New UI? Huh? What is it supposed to be? A fproxy theme?
I don't think we have the time for implementing anything besides new themes
before 0.8 we need to fix too many issues.

I also haven't heard anything about a new Freetalk UI? :)

[freenet-dev] Development of Free Net Project

2010-02-06 Thread Karol Pysniak
Hi,
I would like to take part in the development of Free Net Project as my
contribution to Google Summer of Code. I am especially interested in
Data Bases, Algorithms and AI. I think that it would be great to try to
create new, 'intelligent' search engine.

I can program in Java/C++/C/Haskell/Assembler(IA-32).

Best wishes,
Karol Pysniak.

No, it will be based on GWT, and it will run along-side FProxy. It will not
provide all the functionality of FProxy, the primary goal is to provide a
user-friendly interface for "casual" users.

The idea is that the new UI will eventually incorporate Freetalk
functionality, and ultimately replace Freetalk's UI, but that is a long way
off.

The initial goal is to get a framework started that sets some
good precedents for a nice clean UI design that starts with the user's needs
and works backwards, rather than the other way around (which is more-or-less
how FProxy came about).

I think it's a very good starting point :).

Random thoughts:

- Make a security level icon (like a wireless signal tray applet)
showing your security status based on, for example, your darknet-opennet
peer ratio.

- Implement notifications like "freesite updated" in a sidebar or
something. IMHO quite important.

- Make some of the bookmarks available at the front page in one way or
another. Chances are that the user wants to go straight to one of them.
especially the indexes.

- Show the version/build numbers in the status drop-down. Quite
important for any kind of troubleshooting.

- When Freenet is updating itself, show it in the status bar instead of
a traditional notification.

- Make the "f" in the "freenet" above the search box uppercase. Like the
news header.

Nice!

One question though : will the new UI handle the download/upload list, and if
not, why?

Except for that, I think it's nice, clean, and silk :)

Oh, and will the security levels be taken into account, or not? (it would take
one line in the status dropdown, and I think it's important for a software
like Freenet)
