That is not better.

Or when I use any other text edit in Impress. The windows version is
not testable.

All platforms have the same problem.

I basically cleaned up my code last minute and removed a service that,
while not really used, leads to an exception when it is not even
registered. And it is triggered by (hopefully) the only place that does
not catch exceptions.

I put up new developer builds which, I hope, will work better. The
Linux build is done with a current Ubuntu so that anyone who wants to
try it out also needs a fairly recent Linux. The old 10.04 Ubuntu
virtual box is just too slow to be of any real use.

Now it does not crash. But when you are in text edit in Impress, the
properties pane do not react. It shows the actual character styles, but
you cannot change them. And the sidebar in Draw is still empty.

Kind regards
Regina

OK, that worked. Thanks. I can load the side panel in Writer and Calc. Cool!

Nice work! I had a look at the first 0.7 build (the one you've now
replaced) and the sidebar is shaping up nicely.

http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Sidebar#Developer_Builds

I see you are using that page as a kind of blog. It's a very nice page,
with useful end-user information and screenshots. So, obligatory
question: why not posting the same (or mostly the same) content to the
OpenOffice project blog? The same monthly updates there would be much
more visible, the project would get proper recognition for the feature
and you could even find a couple new volunteers willing to help...

  Andrea.

I don't know. Probably depends how easy that is.
