Ran Skysweeper tonight and PC-HFDL and I tell you, PC-HFDL is the cats meow with Google earth or DX Atlas, plots the aircraft and all other data nicely to see what is happening. Only $35.00 for PC-HFDL vs. $400.00 plus (pounds) for Skysweeper.. Sure Skysweeper has loads of other modes it could decode, but then MultiPSK blows that out of the water for price and performance. Same here, been using digi modes for years and only find now that programs like MultiPSK and a few others offer that, but I find MultiPSK way too much to use. It would give us all a direction to point when questions come up. I passed the question to my ARES crew that is posted in the subject area as it is an important question and with great scenarios. We just went through the largest mass exercise in Ontario called Trillium Exercise here in Thunder Bay Ontario. ARES was not involved as much as they should have been but we did have a chance to pass traffic via radio during the time. Anyhow, we too are in an area where we have a large mass of land and few hams to fill it. I have many areas in my ARES district that are vacant, so again getting those messages there are going to be tough both ways if all power and communications are down. Consensus here has MT63 as the mode of choice in digital traffic and use of NVIS antennas. We use it for CFARS as well Anyway, I think it is a great question and some good answers have come out of it. One obvious choice for pushing messages to the field would be multicast ( on any band, depending on the range you are after, etc.. ) One transmitter pushes the data to an unlimited number of recipients, who all get it at the same time. No point-to-point system can compete with it, multicast is much, much faster for distributing the same data to many locations. One is up in the years and has not been on the air in years as well as to weak to do much. As far as the other 2, one is chief of police. The other is #2 in command on the fire department.

[digitalradio] Dell Inspiron 1501 and SSTV
Gang: I am trying to set up my dell for field and portable use. I have it working good for PSK using a Signalink SL-1 between the rig and computer (I use both FT857 and 817 with this computer). The last few days have tried using the computer on SSTV but not able to copy anything, I have tried radio to radio on 10 meters and 2 meters. The AUTO RX Mode will snoop out Scottie2 start and then go bak to AUTO with no decode or no TXID from the other radio. Is this a possible soundcard issue or maybe settings in the signalink, I don't think the link as I tried with the SL-1 I have attached to my FT857 and tower computer. Thanks for any help Fred VE3FAL
[digitalradio] Dell latitude and MMSSTV
Ok, played locally tonight on 2 meters FM SSTV and my main computer with SL-1+ and FT857 worked like a charm. Laptop and SL-1+ and FT817 copied W1AW on 40 meters RTTY and Pactor 100 %. Try and copy signals on SSTV and the volume level indicator turns green and the picture starts to copy and then goes back into AUTO and no more copy. I have Sigma tel soundcard (I think that is what it says).. Any help on this one.. Oh I took the SL-1 from my FT-817 and swapped for SL-1 from FT-857 and no change. The one from the FT817 transmitted 100 % on the FT-857. Ok, good night. Fred VE3FAL

Did you test PAX or PAX2? with Unproto frames? 73 Patrick I used PAX2 with Unproto frames during the test. Haven't figured out how to test in the 'connect' mode yet. I just finished testing PAX 1 so please see below. PAX has a definite advantage in sensitivity over PAX-2 as well as the ability to print better when conditions are disturbed. There's a 3db advantage in sensitivity over PAX-2 when the criteria is based on 100% decode. But partial decodes at -6 and -10db vs. 0db and -2db would seem to indicated that PAX would do much better than PAX-2 in the ARQ connect mode. Would appreciate your thoughts on this Patrick... Repeats over and over, with each repeat lasting 10 seconds, with a 5 second pause between iterations. Begins with a downward modulated tone for about 1 second, followed by about 3 raspy pulses per second for the remaining 9 seconds. Silence, then starts again. Almost reminds me of the old OTH radar in the 50's and 60's. The signal occupies about 750 Hz of bandwidth, and there is a PSK station just below it.
