[DDN] video -- sergey brin at the univ. of california
hi DDN community - this weekend you have a choice of watching the standard fare on television, or watching a video of sergey brin (co-founder of google) talking about the democratizing effects of technology -- and other topics. see the google video file at http://tinyurl.com/gewa7 i love how computer science professor dr. marti hearst introduces sergey brin: "today we are lucky enough to have a visiting speaker, sergey brin, from google. some of you might have even heard of google." and i love the way sergey brin indicates to this class of computer science students that their questions are more important than anything he has to say. sergey brin credits his creativity and sense of wonder from the montessori school he attended that's close to where i work in takoma park, maryland. (he attended paint branch montessori school, in adelphi, maryland, from kindergarten to 5th grade.) here's something to wonder about. in what ways are you increasing the sense of wonder of people in your community? how often have you told someone this month that, "curiosity is its own reward?" how often do you support the creativity of others you encouter each day? is it possible to support other people's creativity without much work, effort, or expense? if wisdom begins with wonder, are we wondering enough? what are the fruits of wondering? what can we learn about wondering from children? - phil -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://www.digitaldivide.net/blog/pshapiro http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom begins with wonder." - Socrates ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

hi DDN community - i'm working on a little video project which shares multiple points of views about warren buffet's large donation to the gates foundation. i'll be finished with this video project in a week or two, but some of you might enjoy seeing the result so far. i've uploaded the work-in-progress quicktime to the internet archive at http://tinyurl.com/hjgro you'll need a G4 Mac (or better) and quicktime 7 to view this video. this video ought to play well on most pentium 3 and pentium 4 windows computers -- as well as linux computers. apologies to the G3 mac users that i needed to leave behind on this project. this video also plays well on linux, using a program named mplayer. are you interested in creating some of your own videos like this? i've posted some screencasts explaining the steps at http://www.rosetimes.com click on the link "making rosetimes" at the top right of this web site. when you reach the internet archive (http://www.archive.org), my three how-to quicktimes can be found on the left side of the screen. those of you on this list involved with youth and multimedia, this is the kind of multimedia project that youth might enjoy working on. the dramatic angle is something youth might find creatively engaging. - phil -- Phil Shapiro pshapiro http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://philsrssfeed.blogspot.com "Where there is storytelling there are relationships. [DDN] towards musical inclusion
hi DDN community - i recently came across a neat new musical instrument, the "strumstick," which is a simplified guitar with just 3 strings. this instrument, invented by a very creative person in new jersey, sounds a bit like a banjo and a bit like a hammered dulcimer. it's very easy to play and will bring musical inclusion to many more people. i'm using youtube to help people learn about this instrument and i'm sending fan email to the inventor today to let him know how much i appreciate his invention. the videos i've uploaded to youtube are at Ode to Joy (Strumstick version) http://youtube.com/watch?v=x2SxiORP0Ig Joy to the World (Strumstick version) http://youtube.com/watch?v=uAPA1CxYlBg both of these melodies are in the public domain. in the coming weeks i'll be uploading more strumstick videos to youtube. you'll be able to find them by searching youtube for the word strumstick. - phil btw, here in the washington dc-area i'm also going to be giving strumstick lessons in people's homes. i paid $150 for my "Grand Strumstick" and i'll be able to recoup the cost fairly quickly by teaching a few lessons. i'm using craigslist and youtube to help me find strumstick (and guitar) students. i'll be volunteering in some DC-area shelters to help people learn the strumstick, too. i've been teaching the strumstick to the kids of some friends of mine and they loved playing it. -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://philsrssfeed.blogspot.com http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates "Learning happens through gentleness." ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

I started very early in order to be able to catch Hilton Theunissen in South Africa, who has led the tuXlab project to install Linux thin-client in 200 schools. Then late in the day Mike Huffman and Laura Taylor provided insight into the Indiana Affordable Classroom Computers for Every Secondary Student (ACCESS) program. (To download the mp3 or ogg files, go to http://www.K12OpenSource.com/Interviews.) These are both fascinating interviews, and along with the interview with the folks from Atlanta Public Schools last week, they are confirming a pattern that deserve some real exploration: high-priced, high-maintenance computers have led to relatively little actual student time in front of them (35 minutes a week per student in the case of Indiana, at a cost of $100 million a year!); low-cost computer solutions provide significantly more actual time in front of computers for students, and the result is dramatic engagement by students and teachers, and significant academic success (some measured and some expected). This is interesting to me, since I've lately been very aware that while the Windows, Linux, and Mac folks fight the battle of which OS is best, there is still a more fundamental and hotly-debated question with regard to computers in education: do they actually help students do better for all the money that is spent on them? What Atlanta and Indiana seem to show is that because it has been so costly to have computers in schools, they haven't been truly available enough for teachers or students to integrate their use into the curriculum. But in programs that are dedicated to cost-effectively getting the computers into the classrooms in sufficient quantity to impact education, the results are significant and exciting. And the "cost effective" part belongs to Linux and Open Source... This Thursday night (August 17), it's time to hear from "our favorite Moodler," Michelle Moore from remote-Learner.net. The one-hour interview will be broadcast live at 5:00 pm PDT / 8:00 pm EDT, and will also be available afterwards in recorded form. RE: [DDN] youtube web site serving 100 million videos per day
Quoting John Thompson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > What are the implications of Web 2.0, such as the YouTube site, on the > digital divide? hi john - thanks for asking. the rise of sites such as youtube are generally a good sign for greater community participation in media production. community video on the web follows in the footsteps of the blogging and podcasting movements. i follow news in the area of participatory media on the http://unmediated.org web site. anyone can submit news items to unmediated, too. if youtube is currently at 100 million videos viewed per day, how long will it take to reach the 1 billion videos viewed per day level? perhaps just another year. meanwhile, the rise of video on the web brings hope to the portability of learning, when it will be common for teachers to access educational videos from the web to distribute to their students. some of those students will view those videos on donated computers. some might use portable video viewing devices. it's hard to know where we'll end up with this, but it looks like we're heading in the right direction. - phil > > John T. hi Digital Divide Network community - i've uploaded to the web a rosetime (i.e. video interview) with DDN member siobhan champ-blackwell, from omaha, nebraska. siobhan is one of the most active members on the DDN list. this is an opportunity to meet her in person. i've created a link to her rosetime at http://rosetimes.com you can learn more about siobhan at her DDN profile http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/siobhanchamp-blackwell the above-mentioned interview is best viewed with a high speed internet connection. i did post a smaller file -- with a static graphics -- to give dial-up users a taste of what rosetimes are about. these quicktime videos are best viewed with firefox, safari, opera or camino web browsers. you might need to download quicktime (free) from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download i've tested these rosetimes on linux systems and they play fine using mplayer on a fedora core 4 box. these video files also play fine on windows computers. - phil btw, on the right side of the rosetimes.com web site i've posted a link to some quicktime files explaining how anyone can create rosetimes using imovie and quicktime pro. i've also posted info on the kind of equipment needed to create rosetimes. i should point out that you don't even need a digital camcorder to create a good looking/sounding rosetime. as long as your camcorder has a microphone input jack, you have the tools need to create a rosetime. to show the potential of analog-shot video, here's some video i shot a couple years ago with a donated sony 8 mm camcorder. http://www.archive.org/details/juanwilliamsonmarshall if you shoot on analog video format, you do need to convert it to digital form to create a rosetime. that's not all that difficult these days. many digital camcorders can perform that function. perhaps you have a friend who owns a digital camcorder that you can use for the occasional video conversion. if there's anyone on this list who'd like to try creating a rosetime, kindly send me an email off-list with the subject: creating a rosetime -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://philsrssfeed.blogspot.com http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates "Learning happens through gentleness." ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

[DDN] registering for a digg account
hi Digital Divide Network community - the community-controlled tech news web site named digg.com is now receiving 9 million site visits per day. when news of the DDN community reaching its 10,000 registered member comes out, we have the power within our community to propel that news to the front page of digg. (it only takes about 50 diggs (i.e. votes of approval) within 24 hours for a submitted story to rise to the front page of digg.) if you don't yet have a digg.com account yet, thanks for registering for one today. your mouse click can propel our community forward. if news about the DDN community reaches the front page of digg, then it would be more likely that Wired magazine (or somesuch) might want to cover the Digital Divide Network in an article. that would be a needed (and important) step forward for the movement. it would also be the catalyst in moving our community from 10,000 members to 100,000 members. as my high school math teacher used to say with a wink when he handed out exams, "remember, there is always strength in numbers." so true. - phil -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://philsrssfeed.blogspot.com http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates "Learning happens through gentleness." ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

[DDN] rosetimes -- online video interviews
hi Digital Divide Network community - the summer of 2004 saw the invention of podcasts, so i thought it might be fun to invent something for the summer of 2006. i'm a big fan of the charlie rose interview show on public television (here in the united states) and have been wondering if there is a way that anyone could interview anyone on the internet -- with crystal clear audio and video. "rosetimes" are video interviews that take place over the internet with a camcorder at each side. the resulting pristine videos can then be merged using apple's quicktime pro -- and hosted for free on the internet archive. (http://www.archive.org) unlike youtube.com and other recent video upstarts, the internet archive doesn't place a limit on the duration of the videos you upload. here are two sample rosetimes i've created to show what a rosetime looks like. one of these is a short interview with myself and the other is a book review where i appear in two videos on screen offering different points of view about the book. http://www.writersforliteracy.org/rosetimesselfinterview6.mov http://www.writersforliteracy.org/braillebookreview.mov these are not typical rosetimes. a typical rosetime would have two (or more) people talking to each other either in interview or discussion. the above two rostimes run well on linux, macintosh, and windows. (i tested these on a fedora core 4 box, running mplayer, at the public library where i work.) i designed the rosetimes above so that they run well on older computers, too, so you can view them on G3 macs running mac os 9. older macs can also be used for creating rosetimes. you might be able to run these on pentium 2 computers. the processing power needed to view these is not all that large. a pentium 2 with 266 MHz processor could probably do the trick. (thanks in advance to anyone on this list who can report back to the list about that.) i'll be releasing for free the instructions for making rosetimes. just wanted to give people on this list a heads up. a more formal announcement about rosetimes will be happening towards the end of june (or early july), after i've assembled a couple more actual rosetimes. you can likely create rosetimes on windows computers. i haven't tried yet. i'll be sharing info about that after i've given that a try. naturally, i'm very interested in the creation of rosetimes on linux systems. i'm hoping that rosetimes will be another tool that will bring greater participation in the marketplace of ideas. there are many excellent ideas out there that never see the light of day. i'm hoping that rosetimes will show those ideas the light of day, letting us all move forward with work that needs to get done. - phil if you know someone who ought to be on this email list, thanks for inviting them onto the list. we need their ideas, their energy, their momentum to build a more participatory society. people can easily join this email list when the register on the Digital Divide Network web site. -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://philsrssfeed.blogspot.com http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates "Learning happens through gentleness." ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

hi Digital Divide Network community - the editor in chief of computerworld magazine, don tennant, has a few choice words about microsoft's continued use of intimidation tactics. see http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=86 or http://tinyurl.com/oqull i attended both of the conferences that ralph nader organized regarding microsoft's anticompetitive practices, here in washington dc in the late 1990's. intimidation was the word used over and over again by people who were called to speak. a reporter from a newspaper in wisconsin testified that when she wrote an article that was not favorable to microsoft, the next day bill gates placed a phone call to the editorial board of the newspaper telling them to - "take care of this matter." she said in no other instance has a company ever called that newspaper's editorial board to threaten them. i prefer we as a community not launch into a long message thread regarding microsoft. those discussions have been hash and rehashed. we do need to focus our brainwidth on constructive work we can be doing in our communities. those of us working on access issues are naturally concerned when a company uses tactics to unfairly maintain its market share. if you want to learn more about microsoft's historical practices, ask around in geek circles you move in what views and perspectives people might have. you can learn a lot by listening. - phil shapiro for context on microsoft, there's probably no better book than Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire. http://tinyurl.com/fxq5c in that book you'll find out about the slogan "DOS ain't done until Lotus won't run" and other instructive matters regarding microsoft practices. this book was written by two Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporters. generally speaking, reporters tend to tell the truth. they become quickly former-reporters if they do anything else. -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://philsrssfeed.blogspot.com http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates "Learning happens through gentleness." ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

[DDN] digital camcorder donation
hi Digital Divide Network community - some happy news to share. a digital camcorder has been donated to the DDN community for us to use in whatever way we please. this camcorder is a canon zr500. it comes with a lavalier (clip on) microphone. one possible use of this camcorder might be for interviews between DDN community members. such interviews could be conducted over the internet using the free gizmo internet phone service. with both people in the interview capturing their own video and audio, internet latencies become a non-issue. the two video files can be merged into a single quicktime file using quicktime pro (or final cut.) this kind of interview conducted over the internet has become commonly known as a rosetime, in honor of charlie rose, who conducts a popular interview program on public television, here in the united states. rosetimes can be uploaded for free to the internet archive, which provides free, permanent web hosting. (http://www.archive.org) here within the DDN community there is a treasure trove of interesting stories from members in our community. we're not going to wait around for anyone else to tell these stories. we're going to tell them ourselves. sorry i don't have some rosetimes to share with you today, but i hope to have a couple uploaded before the Beyond Broadcast conference in cambridge, mass., later this month. the rosetime genre owes its existence to the DDN community. some of the people involved in bringing this genre to life include - Daniel Bassill http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/dbassill1 Bonnie Bracey Sutton http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/bbracey Taran Rampersad http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/Taran Felicia Sullivan http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/Felicia Rich Jaeggi http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/rjaeggi Father Jeff Putthoff http://www.hopeworks.org Morgan Sulley http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/memeshift Nettrice Gaskins http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/Nettrice Daniell Krawcyzk http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/daniell and of course, cedar pruitt and andy carvin, played an important role, too. some folks outside the DDN community who played a role in bringing rosetimes to life include - kenyatta cheese ryanne hodson jay dedman michael verdi steve garfield j.d. lasica dan gillmor hal cauthen brewster kahle for those of you who are new to the Digital Divide Network, here is a quick overview of some of the folks you might see in rosetimes in the coming months. http://www.his.com/~pshapiro/ddnprofiles.html if you're interested in appearing in a rosetime (or would like to volunteer time to conduct some), thanks for sending me an email with the word rosetime in the subject line. i'll be sending some follow-up emails explaining the process for creating rosetimes using imovie and quicktime pro. [DDN] apple computer at 30 -- thinking back on the beginning
hi DDN community - the washington post asked me for a quote about apple's 30th birthday, coming up this saturday, april 1. they may or may not end up using the quote. just wanted to share it here, for what it's worth. Apple Computer was founded by two idealistic people yearning to bring computing out of big corporations and big government into the hands of ordinary people. That spirit of popular empowerment is reawakened with the blogging and podcasting phenomenon -- and with desktop video and music production, a tidal wave of creativity has been unleashed. When a musician can publish their music online for $15 -- without any royalties being received by middlemen, a great step forward in civilization has occurred. (i.e. http://tunecore.com) The dream, started so long ago, is materializing in ways undreamt of. what i didn't say in the above quote is that my time is being spent more and more with linux and other free software projects. i choose to use tools that will bring the greatest empowerment to myself and my community. can these two dreams co-exist? they can, for me. will there be a place for microsoft in the future of computing? there might be. or there might not be. it depends on whether the company is able to reinvent itself. - phil -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://digg.com/users/pshapiro/submitted http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates "Learning happens through gentleness." ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

[DDN] Tip About Using the Internet Archive's Free Web Hosting
hi DDN community members - here's a short news item i wrote for the monthly news of the virginia macintosh users group, a computer club i belong to here in the washington dc-area. http://www.vmug.org thought it might be of interest. - phil Tip About Using the Internet Archive's Free Web Hosting Do you have some videos you've created that you'd like to make available for the world to see? Do you own all the rights to the video? (i.e. Are the music and images in the video not copyright by someone else?) Then the free web hosting on the Internet Archive is a good choice. http://www.archive.org As an example, here is a 52-minute (400 megabyte) QuickTime file that VMUG member Phil Shapiro recently uploaded to the Internet Archive. To view this video, click on the word QuickTime in blue on the left of your screen. http://www.archive.org/details/multimediastorytelling QuickTimes are best viewed using Safari or Firefox. Internet Explorer sometimes makes you wait for the QuickTime to completely transfer before you can start watching it. Phil used Cyberduck to do the uploading. http://cyberduck.ch/ Cyberduck is a free download. You can make a donation to the creators of Cyberduck if you find the program useful. Using a cable modem, this 52-minute video took about 3 hours to upload to the Internet Archive. If you have Verizon's fiber optic service, you could probably upload this video in about an hour (or less.) Using a dual-processor G5 PowerMac, this video took about 40 minutes to export from iMovie, using Share on the File menu. All this is to say that it's entirely possible to shoot a video, edit it and upload it to the Internet Archive all on the same day. It takes about a day for the Internet Archive to release videos that have been uploaded. You can always go back and edit the description of the video from a link at the bottom left of the screen describing your video -- after you are logged in to the Internet Archive. Phil missed seeing that link and added a public comment to his video to add some extra information he forgot to include. If you have ideas for some group video projects that VMUG members can work on, you might bring them to the VMUG Multimedia special interest group (SIG.) See the Multimedia SIG blog for further information. http://web.mac.com/haly2k1/iWeb/Site/Blog/Blog.html Are you curious to learn a bit more about Brewster Kahle, the visionary who created the Internet Archive? Search for his name in the Internet Archive. You can view a video of a speech he gave at the Library of Congress in December, 2004. (Scroll down about 5 items in the search results.) "Why can't we have one or two computers configured centrally, that everyone can use, and give everyone a thumb drive for $10?" he asks. hi DDN community - this well-written article about a southwest florida educator doesn't mention the wonderful computer refurbishers email list run by jim lynch from CompuMentor, the DDN community, TechSoup, CTCNet or any such resources. journalists don't see their duty to connect the local to the national. also, why should a journalist do extra research about such stuff? it's tough enough trying to meet deadline. is the deadline the problem? i see the deadline as the problem. and that journalists/newspapers don't really care to place their news within context other than the subject standing in front of their horse blinders. we've got to expect more. - phil Article published Feb 13, 2006 Bridging the digital divide a PC at a time Program helps needy students achieve with free home computers By Markeshia Ricks SARASOTA COUNTY -- Ron Zimmerman has learned to work fast when he has students eagerly waiting to use the computer he's installing. Earlier this week, Alta Vista Elementary School students Tiana and Yalexi Perez couldn't contain themselves as he worked. "Can we use it now?" 8-year-old Tiana asked. "I've got to get my math scores up for FCAT." It's exactly what Zimmerman wants to hear. As the coordinator of a program that provides computers to students who can't afford them, he's hoping to bridge the digital divide and close the student achievement gap one computer at a time. "Those kids that can afford computers are lucky because a computer is such a dynamic learning tool," he said. "I would love to see every kid have one." [DDN] western union ends telegraph service
hi DDN community - western's union telegraph service ended this week -- after 145 years of continuous use. a precursor to the modern internet, telegraph service allowed rapid communication over long distances. to help future historians understand the telegraph, i've written a short reading passage covering most of what they need to know. The Invention of the Telegraph So like the telegraph was invented in 1844 by Samuel Morse so that he could IM with his friends. So he would like telegraph things like, "What hath God wrought. brb." His friends would telegraph back, "u r the gr8test!! LOL" Samuel Morse would then telegraph back, "BCNU CUL8R GTR. Telegraph rocks, IMHO." (Be seeing you. See you later. Got to run.) Samuel Morse's parents used to limit the amount of time he could telegraph with friends. He was only allowed to telegraph with them after he had finished his homework. On January 27, 2006, Western Union discontinued the telegraph service that they had been offering for 145 years. The press release for this announcement said simply: Telegraph service just ended, OMG. TTFN. TAFN. (Oh my gosh. Ta ta for now. That's all for now.) [DDN] wireless internet success in rural colorado
hi DDN community - this is a nice tale of two people who took matters into their own hands to bring high-speed wireless internet to their rural town in colorado. other rural communities can be heartened by this kind of success. - phil Residents hook up to high speed ZIRKEL Wireless zooms past other Internet service providers By Alexis DeLaCruz Sunday, January 29, 2006 OAK CREEK Five years ago, Alan Belvo and his friend Sean Haskett got sick of waiting for their slow dial-up Internet connection and began researching what they could do about it. To remedy their frustrations with their outdated Internet connection, they started their own company. Now, Belvo and Haskett are expanding the high-speed Internet business, ZIRKEL Wireless, to reach as far as Yampa. "The idea for us is to get as many people out here in (South Routt) hooked up with high-speed as possible," Belvo said. ZIRKEL Wireless this month installed three new antenna sites in the county, two of which are in South Routt. Belvo said one of the antenna sites is on the historic Oak Creek water tower. Another site is about 30 miles away on a hillside outside of Phippsburg. By adding the new sites, Belvo said he has been able to "bridge the digital divide by bringing South Routt residents and businesses affordable high-speed Internet." [DDN] article - Paper lets readers choose front page stories
Paper lets readers choose front page stories Wisconsin's second-largest newspaper is letting readers help decide what to put on the front page. In an experiment designed to boost reader interest, the Wisconsin State Journal allows readers to go on its website every weekday from 11am to 4pm and vote for their favourite out of five story ideas. Barring late-breaking news, the winning story typically will appear on Page 1 the next day. hi DDN community - here's an article i wrote that explains about getting a mac os 9 computer to work with verizon's dsl service. i worry about other families that have the need to do this, but don't have the technical expertise. we must create social institutions so that people are not on their own in getting these things done. as you'll see, i wrote this article tongue-in-cheek, but i tried to include as much practical info as i could. see http://digg.com/users/pshapiro/submitted - phil -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://www.digitaldivide.net/blog/pshapiro http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.
[DDN] article - Church partnership provides gift of computers
Article from the Port Arthur News, Port Arthur, Texas. Church partnership provides gift of computers By Elisabeth Enloe -The News staff writer Kendal Morris has three older brothers at home and was tired of fighting for her share of time on the family computer. Enough was enough and it was time she had a computer of her own. So when the 11-year-old Stephen F. Austin Middle School student first heard about the St. Paul United Methodist Church Computer Program, an opportunity for her to earn a computer through community service and a commitment to her education, she couldn't wait to get home and tell her mother about it. When she first came home and told me about it I thought she was mistaken, Sherri Morris, a 46-year-old elementary school teacher, said. But she was really persistent and it was something she has wanted for a really long time. Her persistence included digging through the trash after her application materials were thrown out alongside Hurricane Rita debris. The Morris' were among more than 30 families gathered at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Texas Avenue Saturday to take a computer orientation class and then pick up a computer of their own to take home. [DDN] imovie 2 books available for .25 cents on amazon.com
hi DDN community - i'm giving some advice and guidance to a youth media project in takoma park, maryland. this project has a volunteer from maryland public television who teaching the youth video production. this volunteer knows a lot about professional video production using AVID. i need him to get up to speed quickly on apple's imovie software -- both the older version (imovie 2) and the newer version (imovie hd.) i couldn't find any books about imovie 2 in local public libraries, so i went looking on amazon.com sure enough, there are lots of individuals and vendors selling copies of imovie 2 books. i bought the book "imovie2: the missing manual" for 25 cents -- and $3.50 shipping. the price for buying this book is less than the late fees i would incur if i signed the book out of a library. - phil -- Phil Shapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/pshapiro http://www.digitaldivide.net/blog/pshapiro http://www.his.com/pshapiro/stories.menu.html "Wisdom starts with wonder." - Socrates ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.
