[digitalradio] Re: Half Square Antenna
For a good number of years I did allot of experimenting with 1/2 wave inverted L's and T's on 160 meters with no ground system and had very good results. I published a web page about it at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o9.htm One night on 160 meters with 100 watts on SSB I got a 10 over S9 report from a station in England from here in Florida. 73, Thomas F. I became a ham since 1989 and my Elmer back then was a crusty old 1x2 in his 80's. Of all the sage advice he gave me, here is the one that he emphasized the most. Don't ever ask the FCC to rule on anything about ham radio. If you do poke that sleeping giant in the eye with a stick you will never like the answer that he gives you. On occasion over the many years I've seen that advice repeated many times in print. However in recent years that lesson seems to have gotten lost in the QRM. [digitalradio] New Sunspot Group #11043
Posted Sunday January 31, 2010 at 1500 UTC at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm On Saturday the 30th a new solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged in NE quadrant of the Sun near N27E35 and was numbered 11043 by NOAA/SWPC. It contains a beta magnetic signature capable of producing B class and isolated C class solar flares. On Saturday the 30th the solar flux index values were 77.0 75.0 74.2 and the sunspot number 25. We have had visible sunspots for 10 days in a row, 23 of the last 24 days and 34 of the last 36 days. I think that we can safely say that solar cycle 24 is well underway and steadily picking up it's pace. Sunspot group #11041 is now a spotless plage near S27W58 and will soon cross the SW limb of the Sun. 73 GUD DX, Thomas F. [digitalradio] New Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group
Posted Thursday December 24, 2009 at 1300 UTC at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm A new solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged early this morning. It is located near S27E26 and appears to have a simple beta magnetic signature. If and when it's numbered by NOAA/SWPC it will be #11040. If numbered then the month of December has seen seven solar cycle 24 sunspot groups emerge. And of course that is a new record for solar cycle 24. The solar flux index values for December 23rd were 80.7 78.4 76.8 and the sunspot number 23. 73, GUD DX, Merry X-mas Happy New Year, Thomas F. [digitalradio] Some Solar Cycle 24 Firsts
Posted Wednesday December 16, 2009 at 1400 UTC at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm Sunspot group #11035 near N30W13 has grown into the largest (seven times larger than the Earth) and most magnetically complex (beta-gamma) sunspot group of solar cycle 24. At 0102 UTC the sunspot group released a small C5.3 solar flare, the largest solar flare of solar cycle 24. More small C class solar flares are possible, with a chance for an isolated medium size M class solar flare. #11035 also produced the first partially geoeffective (Earth facing) coronal mass ejection (CME) of solar cycle 24. The CME will arrive at Earth in a approximately two days and could spark a geomagnetic storm and visible aurora. Another geoeffective CME is possible, with an associated sudden ionosphere disturbance (SID) and shortwave fadeout (SWF). The sunspot count is 38 which is the highest of solar cycle 24. The solar flux index is 82 which is tied for the highest SFI of solar Cycle 24. With the increased sunspot count we should see improved propagation conditions on 15 and 12 meters. 73, GUD DX, Merry X-mas Happy New Year, Thomas F. [digitalradio] New Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group
Posted Friday November 20, 2009 at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm Yesterday evening another new solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged in the NE quadrant of the Sun in between sunspot group #11032 and #11033. If numbered by NOAA/SWPC it will be #11034 and SIDC Belgium Catania #32. The NOAA/SWPC sunspot number is 30 (tied for the highest so far for solar cycle 24) and the SIDC Belgium sunspot number is 26. The solar flux index (SFI) is 78.0. The new sunspot groups could push the SFI above 80 in coming days. This would raise the maximum usable frequency (MUF) of the F layer high enough to improve propagation conditions on 20, 17 and 15 meters. Solar cycle 24 continues to ramp up this month. Posted Thursday November 19, 2009 at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm The cycle 24 sunspot group that I mentioned on November 18, 2009 has been numbered 11033 by the NOAA/SWPC. It is located near N17E20 and contains a beta magnetic signature capable of producing very small B class solar flares. As mentioned yesterday SIDC Belgium assigned it Catania #28. The old solar cycle 24 sunspot group #11029 has produced new sunspots and has been re-numbered 11033 by NOAA/SWPC. SIDC Belgium has given the sunspot group Catania 30. It is located near N21E47 and contains a beta magnetic signature capable of producing very small B class solar flares. The NOAA/SWPC sunspot number is 29 (the second highest so far for solar cycle 24) and the SIDC Belgium sunspot number is 30. The solar flux index (SFI) is 77.4. [digitalradio] Yet Another New Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group
Posted Sunday November 15, 2009 at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm Yesterday yet another solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged, this time in the NE quadrant of the Sun near N29E35. As of yet it has not received a number by SIDC Belgium or NOAA/SWPC. If numbered by NOAA/SWPC it would receive #11031. This new sunspot group pushed the solar flux index (SFI) to 75.9 yesterday and could push the SFI above 80 in coming days. This would raise the maximum usable frequency (MUF) of the F layer high enough to improve propagation conditions on 20, 17 and 15 meters. Under the very old method of counting sunspots SIDC Belgium gave the sunspot group a number of 11. But in reality only one simple sunspot actually emerged. The solar cycle 24 sunspot group that emerged on Friday November 13, 2009 that received SIDC Belgium Catania #25 and located in the SW quadrant of the Sun has faded, with it's remnant Plage currently setting around the west limb of the Sun. It did not receive #11031 by NOAA/SWPC. Also yesterday old solar cycle 24 sunspot group #11029 rose above the east limb of the Sun but is only a large Plage with no sunspots. Last month #11029 made it's debut as the largest and most active sunspot group in fledgling solar cycle 24. 73 GUD DX, Thomas F. Personally I think that the ARRL continued Morse code practice broadcasts are no longer necessary. If they stopped they would save money on their monthly electric bill. 73 GUD DX, Thomas F. KT4WO Well it does seem to be unique problem because we haven't heard from anyone else with major sync issues (yet). Your comments will hopefully, bring them out of the woodwork. In my experience and in the experience of others, ALE-400 sync issues happen occasionally and are almost always associated with weak signals. As the band fades, the mode dips below it's useful threshold and loses sync. At that point, it's time to quit or switch bands. Trying to continue after that results in a high number of collisions / sync issues because signals are just too weak. If I'm not mistaken, you referred to the sync issue as a major problem that happens 40-to-50 times during a QSO with S-9 plus signals both ways. That certainly seems like a unique situation, but without knowing the circumstances at the time, it's hard to tell what's really going on. We would certainly appreciate a more detailed description of the band conditions when the mode lost sync that excessive number of times. For example; was there heavy QSB, QRM, QRN? Does it ever happen on a clear channel? Does it happen on one band more than others? Does it happen on one PC more than another. You're welcome to sked with me anytime Trip. I'm always on in the evenings starting around 2300z. I run a 5 element 20 meter mono-band Yagi @ 60ft. I'm sure we could work providing the propagation Gods cooperate. Seemed to work well for us. [digitalradio] New Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group
Posted Monday June 22, 2009 at http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf5.htm and http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf72.htm Today a new solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged in the SW quadrant of the Sun near S22E41. Later today NOAA/SWPC should assign it #11023, with a beta magnetic signature. We have seen four solar cycle 24 sunspot groups this month and six in the past 30 days. It appears that solar cycle 24 has finally come alive. 73 GUD DX, Thomas F. [digitalradio] Re: One way propogation?
The RF transmitted signal changes polarization repeatedly as it is refracted between the ionosphere and ground/ocean surface. A horizontally polarized signal radiated from a dipole can arrive at the receiver end with a polarization that is horizontal, vertical and even elliptical. Therefore antenna polarization reciprocity is not necessary on MF and HF frequencies to make contacts. 73 GUD DX, Thomas F. [digitalradio] Propagation Forecast To Return
On Friday October 31, 2008 I'm going to begin publishing my LF/MF/HF/6M frequency radiowave propagation forecast once again. It will be located at http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf6.htm . I have an archive of daily solar, space weather and geomagnetic data going back through 2001. Year 2001 is at http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf5c.htm when solar cycle 23 was at peak. Wow what a difference in activity then versus now. 73, Thomas F. [digitalradio] Re: Yet another RTTY contest
I'll be working the JARTS test, RTTY contesting is my favorite. Contesters and DXers do drive new rig designs, antennas, etc that we all get to buy and operate. Also contesting is the only niche in the hobby that is growing appreciably. Having said that if contest sponsors would designate specific frequency sub bands for contest operation, this would go a long way in quelling the tensions between contesters and rag chewers. Operate outside the designated sub band and the contact doesn't count. Just my .22 due to inflation. 73, Thomas F. [digitalradio] 160 Meter Operation
At 0048 UTC this morning I made a PSK31 contact with KC4SAW on 1807.365 kc. The lightning QRN is dropping and propagation conditions good so it's time to put up a 1/2 wave dipole or 1/4 wave inverted L and work some digital modes on 160 meters. 73 God Bless, Thomas F. [digitalradio] New Solar Cycle Sunspot Group
Posted Tuesday September 22, 2008 at http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf5.htm : Today is the first day of the fall season. It began at 1545 UTC. A new solar cycle 24 sunspot group (S731) formed at N20W12 on Sunday September 21, 2008. It should be numbered as 11001 today by NOAA/SWPC. Officially the last solar cycle 24 sunspot group to form (#10993) was on May 4, 2008. Unofficially the last solar cycle 24 sunspot group to form was on August 2, 2008. For what ever reason NOAA/SWPC failed to number this sunspot group. 73 God Bless, Thomas F. Giella Lakeland, FL, USA [EMAIL PROTECTED],net

[digitalradio] Re: Open Wire Feedline Length
There can be no one size fits all ladder line length for a multiband antenna. Allot of variables come in to play such as other nearby antenna's, trees, power lines, etc that interact with a multi band antenna in an unpredictable manner. I use a fan doublet with individual elements for 80, 40, 20 and 10 meters and it is fed with 122 feet of 300 ohm window line to a balanced Johnson Viking Matchbox http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf36.htm . It works very well on 80-10 meters including the WARC bands. I do have a bit of RFI on 40 meters if I run PSK31 at an output power above 50 watts. I have varied the length of the window line between 100 and 130 feet with no change on the RFI situation on 40 meters. Using the same antenna with an old MFJ-989B tee network antenna tuner I had RFI on almost all bands. 73 God Bless, Thomas F. [digitalradio] Re: Multiple Digital Modes: Time to get rid of most ?
During the TARA Skirmish I made allot of contacts on PSK31/63/125 and RTTY only, on 40 and 20 meters. Also during the weekend period I had quite a few QSO's on Hell during the Feld Hell Club contest. Last weekend I made allot of contacts on PSK31/63/125 during the 070 Flavors contest. During the past seven days I made quite a few MFSK16 and OLIVIA 500/16 contacts on 40 and 20 meters by answering CQ's. However outside of PSK31, OLIVIA and RTTY there does seem to be fewer hams using the other modes during the weekdays. I've been operating the digital modes since 2003 and I've never worked anyone on RTTYM, Contestia or MT63 and only a few contacts on Throb. 73 God Bless, Thomas F. [digitalradio] Bands aren't dead
Of course the bands aren't dead. Ham's think they are, so they don't operate, so the bands appear to be dead, so they are dead. It's self inflicted self fulfilling prophesy. All through the Winter 2005-2006 period I found 20 meters to be open around the clock to one place or another. My favorite past time is working long path when most ham's are listening in the opposite direction or not operating at all. I've work allot of juicy DX on the digital modes that way with no competition. I've also worked allot of DX on 15 meters. I've even worked some DX on 12 and 10 meters due TEP and Es propagation. With the solar flux temporarily above 100 again and near equal daylight in both hemispheres the bands are in pretty good shape. It's just a matter of understanding some basic HF propagation theory. --... ...--, Thomas F. [digitalradio] New Yahoo eGroup Hellschreiber (FELD HELL)
There is allot of new activity on HF Hellschreiber and it's growing rapidly, so we need a means of communications between operators ASAP. Therefore I have created a new digital mode Yahoo eGroup called Hellschreiber (FELD HELL). The website is located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/feldhell and all interested parties are welcome to join. Please spread the word about the new eGroup. Membership requires approval to keep out spammers but thereafter all posts will be unmoderated. This only my second foray into the creation of a Yahoo eGroup but hopefully I have set it up correctly. Dennis are you setting the rig output power control to the max. of approximately 100 watts? If you do that, set sound card volume sliders to a mid range setting and then use the rig mic gain control you should be able to get up to 100 watts output on PSK31 with no ALC reading and a -25 to -30 IMD. The Mark V Field put's out an exceptionally clean signal up to 100 watts output on the digital modes. [digitalradio] Oliviadata Yahoo eGroup Censorship
Andy,I see that you removed the complete recent thread from the Oliviadata Yahoo eGroup that I posted concerning Bonny KQ6XA and her 20 meter Olivia band planning nonsense. I also see that you have her nonsense posted on the main page of the Oliviadata Yahoo eGroup too, so apparently she has you under her controlling, politically correct, troublemaking spell. Bonnie is a troublemaker extraordinaire on every digital modes e-list I'm subscribed to, plus the QRZ.com forums. She really doesn't give a flip about the OLIVIA mode and is just trying to protect her little ALE special interest group world above 14100 kc, sickening. So my response will be to unsubscribefrom the Oliviadata Yahoo eGroup, as I have no tolerance for people that have no tolerance for the 1st amendment. Also I will make sure to the best of my ability that OLIVIA is still operated above 14100.000 kc. I think I will also begin a competing OLIVIA mode Yahoo eGroup that respects the 1st amendment. And Bonnie every e-list I see you post your troublemaking nonsense too I will be there to counteract it.--... ...--,Thomas F. [digitalradio] Re: ARRL To QSY To 1807.500 KC
Bob et all, One of the issues concerns band plans. The ARRL proposed a 160 meter bandplan a few years ago which included 1800-1810 kc for digital modes. Just a few nights ago W3UR Bernie McClenny who has the How's DX column in QST appointed himself ARRL band policeman by complaining on the OH2AQ DX spot that U.S. hams were violating the ARRL band plan, which says no SSB operation below 1843 kc. There were hams working SSB DX on 1840 kc during the best band opening on 160 meters since the bottom of cycle 22 more than ten years ago. But now the ARRL has decided to violate their own plan by QSYing to 1807.500 kc. While at the same time they propose to use band plans to control the madness and mayhem that will occur if their segregation by bandwidth proposal is accepted by the FCC. It's hypocricy period. --... ...--, Thomas F. Giella, KN4LF Lakeland, FL, USA Grid Square EL97AW [EMAIL PROTECTED] KN4LF Amateur SWL Radio History: http://www.kn4lf.com KN4LF 160 Meter Propagation Theory Notes: http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf8.htm guess the problem is that there are so many facets of HAM radio that just about any transmission by some is QRM to somone else. My experience is that there is no benefit in HAM radio to declarations that someone elses transmissions are not useful and are QRM. Better to live-and-let-live. Some people think DX is an absolute waste of RF, others think rag chewing is a waste of time. Some think nets are a waste, etc. So my only point was that in HAM radio usually nothing is accomplished by trying to declare some other operation as useless. There is always someone who likes it. Glad to hear the band is being used by so many... that it is an issue. Bob ___ Keep in mind that only registered email addresses can post in the list. [digitalradio] Re: ARRL Move To 1807.500 KC
Here is my email request to Joe Carcia concerning the ARRL plan to QSY from 1817.500 kc to 1807.500 kc. It's the last post I'm going to make on the subject. Either you take the initiative to try and stop the move or when it occurs don't complain. I suspect that the response from the digital community will be anemic as most don't operate on 160 meters. However if the QSY was to 14070 kc there would be more of an uproar. Joe, As an ARRL member in good standing I'm advising you that it is a very bad idea to QSY W1AW operations from 1817.500 kc to 1807.500 kc beginning on April 3rd, 2006. 1807.500 kc +/- 3 kc is a main and very active frequency slice for weak signal PSK31, MFSK16, OLIVIA MFSK and RTTY digital operations. W1AW operation there would wipe out this main meeting frequency and more. On 160 meters the ARRL band plan calls for digital modes between 1800-1810 kc and CW between 1800-2000 kc, so it makes no sense to begin operation on 1807.500 kc. If you do the math it's 10 kc for digital modes and 200 kc for CW. I'm an avid CW operator too and I'm aware of the pressure the 160 meter CW DX community has been putting on your 1817.500 kc operations. But the solution to that issue is not to QSY down to 1807.500 kc. Please reconsider your frequency choice. --... ...--, Thomas F. [digitalradio] Re: Olivia Frequencies 14080.0, etc
Why avoid the 14080 kc RTTY scared cow frequency? We shouldn't andI say thatas abig time RTTY operator! Everyone wants to stake out their own little turf frequencies according to the mode that "they" like to operate. We don't need to avoid use of ALE or MT63 turf frequencies either, because "no one" owns a frequency. The key is listening before you transmit no matter what the mode and frequency. It's just common sense and courtesy and a convention that PACTOR stations violate with impunity. As far as Olivia what we need is a general consensus as to which submode that we will operate with "initially". PSK operators almost alwaysbegin with b/r of31 and then shift to 63 if they want to, RTTY ops a 45.45 b/r. I know that I will always be able to establish initial contact with a PSK or RTTY operator. In my personal experience with Olivia 500/8 works pretty good for stateside QSO's when taking QRM, QRN and QSB into account. On DX paths 500/16 seems a pretty good choice. As my personal suggestion let's all start off with those sub modes when calling CQ, then once we make contact we can shift to whatever we want too whether it be 1000/32 or 250/8. It's a bummer to me when I can't answer an OliviaCQ because I can't figure out which sub mode the station is using. And speaking of which mode is best under poor band conditions? Once again in my personal experienceOlivia never out performs PSK31 or MFSK16 and PSK31 never outperforms MFSK16. Consistently MFSK16 wins under poor band conditions of QRM, QRN and QSB both for stateside and DX. Just my .02. --... ...--,Thomas F. Re: [digitalradio] RM-11306
Dave et all, The first sentence in my last email, "We silly Americans think that just because we prop up the rest of the world with $$$ and also protect it from the "real" bad guys, that the world should do everything "our way." and the use of the word bickering was tongue in cheek. It's good to see all the discourse going onconcerning RM-11306, as it means people still care about the hobby. For me personally the discovery of the digital modes 3+ years ago brought about a big resurgence in interest in ham radio for me. I was so put off and disgusted by the goings on on SSB and the gated community mentality amongst allot of CW ops. that I was literally selling off my equipment and getting out of the hobby. I have yet to have a negative digital modes QSO. In recent years it seems thatto manyof the bad ideasthat were forced on us and brought about detrimental changesto ourhobby occurred in seemingly relative silence. The same politically correct forces within our society that have lowered standards across the board and caused a dumbing down of our society in general are after ham radio too. --... ...--,Thomas F. That's why there are more than 900 RM-11306 comments filed on the FCC web site, compared with the 20 comments filed when 97.221 was proposed in April 1995.Whatever the outcome, this increase in engagement makes our discussions anything but a big waste of time.By the way, Thomas, I thought your RM-11306 comment was excellent. 73, Dave, AA6YQ--- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, "Thomas Giella KN4LF" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: We silly Americans think that just because we prop up the rest of the world with $$$ and also protect it from the "real" bad guys, that the world should do everything "our way". I seem to remember a mantra that was prevalent about 19 years ago when I first got my license. It went something like this, "Never ask the FCC to regulate us because they will over do it and we won't like the result." Seems we have forgotten that concept now. Nowadays the FCC finds Amateur Radio to be an annoyance that just won't go away. In recent years the FCC seems to have said no to any proposal put forth by the ARRL that would increase the FCC's oversight thereof. So I fully expect the FCC to squash RM-11306 and all of the bickering here on this eGroup about it will have been a big waste of time. Just my .02 cents. 73, Thomas F. There is an awfull lot of world outside of the "States". The US hams seem to think that any country that has band plans different to theirs are wrong!!
