Ad hoc works well for very small groups (6) -- and in that case you want them all to be in the same channel... to be able to communicate! :-) It's for the under a tree scenario, no access points around. If there is a lot of interference, it means there are lots of APs. How would you propose measuring interference levels, and how long would this measurement be allowed to take? The measurement would delay the setup of the ad-hoc network on the laptop. The measurement would require the participation of another node in the ad-hoc network.
