After half a decade of using dnf? It's aready ingrained in my muscle
memory and some of my ansible scripts. Flipping the name of most
important command every few years is really counter-productive, yum→dnf
transition was painful enough. I'm against inflicting such self-harm
again.

Re: Semi-orphaning pysvn

2018-06-28 Thread Jonathan Wakely

On 28/06/18 14:09 -0600, Jerry James wrote:

On Thu, Jun 28, 2018 at 1:25 PM Stephen Gallagher wrote:

I've been keeping the lights on in this package for years since the maintainer
(ravenoak) vanished from Fedora. However, it doesn't build against Python 3.7
(works fine with 3.6) and I don't have the cycles to dig into it.

If someone steps up to fix the FTBFS, I'm willing to hang on as a comaintainer,
but if no one does, I'm going to orphan it completely in about a week.

The bug is not in pysvn. It is in python-pycxx. From the build log:

/usr/src/CXX/IndirectPythonInterface.cxx: In function 'char*
Py::__Py_PackageContext()':
/usr/src/CXX/IndirectPythonInterface.cxx:471:50: error: invalid
conversion from 'const char*' to 'char*' [-fpermissive]
char *__Py_PackageContext() { return _Py_PackageContext; }
 ^~
make: *** [Makefile:170: IndirectPythonInterface.o] Error 1

That declaration should be:

const char *__Py_PackageContext() { return _Py_PackageContext; }

I think Boost.Python needed a similar change to build with Python 3.7

Either patch python-pycxx to add the missing "const" or build pysvn
with -fpermissive.

Please fix the code, don't use -fpermissive (it turns off loads of
rules in the C++ compiler, so is a sledgehammer to crack a nut).

This problem is not about new gcc flags ? or about python rebuild ? now
that I'm reading if I just add const to the code [1] will fix this
build error ?
original code here [2]

No it isn't. A Change page is not documentation. It's essentially a
transient thing that documents the Change itself for the purpose of the
Change process.

If this is a permanent step in a permanent packager process it should
be documented in the actual documentation of that packager process.

What is the criterion to merge the side tag?

The critpath installs fine (except stuff that cannot be installed due to
yum-deprecated vs yum collisions and gnome-software that has some broken
dependency on PackageKit).

Stuff that doesn't build and sounds important:

  - ceph (also FTBFS in regular rawhide)
  - libreoffice (also FTBFS in regular rawhide)
  - orca (blocked by pyatspi, looking at it ATM)
  - kernel-tools

I think it's fine to merge this with some broken dependencies remaining.
I would concentrate on getting those builds fixed that are in the
default install (Server, Workstation), with the goal being to keep
nightly composes working.

After that, I'd merge it immediately and continue the rebuilds in
rawhide proper.

Side tags that have a lot of packages start quickly diverging from
rawhide when people do regular rawhide updates and I think it's least
painful to aggressively merge this back to rawhide once it's good enough
(doesn't break default install composes).

You can request new branches just after requesting your repo:

fedpkg --module-name ydiff request-branch f28
fedpkg --module-name ydiff request-branch f27

fedpkg --module-name slop request-branch f28
fedpkg --module-name slop request-branch f27

(You can omit --module-name if you running the command from within the already
created GIT repo).

Then wait for Gwyn to do her magic.

Afterwards you can:

 1. git pull to get the new branches
 2. fedpkg switch-branch f28
 3. git merge master
 4. fedpkg push
 5. fedpkg build
 6. fedpkg update

Maybe run the following? Not sure. Hard to find docs on this.
fedpkg request-branch f28

That's my suggestion, although "no longer reference dnf" is a bit
strong. We'd use `yum` as the standard command in documentation about
package management, but detailed documentation would talk about "yum
powered by dnf".

new package built, now what?

2018-06-28 Thread Alois Mahdal
Hi,

so I'm following "Join the package collection maintainers", I'm at the
late phase when I've submitted new package, ran `fedpkg build` from
master, koji is happy, etc.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Join_the_package_collection_maintainers?rd=PackageMaintainers/Join#Import.2C_commit.2C_and_build_your_package

Now I tried to just follow with "Update Your Branches (if desired)", but
that fails, because F27 and F28 branches don't exist -- OTOH I don't
expect them to spawn from nowhere; both versions are already released,
so I wonder if it's even possible to add new ones.

So what should I do? Just forget about F27/F28 and wait for F29? Do
[something] to have the F27/28 branches created?

And should the guide be updated? (It seems that this will happen to
every new package)

Thanks,
aL.

PS: I don't want to sound impatient; I'm OK if the answer is "wait" or
"jump through these hoops", I'm asking because I want to notify upstream
yet I kinda don't know what can I tell them. :D

As I understand it, regardless of which one we decide to document and
market as primary, the plan is for the package to include that symlink
and for both commands to just work identically.

When FESCo decided to approve that change to the original plan, this

It'll make it easier to share and collaborate on documentation and

PyUnicode_AsUTF8 return type was char* in 3.6:
https://docs.python.org/3.6/c-api/unicode.html#c.PyUnicode_AsUTF8

but became const char* in 3.7:
https://docs.python.org/3.7/c-api/unicode.html#c.PyUnicode_AsUTF8

Thus you should probably patch https://github.com/mkeeter/antimony/blob/
master/lib/graph/src/util.cpp#L50 by transforming "char* c" into
"const char* c"

The code has 2 problems. One is simply a missing "const" keyword,
easy to fix. The other problem is that the Qt authors apparently
thought it was a good idea to make a common word, "slots", be a macro.
Since there is a structure element in the python headers with the name
slots, bad things happen. Try the attached patch. It is slightly
horrible, but should fix the build. And please slap any developer
near you who tries to #define a short word like that.

(I recently had to help a bunch of upstreams cope with the #define
iszero that the latest revision of the C standard required to be added
to math.h. Guess what? People had already used "iszero" as a
function or method name, many times, and not synonymously with the
meaning of the C standard macro, either.)

The bug is not in pysvn. It is in python-pycxx. From the build log:

/usr/src/CXX/IndirectPythonInterface.cxx: In function 'char*
Py::__Py_PackageContext()':
/usr/src/CXX/IndirectPythonInterface.cxx:471:50: error: invalid
conversion from 'const char*' to 'char*' [-fpermissive]
 char *__Py_PackageContext() { return _Py_PackageContext; }
  ^~
make: *** [Makefile:170: IndirectPythonInterface.o] Error 1

That declaration should be:

const char *__Py_PackageContext() { return _Py_PackageContext; }

Either patch python-pycxx to add the missing "const" or build pysvn
with -fpermissive.

Incidentally, the two sed expressions in %build are wrong. They don't
match anything, and therefore don't change anything. Change them both
to this:

%{__sed} -i -e 's@-fexceptions -frtti@%{optflags} -frtti@' Makefile

or, if you want to go the -fpermissive route, to this:

%{__sed} -i -e 's@-fexceptions -frtti@%{optflags} -frtti -fpermissive@' Makefile

To tie two recent devel list threads, this is a perfect use case for a

that don't want to rewrite scripts.

For the record, I was against introducing dnf as a separate command---I

major version was due at that time). Having said that, once the decision
has been made, I just got on with it, even though I use a mix of Fedora

The cool thing about sailing ships on a globe is that it's a sphere
and you can keep going and still wind up back where you started :)

To answer the ecosystem question... if I were an EL shop that had been

Yep. Sometimes we don't consider all angles or get feedback that
negates decisions. That's what's awesome about open source. It
allows you to experiment, correct, and adapt, all in the public space.

Semi-orphaning pysvn

I've been keeping the lights on in this package for years since the
maintainer (ravenoak) vanished from Fedora. However, it doesn't build

If someone steps up to fix the FTBFS, I'm willing to hang on as a

Aren't we talking about YUM being a symlink to DNF? If that is the case, I
don't believe
staying "aligned" is going to be easier - since it is indeed DNF and not
YUM. I was under the impression
this was a rebranding; and that ship has sailed years ago. Which also begs
the question, why isn't
the rest of the RH distro ecosystem using DNF?

When FESCo decided to approve that change to the original plan, this

I think this is a great plan. Thank you for explaining it here.

I also like Matt's idea of re-titling the change "Replace Yum 3 with
Yum 4, powered by DNF"? I think it would help bring publicity to
what's going on with Yum in Fedora.

I think ultimately that's up to you, but certainly the idea is to
balance disruption (breaking builds or rawhide usability) against
holding back progress (the approved python 3.7 feature).

It would certainly be nice to have less disruption than 170 FTBFS
packages and 120 broken dependencies, but then if some of those packages
are broken already then they shouldn't count against the total unless
somehow they're "more broken" after the tag is merged.

I think setting a deadline for the merge (which would have to be pretty
soon if the mass rebuild is still on July 11) and sending regular broken
package lists and calls for help for help would be the only thing you
can really do besides just hitting the button and merging it.

Re: Packages with scriptlets which call ldconfig

2018-06-28 Thread Jason L Tibbitts III
After modifying the script to strip comments and running it against the
most recent version of rawhide on my local mirror, I found that abrt,
pcsc-cyberjack and slic3r dropped off the list. But I found that libdnf
actually appeared on the list when it wasn't before.. I checked the
package and that's correct; in commit
a5902b6c02cfe6f5f1338da3744f4c25e029fcde the %ldconfig_scriptlets macro
was removed and replaced with the old incorrect direct ldconfig calls.

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/libdnf/c/a5902b6c02cfe6f5f1338da3744f4c25e029fcde?branch=master

Supposedly this is on purpose, to keep specfile compatibility with
RHEL7, but then the correct way to do that is to conditionalize the
scriptlets by wrapping them in

%if (0%{?rhel} && 0%{?rhel} <= 7)
...
%endif

The macros do of course work in EPEL but I guess EPEL compatibility
isn't the issue.

That's fine. I could exclude those but I don't know which they are and
the benefit would be pretty low.

TH> I guess I'm not the only one who updated the Spec without a rebuild,
TH> so I'm not sure checking the source packages is the best approach.

Well, it shows the current state of rawhide. (And I'm checking the
binary packages, not the srpms.) Rebuilds in rawhide do not have a
particularly high cost so it doesn't really hurt to do them, but
certainly the mass rebuild in a couple of weeks will take care of them.
I'll rerun the script then. Certainly if you know you don't have any
issues (which you can't really be sure of if you didn't actually build
and test) then you can ignore the report.

TH> Is it possible to directly check the Spec?

It is, but it's not as reliable or easy and wouldn't actually reflect
what's in rawhide currently. Some specs can't be parsed without having
the full git checkout, and you have to be careful when parsing specs
because they execute arbitrary code. You can do it by eye pretty
easily, but there are just too many packages right now for me to do
that.

Agreed. Is the only reason to maintain the x87 backend for non-SSE2 support?

So the QtWebEngine no-sse2 patch is definitely going to be dropped from

For kernel-tools, it depends on your definition of "important".
This is mostly a collection of miscellaneous userspace tools
that happen to live in the kernel source tree. The part that
isn't building is perf which is notoriously finicky and
probably needs to be debugged in conjunction with the
upstream maintainer.

I believe that this option fails to actually re-enable USB until
complete reboot of a machine affected. Neither keyboard, nor mouse, nothing, no
USBs work after switching from power (dock) to battery, even after
re-connecting power.

The issue is observed since upgrading to F28 (non-gnome)

Is there anything I can look at to find out what is causing it, if it
is really due to the above mentioned power saving tweaks?

F28 only enables auto-suspend on BlueTooth USB interfaces, all other USB
devices are
left alone, so this seems unrelated.

Not exactly since it's happening only since the update and I don't know what
else it could be...
Further I do use a bluetooth keyboard that I am unable to connect anymore (so i
use it through synergy from windows machine...)

In your original mail you say "no USBs work", that sounds like you've tested
other USB
devices and they all don't work.

Anyways you can try passing "btusb.enable_autosuspend=0" on the kernel
commandline,
that disables the USB BT autosuspend which we now do by default in F28.

Hans

 - ~120 blocked by dependencies that FTBFS

Ideally, this would all get fixed before the merge, but that's
unrealistic, there are packages that are FTBFS for unrelated reasons, etc.

What is the criterion to merge the side tag?

The critpath installs fine (except stuff that cannot be installed due to
yum-deprecated vs yum collisions and gnome-software that has some broken
dependency on PackageKit).

Stuff that doesn't build and sounds important:

 - ceph (also FTBFS in regular rawhide)
 - libreoffice (also FTBFS in regular rawhide)
 - orca (blocked by pyatspi, looking at it ATM)
 - kernel-tools

We're fixing some obvious differences that weren't introduced for any good
reason.

There will be no special compat layer just a yum -> dnf symlink.
If the compatibility is preserved to sufficient level, we believe it's a
better
option than to have 2 executables with different behavior.

The long-term priority is to make DNF command-line interface and behavior
consistent
and in such cases, DNF must diverge from YUM3 behavior and insisting on 100%
compatibility would block usability improvements and evolution in general.

Re: change in -fpic handling?

2018-06-28 Thread Nick Clifton
Hi Dave, Hi Florian,

Right - there is a new annobin rpm available - annobin-8.0-1.el8 - which
  has these changes:

* Weak symbols are not generated by the annobin plugin
  when compiling with -ffunction-sections.

There was no point really. Linker garbage collection will not
discard sections if they have annobin notes against them, since
the code section and the note section are not in a section group.

Really this is a gcc problem. If it created a section group for
sections created by the -ffunction-sections option, then annobin
could add the notes into this group and linker garbage collection
  would discard the lot.

Note - annobin does still generate weak symbols for linkonce
sections, since these can and will be discarded by the linker.
The symbols still get into the dynamic symbol table, but they
are hidden. Not sure if this makes much difference however.

* The annobin plugin will now only reference symbols that it
creates, and all of these symbols now have a ".annobin_" prefix
in order to avoid potential collisions with symbols defined
  elsewhere in the executable.

I hope that these changes address the immediate issue of libxsmm not
  compiling.

Longer term I need to work with the gcc maintainers to get section
  groups generated for function sections.

Cheers
  Nick

Right. Still not possible. I thought that with the config option bootstrap_* we

This is definitely possible. Just add
  config_opts['package_manager'] = 'dnf'
And it will work. Kind of. If you are ok with using different depsolver.

E.g., if you have in spec
  BuildRequires: webserver
And yum always picked httpd, dnf can pick nginx. Or vice versa. The code is
different.

Yes, that's my thinking too — we know that the simplified version
results in identical packages. If you think some more checks should be
added, that's OK, I'd be happy to do that, but a) please be more
precise in what exactly those checks should be, b) they would apply to
the old setup too in the same way, so this shouldn't block the change.

In the recent past, we've had situations where the artificial split itself
resulted in errors because the person merging from upstream to downstream
didn't know that certain packages had to be updated outside the tarball due
to RPM limitations. Having a single repository would have avoided this.

When you say "the reluctance to simplify the process is due to the number of
times simple patches were submitted that broke things in unintended
ways", it sounds like you're saying "we implemented the separation so we
could prevent this from happening, but in reality it didn't help at all
because the changes still got merged and built downstream". (And yes, I'm
aware that I was responsible for a non-trivial number of those).

I think that eliminating the redundancy here is an improvement on its own.
I don't believe that adding new testing needs to be a pre-requisite for
this. It can (and should) be done, but we shouldn't block a positive change
waiting for a "perfect" one.

Not strictly a script error: I already updated most of my packages
without rebuilding them, so they are all false positives. I guess I'm
not the only one who updated the Spec without a rebuild, so I'm not sure
checking the source packages is the best approach. Is it possible to
directly check the Spec?
