Re: [IxDA Discuss] Which is more affective, ratings vs. recommendation

2009-07-07 Thread James Deer
I've had experience of this within the fashion sector.

Using user recommendations is a bit ambiguous, at what point does a
rating of 1 to 5 become a recommendation? Or do you just have a "I
recommend this" button which translates to, you either liked it, or
you didn't. Ratings give the user a little more space, "I liked it
but...".

A rating provides a solid picture.

This product scored an average of 4/5.

Compared to

90% of people recommended this.

What about the last 10%, how many people are within the last 10%. It
raises more questions than what it's worth in my opinion. It's also
harder (not impossible) to represent this easily.

Amazon uses both.

We found using ratings, had higher conversions, we didn't try both
combined.

Best,
James :)

At least their statement of tuition was refreshing - most colleges

I would say that you have to be a good listener. Since you will be
designing for an audience it will be important to listen to that
audience's needs.

A good quote I found at a museum in San Francisco reads "I would
never ask someone what they wanted me to design for them; I would ask
them what their needs are." --Kahn.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction design can affect everyone, not just people who own a computer. What does this mean for IxD?

2009-07-07 Thread Tonia M . Bartz
While it may be difficult, I don't think it's necessarily
impossible.

Sometimes all it takes, is for people to be aware that there are not
only problems with the user interface, but that these issues cause
people to become frustrated and have the potential to cause loss of
profits.

The first meet up I had for the IxDA local group here in Phoenix
addressed the issue of the user interface for the new light rail
system. I had the attendees split into groups and find a way to
enhance the user experience. We didn't have time to refine these
ideas, but it would be nice to think that some day we could present
these. They are also publicly available on our site.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction design can affect everyone, not just people who own a computer. What does this mean for IxD?

2009-07-07 Thread jason
Great questions David R.,

The accountability as I see it, at a superficial level at least
(because I have no real data to support this claim), falls on the
relantionship between the project managers of the design team and the
MBTA stakeholders.

The problem with creating a great, empathetic design with so many
people involved is getting passionate people behind its creation.
I'd guess, and only guess, that the relationship between the people
funding the project and the people designing the system malfunctioned
in some way.

I'm reminded of Dustin Curtis's recent example of American Airlines
(http://dustincurtis.com). The culture makes it very difficult for
great design to happen. My guess is that this example of the MBTA
CharlieCard system is such a culture.

So how can we, as perhaps mere pawns in the game, become spokesmen
(and spokeswomen) for emphasizing and encouaging a culture that
allows for great interaction design?

Jared Spool recently wrote an article about how the market dictates
the emphasis on quality UX. Perhaps goverment-like cultures aren't
ready for that? Who know when they'll be ready. Although Obama seems
to be headed in the right direction. Let's hope they can follow his
administrations lead?

Cheers,

Jason R.

[IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] DELVE:UI 2-Day Masterclass on Web Interface Design - NYC - 8/5 & 8/6

2009-07-07 Thread Fritz Desir
Hello all -

We’ve been working with Adobe, AIGA/NY & the Freelancers Union to put together
a “pop-up” event of sorts. Basically it will be a 2-day series of workshops and
masterclasses all focused on web interface design---called DELVE:UI
(http://www.delvenyc.com). The goal is to take a sort of Agile approach to
events/conferences with each DELVE being:

 *   small (150 max),
 * frequent (hopefully at least 4x per year)
 *   local and
 *   affordable ($595 for 2 days—roughly 50% less than is typical w/15%
discount for IxDA members).

The ultimate being to create an intimate setting by embracing those four
aforementioned constraints and hopefully growing to cover other (crowdsourced)
topics and locales.

I am an IxDA member and serve on the local leader board here in NYC and just
wanted to open this to anyone in NYC or the surrounding area this is NOT a
conference in the traditional sense (due to size and subject—there are no
tracks) so if there’s folks local that would like to attend PLEASE RSVP at the
site (http://www.delvenyc.com).

As for speakers we have confirmed: Lou Rosenfeld, Jina Bolton, Robert Hoekman,
Joshua Porter, Todd Zaki Warfel, Theresa Neil and Liz Danzico (who’ll be
interviewing Jason Santa Maria) and a DEMO of Adobe Flash Catalyst (an IxD
prototyping tool) as well as others, looking forward to seeing any of you guys
interested there... Again see... http://www.delvenyc.com to RSVP for the
discount.

Also feel free to reply with comments with any questions.- Thanks, Fritz

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Which is more affective, ratings vs. recommendation

2009-07-07 Thread Chauncey Wilson
When you are presenting data, please include a measure of variability
and a distribution of scores. The 3.5/5 rating could mean a bunch of
2s and a bunch of 5s and you might have a bimodal distribution which
might have some design implications. I see so many reports where
there is no indication of variability or the actual shape of the curve
formed by the individual ratings.

A mean without a measure of variability is pretty weak in my view
since you don't know what the shape of the distribution is.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction design can affect everyone, not just people who own a computer. What does this mean for IxD?

2009-07-07 Thread David Rondeau
Dave (Malouf),

In some cases, I think designs are being created for systems that do
not get the same kind of "free market" competition that most
commercial products must face. The software on the Boston subway's
Charlie kiosk is not paid for (at least not directly) by the riders
of the subway system. They can't decide to use a different fare
system.

The system was purchased by the MBTA, which probably doesn't have
the skills or knowledge to evaluate the interaction design of the
system and understand the impact a poor interaction design will have.

Once the system has been implemented, there likely isn't any
recourse for the riders or even for the MBTA who is now stuck with
it. So who is responsible for the design problems? The MBTA? The
employees at the MBTA who decided to purchase that kiosk system? The
company that sold the kiosks%u2014Scheidt & Bachmann USA, Inc.? The
product managers at Scheidt & Bachmann? Or the interaction designers
at Scheidt & Bachmann who created the system?

Who should be held accountable for this poor design? Right now, I
don't think anyone is. And I'm not saying the responsible party
should be ostracized or punished in some way either. But if no one
has to take responsibility for the impact of the design, how will
things ever improve?

I was interested in seeing how many other systems are like this, to
try to get a sense of the impact. From your examples, I think that
electronic voting systems definitely fall into this category.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] [anthrodesign] Favorite Discount/Rapid Research Methods

2009-07-07 Thread Sam Ladner
Great question, Todd. I think "guerrilla" methods are more common than
so-called "pure" methods. As a sociologist, I can tell you, 98% of what I've
done in the private sector is NOT what I learned in graduate school!

I personally like the mini-ethnography. Some may consider it to be "real"
ethnography, but I still think it's "mini." Rapidly planned and deployed,
the mini ethnography is basically a toe-dip into the immersive ethno
experience.

Say your topic area is youth and mobile devices. Where are youth? And their
mobile devices? How about the mall? Ok, let's go! Let's talk to a few of
them at the Food Court. Let's watch them with their devices. Let's take some
notes. Have a chat with each other, and then talk more to the kids outside
The Gap.

This can take an afternoon.

Is it ethnography? No, not even close. Is it useful from a design
perspective? Absolutely. It's a quick take on problems, pain points,
contextually relevant themes. It's inspiring. It's fast. It's even fun.

If you want, of course, you can validate your designs using either a survey
(to quantify and test the general trends) or have additional users test the
prototype.

[IxDA Discuss] Favorite Discount/Rapid Research Methods

2009-07-07 Thread Todd Zaki Warfel
This past week I was having a discussion with another UX colleague and
he mentioned using a research method I'd never thought of. It's kind
of a mashup between a focus group and heuristic evaluation. While the
method might not be as thorough as proper usability testing or a full
fledged ethnography, it does provide some value for rapidly gaining
some insight into user needs and how a particular product/service
supports those needs.

That got me thinking about other rapid research methods (sometimes
called guerilla research methods).

What are your favorite rapid/discount/guerilla research methods and why?

1. Don't refer to people as "the masses."
2. Determine via research target markets and figure out if or how
their needs could be met by your product. Going after everyone isn't a
great strategy. You need to determine what group(s) have goals or
behaviors that could be met/enhanced via using your product.

3. Design.

[IxDA Discuss] Designing for the masses

2009-07-07 Thread Dan Robert Ekrem
Hi there,
I'm
all new at this forum and have never posted here yet. But from the
mail I' receiving, this seems
like a very nice interaction design forum.

Now, I'm a interaction design student at the IT-University in Copenhagen (
www.itu.dk), Denmark. This summer I'm in San Francisco doing interaction
design internship at Vuze (www.vuze.com) while also studying at Berkeley
(Entrepreneurial courses).

Chasing to the point (I could talk about the Bay Area and my experiences
here for days...) I'm sat to redesign the "search-function" for the Vuze
client (both the search field and the displaying of the results). Doing
that, there seems to be a couple of factors that needs to be taken into
consideration:

- Vuze is a Torrent Client and have most tech savvy users (male 18-44 is
85%).
- Obviously we want to reach a broader audience like Hulu (online service
only available in the US) while still keep our existing audience.
- We also have a online service where we offer users to download the client
and there is also quite some content on the online service.

Now here is my initial thought and ideas:
- The Bit Torrent "problem": In my mind there are an immediate problem: when
downloading Torrent files, the users are skeptical by nature. The reason for
this, in my mind, is twofold: what illegal/legal content, and danger for
virus or scam files.
- The Bit Torrent search situation: A second problem is that as most users
seem to be somewhat "techies" (at least Vuze users), they are used
to receiving, and expecting, a different set of information (file name, file
size, sender, etc) than "normal users" do. Therefore it is not sure that the
visual way of displaying search results Hulu do are the right solution for
us here at Vuze.

- My idea: To reach out to "the masses" there must be a change in perception
of what Torrent is. Only by changing the understanding of Torrents and
sharing of files we can reach out to a broader audience. (Yes, here I'm
aware of the copyright problem, but let's just say that the files shared and
watched on Vuze is legal). My idea is to change the perception of Vuze from
a Bit Torrent client to "The new Media Experience". In this way we will be
able to go for the "bigger masses", and this will make it easier to make the
design right.

- If anyone have some ideas or comments for how to make the search better in
general - I'm all up for comments!

(Of cource there will be user tests in the near future).
Are there anyone who have worked on this before? Or anyone have any
comments?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Question about survey design

2009-07-07 Thread Brian O'Neill
Hi

You may want to look at http://psr.iq.harvard.edu/

I had the pleasure of briefly working with some of the professors
over at the Institute for Quantitative Social Sciences at Harvard on
a potential design upgrade to Limesurvey in tandem with MITRE.org
last year. I think this website houses some of their knowledge; they
are huge on testing "stimuli and response" as they call it I think
(they don't even call them questions anymore, haha). You are
completely right that there are all sorts of biases possible in
survey design and getting the design of the questions correct is a
huge factor in getting reasonable data back.

As to your question, I agree with Brian that page length and content
matters here; the design without the content would be hard to grade.

cheers!
Brian

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Bike-sharing design

2009-07-07 Thread Simon Rodier
Hi,

We've just had a new service installed here in Montreal (bixi),
created in partnership with bike builder DeVinci. The system was
carefully designed after looking at what other cities implemented,
mainly in Europe. Here's a few notes on how it works.

The bikes are connected to a solar-powered station, and it requires a
subscription to activate any bike. Once subscribed, you enter your
chip-keycard into the station, and the bike is released.

Each trip is required to be of 30 minutes or less, unless you will be
billed on the credit card related to the subscription. Additional 30
minutes are $1.50 CDN.

Each station has 5 to 30 bikes, depending on location. Most stations
are located in the denser area of central Montreal, and are each about
200-500 meters appart, sometimes even closer.

Each station can "tell" you what is the nearest station with a free
spot to land a bike if you can't dock into a full station. Right now,
this feature is not yet activated, however it should be online soon
(the service has been set up only 45 days ago).

The website features a google map custom map with all the infos in
realtime (how many bikes available at each station, how many free
spots, etc). You can also access it using an iPhone or smartphone, or
can call if you have trouble landing a bike after your errand.

The bike is really sturdy, yet pleasing to drive. I work over the
repair shop and after a quick chat with the guys in charge of the
maintenance, the bikes have shown some troubles ranging from small
adjustments to complete vandalism. The number of repairs is a bit
higher than forecasted, but not that much. After using the bikes, I
can personnaly say that most of them are not in perfect shapes
(glitch with shifters, fenders a bit bent, etc) but most are ridable.

Finally, a few nice things about the design of it all:

The bikes are a good example of integrated design for a city bike:
for example, red led lights are integrated in the chain stays, and
the gear system and dynamo are all conveniently hidden into the rear
hub. It makes a harder to destroy bike, but it's also a lesson into
integrated design for everyday bicycle.

The station's interface is quite simple, with a simple button to add
time in case you can't land a bike because the current station is
full, and a simple "repair" button to signal your bike as needing
repairs after it is docked.

However, the single day use of a bike using a credit card for
non-members is not very user-friendly, as you must:

- Read 70 pages of conditions on a small 5 by 5 inches screen on the
station (must people don't)
- Insert your credit card
- Remember a five digits code that you must enter on the docking
anchor of a bike to free it (you can print a ticket to remember the
code, which is a sequence of 5 digits from 1 to 3).
- Once you land a bike and want to take another one, you must
re-insert your credit card, so the station can issue you a new code.
It's probably needed to gather stats on your trip, and ensure the
24h max period. Most people try to enter the same code from the
previous station, and end up calling tech support. One must really
read all the instructions on the station to really understand this
part...!

Hope this helps! :)

Simon

[IxDA Discuss] Interaction design can affect everyone

2009-07-07 Thread David Rondeau
As an example of the far-reaching impact of interaction design, I recently
wrote about the Boston MBTA subway system and the Charlie kiosks that are used
to purchase fares. Every day, hundreds of thousands of people ride the Boston
subway and many of them are confused and frustrated by the interaction design
of the kiosk.
http://incontextdesign.com/blog/interaction-design-and-the-boston-subway/

In the process of trying to understand the root of the problem, it raised some
additional interesting questions for me:

What are some other good examples of interaction design that affect multitudes
of people-and those people are forced to use it? They didn't choose to buy a
computer, their job doesn't require them to use one, and maybe they weren't
even expecting to use one.

What are the potential impacts of good or bad interaction design in these
situations? How many people could be affected? How severe could the impact be?
How does it change people's perceptions of the overall service being provided?
If it's a public service, like the subway, how does it affect our perception of
government?

Can we do more to prevent poor interaction designs in the first place? How do
we help designers create a solid core or foundation to start with? Are we doing
enough?

As interaction designers, are we being held responsible for the affects of our
designs? Should we be more accountable?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Where is the "Sign In" on Amazon.com?

2009-07-07 Thread Stephen Dondershine
I am a long time User of Amazon and have never gotten used to the
foibles of trying to sign in, especially considering that the site
itself prominently uses the term "sign-in" when you are *not*
signed in, therefore creating the expectation that there will be a
"sign in" link or button *somewhere.* I think Walmart is a faulty
analogy: Amazon is more like Costco or any other "shopping club" as
there are quite a few functional perks only available to members (wish
list, shopping list, amazon prime, recs. etc.) I think that anyone
that uses Amazon more than a few times or does more than casual
browsing will register and have at least a list or two. It's hard
for me to imagine that Amazon would invest so heavily in all that
"membercentric" functionality if many of their customers weren't
using it, or if they were 1 time buyers who never come back or insist
on remaining anonymous. Let's also not forget that some people
regularly clear their cookie cash as part of system maintenance, so
they may need to sign in fairly frequently rather than having it be a
very rare occurrence.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] changing standards for multi touch, multi user interfaces?

2009-07-07 Thread Bruce Wyman

i'm currently in a master's program in interactive media at london
college of communications. for my dissertation, i'm discussing the
implications multi touch, multi user interfaces would have on current
information architecture standards.

We designed and built a multi-touch experience for an art museuem
exhibition about a year and a half ago. There's a video of the UI
available via youtube at .

While the more overt part of the user experience was simply to give
visitors a way to look more closely at works of art (where they touch
yields about a 4x magnification of the painting), the secondary goal
of the experience was to give a way for multiple visitors to have the
same experience at the same time and interact with one another.
Usually in museums any time there's a group activity it's usually
carefully planned and somewhat directed. We wanted an experience
where the very design of the experience encouraged multiple users to
interact without being aware that it was an unusual application of
technology (when we started developing two years ago there were no
standard libraries and few reference examples of multi-touch in
action).

When we first prototyped the tables with a group of people, we were
encouraged when about 8 people all approached the table and began
simultaneously interacting with it without realizing that was
anything unusual.

So, aside from the physical design and reasons for the tables, we
designed the user experience in a very simple way. It would never
have dialogue boxes or interactions that brought a single user into
focus - where we could, always opt for an amodal solution. Second, we
made sure that the parts of the experience that supported the exhibit
-- looking at artwork closely -- didn't require the user to
immediately interact at the full capabilities of what was possible.
ie, if they simply touch the surface, they get some reward that
supports the premise. Anything after that -- touch and dragging or
better yet multi-touch and dragging, were all bonus rounds of
interaction. Nice, but not required. We also deliberately chose not
to rely on new interaction patterns that are possible with multitouch
(such as grabbing the corners of an object and dragging apart to
expand) since we made the assumption that for most visitors that was
still new.

We didn't design a complex experience, but all indications were that
it worked well. The tables were very popular in the exhibition not as
a technology (although there was a percentage of people that
recognized them for being something unusual) but rather as a good
experience. In visitor testing of the exhibit, we found people
spending a long time at the tables, going to look at artworks, and
then coming back to explore more.

All in all, we were pleased with the results and I think it succeeded
very deliberately because of the design choices we made in the user
experience.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] changing standards for multi touch, multi user interfaces?

2009-07-07 Thread lynnmarentette
I forgot to mention that universal design for learning and universal
usability principles should be considered when designing for
multi-touch and multi-user environments.

There needs to be flexibility and allowances for customization within
the program, and also a good understanding of the situations in which
the application will be used.

You have to account for occlusion, the angles that people use when
they point or manipulate the interface with their fingers and hands,
what sort of feedback they might expect, and so forth.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Where is the "Sign In" on Amazon.com?

2009-07-07 Thread Anthony Zeoli
Interesting, but I completely disagree. By removing anything that remotely
signals the user to "sign in" is to assume that all users will live with and
grasp the fact that "sign in" is not called "sign in."

Here's my issue. Fine to give the perception I am Amazon.com and I welcome
you without asking you for your credentials. Not fine, in that Amazon
heavily promotes their recommendation engine, but you must be signed in to
get an accurate view of those recommendations or to see what you previously
purchased.

Because I don't shop at Amazon and the site is intensely text heavy, I keep
missing the Welcome to Amazon.com "your name should go here but it doesn't
because it doesn't know your name yet" feature, which says next to it, "if
you're not, click here." If you're not what? If you're not you? If you're
not who? Then, if you actually do click through, the next page has a "Sign
In" graphic.

Why not say "Sign In, if you're not," right? I thought in interaction
design, we're not supposed to be about assumptions? We're supposed to make
it clear to the user this is where you sign in.

Just those two words alone save someone a world of headache when trying to
figure out how to sign in.

Amazon is not Wall-Mart, in the sense that it's not a physical store. When
you walk into Wal-Mart, the cash registers are at the front of the store for
a reason. They aren't just there to take your money when you leave, but to
indicate to you on arrival that you may have to go through them at a later
point in time, should you need to.

If you want to talk supermarkets, I love the Whole Foods register area,
where you stand in a line and the system shows you on the screen above which
register is open for you at that very moment, so you don't have to scan 40
yellow lights to see which on is off at that very moment.

Does Whole Foods need to display this information? No, they don't. Other
supermarkets don't, but they live in the past. Clear, concise information
that leads you to where you either want to go or didn't realize you needed
to go, but now have information to make that choice, better serves the
customer.

When I forget how to log in to Amazon, I get frustrated. I should not get
frustrated by this process. There should be no resistance at that point of
egress.

Perfect example.

I agree...a good example of how useful it can be to think about
interaction design from a f2f standpoint. What would an ideal
interaction like this happen if it were to happen in f2f...?

Then, how can you design/write copy to reflect that ideal interaction?

2009-07-07 Thread Anne Hjortshoj
I think also that, as UI designers, we're over-aware of patterns like
"signing in" to see certain things upon arriving at a given site
(because we've all worked on this kind of site so often, and executed
this pattern).

This discussion seems to indicate that our own baked-in experiences
can lead us to avoid innovating.

Sometimes our training can lead us to think in ways that users don't.
Something to watch out for, I think.

[IxDA Discuss] changing standards for multi touch, multi user interfaces?

2009-07-07 Thread Michelle Lau
i'm currently in a master's program in interactive media at london
college of communications. for my dissertation, i'm discussing the
implications multi touch, multi user interfaces would have on current
information architecture standards. for example, navigation for a
multi touch, multi user interface needs to be somewhat universal or
symmetric, something that is not taken into account by current IA
standards.

in your work experience has anyone seen other considerations for
multi touch interfaces that are not taken into account by current
standards?

thank you for your help! best wishes in your many projects and
endeavors.

[IxDA Discuss] Web Semiotics - Signs of the parameters of Web

2009-07-07 Thread mediametrics
Semiotics as defined in wikipedia

"Semiotics, also called semiotic studies or semiology, is the study
of sign processes (semiosis), or signification and communication,
signs and symbols, both individually and grouped into sign systems.
It includes the study of how meaning is constructed and
understood."

I always wondered how much is it relevant to the webspace. Many a
times there is a very strong mismatch between the brands portrayal
and the web interface. This i feel has a strong point that
communicates with the user perception. Many a times i felt that this
factor is completely ignored while the creative briefs and the
brainstorming meetings are being done.

I want to start discussion about how at all we can track this
intrinsic effect on the user experience with respect to the Semiotics
of Web. Please share your ideas and also experiences in past that
would be matching with views as supplementary or contrary..

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Bike-sharing design

2009-07-07 Thread Maria Gabriela Garcia
Hi Pietro,

I would use a credit card two times, first when you get the bike in
station A, and second when you return the bike in station B or the
same one. By this way you could have metrics about how users move in
the city with shared bikes, and time metrics. Also, you are forced to
use your credit card again when you return it, if you don´t used your
credit card the second time you would be charged for the cost of the
bike...a way to prevent from steeling.
I lived in Amsterdam in the 80´s and I know there was a lot ot stolen
bikes.
Cari saluti!

The City Bikes of Copenhagen have been around for quite a few years,
and are very heavily used by locals and tourists. They use airless
tires, so there is no chance of a flat. Here is an example of a
company that makes those - www.airfreetires.com

That would solve one of your problems.

Himanshu,

You've come to the right place!

I highly suggest starting with Whitney Hess's recent article on the
subject:

Also, find a mentor in your area, they're worth their weight in
gold. Check this site for their mentorship page.

Feel free to email me, or anyone else in the industry for advice.
We're all pretty friendly!

[IxDA Discuss] Bike-sharing design

2009-07-07 Thread Pietro Desiato
I have been trying bike-sharing service in Rome and I think it is
quite a good idea. There are some weak points in the process though
and I'd like to ask if you guys know how other contexts solved them.

Some details about the service in Rome (www.roma-n-bike.com):

1. You get a refillable card linked to an online account
2. Some places in the center have stations wre you can get a bike.
You have to use your card to get one.
3. Costs: 0,5 euro cent per half an hour

These are the issues I have encountered:

- I took a bike with a flat tire

- Out-of-order stations would not allow me to leave the bike and I
had to pay in the meanwhile

- Some offices had ran out of subscription cards...

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Where is the "Sign In" on Amazon.com?

I don't buy the idea that users don't look for sign-in. I'd be more

anyone who has used the web for any length of time is familiar with.
Whether or not it conceptually makes sense to sign in first, I think
users
become trained to do things a certain way without thinking about it,
and
removing that functionality seems off-base. I am not arguing that
sign-in
shouldn't be seamlessly integrated into checkout as well, I just
think that

it doesn't make sense to remove it as a separate function.

I completely buy it. I've never looked for a sign in option at Amazon

We talk about (gripe about) software coders who create UIs that serve
their programmatic model rather than the user? Well, you're doing the
same thing here: "I know that a user is going to have to sign in to
complete the transaction, so I want to know where that control is and
how it operates and how to sign out."

But what Amazon arguably wants to be is a Wal*Mart (god forgive me for
saying so!). At such a store, by walking in the door, you are
assumed to be a customer, someone who is going to buy something, even
if that's just a candy bar. They don't have a guard at the door
saying "What's your name? Show me your credit card!", but instead
they have someone saying "Welcome to the store! Enjoy shopping!"

By assuming that if you're there, you're going to buy something -- and
if not this time, the next one -- they take that "Show me your ID"
gruffness out of the equation, saving it for the time when it is
actually needed, at the purchase transaction. And in doing so, they
remove/reduce the opportunities for users to get fed up with the
questioning and just leave.

And in contrast, today I did my monthly visit to the Science Fiction
Book Club website to say "Nope, don't what this month's offered books,
don't send them." This site *doesn't* remember that I've been there
before. So I have to go to the upper right corner to sign in -- to a
link usually partially off-screen because they assume I'll have a non-
portrait shaped browser window (but I do), rather than a username/
password control. And that takes me to a page where I have to choose
either to Sign In or create a new account -- again, not to a username/
password control. And that takes me to a username/password control...
which have my saved credentials already filled in. Talk about wanting
the returning customer to feel like they are annoying you! (Actually,
I fib slightly. That's the flow from a couple months ago. they've at
least merged the 2nd and 3rd screens, which reduces the annoyance by a
factor of 2, but they still don't put it on the front page or sign me
in automatically, still making it 4 times as annoying as Amazon's
method.)
