[e-smith-devinfo] DummyNet and SME

2002-12-15 Thread Orville Carter
Just wondering if anyone has worked with DummyNet on SME Server?

Running a router from a "bootable floppy image of a system with FreeBSD"
is really not very exciting.

[It simulates/enforces queue and bandwidth limitations,
packet losses, and multipath effects. It also implements
variant of Weighted Fair Queueing called WF2Q+. It can be
used on user's workstations, or on FreeBSD machines acting as routers or
bridges.]

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] SME 5.5 server-manager

2002-07-13 Thread Orville Carter

Just a quick observation:
Using OPERA 6.01 ALL manager functions work as expected on SME5.5..
I have no difficulty navigating the links. In addition, the left-hand
browser pane/window
(with all the main links) does NOT disappear - (it does in Explorer 6.0.26).

Curious!

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] SME 5.5 server-manager

2002-07-13 Thread Orville Carter

Gordon,

The only 'bug' I have experiences after a full installation of SME5.5 is the
ms-explorer back-button double-click 'problem'. All else appears to be
working well.
Before submitting any bug report I will check a few browsers to see the
effect.
Perhaps a comprehensive review of browser/manager effects would be useful.

Charlie,

Greg may be referring to the behavior of 5.5 server-manager when making

After a change is updated the browser does not return to the main config

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Duplicate emails on server?

2002-04-23 Thread Orville Carter

Just to clear the air on this issue.
The duplicate email only occurs on mail FORWARDED from external accounts -
such as my speakeasy.net email account. My ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) account
is set to forward all email to my
SME email server ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) .

However, mail sent directly to my SME email server
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) is NOT duplicated.

It appears to be a problem from my ISP - NOT the SME boxes.

I will continue to monitor.

(Please pardon the intrusion!)

I noticed my auto backup tape running at 'strange' times.

PC Cmos Time 2:02PM (restarted the machine to check) but, the SME 5.1.2

If only the hardware was as relible as e-Smith/SME Server , we would
have a perfect world (well almost!).
Ah well, thats why we keep live backup servers on our system.
I know how it feels when a nic or rimm fails at 2am - and you only find out

Also, I have had good results with RealTek RTL8029 Nic's - although I found

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] smeserver-5.1beta1.iso

2001-11-26 Thread Orville Carter

Charlie,

SME 5.1beta1 is up and running on one our test servers.
This was a full install. We will give a whirl over the next few days.

If you have any specific tests you would like performed just let us know.
So far it looks good - nice BLUE screen! Hey, I prefer the "Lady in
Red"! :o).

Q1. Is there SMP support in this beta??
Q2 Is "esmith nofxsr" still required ??(Answer depends on Q1).
We are preparing a ASUS P3C-D, Dual PIII 700MHz (with 256 Meg RIMM), for SME
5.x trial.
Any notes of caution would be appreciated from anyone.

Regards

Eric,

Perhaps you should check the bulletin boards at www.e-smith.org
for further help. It is a valuable resource for new users, as these
questions have been addressed many times.
Admin access is via your browser using
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/e-smith-manager (4.x).
This is for ADMIN ACCESS ONLY - NOT FOR OTHER USERS!

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Terrorist Attacks.

2001-09-11 Thread Orville Carter

To Raymond, Dave, and all who expressed sadness at this senseless, cowardly
act
of terrorism, I say Thanks on the behalf of All New Yorkers.

I am a communications engineer/manager in NYC. I live in NYC. The
corporation I work for has (had) telcom facilities on several floors of the
towers. We cannot account for a number of our techs who monitor the
facilities 24x7.

My job take me into WTC often. In fact I was due for a visit later this
week.
The full horror can only be realized when the scene is viewed directly. You
cannot
help but let the tears flow. Other buildings close to WTC may also collapse.
Its just unbelievable.

Thanks Again for your kind words.

Orville Carter
New York City.

Understood! Most of the DSL in NY is via Alcatel central office gear.
Alcatel USB modems
are becoming the 'standard'. This may be to discourage the use of multiple
PC's on the dsl service.
In fact, it is a violation of the Verizon NY service agreement to have more
than one PC on their regular
dsl service. Naturally, you can pay a higher premium for multiple PC's.

I want to give it a try on a test server - just in case it is needed at a
later date.

WOW! Our ages are finally showing. Yeah! The old Timex/Sinclair 1000 - with
no storage.
Programs were rewritten fron scratch - everytime - and pray the power does
not fail. Then the Commodore Vic20
with 'audio' tape. Ha! It sure beat retyping those long programs from the
magazines. Finally US400 for a 1541
floppy drive. I was in heaven!

The audio tape would make a great project for enginering students. But audio
tape for data NOW?
I dont think so!
Gordon, shouldn't that read TRS-80? ;-).

[e-smith-devinfo] Setting The Record Straight!

2001-08-16 Thread Orville Carter

I want to issue a public apology to Charlie Brady, The E-Smith Team, and all
dev-list
users, for an incident which occurred some days back.

The incident was a copy of a personal email from Charlie, which I
inadvertently
copied to the dev-list.

Charlie, I have shared a good relationship with you, and the entire e-Smith
from some years.
My business is indebted to E-Smith in more ways than one.

My action in copying a personal email (without express permission) was a
violation of
the trust placed in me by Charlie, and the entire team.

I am sorry about this mishap. It has bother me deeply for some time.
I accept full responsibility for this error.

Charlie, I am deeply sorry. I offer sincere apologies to you and your fine
team.

Alexander,

My partner worked on the tomcat installation. Unfortunately, he is getting
married
in two weeks, and did not have the time to finish the documentation.

We are on hold at this time!

Sorry

Only the e-smith servers run 24x7. Sorry, that is not a workable solution.
We tried that many moons ago, but people forget and shut Win9x machnes down
while
others are printing. (yeah! we gave up on NT a long time ago - wanna buy a
NT cd, cheap?)

No! Only e-smith servers. E-smith servers handle the email, web-hosting,
tape backup, file and print sharing.
Thanks for the comeback. Its appreciated.

[e-smith-devinfo] USB Printer

2001-07-27 Thread Orville Carter

A client just offered us a NEW Epson inkjet printer. (Hey, we are nice
guys - and we work cheap ;-) )
It is an all USB printer. I would like to use it as a network printer on
e-Smith 4.2.x.

Any ideas on how to configure the USB for printers???

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] squidguard returns

Hi Guys,

FYI! We have a spare/test server with its own Ip address. If you need to
test any ideas on 4.1.x E-smith manager, we can assist. Just say the word.
This would avoid anyone
trying new config's on their production server. Its your call!

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] tomcat on e-smith

2001-07-26 Thread Orville Carter

Thanks Darrell,

I was not aware that the tomcat dir's were included in the auto TAPE backup.
It would be great to have all files replicated during a restore. A few weeks
back we had a sever failed (motherboard). I restored the server tape to a
backup
machine, but the tomcat - Jdk stuff was not restored. We reinstalled the
tomcat files from scratch.
(A bit irritating - but painless!)

You know how it goes - the focus is to get the servers back up -
documentation
is the last thing on your mind. :-).
We are preparing the install proceedure for tomcat, and will publish
shortly.

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] tomcat on e-smith

2001-07-26 Thread Orville Carter

Yes! We have installed tomcat (and JKD) on our e-smith 4.1.X servers.
Its a fairly straight forward process. The only one drawback - The jdk,
tomcat files
are not included in automatic backup and restore on e-smith. I reckoned one
of the software
guru's, in these here parts could solve that with little effort ;-).

If you like I can prepare a simple document, (with a bit of help to solve
the backup inclusion of jdk files)
to explain the steps.

We tried a few e-smith installations using Alcatel USB boxes on Verizon
PPoE.
Bottom line - we could not get it to function. The clients requested and
received
Speedstream Ethernet DSL boxes.
These work just GREAT!
Perhaps, someone has succeeded with USB boxes? I would like to know.

Ken,

I am still a bit puzzled by your comments. What part of the E-smith
distribution is "hard coded",
and cannot be read by lesser mortals??

We wish Darrel well - and are sad to see him go. He has made excellent
contributions to the
whole process.
However, the forum is NOT the place for a PARTNER to vent his feelings about
e-smith issues.
His integrity is what really matters - at least we corporate managers
understand that.

Dan,

Some of the "new guys" to E-smith server/gateway may have a bias against
large
software "behemoths". You know! The ones whick keep all the code locked away
in vaults.
Without know the facts e-smith inc may appear to be one of the 1000
programmer/millionaire
operations. Actually, the quality of the gateway/server software does give
that impression. :-)
Maybe some are in need of a reality check. Many of us have followed e-smith
from its humble
beginnings, and we are darn proud of what they have accomplished.

Most open-source is copyrighted by someone - but released under the terms of
the GPL.
Thanks for handling this issue with patience & grace! (I expected nothing
less from the E-smith crew).

You guys (and gals) are the best!

[e-smith-devinfo] new version of e-smith-backup available

2001-04-26 Thread Orville Carter

Charlie, Peter,

We upgraded our test server (4.1.1) to e-smith-backup-1.2.0-11.noarch.rpm
ftp://ftp.e-smith.com/pub/e-smith/current/updates/RPMS/e-smith-backup-1.2.0-
11.noarch.rpm

Here are the results. Tape drive is SCSI CTT8000I-S 4-8GB using TR4 (4/8gig)
tapes.
This test was repeated three times - same results. Restore also works!!!
It looks good!

We have tried backups on two machines with the following SCSI tape drives
(E-smith 4.1rc3 & 4.1.1 upgrades only)
1. DIGITAL QIC-2GB (with 2 Gig tapes) - Worked once after preparing with
Taper utilities.
Has not worked since. Tape drive tested on Win 98 - OK!

2. TANDBURG QIC-1000 (1 Gig tapes) - Never worked correctly - Taper reports
errors on
'Test end of tape". Tape drive tested on Win 98 station - OK!

This drive was also tested on a complete stock installation of 4.1.1.
1. CONNER CTT8000-S (with TR-4 tapes) - Taper reports "drive cannot seek"
and "Your tape drive returns illegal error at end of tape".
Also broken pipe message from cron daemon after backup attempt. Tape drive
tested on
Win98 - OK!
If any additional info is required, just say the word

I await your command, Cap'n Joe!

Hi Team,

I experienced this Web access problem on 4.1beta2-1. Installation was
without errors.

Here is the error message - after trying solution #2.

The following error was encountered:

I even restarted the system. Got the same message. However, I have access to

Ok! Here we go.
Tape is EXABYTE QIC-2Gb type. All tape drives were tested on one of my Win98
workstations.

Taper:
Make tape completed. 0 warning, 0 errors
Your tape drive can do fast fsf
Your tape drive can seek. 0 warning, 0 errors
[Test end of tape is taking forever. I am working on two e-smith servers
with scsi tape drives.

Welcome to the e-smith server and gateway.

Dan,

I had success with one backup after using Taper utilities to prepare the
tape.
However, a second backup, using the same tape, failed with messages similar
to yours.
We may have a transient problem here. I am trying Taper utilities
again to see what happens.

Tape Backup

2001-04-26 Thread Orville Carter

This a clip from e-smith 4.1rc3 tape backup notification (Cron Daemon). This
line appears for both
servers. The tape drives are SCSI. The backup appears to be fine. I was just
checking before we
upgraded each machine to e-smith4.1.
If someone has raised this before please point me in the right direction.
My question is on the two lines below. Is this something to be concerned
about?

DUMP: Broken Pipe
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Tape Backup

2001-04-26 Thread Orville Carter

After using Taper utilities the backup looks good.
Taper too several hours working on the tape - but it was worth it.

This is the auto backup using the e-smith console settings. Autobackup time:
4:00 am.
I guess we should prepare all tapes with Taper before usingperhaps?
Thanks for the input, guys.

Seasons Greetings to the E-smith team.

I just did my first test installation of E-smith 4.1beta2 (We decided to
skip beta1). During the next week
it will be "put through the paces" to see if it has 'the right stuff'.
(Yeah! Yeah! So shoot me!) :=)
I will attemp to document and feed back on any problems encountered.

It looks great! I am running tests using a dual PII 300 with 128 Meg Ram,
and
20 Gig SCSI drive & cd-rom, dual 3-com 10/100 nic's.

Keep up the good work.

Access to Primary website

2001-04-26 Thread Orville Carter

Hi Team,

This may not be a big deal - but it happened right after the upgrade from
4.1rc1 to 4.1rc3.

1. All directories under primary/html/ were empty.
2. All directories under primary/html/ were read-only.
3. Access to primary/html was not a problem and all files were intact.

Virtual domains on the server are fine.

I notice this glitch while trying to update my web site from NetObjects
Fusion.
[Access denied error - read only access!]
In fact, I cannot erase the directories primary/html/links and
/primary/html/youth_action

I made a backup before upgrading. Should I try a restore to see what
happens?

We got around it by changing the directory names (from NetObjects Fusion).

Tape errors, again?

2001-04-26 Thread Orville Carter

Team,

I noticed a rather peculiar behavior from flexbackup.

The backup works fine - provided no major activity occurs at the same time.

Last night the backup failed (PIPE BROKEN) while a large attachment was
incoming on an email. Backup is set for 2:00AM every night. The tape is also
changed each night.

This is the third time this has occured in the past 2 weeks. I just tested
flexbackup (again) by changing the
backup time to 12:00noon - it worked!

Or perhaps I am missing something

Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Access to Primary website

2001-04-26 Thread Orville Carter

I guess my excitement is getting ahead of me. Lets take it fro the top.

1. We have NetObjects Fusion installed on Win98 & NT4 Wk-Stn machines on the
our lan.
NetObjects is a MS-Windows based web design package.

2. All web sites are mounted as shares on the Windows workstations for easy
site updates.
This includes primary/html which contains mydomain.com stuff. NetObjects
Fusion
creates directories under primary/html using the NetObjects name of each
webpage. ie. If I create
a new page for mydomain.com called 'links' (using NetObjects), a directory
primary/html/links will be created
during NetObjects site update.
www.mydomain.com has been running one-smith4.0, 4.01 upgrade & 4.1rc1
upgrade - with no problems.

I recieved an email saying the links of my home-page were not working..
The info on the linked pages had been erased during the 4.1rc1 to 4.1rc3
upgrade.
My domain home page is located in primary/html
Linked pages are located in primary/html/links & primary/html/youth_action
Both directories were empty & read-only.

I follow your recommendation and forware to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just completed an upgrade of our main server - from 4.0 to 4.1rc1.
As expected the upgrade was FLAWLESS. All previous configuration info
was intact. Webmail was configured and works just GREAT!
Original websites are functioning with no problem. Process completed within
15 minutes.

NO ERRORS! WAY COOL!
Simply AWESOME guys!

Just finished testing with restore of several seperate files and it simply
works great.
Only thing is that one has to create a file with the filenames mentioned,
but it does work.

Now I am confident in upgrading as I have a working backup tape and
understand how to restore the data.

Thanks all for responding.

I am going to upgrade tomorrow morning to RC2 and will report back.

Tape backup works great!
Kernel 2.2.16-22smp on a 2-processor i686 is displayed!

I have not encountered a single error up to this point. (We were re-booted
several times to check. Yeah! Yeah! Shoot me!)
System configuration was "a piece of cake".

Squidguard?

2001-04-25 Thread Orville Carter

Hi Team,

I dont know if this is important, but I received three "unsubscribe"
messages
in my admin email box. The intended email box was [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Somehow these messages are coming to my e-Smith email server.

I am running squidguard on one of my e-Smith 4.1.1 machines, which is my
home/office proxy.

How can this be?

This was done on a e-Smith 4.1.1 with last tape backup updates.
Tape drive is SCSI using TR4. This drive performs a successful backup every
night.
Hope this helps.

Sorry about the panic. Someone is trying to unsubscribe using the Squidguard
mailing list address.

I guess everyone on that list is getting these notices.

The person should be using: [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word
unsubscribe in the body,
NOT [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Gordon,

I did the following after making the solution #2 changes: (I hope this is
it)

... /root]# /sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/squid/squid.conf

The system ran a process for few seconds and returned to the prompt.

Well,... backup was set for 11:30 am - and its running. We will see what
happens.
The tape drive is only 2.1 gig.

G' Morning all,.(Yawwwnn!) Sorry!

I am using the latest flexbackup (e-smith-backup-1.2.0-11.noarch.rpm)

My question: Is flexbackup appending, or overwriting the tape from the
beginning
Yes! I left the same tape in for the past 3 days - Yeah, I know,

On this server the snapshot is 542meg, and the scsi tape is 2.1gig.

We are replacing this 2gig tape drive with a SCSI CTT8000I-S 4-8GB using TR4
(4/8gig) tapes
That should hold us for a while.
We are always on the lookout for a bigger tape drive.

Also, we will keep and eye on these flexbackup messages.

Thanks

Update!
This command works without errors.
/usr/bin/flexbackup -fs all -erase

I guess flexback was appending the tape during backups, and reach end of
tape ??? ???
