[digitalradio] Taste the ALE On The Air (13-23 October 2006) HF Automatic Link Establishment

2006-09-11 Thread expeditionradio
ALE On-The-Air Week "AOTAW 2006"
Starts: 0001 UTC Friday 13 OCTOBER (13/10/06)
Ends: 1159 UTC Monday 23 OCTOBER (23/10/06)
10 Days of worldwide Amateur Radio ALE activity...
More information: http://hflink.com

HFLINK is sponsoring a new International Amateur Radio event called:
ALE On The Air Week (AOTAW 2006).
All ham radio operators worldwide are invited to participate in
10 days of amateur radio HF-ALE Automatic Link Establishment
and HF Selcall activity. AOTAW is an open operating event to
explore ALE communications and equipment. The experience
gained by participation is also useful for HF emergency and disaster
relief communications.

There are now many hundreds of hams worldwide with ALE stations.
The AOTAW gives operators a chance to exercise ALE transceivers,
antennas, software, systems, and operating procedures.

ALE Operator Certificate
=
HFLINK issues a unique ALE Operator Certificate to operators who
participate in AOTAW. To qualify for an ALE Operator Certificate, the
operator must initiate and complete at least 5 QSOs through Automatic
Link Establishment with other ALE operators. The ALE link must then be
followed by a communication either by voice or texting. Additional
certificate endorsement is issued by HFLINK for operators who link and
QSO with 25 ALE stations or more. Logs: see HFLINK.COM website for
details: http://hflink.com

About AOTAW
=
AOTAW is not a contest. All operators are reminded to be courteous
and operate within the recognised Amateur Radio ALE channels and
standards.

AOTAW provides a way for more operators to gain valuable practical
knowledge and expertise in the operation of an Amateur Radio ALE
station. Amateur operators who use ALE for government and
non-governmental organisations may be especially interested in
participation, for this is a chance to explore the various operational
aspects of ALE that may not be utilised otherwise. The 10 days of
AOTAW enables operators to participate as they can, for any amount of
time in the event, and to experience ALE operation under various
ionospheric propagation conditions.

ABOUT HFLINK
==
HFLINK is an international resource: for radio operators using ALE
Automatic Link Establishment and Selcall Selective Calling; for the
development of communications for organisations, Emergency / Relief
networks; and for the development of ALE operating methods applicable
to Amateur Radio Service. HFLINK is the Frequency and Address
Coordination group for Amateur Radio ALE and Selective Calling.

HFLINK Website: http://hflink.com

What is ALE?
==
ALE is the humorous acronym for the lofty-sounding Automatic Link
Establishment. With the capability to call up a specific station, a
group of stations, a net... or just CQ, ALE is a versatile system for
connecting operators for voice, data, text, instant messaging, or
image QSOs. A radio operator initiating a call, can within minutes
have the ALE automatically pick a frequency that has a good
propagation path. It signals the operators on both ends, so they can
begin communicating with each other immediately. In this respect, it
can eliminate the longstanding need for repetitive calling on
pre-determined time schedules and monitoring static on HF. It is a
great tool for finding optimum propagation between stations in
real-time, while avoiding guesswork, beacon listening, and complicated
HF prediction charts altogether. These days, ALE is most commonly used
for hooking up operators for voice QSOs on SSB, but there are many
other useful features, such as the popular short text messages.

ALE in Ham Radio
=
For the past 5 years, a group of Amateur Radio operators has joined
together to use and develop ALE methods for ham radio. The number of
hams has grown from just a handful active in 2001, to about a thousand
today. Some are following the traditional ham curiosity to explore
interesting aspects of communications; others are developing
dependable HF nets, or just using it to keep in touch with a circle of
ham friends. The need to call up emergency nets or inter-operability
and liason with government HF systems has led many hams to adopt a
government ALE standard, called FED-1045 or MIL-STD 188-141. This
standard caught on slowly in the ham community, initiated by a few
operators with limited government surplus gear and some with expensive
commercial equipment having embedded ALE or hardware controllers. Now,
with a ham HF transceiver, a computer as the controller, and an
appropriate antenna system, hams can harness the power of ALE.

How ALE Works
==
Each ham radio ALE station uses the operator's callsign as an address
in the ALE controller. When not actively in a QSO with another station,
each HF SSB transceiver constantly scans through a list of
frequencies, listening for its callsign. To reach a specific station,
the caller simply enters the callsign just like dialing a phone
number. The ALE control

2006-09-11 Thread KV9U
Just so you know, that many of us don't drive Cadillacs or even Buicks.
In fact, my wife drives a used pickup truck with over 100,000 miles on
it, but it is a 4 wheel drive extended cab she wanted for the farming
operation. I drive a Chevrolet Cavalier, which is a step up from what I
used to drive (Chevette). Many years ago my wife and I both drove VW
Beetles, (hers was that dreadful jeep looking version called "The
Thing"). She had a VW squareback before that. Our experience with VW was
that they had lots of design problems, were extremely expensive to
repair, and the purchase prices also got way too high to justify.

I often wonder if I would go through the work of getting a ham license
if I had been born in 1985 instead of 1945. Other than my continued
interest in emergency communications, most everything else can be done
with modern technology and computers fill in the rest of playing around
with technology for a reasonable price.

I have computer friends who keep asking me for some way to help them set
up a community network that will work for messaging each other and also
work even if the internet fails. They just are not willing to put in the
minimal amount of effort to take one of my ham classes. Otherwise, they
could use MURS for local neighbor to neighbor contact due to the
allowance of large antennas and 2 watts on a frequency close to 2
meters. But I don't think they can use digital for that. A mesh network
on 2.4 perhaps?

Re: [digitalradio] Re: ARQ sound card modes

2006-09-11 Thread KV9U
Joel,

Amateur radio is changing quite a bit from my 40+ year perspective.
Just under half of all U.S. hams are Technician class and many have no
interest in upgrading to an HF license. But the main reason that hams
don't buy a $300 TNC is because they don't have to buy one.

Contrary to the absurd comments you hear about hams being cheap, the
fact is that many of us will spend fairly sizable amounts of money over
the long term. Some spend amazingly large sums. If digital modes
required a $300 TNC, many of us would have them. But such equipment is
not needed for most digital operating.

The older hardware is not even as good as much of the software now. The
only exception being Pactor II and III.

This past weekend, I was at our "local," but very small swapmeet. I
think you can get some idea of where hams are at in their interests and
what is important to them from watching what they buy or don't buy.

Including me, there were 4 indoor and two outdoor sellers. One guy had
R/C cars and some old movie videos at the table on one side of me.
Another had some tubes and a few ham related items and he came from
about 100 miles away and makes the rounds of swapmeets. Then the guy to
the other side of me comes every year with the same very old test
equipment that no one wants to buy. He did have a AEA CP-1 which no one
had any interest in. (It may have been my old one as I was one of the
earliest adopters of this type of hardware. Because of possible future
local interest by a few of us involved in emergency communicationse I
had a slight interest in an old MFJ 1270 packet TNC. I offered him $10
and later upped it to $15, but he would not accept such a low price and
took it home, even though we both know that he will never use it again
considering how many years it has be unused. He pointed out that he had
bought this TNC used for $75 a decade or so ago. And the ham he bought
it from was ... me! I did not even recall I had sold the TNC to him as
it may have been 15 years ago, which goes to show you how long it has
been since VHF packet networking was a viable activity in our area. Talk
about changes!

Only one other ham bought anything computer related and he had two 500
MHz Pentiums with 64 meg RAM. Price = Free. There were no takers. That
tells you that most hams have a lot more advanced computer and that is
where they spent a big part of what would have been their ham hardware
buget for some kind of TNC box.

Rick, KV9U

I think you missed a point- That $300 is IN ADDITION to the rig cost. If

I think we would not have to look long or hard
to find thousands of testimonies that the marketing
folks are generally wy out in front of the
technical folks.

I sure can recall experiences in the computer and
communications fields and am sure many others here
can as well.

Experience teaches that the more complex = the more
points of potential failure.

Amateur Radio is at its most valuable when our backup
communications systems are simple and redundant and
we leave the costly and complex systems to the
"professionals" -- who will call us to bail them out
when their billion dollars magical solutions fail.

We all remember that the Titanic was built by
professionals, the Ark by an Amateur. :-)

I believe that remembering the 80's and 90's would be
good. You cannot use the same yardstick in every
country, there are specificities you cannot ignore.

While in North America the hams used TNC's, in Germany
a group of hams, precursors of the Baycom Group
invented the Digicom and the Digicom modem.

Even before, when the americans rode Cadillacs and
Buicks, the germans used their VW beetles and the
french their Citroens...

I also feel a decline in ham radio. Many reasons can
be invoked. A friend once told me that - "nowadays,
with the Internet and cell phones, there is no need to
torture yourself with learning electronics and the
Morse code. Ham radio is for romantics"

Lucky us that there are still romantics writing code
and homebrewing equipment!

Many digital modes have faded due to improved and
more popular modes and the fragmentation of digital
modes & their ops.

Not to discourage innovation but perhaps a very
centralized and unbiased Web page that compares
and contrasts all of the modes would assist Hams
in making choices for the best of the myriad
choices.

That would both promote innovation because developers
will want to be at the top of the list and because
users will flock to the best.

If Pactor, packet Amtor, etc. all died because of the need for a $300 TNC,
I think amateur radio as a hobby really is dying! $300 in today's money is
nothing compared to what many amateurs paid for their HF rigs years ago.
