Re: [IxDA Discuss] Is Collaging Useful

2009-06-04 Thread Löwgren Jonas

Margoleath,

Here are some collage-related techniques I have used over the years.

Traditional moodboards: Works well to inform visual design aspects of
screen-based interaction. Does not really support temporal aspects
(interaction flows).

Cutout animation (see webzone.k3.mah.se/k3jolo/Download/ausdr.pdf):
Works well to visualize use scenarios that are difficult to express in
video sketches. Downside is that they are more expensive than video
sketches to make.

Example catalog (pre-produced collection of distinctive examples
within the design genre at hand; see webzone.k3.mah.se/k3jolo/
visCat/): Works well if used properly to involve non-specialists in
early phases of design processes, helps other stakeholders understand
interaction design processes and concerns to a certain extent.
Downside for non-specialist use (particularly managers) is that the
catalog cards sometimes stimulate premature or unwarranted decisions
based on superficial visual preference.

Best regards,
Jonas Löwgren

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Sort order for listing languages in setup / settings

2009-06-04 Thread Yohan Creemers
There is no perfect solution I'm afraid. Using the native language
name seems most logical, but then ordering alphabetically is not
possible. http://www.wikipedia.org/ uses the native language name and
orders by sound.

For choosing a default language, you could use the language
preference of the user.

With each request the browser includes the language preference of the
user. It's stored in the variable HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE and will look
like something as "en-ca,en;q=0.8,fr-ca;q=0.5,fr;q=0.3".

The http_accept_language variable contains a comma separated list of
possible languages/locales, each (optional) with a quotient
indicating the order of importance.

To check your own language setting visit:

[IxDA Discuss] Save and Canvel buttons in popup screen

2009-06-04 Thread Michael
I know there are conventions when using the save and cancel buttons.
Windows for example has the save button on the left and cancel on the
right.

at the moment i have a problem. We use webapplications with pop-up
screens at work. here we have a major discussion goeing on wheter the
save button should be left or right...pfff.

here is an example of a screen. Given that the user works his way
from left top to right bottom i say the save button right.

our developers disagree

[IxDA Discuss] Cultural Differences in Discussion Board Usage

2009-06-04 Thread Carolyn Chandler
I was talking to someone recently who had heard that there are cultural
differences in the amount of usage of discussion boards. In particular,
she heard that discussion boards are not as frequently used in Europe as
they are in the US, in general. Since we want to encourage adoption of
discussion boards on the company intranet, I'm interested to hear if
anyone has info on:

The frequency of use of discussion boards, varied by region

The adoption of discussion boards on a company intranet, especially if
there are cultural differences

Any differences people have noticed when testing discussion boards with
a mix of regions or cultures represented

The features we're looking at are pretty typical (posting and replying
to discussions or questions) so my gut feel is that there probably isn't
a huge difference, but I'm trying to figure out how important it is to
make region one of our variables for testing.

Thanks in advance!

If I needed to represent under ten languages, I would display a grid

2009-06-04 Thread guandai
Hi,
It is interesting to considerate this question again and again.
Because each language has the pronunciation in English, it is better
to follow one language to make the list. As Microsoft or Google, they
use English alphabet to list whole languages, but they change the text
into original languages. So, sometimes it is hard to find which
English words they are using. Such as, Chinese could be Simple
Chinese,or Zhong Wen. I saw somewhere Google made the list by English
alphabet first, and write the original form in brackets. so people
could know the way of listing, and find out what they want...

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Save and Canvel buttons in popup screen

2009-06-04 Thread Yohan Creemers
Hi Michael,

The position of Save and Cancel is no longer a matter of logic, only
of convention. The best would be to detect which operating system the
visitor is using and place the buttons accordingly. Second best option
is to find out which operating system is used by the majority of the
user base, and follow that convention.

Both Microsoft and Apple offer excellent User Interface Guidelines.
It's advisable to follow the guidelines unless you can motivate why
deviating is better.

[IxDA Discuss] Arrival time in a form

2009-06-04 Thread Pietro Desiato
I was reflecting on the best way to indicate the arrival time in a
form when you are reserving a room and want to communicate it.

At the moment, I have spotted two main designs:

1. A dropdown list with hour value from 00 to 24

2. Two dropdown lists: the first with 1 to 12 values and the second
with am\pm values

In the first case users would have a longer list, in the second two
interactions would be needed (one, if the default value of the second
dropdown is the most used...)

Do you have any best practice \ reccommendations about this?

thanks

Hi,

if your target users use Apple computers, follow Apple's convention,
having the OK to the right and Cancel to the left. (This is the better
solution from a Human Factor's perspective.)

If your target users use Microsoft Windows applications, follow
Microsoft's conventions, having the OK to the left and Cancel to the
right. (Consistency, above all...)

In either case, have both buttons next to each other, and not as in
your sketch, which follows the now defunct Motif standard,
distributing the buttons across the window's width.

Instead of having Save and Cancel on opposite ends (which is against

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Arrival time in a form

2009-06-04 Thread Josh Coe
Who is your target audience? If it's the entire world, then I'd have
two separate defaults based on location. Otherwise, pick the option
that is more likely to be the standard of the target user. The
usability issue of having a longer list does not outweigh the
usability issue of using the time standard with which the target user
is most familiar.

To follow convention, you should also consider allowing users to
select the minutes field as well, if the system allows this.

"In most countries, computers by default show the time in 24-hour
notation. For example, Windows XP activates the 12-hour notation by
default only if a computer's language and region settings are:

* Albanian
* English (only in Australia, Belize, Canada, Caribbean, Jamaica,
New Zealand, Philippines, Trinidad, South Africa, United States, and
Zimbabwe)
* Greek
* Spanish (only in Mexico and parts of South America)
* Swahili"

Apple takes an interesting approach:
http://www.apple.com/choose-your-country/

Overall, the languages are broken up by region. Some are listed in
English, some with native characters, and some with both. However,
the common element for each is the icon of the country's flag.

As an English speaker, I find this approach usable, but possibly only
because I can read the regional headings and narrow down the
selection.

I can see how a non-English speaker would have a difficult time
searching for their country's flag when there's at least 50 of them
on that page. Too many colors, stripes, stars, other similarities
between each.

I agree. The shiny white circle at the top of the button-shaped flags
makes the flag colors hard to distinguish or even to tell what color
they should be and it is also hard on the eyes. You lose all the detail
in the periphery of the flag that makes it immediately recognizable to
natives. Also, people aren't used to looking up at a circular flag on
the flagpoles in their respective countries.

Great example.

always led to believe that using text was significantly better than
icons or pictures when trying to describe an item, which is why I feel

The fullscreen view is also very nice, but could be improved by
considering Wei Zhou's implementation that used the user's location

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Nice Research on Persona Effectiveness

2009-06-04 Thread frank long
Thank you all for reading my paper and for contributing to this lively
discussion. I have received a lot of queries both by mail and on the
discussion boards so apologies if it takes me a while to reply to
direct questions regarding the research.

I suppose that I should set a few things straight from the outset.

I conducted the research from a neutral stand point. As an
interaction design consultant, I have some experience working with
personas, and I have seen them succeed and fail in various projects.
I was curious as to what impact the persona-based design approach
actually has the design process and ultimately the design solution.

My research was conducted as scientifically as possible
(unfortunately some compromise was unavoidable) - and I took great
care to give the same information to the 3 groups - albeit in
different formats. Same brief, same requirements, same functionality.
The difference was that the control group received raw research data
(facts figures etc) while the other 2 teams received personas built
from this data. I provided image boards to the control group to
visualise the descriptions of the users home and environment given to
the other 2 groups as part of the persona description.

To be effective my research had to have a limited scope. I was not
looking at how to conduct user research or create effective personas
etc. At the end of the project I was able to measure the differences
between the groups, based on the final design work, anonymous
questionnaires and on group interviews with students and tutors.

Based on my findings I can say that personas did make a difference,
both in the usability of the final designs and the team dynamics of
the designers involved. Many of the differences were in areas that
cannot be easily measured such as 'motivation' 'empathy' and
'enthusiasm'. Other factors such as usability were easier to assess
empirically.

The findings show that using personas as a design tool was more
effective in creating 'user-centred' solutions than not using them.
It does not claim that they are a silver bullet solution, in fact the
feedback form both tutors and students point to some of the pitfalls
inherent in the technique.

In particular I believe that the quality of research behind personas
is critical to their success (although 'creating' personas was
outside the scope of this research paper). Much has been made about
the fictional element of personas and how this deviation from
'actual fact' is the weak link with the technique, making personas
scientifically unreliable.

Personas are a design tool - not a scientific instrument. Design is a
creative method for solving problems. Personas are a technique that
makes it easier to visualise the end user and empathise with their
goals and tasks

My research shows that there is some evidence to show that personas
are effective in this regard. I don't claim that it answers the
debate once and for all, but it does show that there is some evidence
in their favour.

Finally, I would not describe myself as a 'persona advocate' - I
dont believe that they work in every situation or with every design
team. As I said at the outset, I have seen them work and fail. I
think the fundamental problem is that they are a complex tool that
seems rather simple to use, but in fact requires great skill and
aptitude. By conducting humble research such as my own, we can
achieve a better understanding of how they work and ultimately how
best to use them.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Save and Canvel buttons in popup screen

2009-06-04 Thread Elana Glazer
I agree with Sudhindra. I would have a Submit button and a cancel
link. (Alternately, you could use a colored button for Submit and a
less obvious color (i.e. gray) for Cancel.)

Both these options will serve the same objective - providing a cue
which option is best for moving forward, while providing a way
"out" should the user not want to complete the task.

In both cases, the location of the main button (Submit) is less
relevant since it is the visual cue, not placement, that is aiding
the user select the most appropriate action.

It makes sense to me; the user could be about to save and then decide
to cancel, or vice versa. These are two very related options and
should be adjacent.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Save and Canvel buttons in popup screen

2009-06-04 Thread Jim Drew
I say it doesn't matter. Users won't experience massive confusion and
be unable to deal with things. Odds are that they have seen buttons in
each position before, yet they still live.

And if it doesn't matter, it isn't worth fighting over.

Just keep the order the same throughout the app, and you're fine.
