Re: [digitalradio] ARRL forwarding tagged as spam.

2005-10-05 Thread Dean Gibson AE7Q

Assuming that spam filtering is automatically based on content
is very naive;  accusing someone of trying to restrict what you read
based on that assumption is silly.

I run my own mail server that has one of the most restrictive mail
filters on the planet, and not one iota of the filters is based on
content (except that no executables are allowed as raw attachments).
Such filters are based on protocol violations that spammers never care
about, but serious system administrators do.  As a result (for
example), my mail filters reject sales material from Sun Microsystems
(until I added the sales group's mail server to the white list), while
technical eMail from the technical side of the house gets through just
fine.  Does my filter occasionally reject eMail I want?  Certainly, but
that's due to the inept mail administrators at the sending company.  I
just whitelist such companies (usually my customers) and move on.

Now, it's true that some spam filters use content to make a decision,
but assuming that the ARRL uses such a filter may be incorrect.  Most
spam filters run at the mail server level do NOT filter on content, and
those that DO filter on content, are filtering more on historical
patterns of patently criminal behavior than innocent content.  If you
want to receive eMail from criminal organizations, that's your
business, but I think the ARRL is correct in assuming that most
amateurs don't.  After all, the service IS optional !!!

Assuming that those who are most against spam don't care about USPS
junk mail is also completely erroneous.

You are right about Microsoft, but that seems more like an off-topic
rant (as does the rest of your message).  Change eMail providers and
move on.

Sincerely, Dean

Since I am a "left-winger",  a "freethinker",  an avowed and

Since the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" address is a simple forwarding
service, it
is doubtful there will be any opportunity for me to "tune" the filters
applied to my inbound mail.  My "GMail" account, to which your
forwarding service is directed, provides those filters that are
tuneable to my specific needs.   On the rare occasions when I
do use "POP" mail, I have my own filters installed locally.  And,
they all function quite well.  Thank you!

I have no need for you, or anyone else, to monitor the kind of mail I
receive, or its source ... to decide what is fit for me to read and
what is not.  I am an adult ... 63 years old.  I am more
offended by your efforts to shelter me and shield me from what YOU deem
to be an offensive message,  than I am by any explicit language or
political invective that message may contain.  I am more offended
by your efforts to shield me from "viagra" and "boob job" ads, than I
am by their content.  I am more offended by your effort to shield
me from the Nigerian "free money" offers, than I am by the idiot who
sent me the message.   (In fact, these money offers give me
more of a hard-on than the Viagra! :-)  I can do all this for
myself.  I have a "delete" key.  Thank you ... but, again,
NO!  Thank you!

Why is it that people will yell so loudly over what they perceive to be
"SPAM" in their email, and then walk 1/2 mile to their RFD postal
mailbox,  carry home an arm load of "Junk Mail" which they toss in
the trash ... without a whimper ... when the expense and effort
entailed in its delivery is exponentially greater than that expended on
SPAM?

As to virus protections:

Much of this problem is engendered by organizations, such as the
ARRL,  when they actively promote the Micro$oft computing
monoculture by proclaiming in their advertisements for CD's, etc., that
"Windows 98, or better is required" ... even when said CD contains
nothing more than text or ".pdf" files,  all easily readable with
"Open Source" systems such as Linux and BSD.  The ARRL could make
a tremendous contribution to both the Ham Radio AND computing
communities by promoting Open Source systems  with the same effort
and energy they give to promoting the Micro$oft monolith.  Time
for HAMs (at very least) to get off the M$ tit!

Rick,

I've only had a few QSO's with Chip, but I think it
will find a niche. One major
obstacle is the polar ionosphere and
Chip seeems to do as well as MFSK and Olivia in
that respect.

Chip128 is especially good through Moe
Wheatley's canned simulation for high-latitude conditions, but I guess there's no substitute for real-world testing.

I suppose the selective fading and QRN found on 80
meters shows that MFSK, Olivia has an edge over Chip, but there may be other
scenarios where Chip has an edge -- only time will tell.

Compared to PSK31, Throb and MT63, Chip certainly
does a better job through a simulated polar ionosphere.

[digitalradio] Re Stream

2005-10-05 Thread Bernard Spencer

Hello Nino,

I use your Stream V.1.1 program, which is nice.

Because the MFSK16 mode in general is not always easy to tune, I think it
would help stations receiving me if my Idle Tone at the beginning of each
transmission was a bit longer than the 1 second default. Perhaps two or
three seconds long to give the other guy more time to click on to it.

I believe it needs a password to alter the setting Could you please send
it to me so that I can change it?

Incidentally, congratulations on your CHIP64 Program It has many nice
features, and everyone is trying it out !

Many Thanks
