[DDN] video -- sergey brin at the univ. of california

2006-09-29 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

this weekend you have a choice of watching the standard fare on
television, or watching a video of sergey brin (co-founder of google)
talking about the democratizing effects of technology -- and other
topics.

see the google video file at http://tinyurl.com/gewa7

i love how computer science professor dr. marti hearst introduces
sergey brin: "today we are lucky enough to have a visiting speaker,
sergey brin, from google. some of you might have even heard of
google."

and i love the way sergey brin indicates to this class of computer
science students that their questions are more important than
anything he has to say.

sergey brin credits his creativity and sense of wonder from the
montessori school he attended that's close to where i work in takoma
park, maryland. (he attended paint branch montessori school, in
adelphi, maryland, from kindergarten to 5th grade.)

here's something to wonder about. in what ways are you increasing
the sense of wonder of people in your community? how often have
you told someone this month that, "curiosity is its own reward?"

how often do you support the creativity of others you encouter
each day? is it possible to support other people's creativity
without much work, effort, or expense?

if wisdom begins with wonder, are we wondering enough? what are
the fruits of wondering? what can we learn about wondering from
children?

[DDN] some thoughts about warren buffet's donation

2006-09-19 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

i'm working on a little video project which shares multiple
points of views about warren buffet's large donation to the gates
foundation.

i'll be finished with this video project in a week or two, but
some of you might enjoy seeing the result so far. i've uploaded the
work-in-progress quicktime to the internet archive at

   http://tinyurl.com/hjgro

you'll need a G4 Mac (or better) and quicktime 7 to view this
video. this video ought to play well on most pentium 3 and pentium 4
windows computers -- as well as linux computers. apologies to the G3
mac users that i needed to leave behind on this project.

this video also plays well on linux, using a program named mplayer.

are you interested in creating some of your own videos like
this? i've posted some screencasts explaining the steps at
http://www.rosetimes.com

click on the link "making rosetimes" at the top right of this
web site.
when you reach the internet archive (http://www.archive.org), my three
how-to quicktimes can be found on the left side of the screen.

those of you on this list involved with youth and
multimedia, this is the kind of multimedia project that youth might
enjoy working on. the dramatic angle is something youth might find
creatively engaging.

[DDN] towards musical inclusion

2006-09-08 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

i recently came across a neat new musical instrument, the "strumstick,"
which is a simplified guitar with just 3 strings. this instrument, invented by a
very creative person in new jersey, sounds a bit like a banjo and a bit like a
hammered dulcimer.

it's very easy to play and will bring musical inclusion to many more
people.

i'm using youtube to help people learn about this instrument and i'm
sending fan email to the inventor today to let him know how much i appreciate
his invention.

the videos i've uploaded to youtube are at

Ode to Joy (Strumstick version)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=x2SxiORP0Ig

Joy to the World (Strumstick version)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=uAPA1CxYlBg

both of these melodies are in the public domain. in the coming weeks
i'll be uploading more strumstick videos to youtube. you'll be able to find them
by searching youtube for the word strumstick.

- phil

btw, here in the washington dc-area i'm also going to be giving strumstick
lessons in people's homes. i paid $150 for my "Grand Strumstick" and i'll be
able to recoup the cost fairly quickly by teaching a few lessons.

i'm using craigslist and youtube to help me find strumstick (and guitar)
students.

i'll be volunteering in some DC-area shelters to help people learn the
strumstick, too. i've been teaching the strumstick to the kids of some friends
of mine and they loved playing it.

Subject: Two Great K12 Open Source Interviews from South Africa and Indiana
  To: "" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

~

Yesterday was a fun day! I started very early in
order to be able to catch Hilton Theunissen in South
Africa, who has led the tuXlab project to install
Linux thin-client in 200 schools. Then late in the
day Mike Huffman and Laura Taylor provided insight
into the Indiana Affordable Classroom Computers for
Every Secondary Student (ACCESS) program. (To
download the mp3 or ogg files, go to
http://www.K12OpenSource.com/Interviews.)

These are both fascinating interviews, and along
with the interview with the folks from Atlanta
Public Schools last week, they are confirming a
pattern that deserve some real exploration:
high-priced, high-maintenance computers have led to
relatively little actual student time in front of
them (35 minutes a week per student in the case of
Indiana, at a cost of $100 million a year!);
low-cost computer solutions provide significantly
more actual time in front of computers for students,
and the result is dramatic engagement by students
and teachers, and significant academic success (some
measured and some expected).

This is interesting to me, since I've lately been
very aware that while the Windows, Linux, and Mac
folks fight the battle of which OS is best, there is
still a more fundamental and hotly-debated question
with regard to computers in education: do they
actually help students do better for all the money
that is spent on them? What Atlanta and Indiana seem
to show is that because it has been so costly to
have computers in schools, they haven't been truly
available enough for teachers or students to
integrate their use into the curriculum. But in
programs that are dedicated to cost-effectively
getting the computers into the classrooms in
sufficient quantity to impact education, the results
are significant and exciting. And the "cost
effective" part belongs to Linux and Open Source...

This Thursday night (August 17), it's time to hear
from "our favorite Moodler," Michelle Moore from
remote-Learner.net. The one-hour interview will be
broadcast live at 5:00 pm PDT / 8:00 pm EDT, and
will also be available afterwards in recorded form.
Links to join the live Skypecast, to leave
questions, or to learn more are at
www.K12OpenSource.com/Interviews.

The following weeks I'll be interviewing Victoria
Davis (Westwood Schools) and Adam Frey (Wikispaces)
about Wikis, and Ruth Lutes and Ragavan Srinivasan
(both from HP) about Open Source Licensing. To
suggest future interview topics, or to contribute to
the wiki, visit K12OpenSource.com.

Today was also my first day flying solo--which
included doing the sound editing and uploading...
Wow! Hope you like them
Best always,

Steve Hargadon

[DDN] creative commons children's story in the news

2006-08-04 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi Digital Divide Network community -

the takoma gazette newspaper (in takoma park, maryland) has a very nice
article this week about a collaborative storytelling project i've been involved
with.

 see http://tinyurl.com/hujkn

the article is about a rich media children's story that i've posted on the
web at http://sammybook.blogspot.com

if you know any storytelling enthuasists in the washington dc-area, do
suggest that they stop by the takoma park maryland library to chat with me
sometime. i work here mondays thru friday from noon to 6 pm. the address here
is 101 philadelphia ave, takoma park, maryland 20912. (subway stop: Takoma, on
the Red Line.)

or people can send me an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject:
storytelling

  - phil

on the web site for the story at http://sammybook.blogspot.com you'll see that
i list the Digital Divide Network as one of the communities i support. i'm
hoping that might steer some web traffic to our community.

for those who might be wondering, i created the story web site using the free
blogger.com service, owned by google. when i need a quick, elegant web site, i
set up another blog on blogger.com. it takes me about 2 minutes to do so.

i currently have about 80 "blogs" on blogger.com

(oops, i got a bit carried away, but the service is free and it suits my
needs, so i use it. )

someday i'll teach myself web design using the free http://nvu.com
program. until then, i'll be creatings "blogs" wholesale on blogger.com

later in august i'll be submitting this rich media children's story to
digg.com so that a wider group of people can learn about this project. if you
don't yet have an account on digg, this is a good time to register for one.

steve, this is a good question. openoffice.org is a gateway drug.
(in a good sense.) people who transition to openoffice.org on windows
are far more likely to transition to openoffice.org on linux down the road.

their main work app will have fit them like a glove by then --

[DDN] user demand for openoffice 2.0 books

2006-07-20 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi Digital Divide Network community -

the most talented author of books about openoffice, solveig haughland,
blogs that barnes and nobles is telling her publisher that there is no real
demand for openoffice books and that they won't stock her excellent new
openoffice 2.0 book.

  see http://openoffice.blogs.com/

microsoft in the past has resorted to all sorts of underhanded tactics. i
don't know if they're resorting to paying barnes and noble to not stock
openoffice.org books, but it would not surprise me if they were.

you can do something about this if you live in the united states (or
canada.) simply call your local barnes and noble bookstore and inquire if they
sell any books about openoffice.org

you can bet barnes and nobles keeps track of what books people are asking
for. please don't call barnes and nobles unless you actually would buy an
openoffice book. i'm not asking folks to create an artificial demand for the
book. i'm just asking folks to speak up if this new openoffice.org book (and
other openoffice.org books) are something you would want to see on a barnes and
noble bookstore shelf.

[DDN] video interview with paul lamb in san francisco area

2006-07-20 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi Digital Divide Network -

for those who might be interested, i've posted on the web a rosetimes video
interview with paul lamb, a technology access activist in the san francico area.
paul is the co-founder of a successful nonprofit organization named StreetTech.
he also writes about digital divide topics for CNET and the San Francisco
Chronicle.

 see http://rosetimes.com

 - phil

earlier this week some friends and i tried creating some rosetimes with apple's
final cut software. you can see a two minute full dv clip from our experiments
at http://www.writersforliteracy.org/rosetimedv.mov

this is a large file. (about 450 megabytes.) it looks and sounds pretty good.
since this quicktime file does not have "fast start," you need to wait until it
entirely transfers before you can view it.

we created this video using final cut express 3 HD, the consumer version of
apple's final cut software.

i'm working on a feature length article about rosetimes for MAKE magazine.
http://makezine.com

i'll share further info about that article once i've sent it off to MAKE.

Quoting John Thompson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

> What are the implications of Web 2.0, such as the YouTube site, on the

hi john -

thanks for asking. the rise of sites such as youtube are generally a good
sign for greater community participation in media production. community video on
the web follows in the footsteps of the blogging and podcasting movements.

i follow news in the area of participatory media on the
http://unmediated.org web site. anyone can submit news items to unmediated,
too.

if youtube is currently at 100 million videos viewed per day, how long will
it take to reach the 1 billion videos viewed per day level? perhaps just
another year.

meanwhile, the rise of video on the web brings hope to the portability of
learning, when it will be common for teachers to access educational videos from
the web to distribute to their students.

some of those students will view those videos on donated computers. some
might use portable video viewing devices. it's hard to know where we'll end up
with this, but it looks like we're heading in the right direction.

[DDN] siobhan champ-black rosetime

2006-07-03 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi Digital Divide Network community -

i've uploaded to the web a rosetime (i.e. video interview) with DDN member
siobhan champ-blackwell, from omaha, nebraska. siobhan is one of the most
active members on the DDN list. this is an opportunity to meet her in person.

i've created a link to her rosetime at http://rosetimes.com

you can learn more about siobhan at her DDN profile
http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/siobhanchamp-blackwell

the above-mentioned interview is best viewed with a high speed internet
connection. i did post a smaller file -- with a static graphics -- to give
dial-up users a taste of what rosetimes are about.

these quicktime videos are best viewed with firefox, safari, opera or
camino web browsers. you might need to download quicktime (free) from
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download

i've tested these rosetimes on linux systems and they play fine using
mplayer on a fedora core 4 box. these video files also play fine on windows
computers.

 - phil

btw, on the right side of the rosetimes.com web site i've posted a link to some
quicktime files explaining how anyone can create rosetimes using imovie and
quicktime pro. i've also posted info on the kind of equipment needed to create
rosetimes.

i should point out that you don't even need a digital camcorder to create a
good looking/sounding rosetime. as long as your camcorder has a microphone input
jack, you have the tools need to create a rosetime.

to show the potential of analog-shot video, here's some video i shot a
couple years ago with a donated sony 8 mm camcorder.
http://www.archive.org/details/juanwilliamsonmarshall

if you shoot on analog video format, you do need to convert it to digital
form to create a rosetime. that's not all that difficult these days. many
digital camcorders can perform that function. perhaps you have a friend who owns
a digital camcorder that you can use for the occasional video conversion.

if there's anyone on this list who'd like to try creating a rosetime,
kindly send me an email off-list with the subject: creating a rosetime

[DDN] registering for a digg account

2006-06-22 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi Digital Divide Network community -

the community-controlled tech news web site named digg.com is now receiving
9 million site visits per day.

when news of the DDN community reaching its 10,000 registered member comes
out, we have the power within our community to propel that news to the front
page of digg. (it only takes about 50 diggs (i.e. votes of approval) within 24
hours for a submitted story to rise to the front page of digg.)

if you don't yet have a digg.com account yet, thanks for registering for
one today. your mouse click can propel our community forward.

if news about the DDN community reaches the front page of digg, then it
would be more likely that Wired magazine (or somesuch) might want to cover the
Digital Divide Network in an article.

that would be a needed (and important) step forward for the movement.
it would also be the catalyst in moving our community from 10,000 members to
100,000 members.

as my high school math teacher used to say with a wink when he handed
out exams, "remember, there is always strength in numbers." so true.

[DDN] statistical milestones for DDN and moodle.org sites

2006-06-18 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi Digital Divide Network community -

the number of registered users on the DDN web site is getting close to
10,000. (9,934 as of sunday, june 18, 2006.)

the DDN web site usually adds about 5 to 10 new people per day, so it
looks like the 10,000 registered user milestone will be happening around july 1,
2006.

in related news, the moodle.org web site blasted by the 100,000
registered users mark a month or two ago. back in febuary, 2006, there were
75,000 registered users on the moodle.org site.

now that number stands at 115,000 users.

see http://moodle.org/stats

moodle is heading towards the million registered users mark -- and
beyond. as a free distance learning tool, that's a big deal for those of us
working to expand access to learning.

if you value expanded access to education, stop by to register on the
moodle web site. you'll be propelling that site towards the million registered
users mark.

that's quite some news that bill gates will be stepping down from his full

considering the overwhelmingly dominant role microsoft has played in
computers until this point, this might signal a turning point in the history of

[DDN] new job description - public geek

2006-06-16 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi Digital Divide Network community -

at the public library where i work i asked my supervisor if i could change my
job title to "public geek." she's a geek herself and laughed approvingly at the
suggestion.

she then explained that it's a bit involved changing a job title when you
work for a city government, but she said it would be fine if i described myself
to the public (and co-workers) as the "public geek."

i was hired with a different job title, but my responsibilities truly are
those of a public geek, and so i say...

i hold these geeks to be self-evident, that all geeks are created equal and
that they are endowed by their creator with certain kinds of skills, and that
they pursue curiosity in countless ways in order to better serve the public.

and for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the

our fortunes and our sacred honor.

[DDN] rosetimes -- online video interviews

2006-06-06 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi Digital Divide Network community -

the summer of 2004 saw the invention of podcasts, so i thought it might be
fun to invent something for the summer of 2006.

i'm a big fan of the charlie rose interview show on public television (here
in the united states) and have been wondering if there is a way that anyone
could interview anyone on the internet -- with crystal clear audio and video.

"rosetimes" are video interviews that take place over the internet with a
camcorder at each side. the resulting pristine videos can then be merged using
apple's quicktime pro -- and hosted for free on the internet archive.

unlike youtube.com and other recent video upstarts, the internet archive
doesn't place a limit on the duration of the videos you upload.

here are two sample rosetimes i've created to show what a rosetime looks
like. one of these is a short interview with myself and the other is a book
review where i appear in two videos on screen offering different points of view
about the book.

http://www.writersforliteracy.org/rosetimesselfinterview6.mov

http://www.writersforliteracy.org/braillebookreview.mov

these are not typical rosetimes. a typical rosetime would have two (or
more) people talking to each other either in interview or discussion.

the above two rostimes run well on linux, macintosh, and windows. (i
tested these on a fedora core 4 box, running mplayer, at the public library
where i work.)

i designed the rosetimes above so that they run well on older computers,
too, so you can view them on G3 macs running mac os 9. older macs can also be
used for creating rosetimes. you might be able to run these on pentium 2
computers. the processing power needed to view these is not all that large. a
pentium 2 with 266 MHz processor could probably do the trick. (thanks in advance
to anyone on this list who can report back to the list about that.)

i'll be releasing for free the instructions for making rosetimes. just
wanted to give people on this list a heads up. a more formal announcement about
rosetimes will be happening towards the end of june (or early july), after i've
assembled a couple more actual rosetimes.

you can likely create rosetimes on windows computers. i haven't tried
yet. i'll be sharing info about that after i've given that a try. naturally,
i'm very interested in the creation of rosetimes on linux systems.

i'm hoping that rosetimes will be another tool that will bring greater
participation in the marketplace of ideas. there are many excellent ideas out
there that never see the light of day. i'm hoping that rosetimes will show those
ideas the light of day, letting us all move forward with work that needs to get
done.

  - phil

if you know someone who ought to be on this email list, thanks for inviting them
onto the list. we need their ideas, their energy, their momentum to build a
more participatory society.

people can easily join this email list when the register on the Digital Divide

[DDN] mark glaser on dsl and the digital divide

2006-06-01 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

mark glaser, a thoughtful commentator about participatory journalism, is
blogging about the pricing of DSL and the digital divide, here in the united
states. http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/

if you have thoughts on the topic, you can pitch in via the comments on his
blog. mark reads his comments and often refers to them in his blog. i find him
to be a top notch blogger.

if you have filled in your Digital Divide Network profile, you can list
that as your web site when leaving a comment on this site (or other sites.)
that will help the DDN community achieve greater public visibility.

here is a collection of some model DDN profiles to give you some ideas of
what you can write in your DDN profile.

http://www.his.com/pshapiro/ddnprofiles.html

you can edit your DDN profile by clicking on Edit My Profile at the top
left of the DDN web site. then click on the About Me tab.

your profile can include links to articles you've written, multimedia
you've made and even links to other DDN profiles.

granted, it's not easy writing about oneself, but you bring real value
to the DDN community when you fill in your DDN profile.

we are as one only to the extent that we are as one.

 - phil

mark glaser lives in san francisco, as i recall, so it's especially important
for DDN members in the Bay Area to be pitching in with comments on mark's
MediaShift blog.

[DDN] olympus digital projector for $499

2006-05-29 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi DDN community -

this olympus projector being sold at a memorial day discount for $499 looks
like it offers a lot. reading thru its features, i see it supports high-def
video (1080i).

  http://tinyurl.com/k4ox6

1000 lumens is not immensely bright, but for $499, that's a nice
projector.

i wish the members of the DDN community outside of the united states
would have access to such bargains, too. longer term we need to figure out a
way to make that happen.

[DDN] article - camcorder reviewing expert still in college

2006-05-28 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi Digital Divide Network community -

this newspaper article about a talented young entrepreneur is very
inspiring.

   http://csmonitor.com/2006/0329/p13s03-stct.html

i wouldn't be surprised if robin liss joins the DDN community after her
graduation from tufts university this year.

it sounds like she is heading in the right direction.

all these years i've been visiting the camcorderinfo.com web site and
had no idea it was founded by a teen. even as a high school student, robin liss
wrote camcorder reviews better than most video professionals. kudos to her for
forging her own path.

we could all learn a thing or two from her.

- phil

if robin liss started camcorderinfo.com in 1997 and she is now a graduating
college senior, then she may well have started the business when she was in
middle school.

[DDN] computerworld magazine on microsoft's intimidation tactics

2006-05-11 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi Digital Divide Network community -

the editor in chief of computerworld magazine, don tennant, has a few choice
words about microsoft's continued use of intimidation tactics.

 see
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=86

  or

  http://tinyurl.com/oqull

i attended both of the conferences that ralph nader organized
regarding microsoft's anticompetitive practices, here in washington dc in the
late 1990's.

intimidation was the word used over and over again by people who were
called to speak.

a reporter from a newspaper in wisconsin testified that when she wrote
an article that was not favorable to microsoft, the next day bill gates placed a
phone call to the editorial board of the newspaper telling them to - "take care
of this matter." she said in no other instance has a company ever called that
newspaper's editorial board to threaten them.

i prefer we as a community not launch into a long message thread
regarding microsoft. those discussions have been hash and rehashed. we do need
to focus our brainwidth on constructive work we can be doing in our communities.

those of us working on access issues are naturally concerned when a
company uses tactics to unfairly maintain its market share.

if you want to learn more about microsoft's historical practices, ask
around in geek circles you move in what views and perspectives people might
have. you can learn a lot by listening.

  - phil shapiro

for context on microsoft, there's probably no better book than Hard Drive: Bill
Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire.

http://tinyurl.com/fxq5c

in that book you'll find out about the slogan "DOS ain't done until Lotus won't
run" and other instructive matters regarding microsoft practices.

this book was written by two Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporters. generally
speaking, reporters tend to tell the truth. they become quickly former-reporters
if they do anything else.

[DDN] digital camcorder donation

2006-05-02 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi Digital Divide Network community -

some happy news to share. a digital camcorder has been donated to the DDN
community for us to use in whatever way we please. this camcorder is a canon
zr500. it comes with a lavalier (clip on) microphone.

one possible use of this camcorder might be for interviews between DDN
community members. such interviews could be conducted over the internet using
the free gizmo internet phone service.

with both people in the interview capturing their own video and audio,
internet latencies become a non-issue. the two video files can be merged into a
single quicktime file using quicktime pro (or final cut.)

this kind of interview conducted over the internet has become commonly
known as a “rosetime,” in honor of charlie rose, who conducts a popular
interview program on public television, here in the united states.

rosetimes can be uploaded for free to the internet archive, which
provides free, permanent web hosting. (http://www.archive.org)

here within the DDN community there is a treasure trove of interesting
stories from members in our community. we're not going to wait around for
anyone else to tell these stories. we're going to tell them ourselves.

sorry i don't have some rosetimes to share with you today, but i hope to
have a couple uploaded before the “Beyond Broadcast” conference in cambridge,
mass., later this month.

the rosetime genre owes its existence to the DDN community. some of the
people involved in bringing this genre to life include -

and of course, cedar pruitt and andy carvin, played an important role,

rosetimes to life include -

kenyatta cheese
ryanne hodson
jay dedman
michael verdi
steve garfield
j.d. lasica
dan gillmor
hal cauthen
brewster kahle

for those of you who are new to the Digital Divide Network, here is a
quick overview of some of the folks you might see in rosetimes in the coming
months.

 http://www.his.com/~pshapiro/ddnprofiles.html

if you're interested in appearing in a rosetime (or would like to
volunteer time to conduct some), thanks for sending me an email with the word
“rosetime” in the subject line. i'll be sending some follow-up emails explaining
the process for creating rosetimes using imovie and quicktime pro. (quicktime
pro sells for $30 from apple computer.)

 phil

btw, if you're new to the Digital Divide Network and have not yet filled in your
profile on the DDN web site, you bring value to the movement by doing so. since
it is never easy to write about yourself, you might get some ideas from some of
the existing profiles (above.)

some of the most interesting ideas within the DDN community come from folks
outside of the united states. it would be a good thing for the DDN community to
find a way to get some digital camcorders to loan to people outside of the
united states. if you're interested in helping with that, thanks for sending me
an email with the subject: international

[DDN] video blogging class overview

2006-04-26 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

for those who might be thinking about teaching a class on video blogging,
appended below is an overview of a 4 session (4 times 1.5 hours) class i'm
teaching on video blogging in takoma park, maryland. feel free to use this in
whatever way helps you.

the first session of the class went very well last night. here's a
20-second video we created for an imaginary product one of the students thought
up -- "frozen lizard pops."

as a group, we brainstormed what the text of this commercial and who in the
group would be saying which parts of the text.

http://www.writersforliteracy.org/videobloggingclass1.mp4

all of the students in this class were pretty astounded at the short amount
of time between when we were brainstorming this commercial to when we were
viewing it on the web. they left the class with a feeling of empowerment -- of
possibilities.

it was a fun class to teach. it's useful to note that i don't yet have a
video blog myself. i have the component skills for creating a video blog,
though.

Hi,

I've set up a website for people who are implementing, or who are
considering implementing, the Drupal Content Management System in
libraries. Drupalib (http://drupalib.interoperating.info/) is intended
as a place for Drupal implementors to share ideas, configurations,
themes, and maybe even to incubate the development of some modules that
allow commonly desired functionality in library websites. It's based
roughly on drupaled (http://drupaled.org/), and features a blog, a
forum, and a listing of drupal sites implemented by libraries.

i wonder if any literacy organizations in portland might create rich media
educational materials that anyone could have access to for free?

distance learning possibilities using moodle (free, open source software)
are also very ripe when everyone in the city gets free wireless internet.

i asked the good god google to tell me who is doing computer refurbishing
in portland. google pointed me to

 http://www.freegeek.org/

 http://www.nwcgiving.org/

and i should mention that one of my favorite pacific northwest
organizations, the RECA Foundation, is about 200 miles away in Kennewick,
Washington.

[DDN] "most blogged articles" on the new york times

2006-04-04 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

here's an opportunity for our community to provide feedback about articles
in the new york times. the new redesign of the new york times web site has a
feature which lists the 20 most blogged articles.

 http://www.nytimes.com/gst/mostblogged.html

so if you have a blog, no matter what you write, if you link to a
particular new york times article, the new york times will be aware of your blog
entry.

there is free blogging available right on the DDN web site
http://www.digitaldivide.net -- or you can use many other free blogging
services. blogger.com is one of the best.

a good question to ask yourself is how much of your communication is
"internal," directed to people who care about this issue in the same way you do.
and how much of it is "external," visible to the general public?

if your answer is that 100 percent of your communication is internal, then
it's time for you to start blogging.

we should all be shooting for a goal of at least 40 percent of our
communication to be external. otherwise we'll end up doing what mike myers of
saturday night live suggests - "talk among yourselves."

[DDN] Time magazine going more digital

2006-03-30 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

the wall street journal reports that Time magazine, which prides itself
on telling people things they already know (honestly, the editor of Time was on
television saying that a year or two ago), is going more digital.

"Time management has taken steps to dissolve the divisions between its Web and
print operations. It has made selling ads online a priority and demanded that
writers produce more copy for its Web sites. It is also expanding the sites to
include more video, blogs and photographs."

we can look forward to learning more about what we already know -- now in

[DDN] apple computer at 30 -- thinking back on the beginning

2006-03-29 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

the washington post asked me for a quote about apple's 30th birthday, coming
up this saturday, april 1.

they may or may not end up using the quote. just wanted to share it here,
for what it's worth.

Apple Computer was founded by two idealistic people yearning to bring
computing out of big corporations and big government into the hands of ordinary
people. That spirit of popular empowerment is reawakened with the blogging and
podcasting phenomenon -- and with desktop video and music production, a tidal
wave of creativity has been unleashed. When a musician can publish their music
online for $15 -- without any royalties being received by middlemen, a great
step forward in civilization has occurred. (i.e. http://tunecore.com)
The dream, started so long ago, is materializing in ways undreamt of.

what i didn't say in the above quote is that my time is being spent more
and more with linux and other free software projects. i choose to use tools
that will bring the greatest empowerment to myself and my community.

can these two dreams co-exist? they can, for me. will there be a place for
microsoft in the future of computing? there might be. or there might not be. it
depends on whether the company is able to reinvent itself.

[DDN] using squeet.com to support the digg submissions of friends

2006-03-28 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

when andy carvin submitted this story to digg.com a few minutes ago, i was
alerted via email by a free service at http://squeet.com(see appended short
email below.)

last week i told squeet.com to send me an email from the rss feed of digg
submissions by my digg.com friends. i copied and pasted the rss feed located at
the bottom left of this web page.

  http://digg.com/users/pshapiro/friends/submitted

it takes me just a second to digg (i.e. vote my approval of an story) by
clicking on the number to the left of the story.

if a story receives 50 or more diggs within a 12 hour period, it usually
reaches the front page of digg.com, which gets 800,000 web sites visits per day.

digg.com is growing like wildfire. i wouldn't be surprised if the site
receives 5 million web sites visits per day by the end of this year.

we can use our smarts to empower the technology access movement.
we can place the issue of technology and educational access in the forefront of
people's minds. we have the tools to do that.

There's been so much talk among educators on whether Wikipedia should be banned
from school, that it may come as a surprise to some that a school has actually
been banned from Wikipedia. This raises questions as to why aren't more schools
teaching students about using Wikipedia constructively.

[DDN] Tip About Using the Internet Archive's Free Web Hosting

2006-03-27 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community members -

here's a short news item i wrote for the monthly news of the virginia
macintosh users group, a computer club i belong to here in the washington
dc-area. http://www.vmug.org

thought it might be of interest.

  - phil

Tip About Using the Internet Archive's Free Web Hosting

Do you have some videos you've created that you'd like to make available
for the world to see? Do you own all the rights to the video? (i.e. Are the
music and images in the video not copyright by someone else?)

Then the free web hosting on the Internet Archive is a good choice.
http://www.archive.org

As an example, here is a 52-minute (400 megabyte) QuickTime file that VMUG
member Phil Shapiro recently uploaded to the Internet Archive. To view this
video, click on the word QuickTime in blue on the left of your screen.

http://www.archive.org/details/multimediastorytelling

QuickTimes are best viewed using Safari or Firefox. Internet Explorer sometimes
makes you wait for the QuickTime to completely transfer before you can start
watching it.

Phil used Cyberduck to do the uploading. http://cyberduck.ch/

Cyberduck is a free download. You can make a donation to the creators of
Cyberduck if you find the program useful.

Using a cable modem, this 52-minute video took about 3 hours to upload to
the Internet Archive. If you have Verizon's fiber optic service, you could
probably upload this video in about an hour (or less.)

Using a dual-processor G5 PowerMac, this video took about 40 minutes to
export from iMovie, using Share on the File menu.

All this is to say that it's entirely possible to shoot a video, edit it
and upload it to the Internet Archive all on the same day. It takes about a day
for the Internet Archive to release videos that have been uploaded.

You can always go back and edit the description of the video from a link
at the bottom left of the screen describing your video -- after you are logged
in to the Internet Archive. Phil missed seeing that link and added a public
comment to his video to add some extra information he forgot to include.

If you have ideas for some group video projects that VMUG members can
work on, you might bring them to the VMUG Multimedia special interest group
(SIG.) See the Multimedia SIG blog for further information.

http://web.mac.com/haly2k1/iWeb/Site/Blog/Blog.html

Are you curious to learn a bit more about Brewster Kahle, the visionary
who created the Internet Archive? Search for his name in the Internet Archive.
You can view a video of a speech he gave at the Library of Congress in December,
2004. (Scroll down about 5 items in the search results.)

If Brewster Kahle has given the world this immense gift, what's the most
appropriate way of thanking him? Use the gift.

[DDN] mention of DDN in the los angeles times

2006-03-07 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

there's a nice, brief mention of the digital divide network at the end of
this article in the los angeles times today. free software enthusiast lou
dolinar is the author of the article -- which originally appeared in the
newspaper titled newsday.

>From Newsday
Lou Dolinar:
Portable apps get a thumbs-up
March 5, 2006

Way back in 1981, I bought my first computer, an Osborne I "portable" that
tipped the scales at 26.2 pounds and had a 3.5-inch-wide monitor, a 4-megahertz
processor, and in the absence of a hard drive, a pair of 5 1/4-inch removable
floppy drives (snip)

Meanwhile, about that paradigm thing: Haller points out that outfits such as the
Digital Divide network (www.digital divide.net) are trying to spread computer
literacy worldwide, even as hoped-for $300 PCs still are out of range of much of
the world's population. "Why can't we have one or two computers configured
centrally, that everyone can use, and give everyone a thumb drive for $10?" he
asks.

[DDN] article - wi-fi deal in philly is done

2006-03-01 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community

this is some good news...

http://digg.com/technology/Philly_wi-fi_deal_is_done_

"Neff told Council members that the Internet service will be anywhere from 25
percent to 50 percent cheaper than private- sector competitors.

Part of the deal requires Earthlink to provide computers and training to 10,000
low-income families as part of an effort to bridge the so-called "digital
divide."

She said the entire program would be no cost to city taxpayers, though the city
loaned $750,000 to the nonprofit Wireless Philadelphia, the entity created by
the Street administration to oversee the WiFi plan."

Re: [DDN] My interview with NetSquared

2006-02-17 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi DDN community -

this interview with andy carvin has some excellent commentary in it.
kudos to marshall kirkpatrick (and andy) for assembling so many probing thoughts
in one interview.

i love the part of the interview when andy admits he's not a techie.

perhaps he's not a computer programmer, but he sure is strongly talented
with technology tools. the point is well made that there are ample opportunities
for people to be creative and advanced users of technology -- without being a
technical expert themselves.

it's the usage of the tools that matter.

[DDN] sarasota county, florida, computer refurbishing teacher

2006-02-17 Thread Phil Shapiro
 hi DDN community -

this well-written article about a southwest florida educator doesn't
mention the wonderful computer refurbishers email list run by jim lynch from
CompuMentor, the DDN community, TechSoup, CTCNet or any such resources.

journalists don't see their duty to connect the local to the national.
also, why should a journalist do extra research about such stuff? it's tough
enough trying to meet deadline.

is the deadline the problem? i see the deadline as the problem. and that
journalists/newspapers don't really care to place their news within context
other than the subject standing in front of their horse blinders.

we've got to expect more.

Article published Feb 13, 2006
Bridging the digital divide a PC at a time
Program helps needy students achieve with free home computers

By Markeshia Ricks

SARASOTA COUNTY -- Ron Zimmerman has learned to work fast when he has students
eagerly waiting to use the computer he's installing.

Earlier this week, Alta Vista Elementary School students Tiana and Yalexi Perez
couldn't contain themselves as he worked.

"Can we use it now?" 8-year-old Tiana asked. "I've got to get my math scores up
for FCAT."

It's exactly what Zimmerman wants to hear.

As the coordinator of a program that provides computers to students who can't
afford them, he's hoping to bridge the digital divide and close the student
achievement gap one computer at a time.

"Those kids that can afford computers are lucky because a computer is such a
dynamic learning tool," he said. "I would love to see every kid have one."

As a technology teacher at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus, Zimmerman found that
students continued to learn and retain more if they had computer access at home.
Those students who didn't often fell behind.

[DDN] search engine incentives - the skit

2006-02-15 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi DDN community -

both yahoo and msn recently announced that they are exploring financial
incentives to get people to use their search engines. that news spawned this
parody skit and song.

  http://searchengineincentives.blogspot.com/

note the way this parody shows up as one of the technorati links
adjacent to the web version of the washington post article. (click on the link
"Full List of Blogs.")

the way to get your blog entry to show up adjacent to a washington post
article is to "claim" your blog at technorati.com. (it's free to "claim" your
blog.)

i use a free sitemeter counter at the bottom of this web site to track
who is sending the most web traffic to this site --

the washington post? (probably not. old media is withering away)
macnn.com (perhaps -- if they mention the skit)
instapundit.com (a lot, if he decides to mention it)
scripting.com (a lot, if he decides to mention it)
boingboing.net (a lot, if they decide to mention it.)
digg.com (probably some. possibly a lot if the skit makes
it to the front page of digg.)
email forwarding -- you can never underestimate the grapevine effect

if you'd like to digg (i.e. vote your approval) of this skit,
you can do so at http://digg.com/users/pshapiro/submitted

you know, major corporations really ought to check with web satirists
before rolling out new initiatives. they would save themselves a lot of trouble
if they did. satirists would be only too happy to give them a thumbs up or
thumbs down -- to better guide the direction their corporation is going in. :-)

[DDN] digg.com at 130 million page views per day

2006-02-04 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi DDN community -

the community-edited tech news web site named digg.com is now getting 130
million page views per day. a new version of the web site is going to be
launched soon that will extend the scope of the news beyond tech news to any
kind of news. i predict it won't be too long before digg.com gets a billion page
views per day.

so if you submitted a story to digg.com and the story was dugg (i.e.
community voted) to the front page of digg.com, you would have a lot of folks
seeing that story. you might potentially have more than a million persons visit
the web site listed in the story -- whether that site is connected with your
work or not.

  see http://www.publish.com/article2/0,1895,1918172,00.asp
for further info on this.

if you'd like to keep track of digg's continued rise, use google alerts to
send you an alert once a day with links to news articles mentioning digg.
http://google.com/alerts

yes, digg.com's success will force old media (i.e. newspapers) to quickly
find ways of having more community partipication. if they don't, their
precipitous decline will continue.

[DDN] western union ends telegraph service

2006-02-02 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

western's union telegraph service ended this week -- after 145 years of
continuous use. a precursor to the modern internet, telegraph service allowed
rapid communication over long distances.

to help future historians understand the telegraph, i've written a short
reading passage covering most of what they need to know.

The Invention of the Telegraph

So like the telegraph was invented in 1844 by Samuel Morse so that he could IM
with his friends. So he would like telegraph things like, "What hath God
wrought. brb." His friends would telegraph back, "u r the gr8test!!
LOL" Samuel Morse would then telegraph back, "BCNU CUL8R GTR. Telegraph
rocks, IMHO." (Be seeing you. See you later. Got to run.)

Samuel Morse's parents used to limit the amount of time he could telegraph with
friends. He was only allowed to telegraph with them after he had finished his
homework.

On January 27, 2006, Western Union discontinued the telegraph service that they
had been offering for 145 years. The press release for this announcement said
simply: Telegraph service just ended, OMG. TTFN. TAFN. (Oh my gosh. Ta ta for
now. That's all for now.)

ZIRKEL Wireless zooms past other Internet service providers

By Alexis DeLaCruz

Sunday, January 29, 2006

OAK CREEK — Five years ago, Alan Belvo and his friend Sean Haskett got
sick of waiting for their slow dial-up Internet connection and began
researching what they could do about it. To remedy their frustrations with
their outdated Internet connection, they started their own company.

Now, Belvo and Haskett are expanding the high-speed Internet business,
ZIRKEL Wireless, to reach as far as Yampa. "The idea for us is to get as
many people out here in (South Routt) hooked up with high-speed as
possible," Belvo said. ZIRKEL Wireless this month installed three new
antenna sites in the county, two of which are in South Routt.

Belvo said one of the antenna sites is on the historic Oak Creek water
tower. Another site is about 30 miles away on a hillside outside of
Phippsburg. By adding the new sites, Belvo said he has been able to
"bridge the digital divide by bringing South Routt residents and
businesses affordable high-speed Internet."

[DDN] digg.com as a tool for technology access activists

2006-01-29 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

for those who might not know, the rapidly growing web site named digg.com
could end up being a very useful tool for those of us working on technology
access issues.

i'd like to keep track of those of us within the DDN community who have
registered on digg.com

if you have registered for an account there (it's free), thanks for
letting me know off-list.

i'll be writing an article about digg.com sometime soon -- and may also be
creating one or more screencasts about digg.com to help people learn how this
web site works.

[DDN] oakland county, michigan, free wireless pilot starts in march

2006-01-27 Thread Phil Shapiro

Pilot Oakland cities going wireless soon

By Catherine Kavanaugh
Daily Tribune Staff Writer

Computer users in seven cities will be able to unplug their equipment and still
access the Internet — for free — when Wireless Oakland comes to their towns with
a target start-up time in March, 2006.

In Royal Oak, the service first will be offered in the area bounded by Woodward
Avenue, I-696, I-75 and 12 Mile Road and then branch out to the rest of city,
according to Interim City Attorney David Gillam.

Royal Oak is one of seven pilot cities along with Troy, Madison Heights, Oak
Park, Birmingham, Pontiac and Wixom. Eventually, all 910 square miles of Oakland
County will go wireless.

[DDN] article - Paper lets readers choose front page stories

2006-01-25 Thread Phil Shapiro

Paper lets readers choose front page stories

Wisconsin's second-largest newspaper is letting readers help decide what to put
on the front page.

In an experiment designed to boost reader interest, the Wisconsin State Journal
allows readers to go on its website every weekday from 11am to 4pm and vote for
their favourite out of five story ideas.

Barring late-breaking news, the winning story typically will appear on Page 1
the next day.

(my take -- this is a step in the right direction, but not a very deep step. in
some ways a superficial step.)

[DDN] article - when granny got on lsd

2006-01-22 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

here's an article i wrote that explains about getting a mac os 9 computer to
work with verizon's dsl service. i worry about other families that have the
need to do this, but don't have the technical expertise. we must create social
institutions so that people are not on their own in getting these things done.

as you'll see, i wrote this article tongue-in-cheek, but i tried to include
as much practical info as i could.

[DDN] article - Church partnership provides gift of computers

2006-01-22 Thread Phil Shapiro

Article from the Port Arthur News, Port Arthur, Texas.

Church partnership provides gift of computers

By Elisabeth Enloe -The News staff writer

Kendal Morris has three older brothers at home and was tired of fighting for her
share of time on the family computer.

Enough was enough and it was time she had a computer of her own.

So when the 11-year-old Stephen F. Austin Middle School student first heard
about the St. Paul United Methodist Church Computer Program, an opportunity for
her to “earn” a computer through community service and a commitment to her
education, she couldn't wait to get home and tell her mother about it.

“When she first came home and told me about it I thought she was mistaken,”
Sherri Morris, a 46-year-old elementary school teacher, said. “But she was
really persistent and it was something she has wanted for a really long time.”

Her persistence included digging through the trash after her application
materials were thrown out alongside Hurricane Rita debris.

The Morris' were among more than 30 families gathered at St. Paul United
Methodist Church on Texas Avenue Saturday to take a computer orientation class
and then pick up a computer of their own to take home.

[DDN] imovie 2 books available for .25 cents on amazon.com

2006-01-20 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi DDN community -

i'm giving some advice and guidance to a youth media project in takoma park,
maryland. this project has a volunteer from maryland public television who
teaching the youth video production.

this volunteer knows a lot about professional video production using AVID.
i need him to get up to speed quickly on apple's imovie software -- both the
older version (imovie 2) and the newer version (imovie hd.)

i couldn't find any books about imovie 2 in local public libraries, so i
went looking on amazon.com

sure enough, there are lots of individuals and vendors selling copies of
imovie 2 books. i bought the book "imovie2: the missing manual" for 25 cents --
and $3.50 shipping.

the price for buying this book is less than the late fees i would incur
if i signed the book out of a library.
