This code can be added in Sugar?

 I have reviewed simpleactivity.py and testactivity.py

This code is very legible and explains well what it does, and can
serve as an example for new activity authors.

The docstrings in simpleactivity.py are an effective explanation of
the simplified API, so perhaps you can generate the documentation from
them in the usual Python fashion.

Next to do is for a few activities to be developed using
SimpleActivity, so that you can see what remains common to the new
activities. The common code might then be added to SimpleActivity.

testactivity.py is derived from SharedActivity, and so it is complex,
because a collaborating activity is complex. I'd like to see also an
 activity example derived from SimpleActivity.

The number of imports done by testactivity.py still seems high, and a
SimpleActivity example may be able to reduce that.

RE: Auckland Testing Summary 6 July 2013

Labyrinth and Maze are both called Kōwhīwhiwhi - suggests an inappropriate
translation of Labyrinth (guess it should be translated to a word more
appropriate for brainstorm/mindmap activity).
In spanish we have the same problem, and the Labyrinth name waschanged to Mind
maps.Would be good rename the activity in the activity.info to Mind maps and
avoidthis problems.

Auckland Testing Summary 6 July 2013
Who: John, Tabitha, Tom

Testing XO-system 1a For XO-4 (build 46)
Sugar 0.98.7
Firmware Q7B35

Found that my previously described customization script was not working
right -- the /etc/sysconfig/keyboard change is overwritten during first
boot! Updated the customization script to also hack olpc-configure. Will
look at options to do this better later.

Found that this build does not include the Maori translations for sugar
itself. Worked with CJL to get the language pack into the customization
script. We're not sure how we missed this as we have done a moderate
amount of testing with Maori in previous builds, perhaps we saw the
activities translated to Maori (activities are built differently) and
just didn't notice that sugar itself had no Maori.

The language selector is awful. It's slow to appear, the drop downs
don't work the first time you use them and they scroll very slowly
compared to the number of entries but too fast to easily spot your
desired language. Sometimes when changing the language, when you click
the restart now, nothing happens. If you click restart later and then
restart the whole laptop the changes seem to take affect.

Some activities that we were expecting to be there, were not (maybe we
are getting confused between builds prepared for different deployments).
There is no GetBooks but there is Read (without any books!). There is
also no Infoslice. There is no SocialCalc. There is no eToys.

In Browse we went to activities.sugarlabs.org and tried to use the touch
screen to write in the search but that didn't work, you had to use the
touchpad button to activate the search box. You also couldn't just touch
the button that starts the search, you had to use the touchpad button
(or enter key). You could however use the touchscreen to select the
activity to go to the activity page and touch to select download.
Activities did however download successfully, install and run (like the
Music keyboard activity btw).
There used to be a menu on the left side of the homepage in Browse but
it has gone on all the XO-4 homepages. You used to use that menu to
access maps, images and sound files, as well as any published Infoslice
activity.

Maze works.
Paint works well with touchscreen.
Physics works well with touchscreen.
Implode works well with touchscreen.
Portfolio works.
Measure works well with touchscreen.
Labyrinth works.

Write works and the Maori Macrons (now, after some changes) work. The
insertion of a table changes the font to times new roman which is not
actually a listed font available in Write.

We're not sure if there is a camera in the XO-4 SKU 303 serial
SHC318001EC we just got from Australia, there is something there but it
is at best mis-aligned. This laptop did get banged against a wall on
it's handle while it was closed. The direction of the impact was mostly
parallel with the plane of the shut laptop and wasn't too severe. Could
this move the camera in the body of the laptop and also break it?
Firmware camera test fails, record behaves reasonably (it only offers to
record sound). Barry reports the second XO from the pair in this
shipment has a working camera. The XO-4 we got from Boston does
recognise it's camera on and it can take high and low quality video
well. Will take photographs and wait for advice before opening.

Moon still fails to start when the XO language is Maori. Previously
reported in https://sugardextrose.org/issues/3971
Clock - loving the new grab hands feature, still doesn't talk when XO is
in Maori. Maori issue also reported in the same 3971 ticket.

Labyrinth and Maze are both called Kōwhīwhiwhi - suggests an
inappropriate translation of Labyrinth (guess it should be translated to
a word more appropriate for brainstorm/mindmap activity).

On some laptops terminal is called Terminal and on others it is called
Kāpeka.

WikipediaEN has not had an activity name translation either but this
might be deliberate.

Turtleblocks activity has a partial translation inside the activity due
to new blocks being added. The name of the Turtleblocks activity has not
been translated (but again that might be deliberate).

Hey,

I've just updated an XO 1.75 to 13.1.0 build 35. But I've noticed that
it blanks the screen after 12 seconds of inactivity. Then approximately
30 seconds later it flashes the screen on and blanks it again a couple
of times then goes into suspend.

Is this known behaviour?

Can we change it? 12 seconds is pretty aggressive and makes it rather
difficult to use.

Cheers!

We're pleased to announce the next release candidate of our new 13.1.0
 software release.

Quick links for those who know which files need to be grabbed and save
 to USB disks:
 http://download.laptop.org/xo-4/os/candidate/13.1.0-30

 http://download.laptop.org/xo-1/os/candidate/13.1.0-30

This is a signed release candidate that can be installed on all XOs,
 even those with security enabled.

We're looking for testing and feedback on all aspects of the system.
Thanks for any help you can offer, and for all the feedback that was
 received throughout development.

Please review the Known problems section of the release notes. Some
documented issues are carried over from previous releases, but others
are new and are things that we will aim to fix in the few weeks before
 release.

XO-4 automatic power management is enabled by default, but this is
still a work in progress. There are still various instabilities which
may make this build feel more unstable than earlier ones. You can
disable automatic power management in sugar's Settings panel to
 restore previous behaviour.

Compared to the previous release candidate, we have changed:

Latest wake-on-WLAN fixes for 8787 wireless. The C1 machines should
 now have somewhat reliable wake-on-WLAN.

The no-mouse-on-boot problem should be finally resolved (#12101).
Please shout if you see further cases of dead touchpad upon boot.

systemd no longer conflicts with powerd's lid handling (#12504)

 olpc-dev-kernel works on XO-1.75 (#12531)

Wikipedia now works when offline (#12479)

 Thanks!

Subject: OwNet
To: devel@lists.laptop.org

Hi everyone,We are a group of students from the Slovak University of
Technology. Last year we took part in an international competition called
Imagine Cup. We created an application, called OwNet, that enables users with
poor Internet connection browse the Web more effectively and even offline by
providing a local proxy that intelligently caches and prefetches Web pages. It
also contains some educational features, as it is intended for schools in
Africa.

OwNet is currently being deployed in Kenya, at schools in Nanyuki and Voi.
Because of the rules of the Imagine Cup competition, our application is
implemented using Microsoft technologies. However, this year we are going to
reimplement it using cross-platform technologies so that it can also be used
under Linux.

Recently we came across the project OLPC. We find it very interesting and, if
possible, we would like to contribute to the project. Could our application be
somehow useful to OLPC? Possibly some parts could be integrated into the Sugar
interface (e.g. intelligent caching, prefetching or educational features).
Since we intend a full reimplementation, we could choose features based on your
preference or suggestions.

We would really appreciate your feedback, questions or ideas.

You can also find more information about the project on our website:

http://ownet.fiit.stuba.sk/?l=uk

Thank you very much.

Cheers,the OwNet team

RE: Xo1.5 crashes

2012-10-07 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn
Hello!
We have one XO 1.5 that have that problem. We used it for our Butiá project.
When plug an arduino board into the usb, the XO rebootsinstantanly. Now, with
our PIC18F.. that it speak directly USB works perfectly!
The question: the problem is the usb conversion of the arduino board? Some
devices speak serial, no usb direclty..

So when i plug one usb device into the xo be it an ipod or a cell phone while
running on battery the screen goes white and the laptop reboots. It works fine
when plugged in charging though. I just wanted to let you all know what im
experiencing. I believe the devices are drawing too much current from the
laptop and forcing a reboot. It doesnt matter which usb port i plug it into.

the control panel not works. If you click some times, the XO
reboots!!-DESIGN: the cross of the GTK text box no are vertical centered (see
attach image gtk_text_box.png)-the home, in the list view, sometimes shows an
strange name of the activities (I think a badredraw.. I attach:
home_list_view.png)-why the summary info no appears in the home list view
yet?-in the journal: why don't have multi-select option? that is a good feature!

Hi,
You know the Butia robot?
http://www.fing.edu.uy/inco/proyectos/butia/
First, we use a Arduino Mega baseboard to build our Butia. Now, we use a more
inexpensive board: USB4Butia:
http://www.fing.edu.uy/inco/proyectos/butia/mediawiki/index.php/Usb4butia

That board (USB4Butia) can be make with low cost and with your hands:
http://www.fing.edu.uy/inco/proyectos/butia/mediawiki/index.php/USB4buti%C3%A0

All the software/hardware is open! The more expensive component in the board is
the micro: PIC 18F4550
We have a TurtleBlocks plugin to control the robot:
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/TurtleArt#Butia
And we add Lego NxT and Lego WeDo plugins in the TurtleBlocks, making afork
called: TurtleBots:
http://activities.sugarlabs.org/es-ES/sugar/addon/4434
You think make a similar plugin for the XOurduino?Maybe, we can help you..

 From: d...@laptop.org

 Hi,

We're pleased to announce the next release candidate of our new 12.1.0
 software release.

Information and installation instructions can be found here:
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Release_notes/12.1.0

Quick links for those who know which files need to be grabbed and save
 to USB disks:
 http://download.laptop.org/xo-1.75/os/candidate/12.1.0-16/
 http://download.laptop.org/xo-1.5/os/candidate/12.1.0-16/
 http://download.laptop.org/xo-1/os/candidate/12.1.0-16/

This is a signed release candidate that can be installed on all XOs,
 even those with security enabled.

We're looking for testing and feedback on all aspects of the system.
Thanks for any help you can offer, and for all the feedback that was
 received throughout development.

Our scheduled release date is July 9th.

Please review the Known problems section of the release notes. Some
documented issues are carried over from previous releases, but others
are new and are things that we will aim to fix in the time remaining
 before release.

Compared to 12.1.0 release candidate 2 (build 15), we have fixed and changed:

The Welcome screen (and activity) has been updated with new content
providing a quick introduction on how to use Sugar and the XO.

Implode has been fixed to show the animated help information again (SL#3463).

Labyrinth can now resize images without hanging (SL#3669).

A sugar-artwork update fixes drawing of the SpinButton widget in Read
and Abacus (SL#3406) and the bookmark edit area in Read (SL#3561).

The totem media player in GNOME was failing to launch; we've reverted
to an older version to fix that.

Ogg media on websites now works again: the totem-based media player
plugin has been fixed to display this media in most cases (#11963),
using WebKit's own media support in the other cases. When the webkit
internal audio support is used, we've fixed the display of the
 playback controls (#11913).

The battery meter now behaves better when plugging/unplugging AC power
 (#11957).

Booting after activation no longer results in misnamed network devices
(#11967) and loss of mesh networking on XO-1 (#11975). After
activating, the black cursor no longer appears on top of the boot
animation or on the desktop (#11940).

A new instability in the XO-1 wireless driver has been fixed (#11941).

XO-1.5 has been fixed for manufacturing tests involving suspend/resume
(#11867, #11964). The manufacturing tests also exposed a bug in how
the wtmp file is updated on shutdown, that's been fixed too (#11952).

 Thanks!

We are looking at an app that goes through the classic ./configure,
make, make install to compile from source. The compile process runs
ok (this is on a XO-1). We are also able to run the binary, but I am
unclear about how we would package this into a .xo activity. Any
 pointers?

I was thinking about how we would package the binaries, given that the
.xo activity isn't supposed to install in /usr/local/bin and other
locations. If we bundle the RPM, the olpc user does not have rights to
 install the binary.

Easy: no install the binaries.. only use them,,You can compile (make), and
after use the binaries into the same folder..

There are a few activities that not runs on 0.94. The oldest activities (for
0.82) havea minimal problems (and need update the style of the toolbars).
The tests on Sugar 0.96 started [2]Sugar 0.96 presents more problems: the old
activities, in some cases uses 'class' and/or'service_name' in activity.info.
but, fix that, are easy. Some of this activities, runs on 0.96, but without a
test, I can't update the sugar versionparameter. If you test a activity, fill
the information in [2]

january, the blue bars, of today.
The second picture, is of the time of the activities since the latest update:
  111 activities have 6 months or less81 activities between 6 months - 1
year251 activities! more than 1 year.. and counting..
The test on Sugar 0.94 are (mostly) finished.. and some activities continues
saying in ASLO I'm run on Sugar 0.82to 0.90 when runs perfectly on 0.94 (and
possibly in 0.96)

Butia 2.0 - Telepresence

2012-04-26 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

Hi,
I wanted to share with you some videos of what we are doingwith Butiá 2.0.In
the videos you see a XO 1.75, using the accelerometer that it brings,we use it
to control the robot. The XO (1.0) which is above therobot receives messages
sent to you by the other (connected by the network maya)and uses the camera to
send it captures the XO 1.75.With this, you can control the robot to several
feet away, somethingthat can be called telepresence.

RE: Multi-laptop naming scheme for build files

 1. single-character ID for product type. 'a' for XO-1, 'b' for XO-1.5,
 'c' for XO-1.75, ...
 2. build number
 3. a .
 4. extension

 e.g.

 'a900.img' - build 900 copy-nand image for XO-1
 'b900.zd4' - build 900 4GB image for XO-1.5
 'c900.zd4' - build 900 4GB image for XO-1.75

 Thoughts/other ideas?

It's a good idea.. simple to remember easy (a, b, c...)
Why use the build number? Not is better use the version of Sugar?
Ex: os883 is Sugar 0.94.1and you need remember that 883 is 0.94...
Only a idea...

Result of test activities on Sugar 0.94.1

2012-01-14 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

Hi,
Some days ago I make a complete list of the activities of the SugarLabs page...
Now, I make a test of the activities that only have compatibility with old
sugar (from 0.82 to 0.88)
There are 81 activities that runs to 0.90 or 0.92 that need to be testeds.
I think that this activities works good... Between 0.90 to 0.94 not are some
changes in Sugar...
Only test public activities. The experimental are 82. And without page: 38.
Most of the activities run correct in 0.94.1 (Ensamble 883 - Firmware: Q2E48).
The major problem is that sugar changes, and the developers can't follow the
train...In some activities, when you use the mouse, and request it, the value
x, y were integers.. now, arefloat.. the same problem in another things of the
screen.. that waiting a integer and have a float..
I have an activity: Conozco Alimentos that have that problem.. When I make
it, not have thisproblem.. In the I know America, I fix it...
Another problem with SugarLabs page: you need make another version to can
select betweenthat Sugar works...
Well.. the list:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AntaXnq4oy2_dHpvZHhLeGRQYzc1cDlRZU9Mc1NldGc
The column enters means if you can enters to the activity: the red means that
have error while load...or directly: not load never..
The column notes have the comments for each activity. When I said: log with
some inecessary informationI try to say that not are errors, but are some
information that not are useful.
I await your comments...

I add one column with the title someone to fix it... And let to all can

In the case of my activity: Conozco Alimentos I can fix easy... I put my name

RE: [Sugar-devel] Sugar versions - Activities

2012-01-06 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

It would be good to record the date fo last release. There could be
translations committed to git but not in the release if it was a long
time ago. This could be checked against the release date and the git
 log activity since.

I add another column to my spreadsheet (1) called 'Last of:' that have the
datewhen was uploaded the last version..
The numbers speak for themselves..
The average of days that the activities had is: 421,2 days!!!
That means that some activities have 1 year of inactivity (inactivity = not new
version)
I attach a graphic with the age of each group of activities:
1 month or less: 23between 1 and 2:26between 2 and 3:29between 3
and 6:47between 6 and 12: 68moore than 1 year: 213

Probably many of them continue working in new Sugar versions,
but didn't have a release in a long time.
Yes..
May be a good work for a group of volunteers, is check the activities marked
working in old versions,
in a xo with 0.94, and report if they work,
and then the compatibility info can be updated in ASLO.

I can test some.. I have an XO with 0.94 (in fact, any version, is reflahsing
with another image..)
If I test some.. Where put the results?

RE: USB permissions for educational robots

2012-01-03 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

roughly speaking, we chose the dialout group because a) it's a
traditional group for access to UNIX serial devices, b) many USB
devices that activities need access to are actually serial devices,
and c) the olpc user is already a member of dialout. is it
important that Lego devices be protected by a separate group
 membership?
No.. was only a idea...
Seeing the Wiki appears this:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Robots/udev_rules

In the article: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/11.2.0/Robotics_plan
Can be add USB4all in the list?
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/11.2.0/Robotics_plan#Dev_and_test_matrix

the current udev rule isn't added by Sugar -- it's in the olpc-utils
rpm distributed by OLPC. we can add a modified rule once we agree
on what it should look like.

USB permissions for educational robots

2012-01-02 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

Hi,
In a few of months, all our High Schools (of Uruguay) will receive and robotic
kit (Lego).
At Universidad de la República, Facultad de Ingeniería we are workingwith
it and the XO...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8HRbDLO7LM

In other parallel road, we are working on a 2.0 version of the Butia Robot
www.fing.edu.uy/inco/proyectos/butia

That uses USB4all IO board which resulted from a thesis given at ourUniversity
(also will have arduino compatibility)
http://www.fing.edu.uy/inco/grupos/mina/pGrado/pgusb/

USB4all is based on 18f4550 pic.The vendor is Microchip,
SYSFS{idVendor}==04d8And have: productID=0x000b //bootloader
productID=0x000c //pic18f4550 generic comunication

The actual Sugar image, only have permissions for LEGO WeDo.
If you see in: /etc/udev/rules.d you find the correspondient:
30-olpc-wedo.rules.
The file add this rule:
SYSFS{idVendor}==0694, SYSFS{idProduct}==0003, GROUP=dialout, MODE=0660
This means: 0694 is LEGO 0003 the model: WeDo
To the NXT we need add: {idProduct}==0002
But, for each model add a new line.. not is a good form..
Exist another way, a generic rule:
BUS==usb, SYSFS{idVendor}==0694, GROUP=lego, MODE=0660
That says: if is USB and fabricated by 0694 (LEGO) lets 0660 (4: read+ 2: write)
If add this permissions to lego group, we need create it..
But, we don't make it, an use an existing group like root? Or another...
Suggestions?
We can make a generic group robot that have permissions for: lego wedo, lego
nxt, butia, etc...

Problems with import

the new version of Pygame (1.9.1)
My idea is:
If Pygame 1.9.1 is installed, use it ..Otherwise, use a Pygame that I have a
folder lib and compiled ...
My code looks something like this:
import sys
try: import pygame import pygame from cameraexcept: del pygame
sys.path.insert (0, 'lib')
import pygameimport pygame from camera

This code does not work, what am I doing wrong?
The second import pygame should import first found in libbut continues to
import that are in the system .. Why ??
If you just do:
sys.path.insert (0, 'lib')
import pygameimport pygame from camera
The code import pygame from the folder lib

I don't understand what you mean, sorry. I shall repeat in more detail.

 1. before reflashing, you must provide battery, with good state of
charge, and external DC power from power supply,

 2. after reflashing, you may need to turn the laptop off, remove the
battery, remove external DC power cable, wait a few seconds, and then
 insert the battery.

Step 2 is optional, and depends on the old version and new version.
I've seen some laptops where it was necessary, and some laptops where it
 was not necessary.

Problem is that there aren't enough Python coders and not everyone has
 the luxury of learning python.

Perhaps other platforms that can run on the XO?

For you guys who've been doing this, like in Nepal, Is there any good
documentation out there for Sugarizing Javascript/CSS/Canvas/HTML5
apps or any web bundles (Java applet/Flash applet packages) in
general? Something that people with *zero* Python experience and who
work on Windows Mac can use.

Another reason I'm big on cross-platform stuff for the XO is that so
OLPC kids do not become digital 2nd hand digital citizens - they
should be able to enjoy the same apps the cool rich kids use.

We're looking at a possible pitch for the idea to at the auckland game
dev meetup on January as a talk. Game jams are big right now, esp with
http://ludumdare.com and for people who're into the demo scene
http://scene.org instead of building some stuff just to show off mad
skillz for free anyway, how about tapping them and building stuff for
kids? Even interactive digital art stuff?

 Hope everyone is well,

Hello!
You can use this:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activation_and_developer_keys#Setting_up_a_collection_stick

to recolect all Serial Number and UUID from your 30 XO-1.After, you can get all
developer keys at time...
And if you don't like it.. You can use the Serial Port on the XO... No?

Hello,

I am deploying more than 30 XO-1 in a village where I don't have Internet
facility. I have to update the firmware of all the XO.
Currently all XO-1 has q2e41 firmware version, which has to be updated to
q2e46.

Till q2e41 usually we don't need OK prompt, because it was providing bootfw.zip
file.
In next versions of q2e4 series they don't provide bootfw.zip file, only .rom
firmware.rom file. Without OK prompt we are not able to apply

commands to run firmware update, because it needs developers key to unlock or
make XO unsecured mode.

Can anyone tell me how to get OK prompt without developers key??

Hello!
Yesterday was published version 2 of I know America. After 1 month and 7300
downloads .. This version was ready. I have received thousands of emails with
congratulations, but I want reviews! I think more useful .. although not bad
thanks welcome ... The only way to improve something is in critical ... I was
on Thursday and Friday with people from the University of Loja, Ecuador and I
had 2 corrections I made about some names of 2 provinces Ecuador. Changes in
this version are:
- Fixed problems with scaling on different machines to XO: for
example, the JumPC. The problem was with the bar scores and progress.
Also in the displayed text during the presentation. - Corrected the
name of two provinces of Ecuador. - You end up translating the statistics
into English. - Small fixes are also conducted in other translations. -
Added: self.max_participants = 1 - Added bar breakthrough that will show
the progress of the game. - Added image of the screen JP about. - The
complete statistics for all countries. - Changed datos.png. It is now
replaced by bandera.png (which save the country flag). - Created
estadisticas.txt. This file stores information that is shown in the
browse mode. - Added the ability to jump, enabling the Back button,
animation to say goodbye. - When you are wrong, showed support but I did
not show question. Now shows the question below shows the help.
- Added button Show all in the browse mode.
For now is all .. I welcome your criticism!

Folks:

I have been watching the flurry of emails and updates to the Sugar activities,
the discussion surrounding including more rpm's in Sugar, and the desired OLPC
upgrading of GTK discussions with interest.

My concern is that feature creep, and with concurrent support dependency
increases, it could make the footprint and hardware requirements so large on an
XO-1, that it becomes untenable.

Has there been discussion as to when the development cycle might stop for the
older XO-1's, (perhaps strawmanning in as F14 with .94), so that this
innovation and progress can continue on the more modern platforms? Or, perhaps
have OS builds for the newer releases for an XO-1 be tailored to (and insist
on) a configuration woih an SD card of at least 2Gb, with 256Mb of swap, to be
installed on an XO-1? While this wouldn't address any issues wrt the small
main memory, or video performance, it might alleviate some of the footprint
size and swap thrashing concerns that might arise. A 2Gb SD card is a pretty
cheap h/w upgrade, imo. Perhaps I've just missed the discussion and all this
is already handled. Wouldn't be the first time :-)

Just curious.

Cheers

The XO-1 isn't manufactured anymore. When it was manufactured, it used
bare NAND rather than an SD card, and the cost of 2G of bare NAND was
significantly more expensive than 1G of bare NAND.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to ruffle any feathers, but the flat journal
is a really broken model when you stick in a USB stick with 2000+

The flat journal worked great on 8 floppies. It was obsoleted
 in 1982 or so.

The whole emphasis on the journal as filesystem interface was
another of those grand OLPC experiments. Unfortunately, unlike the
mesh, its failure was not followed by junking it and replacing it with
what every other computer does -- what works. This journalism
religion is also a major reason why kids can't read or edit the source
code of the OLPC -- because it isn't visible in a journal, and if it
was in there, it would be painful or impossible to find or organize.
Yes!

The new Unity 2D UI that Ubuntu defaults to makes the same decision,
  and it works well.

It works so well that I won't be using Ubuntu in the next release,
because they are forcing everyone to run Unity, I think on the theory
that if they force enough people to use it, some of them will fix all
the bugs and misfeatures in it. Unfortunately for them, this is not
a market where they have any power to compel users; we'll just go
 elsewhere.

RE: 11.2.0 release notes ready for review

2011-07-21 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

Hi Gary,

Complicated! ;)
As to why there is no 'don't save', well a couple of points:
1) the Journal was designed to be a log of activity not just a flat
list of saved data files, it would be great to have more interesting metadata
auto stored (e.g. length of time spent in activity, number of times resumed),
and/or to be able to better encourage the child to write short descriptions
about what they were doing for later review (e.g. I searched google for cool
pictures of sharks with lasers, for my school essay, but didn't find
one I liked.).
Yes, in theory. I am Uruguayan. I have seen thousands of XO .. No one uses the
journal that way, the little disk space (1 GB 400 MB are available) and when
you have hundreds of entries, and begins to complicate, to walk slower. And the
problem of find nothing is repeated often. Cause: You may need to teach
children the proper use of labels. But the kids out of an activity and never
notice that ... I have come across many machines you have to reflash because it
does not leave or enter the newspaper to delete things (in old sugar images, in
this new I not do a stress test) ...
2) The naming dialogue was added as an opportunity for the child to
provide a useful name, description and tags when they stop a new activity
instance. The activity state will very likely havebeen already
automatically stored in the Journal (e.g. activity state is stored in the
Journal whenever you switch views). So the 'don't save' button would really be
an 'erase this entry from the journal' button.
Changing the implementation of the saved, change this too
FWIW, there is already an accepted design for dropping this naming
dialogue (at least one deployment has already removed it from their builds) as
the psychology of a user who has just clicked 'Stop' is one of get me
out of here, I want to do something else now, not I would like to describe
what I was just doing, most folks seem to skips past the dialogue as fast as
they can, annoyed/distracted by the interruption. The replacement design is a
system wide 'detail view' dialogue (similar features as per the current Journal
details view) that can be opened at the users discretion while working in
an activity.
most folks seem to skips past the dialogue as fast as they can,
annoyed/distracted by the interruptionYes, I'm agree. Also is annoying is to
have the obligation (not freedom) the save something ..
For example, when I use the Activity Maze, entered to play at level 1. When I
return to the entrance that, start in 1! That's the point? Many of the
activities create an entry habit, butbear no relevant information, and
generate an endless list of meaningless entries(knowing that no labels are
used). In addition, save the entries as a record of what thechild does (one
kind of blog, journal) in practice is not viable .. Maybe I'm wrong ..
Thanks for taking the time to write some feedback, hope the above was
of some help.
Regards,--Gary

Alan

God question.
What is your idea about the X icon?

Do not close the activity?

There are times when I accidentally close one activity and think about this.
Close the activity without saving?

Some activities don't save any relevant information in the journal...

All the time, I used an activity, exit of it, click on the 'tick' button to
save the entry in the journal and need to delete it...

If one activity does not save relevant information and save to the Journal,
is a bug in the activity. Can you point to the failing activities?

Is important remember the window is opened only when you start a new instance
of the activity and by default you restart the last instance.

Gonzalo

Give to the users the freedom to save or not the entry, as in any system...

I think in this... It's possible? A very small change...

Hi
Yes, the TurtleArt is slow to capture because it turn on the camera, wait for
the pipeline, get a captureand save to the disk.. And after, the code load the
image and analize it!
I make a plugin to the TurtleArt, that was derivated for another project...
It uses Pygame 1.9.1 (included in the plugin) that get a captures very fast...
The actual code is for detect a color and calibrate the code to follow this
color... But is possible tomodify and make another things... The algorithm that
detect the promedial color of a zone of a image is implemented by Pygame...
The code:
http://butia.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=butia/butia;a=tree;f=followme_plugin;hb=HEAD

The same code in a .xo activity called FollowMe Butia is used to control the
Butia Robot...

 Hi

You can do something similar by placing a finger over the camera and shining
 a light on your finger.

Unfortunately TurtleArt is a little slow to capture your pulse, the following
executes a cycle in about 0.5 sec on a XO1.5

 forever
  show camera
  read pixel
  show heap
  empty heap

This prints the rgb of one pixel centre image ( which is OK because the image
 is out of focus)

 forever
  print brightness

averages over the image and takes round 2 seconds

Minus the Arduino, can this plug into the audio/mic port?

RE: 11.2.0 release notes ready for review

2011-07-20 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

Hi,
I'm down the new version ...
When you leave an activity, a window appears that asks the name of the journal
entry..
Is like this? (capture01.png)

Why is not this? (capture02.png)
Some activities don't save any relevant information in the journal...
All the time, I used an activity, exit of it, click on the 'tick' button tosave
the entry in the journal and need to delete it...
Give to the users the freedom to save or not the entry, as in any system...
I think in this... It's possible? A very small change...

RE: 11.2.0 release notes ready for review

2011-07-20 Thread Alan Jhonn Aguiar Schwyn

The idea of the X is not save the entry..
to avoid a shutdown by mistake could add the classic triangle of return ...
The final windows may be with 3 options:

Triangle: return to the activity (The problem is that usually the activity is
closed)
Cross: don't save the entry in the journal..
Tick: save the entry
It's a simple system, no? Or is't complicated?

God question.
What is your idea about the X icon?

Do not close the activity?

There are times when I accidentally close one activity and think about this.
Close the activity without saving?

Some activities don't save any relevant information in the journal...

All the time, I used an activity, exit of it, click on the 'tick' button to

If one activity does not save relevant information and save to the Journal,
is a bug in the activity. Can you point to the failing activities?

Is important remember the window is opened only when you start a new instance
of the activity and by default you restart the last instance.
