Skip,

I installed Digipan, on Windows 7 Home Premium, in c:\digipan and set Windows
XP compatibility mode.

When I start Digipan a window pops up to ask if I want to allow the program to
run. After clicking on Yes, Digipan runs normally. The same window and
question occurs when I run MixW 2.19.

Digipan will now write to its log file. However, the help file seems to be not
compatible with Windows 7.

2009-12-06 Thread dave_ad2q
I use a BuxComm RASCAL GLX interface to the rig, which is an FT-897D.
I use a USB to serial adapter cable to key the rig through the interface.

I discovered yesterday that Digipan was not keeping a log.
So I reinstalled Digipan in c:\digipan and set it to run under Windows 98
compatibility mode. We will see if it keeps a log now.

Was reading up on the netbooks recentlyi, and seems like their speed and
capability are pretty near what normal computers were, just a short few 5-6
years ago , or even less, except for the fact they have no cd/dvd built in.
Also, of course, no db9 connectors, etc. They do have, though, jacks for an
outboard keyboard, mouse, monitor, and frankly if I had a notebook, I would be
using those here in the house anyway. But, also the OS can be an iffy
situation. I noticed, of the three on stock at the local Walmart, one of them
had XP in it (about a month ago- now maybe W7?). It was only about 50 dollars
less than the cheapest laptop, and given the fact it had no CD reader/writer,
and the laptop did, it would simply make no sense to purchase it, over the
laptop. Both said the battery hour supply was within about 20 minutes of each
other, land that seems to be a great distinction in prices between the whole
display sitting there, price wise.

has been great! The netbook is used only for the ham station. I have very
little space for a laptop or monitor so the netbook works great. I use WIFI for

I have a Asus netbook and it will run the most common digital modes of psk31
and rtty without any problems.  I would not recommend the netbook to take the
place of a 'real' computer.  They are handy to carry with you.  There is a lot
of stuff in a small package, but to get the battery life the speed is not too
fast.  However, they are plenty fast for small applications if only running one
program at a time.  I have ran Skype  without any problems.  I also have an
external TV tuner that works well with it.   I like the fact the battery life
is very long compaired to the normal laptop.  About 6 hours or more depending
on the usage.  Also it has everything built in except for a cd/dvd drive.  They
can be bought for about $ 50.  I don't have one as I have not found a need for
one yet.  If I want to load some softwear  I put the disc in the desktop and
use the wireless router to install the softwear.

The screen is small and it takes good eyes.  Also in the 1024x768 mode (think
that is the one) I only get about 2/3 of a page on the screen and have to
scrool down to see the rest of the page.

Most digital modes do not take that much of a computer, I ran psk31 on an old
486 computer not too long afer psk 31 came out.
Ran rtty on less of a machine than that.

As with anything, you have to know what it will do and what it will not do .

The trouble with Hotmail is that it's an online email system, so you
don't get to preview the messages and, once you've been hacked, all your
contacts then get spammed with what appears to be your address and they,
in turn, then have their address book compromised if they are on Hotmail.

This then results in loads of people suggesting to you that your PC has
been compromised, when it's actually the MSN/Hotmail/Microsoft system
that's been compromised...

All in all, Hotmail is now not worth the hassle to me so I'm abandoning
it once and for all.

Fortunately, this email account is on my PC, so I can detect and spot
the attempts to hack before they get chance to do any damage.

I'm told that the Kenwood TS-480 already has isolation circuits in its
rear panel Audio in/out circuits as well as the usual computer control
port with PTT, so you don't really need an external interface for that
radio.

It also doesn't suffer from the TS-2000 syndrome of expecting audio

Considering that PSK 31 has been used for almost eleven years by many hams, I
think the tranceiver manufacturers missed the opportunity to add this facility
to their equipment many years ago.

Interest in all forms of digital communication methods grew steadily during the
first years of the new century and including an interface would have encouraged
hams to buy a particular model. My shack has a rats nest of cable which is
unsightly. The inclusion of D-star was obviously considered to be an asset for
the sales of Yaesu, perhaps it is popular in Japan, but I believe a PSK
interface would have helped to sell more Yaesu equipment worldwide.

Mel,

I would have to agree with you.
It is a shame that for an extra couple of dollars fitting a USB interface and
sound (quality) into the radio would open digital up to more uses.
I too have a maze of cables running through the shack connecting radios to
computers and others. Being able to run one single USB cable that would do Rig
control and data would get rid (in my case) 3 cables. But I do what I can.
As for D-Star, ICOM is the maker, don't believe Yaesu has anything in their
line-up, same for Kenwood (except the rebrand). I am a Kenwood man and so far I
have resisted going to D-Star until I see what the other makes bring out. If
D-Star was so good WHY haven't the other brands made and sold them?

So for now I am using a Signa-Link USB for the digital modes which makes things
a little tidier. Still I have a messy shack.

Bye for now.

Kevin, ZL1KFM.

PS. I am looking forward to full digital voice on HF when it gets better to
setup. A simple interface box (at a resonable price as well)

It is that time again, as we approach our 10th January in existence
it is time to seek you nominations for the Annual Digitalradio Awards.

My vote goes to Patrick -- his innovations and responsiveness to user
requests are a shining example of the true amateur spirit.

I'm assuming you mean something other than the USB interfaces on the Icom 7200,
7600, and 9100 transceivers? They have USB audio and rig control via the USB
port.

 Mel,

I would have to agree with you.
It is a shame that for an extra couple of dollars fitting a USB interface and
sound (quality) into the radio would open digital up to more uses.
I too have a maze of cables running through the shack connecting radios to
computers and others. Being able to run one single USB cable that would do
Rig control and data would get rid (in my case) 3 cables. But I do what I can.
As for D-Star, ICOM is the maker, don't believe Yaesu has anything in their
line-up, same for Kenwood (except the rebrand). I am a Kenwood man and so far
I have resisted going to D-Star until I see what the other makes bring out.
If D-Star was so good WHY haven't the other brands made and sold them?

So for now I am using a Signa-Link USB for the digital modes which makes
things a little tidier. Still I have a messy shack.

 Bye for now.

 Kevin, ZL1KFM.

PS. I am looking forward to full digital voice on HF when it gets better to
setup. A simple interface box (at a resonable price as well)

Considering that PSK 31 has been used for almost eleven years by many hams,
I think the tranceiver manufacturers missed the opportunity to add this
facility to their equipment many years ago.

Interest in all forms of digital communication methods grew steadily during
the first years of the new century and including an interface would have
encouraged hams to buy a particular model. My shack has a rats nest of cable
which is unsightly. The inclusion of D-star was obviously considered to be an
asset for the sales of Yaesu, perhaps it is popular in Japan, but I believe a
PSK interface would have helped to sell more Yaesu equipment worldwide.

   Kind regards, Mel G0GQK

I would guess that D-Star is the intellectual property right of Icom, so
if other manufacturers want to use it they would have to pay Icom for
the right to do so. I can't see many manufacturers wanting to tie their
future development to a competitor by including something that the
competitor controlled...

There is an alternative that implements D-Star which uses a dongle unit
into the PC to interface other radios, but it isn't cheap. I guess that
could be due to rights payments as well?

Personally, and I am a bit of a sucker for strange new modes, I can't
see what D-Star would give me that I need or want at present. Even
digital audio over Amateur bands seems to have more down sides than up
to me.

With all due respect to Patrick, all of his fantastic work and his fan club,
this year really belongs to someone else.

I nominate for a dual award, Best New Digital Mode and Digital Innovations
Award: WINMOR and Rick Muething!

This is perhaps the most significant advance in HF throughput, not to mention
ARQ performance, in many years and it's FREE. For a long time a worthy
competitor to Pactor that did not infringe on SCS intellectual property has
been a Holy Grail. Well, it's here! Providing in excess of Pactor 2 performance
AND at the same time it's substantially more bandwidth efficient with 500 and
1600Hz modes. AND it has arguably THE most effective busy channel detector yet
implemented. No other mode has the same potential to make global HF
communications a more accessible tool for the average user and a more effective
tool for the EMCOM community. Finally, for all you doubters, a WINMOR enabled
RMS beta test station is already running!

Congratulations to Rick and the entire WINMOR team and I hope Andy chooses
wisely :-)

P.S. Andy, did you get that ten bucks I sent you... ;-)

Hi - I have been lurking here since I am very much a newbie - but here is
the Wikipedia article on DSTAR

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-STAR

and

http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=12005

DSTAR is an open standard, although Icom has been the first to include it
with their radios.

DSTAR is promoted by Icom, Yaesu has WIRES -

http://www.vxstd.com/en/wiresinfo-en/

DSTAR currently has the largest installed user base from what I have heard.
