Refresh JK httpd-2.4.x binaries [VOTE] ?

2012-03-25 Thread Mladen Turk

Hi,

I build our courtesy windows binaries against httpd-2.4.1-dev
which has a different MMN then 2.4.1 thus refusing to load.
(other binaries are file)

I have removed the tomcat-connectors-1.2.35-windows-i386-http-2.4.x.*
file from dist site and new one are at:
http://people.apache.org/~mturk/tomcat-connectors/jk-1.2.35/binaries/windows/
(just *-http-2.4.x-* files are changed)

Should we vote for putting those on our official dist site?
If so, please use this as a VOTE thread, and with my implicit +1
I'll upload those bins when I collect two more votes.

Regards

I went through the change logs of the last three years and only very few
changes were missing, of which only one was critical, namely the one cited
above.
But I'm fine with announcing that we stop maintaining mod_jk for HTTPD 1.3 after 1.2.35.
The only problem is that then the last release can't be build. Should we provide a
"patches_to_apply_..." directory like httpd does it for important patches?

I'm fine with that.
I'll just say in the ANN that this version does not compile with 1.3 unless you
apply the r1035020. If there will be enough community interest in the future we
can either release 1.2.36 or just stop here and cleanup all the config mess
needed
for supporting both 1.3 and 2.x branches.

DO NOT REPLY [Bug 52983] New: DIGEST auth broken on 6.0.x manager app because of redundant WWW-Authenticate header in 401.jsp

 Bug #: 52983
Summary: DIGEST auth broken on 6.0.x manager app because of
redundant WWW-Authenticate header in 401.jsp
   Product: Tomcat 6
   Version: 6.0.35
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Manager application
AssignedTo: dev@tomcat.apache.org
ReportedBy: ne...@metawerx.net
Classification: Unclassified

Created attachment 28505
  --> https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=28505
patch against 6.0.x trunk removing problematic lines from 401.jsp

The Manager app in 6.0.35 sets WWW-Authenticate in 401.jsp.

However, this seems to be already set elsewhere, and as a result of setting it
again in 401.jsp, DIGEST mode can not be used for the manager app.

>From what I can see, this is fixed in 7.0.x but doesn't seem to have been
backported to 6.0.x yet.

The result is that DIGEST for Tomcat Manager can't be used on Tomcat 6 which is
still very popular.

To demonstrate, I changed 401.jsp to set the header name to
WWW-AuthenticateREDUNDANT and here is the result:

For BASIC:

HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized
Pragma: No-cache
Cache-Control: no-cache
Expires: Thu, 01 Jan 1970 10:00:00 EST
WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="Tomcat Manager Application"
Set-Cookie: JSESSIONID=removed; Path=/manager
WWW-AuthenticateREDUNDANT: Basic realm="Tomcat Manager Application"
Content-Type: text/html
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Vary: Accept-Encoding
Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 03:39:09 GMT
Server: Coyote

For DIGEST:

HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized
Pragma: No-cache
Cache-Control: no-cache
Expires: Thu, 01 Jan 1970 10:00:00 EST
WWW-Authenticate: Digest realm="Tomcat Manager Application", qop="auth",
nonce="removed", opaque="removed"
Set-Cookie: JSESSIONID=removed; Path=/manager
WWW-AuthenticateREDUNDANT: Basic realm="Tomcat Manager Application"
Content-Type: text/html
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Vary: Accept-Encoding
Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 03:44:07 GMT
Server: Coyote

You can clearly see the REDUNDANT header being set here by 401.jsp.

To fix on my local versions, I simply removed the line in 401.jsp (patch1.txt).

However, this deserves a cross-check by someone else before being committed in
case there's some situation where it would remove authentication altogether.

An alternative solution for this version is to check if the header is set, and
only add it where it's not already present (patch2.txt):

  if(!response.containsHeader("WWW-Authenticate"))
response.setHeader("WWW-Authenticater", "Basic realm=\"Tomcat Manager
Application\"");

... but I'll leave that up to you.

Best Regards,
Neale

I understand ( and agree ) with 'no GPL included in a tomcat release',
that's not what I'm proposing.

And it's no longer an issue - it seems they have a separate jar containing
only the class we depend on, which is AL2:

https://github.com/eclipse/jetty.project/blob/master/jetty-npn/src/main/java/org/eclipse/jetty/npn/NextProtoNego.java

npn-api is the jar.

At runtime: if a user wants spdy with AL2, he'll have to use apr and
compile latest JNI. If he wants NIO/BIO - he'll need to independently
download npn-boot.jar and use java7 ( or wait until java7 includes the
needed tls changes ).

Sounds good to me.

The main question is if it's ok to add a build-time dependency on
npn-boot,

Is this required for 7.0.x or just trunk? I'm assuming just trunk.

Since users will still have to download npn-boot.jar ( it contains GPL so
probably can't be distributed with tomcat ) - they could also download a
jar with those 2 classes and the 2 for jio. That's the second option, if
compile-time dep to gpl is not ok.

I think that the compile-time dep on GPL needs to be completely
optional. I have no issue with using such a dep in the release builds
but I image that there are folks downstream who aren't that relaxed. It
should be possible to structure this in such a way that Tomcat can still
be compiled if the GPL'd JAR is not available.

Yes, the company I work for in my day job is one of those that won't be that
relaxed. My CTO has a strict no GPL policy (because our clients also don't
want GPL). Apache is about releasing code under the AL2, and is why it has
been successful. IMHO if this module requires GPL code then it should
permanently stay on github as an optional addon module for Tomcat that can
be downloaded from there, but not included in the normal Tomcat release
which should be a pure AL2 license.

The 3rd option is to have the entire spdy package outside tomcat - but
keep
the hooks ( i.e. 'beforeHandshake', NpnHandler, etc ) - like I'm
proposing

for tomcat7.

That seems excessively complex for the folks that want to use spdy but I
have no issue with that approach.

tomcat connector - jk_status does not update shm correctly

2012-03-25 Thread Le Huy
Hi

I am facing problem in using jkstatus to update subworker lb_factor,
it seems that after changing it, the mod_jk balancer does not change
anything

Looking at source code in trunk, I think that there is bug , I
include herewith the 2 changes that I think will fix the problem,

1) I move update_mult() a head of  jk_lb_push() in update_worker() so
the lb_mult of sub worker can be persisted to shm
2) I reverse the condition using to guard of update shm of subworkder
in jk_lb_push()

Can someone review it ? to be honest I am not very familiar with the code base.

Sounds good to me.

Is this required for 7.0.x or just trunk? I'm assuming just trunk.

That seems excessively complex for the folks that want to use spdy but I
have no issue with that approach.

+Overview
+
+
+
+
+
+
+
+
+
+
+What's JK?
+
+
+
+
+
+JK
+ is a replacement to the elderly mod_jserv.
+It was a completely new Tomcat-Apache plug-in that handles the communication
between Tomcat and Apache.
+
+
+The newest
+JK2
+ is a refactoring of
+JK
+.
+The native part has been completly
+restructured and the configuration has been simplified a lot.
+
+
+JK is more than just an apache module, since it could be used with majors
WebServer :
+
+
+
+
+mod_jk
+ is an Apache module to be used with
+Apache 1.3
+ and
+2.0
+ Webservers.
+
+
+
+isapi
+ is a redirector to be used with
+IIS
+.
+
+
+
+nsapi
+ is a redirector to be used with
+Netscape/iPlanet
+.
+
+
+
+dsapi
+ is a redirector to to be used with
+Domino
+.
+
+
+
+
+
+
+
+Why should I use the JK?
+
+
+
+
+JK was develop to overcome many limitations of its ancestor,
+mod_jserv
+.
+
+
+
+mod_jserv
+ was too complex and because it was ported from Apache/JServ,
+it brought with it lots of JServ specific bits that aren't needed by Apache.
+
+
+Where
+mod_jserv
+ supported only Apache webservers on Unix OS,
+
+JK
+ supports much more web servers and operating systems through
+via a compatibility layer named the
+JK library
+.
+The layered approach provided by the JK library makes it easier to
+support many different webservers and OS.
+
+
+JK offer better support for SSL, that's was a problem with mod_jserv which
couldn't
+reliably identify whether a request was made via HTTP or HTTPS.
+
+
+JK can, using the newer Ajpv13 protocol which relay many SSL informations
required by servlet 2.2 and 2.3 specs.
+
+
+JK offers a lot of different and flexible communications between a Web Server
+and the Tomcat Servlet Engine and could be used today with all of the ASF
Tomcat Engines,
+
+3.2.x
+,
+3.3.x
+,
+4.0.x
+,
+4.1.x
+ and
+5.x
+
+
+
+
+
+
+
+What's the difference between JK and JK2?
+
+
+
+
+JK2 is a refactoring of JK and is much more powerfull.
+
+
+Even if it works with Apache 1.3, JK2 has been developed with Apache 2.0 in
mind,
+and is better suited for multi-threaded servers like IIS, NES/iPlanet. It can
also
+be embeded in other applications and used from java.
+
+
+JK2 improves the modularity and has a better separation between protocol and
physical layer.
+As such JK2 support fast unix-socket, and could be extended to support others
communications
+channels. It is better suited for JNI and may use (in a future version) JDK
1.4 NIO.
+
+
+There is additional support for monitoring, similar with JMX in java. A module
similar
+with mod_status is provided, and additional adapters can be used to interface
and
+provide status and runtime configuration. .
+
+
+The configuration has been changed to follow the component models. Multiple
configuration
+sources can be supported ( in additon to file ) providing better integration
with
+the embeding application. The config layer uses the management layer APIs and
it can
+support persistence for changes done via runtime configuration.
+
+
+Another feature is the JNI mode. Jk2 can be used as a JNI library and provide
access to
+native features to java. For example it provides access to shared memory (
used for
+config and monitoring in a multiprocess environment ), unix domain sockets. It
can
+also provide access to signals, chuid, win registry. All using the same
communication
+mechansim, and supporting both in-process and out-of process modes.
+
+
+
+
+
+
+Are there alternative ways to connect Apache and
Tomcat?
+
+
+
+
+
+Tomcat's AJP stack and httpd-2.1 AJP proxy
+ that is an addition to the mod_proxy of http. It is developped in
httpd-2.1 and integrated in it.
+(See
+AJP proxy
+).
+
+
+
+Tomcat's internal HTTP stack and mod_proxy
+ which is not that bad, but slow,
+well, of course Tomcat didn't have 10/11 years of C routine optimization like
+the Apache Web Server, but it's quite good. The only disadvantage is that it
+looks pretty ridiculous to parse an HTTP request to generate it again
+(exactly the same), and to parse again the response to send it back
unchanged...

Nice. That avoids the commit deluge.

4.1 docs on the way and then I'll probably call it quits for today.

Agreed. That is what I am planning to do.

That is what my modifications to the build script do but you are right
that they depend on the user to svn add / delete as required.

Thanks.

Mark

PS apologies for the svn commit deluge that is heading to the dev list.
The later the version, the bigger the docs.

A note: using sparse checkout feature of svn is handy when dealing
with the site.
E.g. if you are in site/trunk then

svn up --set-depth empty docs/tomcat-3.2-doc

will pull in recently added "tomcat-3.2-doc" subdirectory as empty
one (instead of pulling the whole subtree as the usual "svn up" will
do)

The other subdirectories will be (looking at p.a.o):

svn up --set-depth empty docs/tomcat-3.3-doc
svn up --set-depth empty docs/tomcat-4.0-doc
svn up --set-depth empty docs/tomcat-4.1-doc

What about 5.5, 6.0, 7.0?

If people use svn 1.7 clients then I think it would be easier to
commit them under their final names "tomcat-5.5-doc",
"tomcat-6.0-doc", "tomcat-7.0-doc", instead of the current symlink
schema of "5.5 -> 5.5.35".

With svn 1.7 there are no ".svn" subdirectories inside the tree, so
is is possible to rm the files from hard drive and replace them with
new ones in place before committing. (Some care will be needed for "!
missing" and "? new" ones).

Regarding imported 3.2 docs:
Some of them have unusual filenames (*.howto, faq) and thus did not
have svn:eol-style applied. I'll look at it ~tomorrow when Mark
finishes the import.

This is the start of the process to move the Tomcat web site to
svnpubsub as mandated by the ASF infra team.

Note that we could also move the site partially or fully to the CMS but
that is a bigger step and probably one we want to consider alongside the
discussions we have had around updating the overall style of the docs
and site.

The first few steps will be to add files for the docs for the latest
versions of those components that are no longer supported.

After that, I'll be checking in an updated build script that will allow
us to update the 5.5, 6.0 & 7.0 with minimal effort after a release.

Then all add support for updating the native and jk docs.

Finally, taglibs and the Maven plug-in will need to ensure that their
sites are svnpubsub compatible.

The short version is that once the entire site is in svn, we can switch
to svnpubsub.

The big advantage this will give us is the ability to make changes to
the site that appear on the live site in seconds rather than an hour or so.

+
+Starting Tomcat with a SecurityManager
+
+
+What happens when the SecurityManager detects a Security
+violation?
+
+
+Trouble shooting tomcat.policy configuration and Security
+Violations
+
+
+
+Why use a SecurityManager?
+The Java SecurityManager is what allows a web browser to run an applet
+in its own sandbox to prevent untrusted code from accessing files on the
+local system, connecting to a host other than the one the applet was loaded
+from, etc.
+In the same way the SecurityManager protects you from an untrusted applet
+running in your browser, use of a SecurityManager while running Tomcat
+can protect your server from trojan servlets, JSP's, JSP beans, and tag
+libraries.  Or even inadvertent mistakes.
+Imagine if someone who is authorized to publish JSP's on your site
inadvertently
+included the following in their JSP:
+
+<% System.exit(1); %>
+
+
+Every time that JSP was executed by Tomcat, Tomcat would exit.
+Using the Java SecurityManager is just one more line of defense a system
+administrator can use to keep the server secure and reliable.
+
+System Requirements
+Use of the SecurityManager requires a JVM that supports JDK 1.2.
+
+
+Precautions
+Implementation of a SecurityManager in Tomcat has not been fully tested
+to ensure the security of Tomcat.  No special Permissions have been
+created to prevent access to internal Tomcat classes by JSP's, web
applications,
+servlets, beans, or tag libraries. Make sure that you are satisfied with
+your SecurityManager configuration before allowing untrusted users to publish
+web applications, JSP's, servlets, beans, or tag libraries.
+Still, running with a SecurityManager is definitely better than running
+without one.
+
+
+Types of Permissions
+Permission classes are used to define what Permissions a class loaded by
+Tomcat will have.  There are a number of Permission classes as part
+of the JDK and you can even create your own Permission class for use in
+your own web applications.
+This is just a short summary of the System SecurityManager Permission
+classes applicable to Tomcat.  Please refer to the JDK documentation
+for more information on using the below Permissions.
+java.util.PropertyPermission
+    Controls read/write access to JVM properties such
+as java.home.
+java.lang.RuntimePermission
+    Controls use of some System/Runtime functions like
+exit() and exec().
+java.io.FilePermission
+    Controls read/write/execute access to files and
+directories.
+java.net.SocketPermission
+    Controls use of network sockets.
+java.net.NetPermission
+    Controls use of multicast network connections.
+java.lang.reflect.ReflectPermission
+    Controls use of reflection to do class introspection.
+java.security.SecurityPermission
+    Controls access to Security methods.
+java.security.AllPermission
+    Allows access to all permissions, just as if you
+were running Tomcat without a SecurityManager.
+
+
+Configuring Tomcat for use with a SecurityManager
+tomcat.policy
+The security policies implemented by the Java SecurityManager are configured
+in the tomcat.policy file located in the tomcat conf
directory.
+The tomcat.policy file replaces any system java.policy file.  The
+tomcat.policy file can be edited by hand or you can use the policytool
+application
+that comes with Java 1.2, or later.
+Entries in the tomcat.policy file use the standard java.policy file
+format as follows:
+// Example policy file entry
+
+grant [signedBy  [,codeBase ] {
+    permission  [ [, ]];
+};
+
+The signedBy and codeBase entries are optional when granting
permissions.
+Comment lines begin with // and end at a new line.
+The codeBase is in the form of a URL and for a file URL can use the
+${java.home} and ${tomcat.home} properties which are expanded out to the
+directory paths defined for them.
+Default tomcat.policy file
+// Permissions for tomcat.
+
+// javac needs this
+grant codeBase "file:${java.home}/lib/-" {
+  permission java.security.AllPermission;
+};
+
+// Tomcat gets all permissions
+grant codeBase "file:${tomcat.home}/lib/-" {
+  permission java.security.AllPermission;
+};
+
+grant codeBase "file:${tomcat.home}/classes/-" {
+  permission java.security.AllPermission;
+};
+
+// Example webapp policy
+// By default we grant read access on webapp dir

+ Localization in Tomcat
+
+ This document attempts to provide information necessary for
+ development of localized content that is served under Tomcat.
+ The audience of this document is developers of Tomcat applications,
+ internationalization and localization experts that need to
+ perform conversions of content to specific locales.
+ The document is divided into several sections.
+
+ How to organize Localized Resources in Tomcat
+
+ This section will describe the schemes that are available under
+ Tomcat to provide access to localized versions of resources,
+ including but not limited to HTML pages, javascript files,
+ image files, etc.
+
+ Tomcat provides three mechanisms that enable it to serve
+ localized versions of content:
+
+
+
+no lookup for localized resource
+file based organization for lookup of localized resource
+docbase based organization for lookup for localized resource
+
+ File based organization for localized resource lookup
+
+ This type of organization of localized content attempts to find the
+ localized version of the resource queried based on the basename of
+ the resource, using the lookup conventions specified in
+ java.lang.ResourceBundle.
+
+For example, assume the following scenario:
+
+
+
+User's Locale: fr_CA
+Webserver's Locale:es_AR
+docbase: /myapp
+User's URL query: /myapp/index.html
+
+
+This scheme will try to look up for the resource in the following
+ priority order:
+
+
+
+ /myapp/index_fr_CA.html
+ /myapp/index_fr.html
+ /myapp/index_es_AR.html
+ /myapp/index_es.html
+ /myapp/index.html
+
+
+ When using this scheme, all localized versions will end up
+ residing on the same directory where the default (the one without
+ the localized name) file is located.
+ Developer's note: there is no need to change the URLs on each one
+ of the localized versions of the files provided.
+
+
+ Docbase based organization for localized resource lookup
+
+ This type of organization of the localized resources attempts to
+ find the localized version of the resource queried based on the
+ existence of a localized document hierarchy under the 'docbase'
+ directory.
+ The organization of the documents is similar to the one that JavaHelp
+ uses.
+
+For example, assume the following scenario:
+
+
+
+User's Locale: fr_CA
+Webserver's Locale:es_AR
+docbase: /myapp
+User's URL query: /myapp/index.html
+
+
+ This scheme will try to look up for the resource in the following
+ priority order:
+
+
+
+/myapp/fr_CA/index.html
+/myapp/fr/index.html
+/myapp/es_AR/index.html
+/myapp/es/index.html
+/myapp/index.html
+
+
+ When using this scheme, all localized versions will end up
+ residing on different directories. All the files for a specific
+ locale will appear in subdirectories under a common
+ parent [docbase]/[locale] directory.
+ Developer's note: on the localized version(s) of the file, there may
be
+ a need to change the URLs. This, especially when there
+ are relative references in those URLs (for example,
+ accessing documents in a directory above).
+
+
+ Implementation Topics
+
+ The org.apache.tomcat.request.StaticInterceptor class
+ is used to handle the lookup for localized resources.
+
+ This is accomplished by specifying on the corresponding entry on
+ server.xml. The StaticInterceptor class includes
+ a property called localization that can
+ be set to any of the values below:
+
+
+
+"file"
+"docbase"
+

LOL. Are you waiting for a release to carry the bad news :)

Don't shoot the messenger. Wasn't able to test earlier, but at least
wanted to let you know before the announcement.

Anyhow, don't care much 'bout 1.3

I don't care enough to let this problem stop the release. I don't expect
much remaining use, i.e. old web server but most recent mod_jk isn't
very likely.

We should probably drop further support for something
abandoned long time ago.

Not really abandoned, at least not by me ;)

I went through the change logs of the last three years and only very few
changes were missing, of which only one was critical, namely the one
cited above.

But I'm fine with announcing that we stop maintaining mod_jk for HTTPD
1.3 after 1.2.35. The only problem is that then the last release can't
be build. Should we provide a "patches_to_apply_..." directory like
httpd does it for important patches?

Have a nice week anyways!

Rainer

For Tomcat7 I'm proposing to only add hooks: 'beforeHandshake' callback in
Handler, and an optional NpnHandler class plus setters in protocol.
There is no Java7 or spdy dependency at all.

If you want to use spdy with Tomcat7 ( assuming the patch is accepted ) you
need to get tomcat-spdy.jar (from tomcat8 or separate download), and either
use Java7 + npn-boot.jar or get tomcat-jni.jar and the matching
libtcnative.so for APR, with Java6.

I'm adding it to trunk as well - I'm using github as a staging area and to
get feedback on the proper layout.

The main question is if it's ok to add a build-time dependency on npn-boot,
which is needed to compile the nio/jio support, 2 classes are affected for
nio:

https://github.com/costinm/tomcat/blob/trunk/java/org/apache/coyote/spdy/SpdyNioNpnHandler.java

https://github.com/costinm/tomcat/blob/trunk/java/org/apache/coyote/spdy/NetSupportTomcatNio.java

Since users will still have to download npn-boot.jar ( it contains GPL so
probably can't be distributed with tomcat ) - they could also download a
jar with those 2 classes and the 2 for jio. That's the second option, if
compile-time dep to gpl is not ok.

The 3rd option is to have the entire spdy package outside tomcat - but keep
the hooks ( i.e. 'beforeHandshake', NpnHandler, etc ) - like I'm proposing
for tomcat7.

Re: SPDY support

Tomcat 7 is a Servlet 3.0 implementation with requirements to support Java 6,
wouldn't this break that contract if we do it for NIO/BIO?
Could this be done as a extras package for the Java connectors?
Why not add this into trunk first, and work with it there, as opposed to an
external repository?
