This one needed some pandoc packages rebuilt. I have done all of that,
and the python-deap build basically works now (and I enabled the test
suite for it too), but my Rawhide build failed because of a critical
bug in in matplotlib on ppc64 causing the -doc subpackage to not be
identical on all arches, which koji treats as a build fail:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1411070
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=827137

Fixing the matplotlib bug on ppc64 is a bit beyond me, help from ppc64
experts would be welcome.

In fact, https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_an_RPM_package
may be even more appropriate (and is more widely known).

The guidelines aren't really a 'how-to' document, so I don't think this
is appropriate there. The guidelines are really just the rules that
packages are required to follow.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Package_maintenance_guide may be a more
appropriate place, and doesn't require special permissions to edit.

Text editors and IDEs for editing RPM spec files: worthy addition to the Packaging:Guidelines article?

2017-01-07 Thread Brenton Horne
Hi,

I'm sending this email in response to a pagure request
 I filed that was replied
with, essentially, them telling me to use this devel mailing list. I think
it would benefit users interested in packaging if there was a paragraph or
two mentioning which text editors and IDEs have support for editing RPM
spec files. I would be willing to write it myself, but I am not a member of
the packaging group and hence do not have permissions to do this.

Thanks for your time,
Brenton

Random proprietary binaries do not, by definition, simply work. Proprietary
binaries work *if* the proprietor has *tested* them on the specific distro
and architecture. This isn't a game of chance, this is a software
engineering effort, hopefully with a payoff of some kind for the proprietor
and the platform vendor.

Splitting a single well-integrated distribution (where all the pieces are
known to work well together) into a bunch of loosely-coupled black-box
modules that have no idea what libraries the other modules even contain
actually DECREASES interoperability.

With "binaries", in this context, I meant both executables and libraries.

The clean approach there is to maintain 2 completely different specfiles, a
$triplet-libfoo noarch package to install on the development machine, and a
"native" libfoo package for $triplet (which may be natively compiled or
cross-compiled) to install on the actual target machine. Converting one to
the other from already-built packages is necessarily an ugly hack, I agree
with you there. You really want to build the source twice from separate
SRPMs.

We are not talking about running binaries, but rather linking with libraries.

I've used and built such toolchains for years (thanks crosstools-ng).
They are fine if all you use them for is building "leaf" applications.

But when your project is composed of many developed libraries -- this is hell:
 * Let's say you use your toolchain to build some libfoo shared object:
   - On the target device, it may be located under /usr/lib
   - But this is useless for further development, because in order to
link your applications with libfoo, it should be installed under
your $sysroot, where your toolchain will search for it
 (e.g: /usr/$triplet/usr/lib)
 * The common hack was to build these packages for the target
device (libraries located under /usr/lib) and than use some
"conversion" scripts that create a new package (with only libraries,
headers, pkg-config, etc.) that install them on the development
   host under $sysroot.

With multiarch, libfoo will be always under /usr/lib/$triplet:
 * On the target device, the dynamic linker will search there before
falling back to /usr/lib (for legacy libraries).
 * And the Debian cross-compiler will search the same paths, so you
can install it on your development host (non-colliding directories).

Correct. That's why I said multiarch is far greater effort than just directory
relocation and it took Debian years to reach this level.

In fact, if you'll read through the Debian documentation, you'll see how
many facets of the distribution it touches, from compilers and build tools,
through packaging tools and package installation tools (dpkg + apt, dependency
calculation etc.)

True. One of the changes Debian introduced to "dpkg" was the concept
of secondary architectures. You can install multiarch libraries side
by side, but when you install non-multiarch package (e.g: executables)
it'll know to pick the primary architecture.

> For Debian multiarch to work, we would also have to introduce Debian's
> aggressive subpackaging of libraries, which is IMHO not an improvement.

It's true that multiarch package should contain only libraries and
not (arch-full) executables.

It's not an improvement for end-user system, but...
 * For embedded -- regretfully, I can't even consider Fedora for embedded
system development.
 * Maybe also lowering total footprint (by finer granularity) which may be boon
for
container people (but I haven't checked, so maybe it's not significant).

Overall, going multiarch is major multi-year effort, so I agree Fedora should
not jump in this direction unless it wants to cater for embedded/IoT developers.

If it does, I strongly suggest learning how Debian did that, both to minimize
further fragmentation as well as learning from experience of others.

Thanks,

Update Information:

This update provides version 0.8.14 of httpretty. This is a significant update
over the previous 0.8.3, but so far as I am aware, there are no backward-
incompatible changes (please comment if you find any). The package now has its
test suite enabled (aside from a few tests that require remote trips), and all
tests pass for all releases, so we have some confidence this in fact works
correctly now. Python 3 compatibility is also greatly improved. 0.8.3 was
entirely broken with more recent urllib3, requests, and openssl versions, and
had many compatibility issues with Python 3.

Partly because there exist more than 2 architectures (think:
RV64G/RV64GC/RV128G, ARMv5/6/7/8, or less esoterically, having various
CPU features like SSE or AVX compiled in and out). Partly because
there will be fewer differences between Fedora & Debian/Ubuntu which
means less friction and more chance of a random proprietary binary
simply working.

A 10 year horizon is also the timeframe proposed for introducing
RISC-V 128 bit hardware (128 bit emulation is already available,
although unless you enjoy writing machine code by hand it's not much
use right now), so we'll have potentially 3 different arches to

No, the ./configure script DOES accept $PYTHON if it is set in the
environment. The problem happens in the expansion of the %configure
macro. I am mainly pointing out this trap since I don't see a simple
fix.

+The Mmap module lets you use mmap to map in a file as a perl variable rather
+than reading the file into dynamically allocated memory. Multiple programs may
+map the same file into memory, and immediately see changes by each other.
+Memory may be allocated not attached to a file, and shared with subprocesses.

[EPEL-devel] EPEL-ANNOUNCE Major Mono update for EL6

2017-01-07 Thread Timotheus Pokorra

Hello,
following up on my email concerning Mono in Epel6:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/epel-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/QZLKV6KRKNWW4QVMNLL4TY2GYDGYZBWL/

I did not get any response.
But given the little amount of work necessary, I thought I might still
push Mono 4.2 to Epel6, eventually.
Now I heard the Beta for RHEL 6.9 has started:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/rhelv5-announce/2017-January/msg0.html

So I initiated the push of the Mono 4.2 packages and the only package
depending on it (dbus-sharp) to
epel-testing on EL6:
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2017-8c6c7bf06e

These updates will sit in epel-testing for a significant period of time
to allow adequate notice and time for testing. I hope to push them to
stable at around the time when RHEL 6.9 is released.

Please do test thoroughly, give positive/negative karma, and open bug
reports.

Thank you,
  Timotheus
